Years ago, Marie Massa noticed a piece of abandoned land near her son’s school. The land was full of weeds (杂草) and trash, and it looked hopeless. But Massa saw some native flowers still growing there. This gave her an idea: to create a garden.
Today, the land is filled with native plants. Massa spends three mornings a week weeding and watering to keep the garden healthy. Her small project has become a community garden. It now provides a home for bees, butterflies, and birds. Local people often stop by to admire the garden, and some even volunteer to help with watering or planting.
At first, the area was covered with weeds and old electrical equipment. Massa decided to clear the trash and bring in water to prepare the land. After the winter rains, the flower seeds she planted began to sprout, showing that the soil could support growth. Massa used donations and a small fund to plant many local plants. These plants help wildlife by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals.
The work was not easy. High summer temperatures killed half the plants, so she had to replant them. Massa often worked alone, although neighbors and her young son sometimes helped. She stressed that a garden needs long-term care: “The effort you put in now will show in the beauty and life you see tomorrow.”
Now, in its third spring, the garden is full of color and life. Massa hopes her project will encourage people to care for other empty spaces, yet she reminds them that real change doesn’t happen overnight. For her, this garden helps teach people about local plants and their value to wildlife and our future.
4. What inspired Marie Massa to turn the area into a garden?
A. Complaints from neighbors. B. Advice from her son’s schools.
C. No birds or butterflies in the area. D. Native flowers surviving on the land.
5. What challenge did Massa face while developing the garden?
A. Finding enough seeds to plant. B. Getting support from the neighbors.
C. Protecting the plants from high heat. D. Raising enough fund for the native plants.
6. What does Massa hope to achieve with her garden project?
A. To study more about gardening. B. To grow more food for the community.
C To ask experts for gardening help. D. To use empty spaces and make them green.

Visiting museums has become increasingly popular among many people. Adults usually look at artworks based on their prior knowledge and expectations, often following the explanations on labels. They might focus on the artist’s techniques, historical context, or the meaning behind a painting, Children, however, pay attention to different things, such as bright colors, unusual shapes, or exciting scenes. Although many museums provide special activities for children, in most exhibitions, children can only get information from labels written for adults, which can be difficult for them to understand or follow.
In a recent study, researchers used eye-tracking technology to explore how different types of labels influenced children’s viewing experiences. They studied children aged 10 to 12 and compared three types of descriptions: aimed at adults, playful storytelling labels for children, and no labels at all By recording where the children looked and how long they focused on each part, researchers produced color maps to show their patterns of attention. This method showed what the children noticed, and also how focused they were on the artworks.
The results were revealing. Children with child-focused labels paid more attention to the paintings. They looked closely at the interesting details in the descriptions, spent more time examining the artworks, and often asked museum staff for explanations. By contrast, children who read adult-focused labels behaved similarly to those who had no labels at all. They did not focus on any part of the painting and moved through the exhibition too fast to understand it well.
These findings suggest that museums need to reconsider how labels are designed for children. They also provide useful insights for art education in schools. Traditional lessons, such as reading from textbooks or listening to long speeches, often fail to fully engage students. Instead, storytelling that connects to children’s daily lives can help students develop a deeper understanding of art. Moreover, incorporating interactive activities, such as small group discussions or hands-on projects, could further encourage children to explore and appreciate art more actively.
7. What is the main problem for children in many museum exhibitions?
A. Too many simple labels are used. B. The exhibits are too crowded for children.
C. Labels are written mainly for adult visitors. D. Museums don’t have programs for children.
8. How did children with interesting, child-focused labels behave?
A. They explored the artworks more actively. B. They rushed through the paintings quickly.
C. They paid more attention to the labels’ humor. D. They mostly ignored the artworks’ key features.
9. How could schools improve art education according to the study?
A. Arrange more museum visits for students. B. Use storytelling connected to students’ lives.
C. Depend on traditional lectures and textbooks. D. Use new eye-tracking technology in classrooms.
10. Which is the best title for this passage?
A. The Importance of Storytelling in Art Education.
B. The Different Ways Adults and Children View Art.
C. The Study of Improving Children’s Art Experience.
D. The Use of Eye-Tracking Technology in Art Research.
C 8. A 9. B 10. C

根据第三段中“Children with child-focused labels paid more attention to the paintings. They looked closely at the interesting details in the descriptions, spent more time examining the artworks, and often asked museum staff for explanations. A. What is often ignored is the powerful role that our relationships with others play in achieving success.
B. This kind of support can greatly increase our chances of doing well, especially when we face difficulties or self-doubt.
C. Many people think that success comes only from personal ambition and hard work, but this is only part of the picture.
D. Therefore, building strong, positive connections with family, friends, or mentors is just as important as developing our own skills and talents.
E. For example, a student struggling with a difficult subject might find the courage to keep trying after a teacher’s encouraging words or a study partner’s help.
________ ________ ________ ________ ________
C ②. A ③. E ④. B ⑤. D
C. Many people think that success comes only from personal ambition and hard work, but this is only part of the picture.(许多人认为成功只来自个人抱负和努力工作,但这只是片面的) 可知,这是一个普遍存在的观点,适合作为全文的引子,开启话题讨论。A. What is often ignored is the powerful role that our relationships with others play in achieving success.(常被忽视的是,我们与他人的关系在取得成功的过程中所起的重要作用) 承接C句。 E. For example, a student struggling with a difficult subject might find the courage to keep trying after a teacher’s encouraging words or a study partner’s help.(例如,在老师的鼓励或学习伙伴的帮助下,学生可能会有勇气继续努力) 通过具体例子,来证明A句中“人际关系很重要”的观点。 B. This kind of support can greatly increase our chances of doing well, especially when we face difficulties or self-doubt.(这种支持可以大大增加我们做得好的机会,尤其是当我们面临困难或自我怀疑的时候)”中“这种支持”指代 E 句中老师的鼓励和同伴的帮助。 D. Therefore, building strong, positive connections with family, friends, or mentors is just as important as developing our own skills and talents.(因此,与家人、朋友或导师建立牢固、积极的联系,与发展我们自己的技能和才能同样重要) 中“因此” 是典型的结论性关联词,用于收尾。

33. showing
34. which 35. meaningful
36. attached
37. to raise

40. is described
41. enthusiasm
句子已有谓语动词“unveiled”,这里“show off”表示“展示”,与句子主语“The Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics”之间是主动关系,所以用现在分词作状语,故填showing。
故填to raise。
“people with disabilities”是固定表达,意为“残疾人”,“with”表示“具有,带有”。故填with。
故填is described。

Years ago Marie Massa noticed a piece of abandoned land near her son’s school.
C. To ask experts for gardening help. D. To use empty spaces and make them green.
C
