I often teach about happiness and what has become clear is this: There are some qualities always unhappy people have. Here are some of them.
Happy people know life can be hard and tend to live through hard times. They take responsibility for how they got themselves into a mess, and focus on getting themselves out of it as soon as possible. Unhappy people see themselves as victims of life and stay stuck in the“look what happened to me” attitude instead of finding a way through and out to the other side.
Most happy people believe in the good in people instead of thinking everyone is out to get them. Generally open and friendly towards people they meet, happy people foster (培养) a sense of community around themselves and meet new people with all open heart. Unhappy people are distrustful of most people they meet and don’t think strangers can be trusted. Unfortunately, this behavior slowly closes all chances of meeting new friends.
Unhappy people believe someone else’s good fortune steals from their own. They believe there’s not enough goodness to go around and always compare others’against theirs. This leads to jealousy (嫉妒). Happy people know that others’good luck and circumstance are just signs of what they also can achieve if they try hard enough. They believe in unlimited possibilities and don’t get stuck in thinking one person’s good fortune limits their possible outcome in life.
There’s only so much space between the two ears. Unhappy people fill that space with constant worry and fear. Happy people experience fear and worry too, but make an important difference between feeling it and living with it. When fear or worry crosses a happy person’s mind, they’ll ask themselves if there’s an action they can take to prevent their fear or worry from happening and they take it. If not, they realize they’re spinning in fear and they lay it down.
4. Paragraph 2 mainly shows that unhappy people tend to _______________.
A. focus on what they really want
B. get worried about what will happen
C. stay focused on the past misfortunes
D. find a way to live through hard times
5. According to paragraph 3 and 4, unhappy people ______________.
A. like making some new friends
B. hate seeing others with good fortune
C. are more likely to be cheated by strangers
D. believe they can get good luck by working hard
6. What is implied about happy people?
A. They don’t think life is hard.
B. They hardly ever fear anything.
C. They try to get out of their fear or worries.
D. They don’t believe in every people they meet.
7. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By making comparisons.
B. By giving examples.
C. By showing detailed data.
D By proving some theories.
C 5. B 6. C 7. A

Do you know the Paradox (悖论) of Choice? Let me explain it to you with a fruity example. If I was to generously offer you an apple from my glorious basket of fruit, and present you with two different choices, chances are that you’d quickly make a choice. You’d then likely walk away, feeling happy and content with your choice.
So far so good. However, what might happen if I was to do the same, but get you to choose from a bigger basket of different varieties? Chances are that you might take longer to make a choice — struggling to weigh up the benefits of each. After thinking for a while, you might experience brain fog and frustration and decide you don’t want an apple after all. Or, you might choose one and walk off with it, only to wonder if you made the correct choice. And, if by chance you actually chose the very same apple as you did in our first example, the chances are that it wouldn’t taste quite as good.
You can understand the reason for this when you read about the theory of loss aversion. Put simply, studies have found that a loss has more than twice the psychological impact of an equivalent (同等的) gain. It’s more preferable to avoid losing £5 than to gain £5. Such is the pain of regret in losing out through making a ‘poor choice’.
The Paradox of Choice is common in modern society. We live in a world of endless choice. Never have human beings been surrounded by such plentiful supply and convenience. Thus, we’ve been suffering a great deal. However, one idea that I’ve found helpful is to get into a habit of setting a time limit on making choices and feeling happy with that. To adopt this idea requires us to become happy with finding something that’s good enough, without necessarily being the best. We could recognise that our time is more important than the need to get an extra 10% on top of what is already good enough.
8. What probably happened when you chose an apple from the bigger basket?
A. You made a quick choice. B. You made a wrong choice.
C You were happy with your choice. D. You were dissatisfied with your choice.
9. What does the underlined word “aversion” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Dislike B. Recovery. C. Adjustment. D. Control.
10. Which of the following best describes the Paradox of Choice?
A. More is less. B. The more, the merrier. C. Better safe than sorry. D. Don’t cry over spilt milk.
11. What does the author suggest readers do?
A. Make informed choices. B. Stay positive and happy.
C. Settle for good enough choices. D. Consider time as the most important.
D 9. A 10. A 11. C

