As a conservation photographer, I spent a day with conservator of Tswalu’s wildlife conservation team Clement Motau to understand what it takes to habituate cheetahs. Habituating wildlife is an ongoing process — slowly getting wild animals used to the presence of vehicles and people. Animals like cheetahs receive regular visits from the wildlife conservation team. That way they learn that in this privately protected area, humans pose no threat to them. Clement spent his early childhood in Middelburg where he lived on a farm with families, and he would go to the rural area every chance he got, including most school holidays. “I enjoyed climbing mountains and being outdoors. I always knew I wanted to work with wild animals.” He decided to study nature conservation rather than become a tour guide because “dealing with people all the time is not my strongest point.” After three years of studies, he came to Tswalu in 2016 and was offered a position on the conservation team. Though one day rarely looks the same as another, with tasks ranging from catching wild dogs to mending fences, the chance to spend time with cheetahs is an experience he particularly enjoys. An hour after we first spotted Artemis, Clement’s favourite cheetah, she is still on the move, clearly looking for a meal. She is a beautiful animal, and I am in no hurry to leave. Clement, however, suggests that we do exactly that. Though she seems unbothered by our presence, we don’t want to negatively impact her chances of feeding. Wildlife tourism is an essential conservation tool, both to raise awareness and to pay for all the costs. But the well-being of the animals always comes first. “She is very obliging with us today,” he says. “So relaxed. The guides and our guests will love her. She’ll be a future star.” 1.What do we know about habituating wild animals? A.It’s a process to get wild animals used to humans. B.It’s done by paying random visits to wild animals. C.Wild animals will benefit from this practice. D.Such practice is limited to private reserves. 2.Why did Clement choose to become a nature conservator? A.He liked a job with various tasks. B.Being a tour guide was not his dream. C.He enjoyed spending time with wild animals. D.Working with animals was his strongest point. 3.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Artemis is responding to our request. B.Artemis is warning us to keep a distance. C.Artemis is inviting us to enter her territory. D.Artemis is feeling comfortable with our presence. 4.What is the text mainly about? A.A remarkable cheetah conservator. B.A reserve for cheetahs. C.A cheetah conservation programme. D.A tour with a cheetah conservator. What do the following animals have in common? Pandas, rhinoceros, Mexican burrowing snakes, pink pigeons and small tooth sawfish. They are all endangered animals! Animals become endangered for a variety of reasons. Sadly, humans are behind every one of them! For centuries, humans have hunted elephants for their tusks, and killed tigers for their beautiful fur, caught fish for food. While we still have elephants, tigers, and fish in the wild, we cannot say the same about many others that have simply died out! Year 1505 was a dreadful turning point in the natural history of the island of Mauritius — European sailors discovered this beautiful island in the Indian Ocean and brought dogs, pigs, monkeys with them. The arrival of humans and those introduced animal species were bad news for dodo birds. About 50 pounds and flightless, dodo birds did not have any natural enemies until then. They picked fruit fallen from trees and built their nests on the ground. Shortly after humans set foot on Mauritius, however, dodo birds realized that they were in big trouble — men killed them for their meat, and those introduced animal species destroyed their nests and ate their eggs. The effects of excessive hunting and foreign species drove dodo birds to first become much fewer and then die out. The last dodo bird was killed in 1681. Humans and animals have always competed for land and other natural resources. We clear an area of a forest for farming. We cut down trees and use wood to build beautiful houses. We build reservoirs to make sure that we have enough water to use. At the same time that we are trying to make our life comfortable, we destroy the habitats of wild animals. More than once we have seen on television that rescue workers are trying their best to save seabirds in spilled oil. More than once we have heard about how emissions of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳的排放) and other gases have raised the earth's temperature and caused global warming. Pollution has a serious and long lasting effect. If we choose to do nothing and continue to pollute our planet Earth, our next generations will have to face an Earth without birds singing and beasts roaring. 1.Which of the following are NOT endangered animals? A.Pandas. B.Rhinoceros. C.Pink pigeons. D.Dodo birds. 2.What does the underlined word “dreadful” (in Paragraph 4) mean? A.Surprising. B.Exciting. C.Awful. D.Quick. 