Farewell to Prefect Du
Wang Bo (Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
You’ll leave the town walled far and wide for mist-veiled land by riverside.
I feel on parting sad and drear, for both of us are strangers here.
If you have friends who know your heart, distance cannot keep you apart.
At crossroads where we bid adicu, do not shed tears as women do!
This is a farewell (告别) poem. Poet Wang Bo (650—676) wrote it to say goodbye to his friend who went to Sichuan Province to work.
The third line is so famous that people will say it when they say goodbye to each other.
Usually, it is sad to say goodbye to friends. But the poet was an optimist (乐观主义者) about saying goodbye. He believed that distance didn’t matter to friends as long as they kept each other in their thoughts.
It was not strange for Wang Bo to write such a poem. He was famous for his talent when he was a child. His poems showed not only his sadness, but his broad mind. His most famous work was Preface to Tengwangge Pavilion (《滕王阁序》). So he, Yang Jiong, Lu Zhaolin and Luo Binwang, were the four great poets of the early Tang Dynasty.

B. It was not firm enough because anything could break it.
C. It was so strong that even money couldn’t break it.
D. It seemed like a cup of tea.
59. Why was Wang Bo one of the four great poets of the early Tang Dynasty?
A. Because he was talented and wrote Preface to Tengwangge Pavilion.
B. Because he had a good relationship with other three poets.
C. Because he felt sad to say goodbye to friends and he had many friends.
D. Because he was an optimist about saying goodbye.
60. What is the writer’s attitude towards Wang Bo?

Once upon a time, there lived a farmer in a small house outside the village. One day while walking through a market, he saw many baskets and among them was a basket of dates (海枣). He wanted to eat them, but he had no money to buy them. He kept thinking of eating dates and couldn’t even sleep well at night.
The next morning, he got an idea. He went to the forest and started pickıng up dry wood, and before evening he collected a lot of dry wood and made a bundle of it. Carrying that bundle on his shoulder, he started walking to the market. The farmer was tired because of all the work he had done.
The farmer sold all the wood shortly after he got to the market. With all the money he got, he bought some dates and happily went back. On his way, he thought, “Today I had the wish to eat dates. Tomorrow some other wishes may come into my mind. If I give in today, then I will become a slave of my desire.”
As soon as this idea came, the farmer gave up the idea of eating the dates, which took him so much hard work. Finally, he gave all the dates to a poor man who was passing by at that time.

A bestseller, Willpower: Rediscovering Our Greatest Strength, suggests that willpower (意志力) is an ability to make decisions in people’s life.
Here is a famous experiment in the book The Marshmallow (棉花糖) Test Professor Walter Mischel tested the willpower of 600 four-year-olds to six-year-olds. In the experiment, each child was left alone in a room for fifteen minutes with a marshmallow on a table in front of them. They were given two choices—they could either eat it or, if they waited for fifteen minutes, they’d be given a second one (and then they could eat both).
So, what did the kids do? 70% ate the first marshmallow within the fifteen minutes. But the other 30% showed willpower—they controlled themselves and waited for the second marshmallow. Twenty years later, Mischel got in touch with the children, who, by then, were in their early twenties. And he found that those who’d shown strong willpower were getting better marks at university and were more popular.
Willpower is like a muscle (肌肉), and the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets. Be careful though just like any muscle, your “will power muscle” can get tired. If you have to do lots of things that require willpower, take a break or give yourself a treat. That way, you’ll build up your willpower again.

A. adults have stronger willpower than young kids