根据第二段“After thinking for a while, you might experience brain fog and frustration and decide you don’t want an apple after all. Or, you might choose one and walk off with it, only to wonder if you made the correct choice. And, if by chance you actually chose the very same apple as you did in our first example, the chances are that it wouldn’t taste quite as good. (思考一会儿后,你可能会感到头脑混乱和沮丧,最终决定你根本不想要苹果了。或者,你可能会选一个然后拿走,却怀疑自己是否做出了正确的选择。而且,如果你碰巧选择了和第一个例子中一样的苹果,很有可能它尝起来不会那么好)”可知,从大篮子里选苹果时,你可能会不满意自己的选择。故选D。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“You can understand the reason for this when you read about the theory of loss aversion. Put simply, studies have found that a loss has more than twice the psychological impact of an equivalent (同等的) gain. It’s more preferable to avoid losing £5 than to gain £5. Such is the pain of regret in losing out through making a ‘poor choice’. (当你阅读损失aversion理论时,你就能理解其中的原因。简单地说,研究发现,损失带来的心理影响是同等收益的两倍多。避免损失5英镑比获得5英镑更可取。这就是因做出“糟糕选择”而错失机会所带来的后悔之痛)”可知,人们更倾向于避免损失,由此可推测出人们不喜欢损失,划线单词aversion的意思是“不喜欢”,与Dislike意义相近。故选A。
根据第二段“However, what might happen if I was to do the same, but get you to choose from a bigger basket of different varieties? Chances are that you might take longer to make a choice — struggling to weigh up the benefits of each. After thinking for a while, you might experience brain fog and frustration and decide you don’t want an apple after all. Or, you might choose one and walk off with it, only to wonder if you made the correct choice. And, if by chance you actually chose the very same apple as you did in our first example, the chances are that it wouldn’t taste quite as good.(然而,如果我也这样做,但让你从一篮子不同的品种中选择,会发生什么?你可能需要更长的时间来做出选择——努力权衡每种选择的好处。思考一会儿后,你可能会感到头脑混乱和沮丧,最终决定你根本不想要苹果了。或者,你可能会选一个然后拿走,却怀疑自己是否做出了正确的选择。而且,如果你碰巧选择了和第一个例子中一样的苹果,很有可能它尝起来不会那么好)”以及第四段“We live in a world of endless choice. Never have human beings been surrounded by such plentiful supply and convenience. Thus, we’ve been suffering a great deal. (我们生活在一个有无尽选择的世界里。人类从未被如此丰富的供应和便利所包围。因此,我们遭受了很多痛苦)”可知,由从两个苹果的选择到更多苹果的选择的例子来看,选择多了反而让人更纠结、更不满意,选择越多,带来的痛苦越多,也就是“多则少”。故选A。
根据第四段“However, one idea that I’ve found helpful is to get into a habit of setting a time limit on making choices and feeling happy with that. To adopt this idea requires us to become happy with finding something that’s good enough, without necessarily being the best. (然而,我发现一个有用的想法是养成设定选择时间限制并对此感到满意的习惯。采用这个想法要求我们对找到足够好的东西感到满意,而不一定是最好的)”可知,作者建议读者接受足够好的选择。故选C。

