Marion Sheppard felt sorry for herself when she began to lose her sight in her 40s. Since childhood, Sheppard had always been a keen dancer. But now she rarely left her Bronx apartment. She was afraid that, unable to see a stranger approaching, she would be knocked down on the streets. In fact, mostly, she worried about the way she would appear to the world. She wondered constantly, “What if people look at me differently, and treat me differently?”
After several months of grief and fear, Sheppard resolved to keep moving. Hard as it was, Sheppard forced herself to go out. She attended a social event for people with visual problems, and was shocked to find that not only did no one dance, but they barely moved. “Oh no!” she told herself. “That is not the way I want to live!” She bought a walking stick and named it Tyreek, which she had always planned on giving a son if she had one. Sheppard continued to work at her library job at The New York Times until her vision worsened in her 50s. And she kept moving and dancing. Sheppard was 61 when she attended a summer camp for the blind in 2008, where she taught her first line dancing class.
After that, she asked a Manhattan community center run by Visions if she could teach her class there, but she was told no and that it would be too dangerous for the students. Still, she persisted, and soon convinced the administrators to let her teach line dancing on a volunteer basis. Her classes proved to be so popular that in 2012, Visions hired her to be on staff. Sheppard was excited.
She was teaching over a dozen students dance steps. But Sheppard instructed her beloved students on far more than that. With constant encouragement, she also managed to make dignity and independence take root in them. In her classes, the students could truly be themselves.
4. Why was Sheppard unwilling to leave her apartment?
A. She had a lot of housework to do.
B. She had to attend her son at home.
C. She was afraid of being looked down upon.
D. She was worried about getting involved in accidents.
5. How did Sheppard feel about her walking stick?
A. She was often greatly embarrassed by it.
B. She regarded it as a temporary necessity.
C. She treated it simply as an ordinary tool.
D. She valued it as something special.
6. Why did the community center refuse Sheppard’s request at first?
A. They didn’t have enough space for dance classes.
B. They were concerned about the students’ safety.
C. They didn’t believe Sheppard could teach well.
D. They thought dancing wasn’t suitable for blind people.
7. What did Sheppard’s students learn from her?
A. Humor and patience. B. Intelligence and honesty.
C. Imagination and creativity. D. Self-respect and self-reliance.
C 5. D 6. B 7. D
根据第一段中“She was afraid that, unable to see a stranger approaching, she would be knocked down on the streets. In fact, mostly, she worried about the way she would appear to the world. She wondered constantly, “What if people look at me differently, and treat me differently?” (她担心自己看不见陌生人走近,会在街上被撞倒。事实上,大多数时候,她更担心自己在世人眼中的样子。她总是在想:“如果人们用不同的眼光看我,用不同的方式对待我,该怎么办呢?”)”可知,Sheppard不愿离开公寓,主要是因为担心别人用异样的眼光看待她、区别对待她,即害怕被轻视。故选C项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“She bought a walking stick and named it Tyreek, which she had always planned on giving a son if she had one. (她买了一根拐杖,给它取名叫Tyreek,这是她一直打算如果自己有儿子的话,给儿子取的名字。)”可知,Sheppard给拐杖起了一个原本计划给儿子的名字,这体现出她将拐杖视为特殊的存在,而非普通工具。故选D项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“After that, she asked a Manhattan community center run by Visions if she could teach her class there, but she was told no and that it would be too dangerous for the students. (之后,她询问了由Visions运营的曼哈顿社区中心是否可以在那里教课,但她被告知不行,因为对学生来说太危险了。)”可知,社区中心最初拒绝Sheppard的请求是因为他们担心学生的安全。故选B项。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“But Sheppard instructed her beloved students on far more than that. With constant encouragement, she also managed to make dignity and independence take root in them. In her classes, the students could truly be themselves. (但Sheppard教给她的学生们的远不止这些。通过不断的鼓励,她还让尊严和独立在学生们心中扎根。在她的课堂上,学生们可以真正做自己。)”可知,Sheppard的学生从她那里学到了自尊和自立。故选D项。