Among the annoying challenges facing the middle class is one that will probably go unmentioned in the next presidential campaign: What happens when the robots come for their jobs?
Don’t dismiss that possibility entirely. About half of U.S.jobs are at high risk of being automated, according to a University of Oxford study, with the middle class disproportionately (不成比例的) squeezed. Lower-income jobs like gardening or day care don’t appeal to robots. But many middle-class occupations — trucking, financial advice, software engineering — have aroused their interest, or soon will. The rich own the robots, so they will be fine.
This isn't to be alarmist Optimists point out that technological upheaval has benefited workers in the past. The Industrial Revolution didn’t go so well for Luddites (反对技术进步分子) whose jobs were displaced by mechanized looms (织布机), but it eventually raised living standards and created more jobs than it destroyed. Likewise, automation should eventually boost productivity, stimulate demand by driving down prices, and free workers from hard, boring work. But in the medium term, middle-class workers may need a lot of help adjusting.
The first step, as Erik Bryn and Andrew McAfee argue in The Second Machine Age, should be rethinking education and job training. Curriculums — from grammar school to college — should evolve to focus less on memorizing facts and more on creativity and complex communication. Vocational schools (职业学校) should do a better job of fostering problem-solving skills and helping students work alongside robots. Online education can supplement the traditional kind. It could make extra training and instruction affordable. Professionals trying to acquire new skills will be able to do so without going into debt.
The challenge of coping with automation underlines the need for the U.S. to revive its fading business dynamism: Starting new companies must be made easier. In previous eras of drastic technological change, entrepreneurs smoothed the transition by dreaming up ways to combine labor and machines. The best uses of 3D printers and virtual reality haven’t been invented yet. The U.S. needs the new companies that will invent them.
Finally, because automation threatens to widen the gap between capital income and labor income, taxes and the safety net will have to be rethought. Taxes on low-wage labor need to be cut, and wage subsidies such as the earned income tax credit should be expanded: This would boost incomes, encourage work, reward companies for job creation, and reduce inequality.
Technology will improve society in ways big and small over the next few years, yet this will be little comfort to those who find their lives and careers upended by automation. Destroying the machines that are coming for our jobs would be nuts. But policies to help workers adapt will be indispensable.
12. Who will be most threatened by automation?
A. Leading politicians. B. Low-wage laborers.
C. Robot owners. D. Middle-class workers.
13. What is the author’s attitude towards the future?
A. Optimistic. B. Pessimistic.
C. Indifferent. D. Objective.
14. Education in the age of automation should put more efforts on________.
A. creative potential B. job-hunting skills
C. individual needs D. cooperative spirit
15. Where can you most possibly see this passage?
A. Teens. B. Future.
C. The sound of workers. D. The revolution of science.
【答案】12 D 13. D 14. A 15. B

根据第四段中的“Curriculums — from grammar school to college — should evolve to focus less on memorizing facts and more on creativity and complex communication. (课程——从语法学校到大学——应该逐渐减少对事实的记忆,更多地关注创造力和复杂的交流)”可知,在自动化的时代,教育应致力于创造潜能。故选A项。

Parents are the number one influence in their children’s lives. ____16____ In a Parents Empowered survey, parents placed themselves last in the line-up of influences on their children — after friends, teachers and media. ____17____ Research shows that there are three things parents can do to protect children from risky behaviors: bonding (联结), boundaries (边界), and monitoring.
The stronger the relationship between parents and their children, the more the child will not want to disappoint the parent. Eating dinner together as a family has a significant impact on protecting children from risky behavior. ____18____ Listening to children without preaching (说教) strengthens the bond.
Boundaries are set when parents set clear family rules on behaviors such as no alcohol or other drugs. Only a small percentage of teens will try these if parents make it very clear and talk about consequences (后果) for breaking the family rule.
A much needed parental task, that tends to drop as the children become teens, is monitoring. A recent study shows the best kind of parenting to protect youth is “warm and with follow through”. ____19____ When they are going out, ask the questions: Where are you going? Who are you going with? What will you be doing? When will you be home? Will there be alcohol or other drugs there?
____20____ So it is helpful for kids who have a hard time saying “no” to their friends to be able to use their parents as the fall guys.
A. Check on their social media.
B. Parents don’t always believe this.
C. In other words, trust but check on your kids.
D. Have consequences when the rules are broken.
E. That’s because there is family togetherness and discussion.
F. There are plenty of dangerous activities kids can get into these days.

Unhappy people believe someone else’s good fortune steals from their own They believe there’s not enough goodness to go around and always compare others’against theirs.
B get worried about what will happen
C. stay focused on the past misfortunes
D. find a way to live through hard times
5. According to paragraph 3 and 4, unhappy people ______________.
A. like making some new friends
B. hate seeing others with good fortune
C are more likely to be cheated by strangers
D. believe they can get good luck by working hard
D. By proving some theories.
C
8 What probably happened when you chose an apple from the bigger basket?
A. You made a quick choice. B. You made a wrong choice.
C. You were happy with your choice.
D

C. In other words, trust but check on your kids.