If the crust(外壳)of the earth were not pretty solid(坚固的), it would be shaking and moving up and down frequently. However, there are places in the rocks of the earth’s crust where it isn’t strongly held together—where faults exist. Along the faults, one rock might push against another with great force. The energy is changed to vibration in the rocks, so they begin to shake and we have an earthquake!
The most famous one in North America was the Sin Francisco earthquake of 1906. Seven hundred people died and property(财产)damage amounted to about $425,000,000. The greatest destruction came from the fires that followed the quake.
One of the most famous earthquakes in Europe took place in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1755. The city was destroyed and at least thirty thousand people were killed. In 1908, in Calabria and Sicily, a quake killed about seventy-five thousand people. In 1915, in central Italy, hundreds of towns and villages were damaged and thirty thousand people were killed.
Two great earthquakes that caused great damage in Asia took place in Tokyo, Japan, and in Gansu Province in China. The Tokyo quake of 1923 killed more than one hundred thousand people and destroyed the city and the city of Yokohama, too. The Chinese quake in 1920 covered more than three hundred square miles and killed about two hundred thousand people.
8. The first paragraph mainly tells us_____________.
A. where earthquakes happen B. the damage caused by earthquakes
C. how earthquakes happen D. famous earthquakes in the world
9. The underlined word “vibration” in the first paragraph probably means “_________”.
A. force B. shaking C. energy. D. losing
10. Which of the following is the correct order of the years when the earthquakes happened?
①the San Francisco earthquake
②the earthquake in Lisbon, Portugal
③the earthquake in Calabria and Sicily
④the earthquake in central Italy
⑤the earthquake in Gansu Province
⑥the Tokyo quake
A. ③④⑤⑥②① B. ⑤⑥②①③④ C. ①③④②⑤⑥ D. ②①③④⑤⑥
11. We can infer from the passage that___________.
A. the fires following the San Francisco earthquake caused more damage than the earthquake did
B. the earth’s crust in Europe is weaker than that in other places
C. there were 75,000 people killed in the San Francisco earthquake
D. the city of Yokohama was not greatly influenced by the Tokyo quake
C 9. B 10. D 11. A

根据第一段“so they begin to shake and we have an earthquake!”(所以它们开始震动,我们有了地震!)
根据第二段“The most famous one in North America was the Sin Francisco earthquake of 1906.”(北美最著名的地震是1906年的旧金山地震。),第三段“One of the most famous earthquakes in Europe took place in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1755.”(1755年,欧洲最著名的地震之一发生在葡萄牙的里斯本。),“In 1908, in Calabria and Sicily, a quake killed about seventy-five thousand people. In 1915, in central Italy, hundreds of towns and villages were damaged and thirty thousand people were killed.”(1908年,在卡拉布里亚和西西里岛,一场地震造成约7.5万人死亡。 ,第四段“The Tokyo quake of 1923 killed more than one hundred thousand people and destroyed the city and the city of Yokohama, too. The Chinese quake in 1920 covered more than three hundred square miles and killed about two hundred thousand people.”(1923年的东京地震造成10多万人死亡,并摧毁了这座城市和横滨市。

D
At the foot of an Icelandic volcano, a newly-opened plant is taking CO₂ from the air and turning it to rock. This technology is known as “direct air capture(捕捉)” or DAC. It’s a bit like “mining” the sky for CO₂—simple in principle, but very difficult to carry out.
To do this, you need the right geography conditions. That is why Climeworks, a Swiss company, built the Orca plant in Iceland. There, fans draw air into big black containers where the filter(过滤器) catches CO₂. Once the filter is full, it is heated to around 100℃ to separate CO₂ with sufficient energy from volcanic activity. Next, the collected CO₂ is combined with water and pumped deep underground into rock formations. Within a few years, the CO₂ will turn into stone.
However, exciting and promising as this technology is, it won’t save us from climate change on its own. While Orca, the largest plant of its kind in the world, can capture up to 4,000 tons of CO₂ per year, the yearly global emissions(排放) are around 33.4 billion tons of CO₂, so the plant can deal with 0.00001% of our yearly emissions. Besides, the process is expensive and requires large amounts of energy.
Daniel Egger, the chief commercial officer at Climeworks, said that while his company is at an “industrial level”, it is not where it needs to be to make a difference in fighting climate change. But we have to learn to walk before we can run.
Carbon storage(碳储存) is just arising as a technology. It won’t help us fix climate change yet, but it can be important down the line, if we have the right conditions for it.
12. What can we learn about DAC according to the text?
A. It is the best way to fix climate change at present.
B. It requires enough heat and energy to operate.
C It is highly developed in removing CO₂.
D. It can be applied anywhere in the world.
13. Why are some data used in paragraph 3?
A. To indicate the bright future of the technology.
B. To provide the research results for the readers.
C. To show the challenges DAC faces at present.
D. To call for more plants like Orca to be set up.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the technology?
A. Unclear.
B. Uninterested.
C. Doubtful.
D. Hopeful.
15. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A science report.
B. A company leaflet.
C. A chemistry textbook.
D. A social web page.
B 13. C 14. D 15. A
根据文章第二段内容“There, fans draw air into big black containers where the filter catches CO₂. Once the filter is full, it is heated to around 100℃ to separate CO₂ with sufficient energy from volcanic activity.(在那里,风扇将空气吸入黑色大容器,过滤器在那里捕捉CO₂。一旦过滤器充满,它就会被加热到100℃左右,以足够的能量从火山活动中分离出CO₂。)”以及文章第三段内容“Besides, the process is expensive and requires large amounts of energy.( 此外,这个过程是昂贵的,需要大量的能源。)”
根据文章第三段内容“While Orca, the largest plant of its kind in the world, can capture up to 4000 tons of CO₂ per year, the yearly global emissions are around 33.4 billion tons of CO₂, so the plant can deal with 0.00001% of our yearly emissions. (世界上最大的工厂——Orca每年最多能捕获4000吨的CO₂,但全球每年的CO₂排放量约为334亿吨,因此该工厂只能处理我们每年排放的0.00001%。)”列举的数字可知,全球每年的CO₂排放量约为334亿吨,该工厂只能处理每年排放的0.00001%,能帮助处理的微乎其微,成本高,耗源大,由此可推知,这些数字表明了DAC目前面临的挑战。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章末尾段内容“Carbon storage is just arising as a technology. It won't help us fix climate change yet, but it can be important down the line, if we have the right conditions for it.(碳储存技术刚刚兴起。它还不能帮助我们解决气候变化问题,但如果我们有合适的条件,它在未来可能很重要。)”可知,在作者看来,虽然碳存储技术刚刚兴起,还不能帮助解决气候问题,但是在将来合适条件下,碳存储技术还是很重要的,由此可推知,对于该技术,作者是抱有希望的。故选D项。
15题详解】
推理判断题。通过阅读文章内容,可知文章首段内容“At the foot of an Icelandic volcano, a newly-opened plant is taking CO₂ from the air and turning it to rock. This technology is known as ‘direct air capture’ or DAC.(在冰岛的一座火山脚下,一家新开业的工厂正在从空气中提取CO₂,并将其变成岩石。这种技术被称为“直接空气捕获(DAC)”。)”揭示了文章的中心话题,即,文章主要围绕一项新技术“直接空气捕获(DAC)”为话题,讲述了该技术的原理,面临的挑战,以及前景。由此可推知,文章应是摘自科学新闻报道。故选A项。

On my last first day of elementary school, I felt my heart beating fast as I stepped into the classroom. My fourth-grade report wasn’t good, and “Needs Improvement” comments made me nervous and uneasy all the time. Although I worked very hard, I failed the final exam. Almost every time the teacher asked me to answer a question, my voice shook. But the moment Mr. Harrison —or “Mr. H”, as he insisted we call him — greeted us with a smile, my nerves disappeared gradually. “Welcome to the fifth grade! Take any seat you like,” he said with a warm voice. Young and energetic, he had a way of making even the shyest students feel at ease. I chose a desk near the front due to my nearsightedness, grateful for his approachable behaviour.
Mr. H was an encouraging class and math teacher and he made learning exciting with his fun ideas and positive attitude. It did not matter whether you were the best or worst student in the class. What he did made you feel you were special. I remember the day when Mr. H announced, “Everyone, we have new students joining the class.” He was holding a cage with three tiny gerbils (沙鼠). Everyone shouted with joy. “They’re part of our family now,” he declared, and indeed, under his guidance, the classroom felt like one. Smiley faces were his trademark. He always put a smiley face on the chalkboard, homework and test papers.
When I failed my first math quiz, he drew a smiley face beside my score and wrote, “Let’s figure this out together.” After class, he pulled me aside, “You’re smarter than you think,” he said. His words carried a quiet certainty that made me sit up straight. They weren’t empty praise—they were an invitation to see myself differently. “But we need to find a way that works for you,” he continued. And he meant it.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
He stayed late twice a week to help me with my math.

By the end of the term, something unexpected happened.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
He stayed late twice a week to help me with my math. Every Tuesday and Thursday after school, our empty classroom became a laboratory of learning where mistakes weren’t failures, but clues to solving the puzzles. He broke down maths problems into stories. His creative teaching way and encouraging words made me realize I wasn’t bad at school and that I just needed a guiding way. Slowly, my Ds became Cs, and then Bs. But more than grades, the way he celebrated tiny victories — smiley faces on my homework — gave me confidence.
By the end of the term, something unexpected happened. I raised my hand in class without hesitation for the first time. When Mr. H asked me to answer a question, my voice didn’t shake. During a terrifying test, I got an A+. I realized I’d stopped checking for “Needs Improvement” comments — not because they’d disappeared, but because I finally saw my own potential under the guidance of Mr. H. I was so grateful to Mr. H, whose cheerful, positive and smiley faces could really make a difference in other people’s lives.

②the earthquake in Lisbon, Portugal
③the earthquake in Calabria and Sicily
④the earthquake in central Italy
⑤the earthquake in Gansu Province
⑥the Tokyo quake
A. ③④⑤⑥②① B. ⑤⑥②①③④ C. ①③④②⑤⑥ D. ②①③④⑤⑥
11. We can infer from the passage that___________.
A. the fires following the San Francisco earthquake caused more damage than the earthquake did
B. the earth’s crust in Europe is weaker than that in other places
C. there were 75000 people killed in the San Francisco earthquake
D. the city of Yokohama was not greatly influenced by the Tokyo quake

C. It is highly developed in removing CO₂.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
He stayed late twice a week to help me with my math.