3.Paragraph 5 mainly talks about _______. A.how excessive hunting led to endangerment of animals B.when foreign species entered the island of Mauritius C.the human activities caused the loss of habitats of animals D.pollution played a main role in the worsening of the environment 4.What is the best title for the passage? A.What makes the animals in danger B.How to save the endangered animals C.Pollution and animals D.Don't hunt for animals Benefits of Owning a Dog There’s a reason why dogs are called man’s best friends. A good friend is faithful, will be there to pick you up when you’re down, will keep you on track to reach your goals, and will just be there for you as company. 1 The mental, physical and social benefits of caring for a dog — or any other pet, for that matter — are in large numbers. Here are all the reasons your life will improve with a dog: Owning a dog keeps you active. 2 As a result, dog owners are often inspired toward an active lifestyle to satisfy their dog’s needs. Research conducted by the American Heart Association showed that dog owners were 54 percent more likely to get the recommended amount of exercise than non-dog owners. 3 Owning a dog has many heart-healthy benefits, such as a decrease in blood pressure, decreasing the risk of heart disease. One study showed that non-dog owners who had survived a heart attack were more likely to die within a year than dog owners. You will feel calmer if you own a dog. Dogs provide a calming and familiar presence. 4 One study showed that Alzheimer’s patients who owned dogs had fewer anxiety-induced exacerbations (加重) than Alzheimer’s patients without dogs. Dog owners can promote their communication with others. Dogs provide a natural connection with other people and are great conversation starters. Common questions and comments from dog lovers and owners include: “What breed (品种) are they?”, “How long have you had them?” and “They’re so cute!” 5 A.Keeping a dog makes you live longer. B.That decreases stress and anxiety levels. C.Owning a dog provides safety and peace of mind. D.And that’s exactly what a dog can do for its owner. E.Dogs are naturally energetic and love to play and exercise. F.These conversation starters lead to an immediate social connection. G.This is because a dog fully relies on its owner for attention, meals and cleanliness. A pet clinic in Turkey recently shared a touching story of a homeless dog who carried her unconscious puppy in her mouth and left it at the clinic door as if begging for help. 根据第二段中的“Habituating wildlife is an ongoing process — slowly getting wild animals used to the presence of vehicles and people.(让野生动物适应环境是一个持续的过程——让野生动物慢慢适应车辆和人类的存在)”可知,使野生动物适应环境是一个持续的过程,需要慢慢地让野生动物习惯车辆和人类活动。故选A。 2. 根据第三段中的“I always knew I wanted to work with wild animals.(我一直都知道我想和野生动物一起工作)”以及“Though one day rarely looks the same as another, with tasks ranging from catching wild dogs to mending fences, the chance to spend time with cheetahs is an experience he particularly enjoys.(虽然每一天看起来都不一样,从捕捉野狗到修补篱笆,但有机会与猎豹共度时光是他特别喜欢的经历)”可知,克莱门特选择成为一位自然保育员是因为他喜欢和野生动物待在一起。故选C项。 3. 根据最后一段中的“Though she seems unbothered by our presence, we don’t want to negatively impact her chances of feeding.(虽然她似乎对我们的存在无动于衷,但我们不想对她进食的机会产生负面影响)”以及“So relaxed. The guides and our guests will love her. She’ll be a future star.(那么轻松。导游和我们的客人会喜欢她的。她会成为未来的明星)”可知,阿泰米斯似乎并未对人类的到来感到困扰,仍然在活动和捕食,表现得非常放松,由此可知,画线部分表示阿泰米斯对作者他们的存在感到轻松自在。故选D。 4.主旨大意题。根据第一段中“As a conservation photographer, I spent a day with conservator of Tswalu’s wildlife conservation team Clement Motau to understand what it takes to habituate cheetahs.(作为一名环保摄影师,我花了一天时间与茨瓦卢野生动物保护小组的管理员克莱门特·莫陶一起了解如何让猎豹适应环境)”和下文内容可知,本文主要讲述了作者与猎豹保育员克莱门特在野生动物保护区一天的所见所闻。故选D。 What do the following animals have in common? A.What makes the animals in danger B.How to save the endangered animals C.Pollution and animals D.Don't hunt for animals 【答案】1.D 2.C 3.C 4.A 【导语】这是一篇说明文。 根据第一段“Pandas, rhinoceros, Mexican burrowing snakes, pink pigeons and small tooth sawfish.(熊猫,犀牛,墨西哥穴居蛇,粉红鸽子和小锯齿锯鱼)”以及第二段“They are all endangered animals!(它们都是濒危动物!)” 根据第四段中“The arrival of humans and those introduced animal species were bad news for dodo birds.(人类的到来和那些引入的动物物种对渡渡鸟来说是坏消息)”以及“Shortly after humans set foot on Mauritius, however, dodo birds realized that they were in big trouble — men killed them for their meat, and those introduced animal species destroyed their nests and ate their eggs. The effects of excessive hunting and foreign species drove dodo birds to first become much fewer and then die out. The last dodo bird was killed in 1681.(然而,在人类踏上毛里求斯后不久,渡渡鸟意识到它们遇到了大麻烦——人类为了获取渡渡鸟的肉而杀死了它们,那些引入的动物物种破坏了它们的巢穴,吃了它们的蛋。过度捕猎和外来物种的影响导致渡渡鸟数量急剧减少,然后灭绝。最后一只渡渡鸟在1681年被杀死)”可知,1505年是毛里求斯岛自然历史上一个可怕的转折点,因为欧洲水手在印度洋发现了这个美丽的岛屿,并带来了狗、猪和猴子,最终人类的到来和那些引入的动物物种导致渡渡鸟灭绝了。由此可知,划线词意思是“可怕的”。故选C。 3.主旨大意题。根据第五段“Humans and animals have always competed for land and other natural resources. We clear an area of a forest for farming. We cut down trees and use wood to build beautiful houses. We build reservoirs to make sure that we have enough water to use. At the same time that we are trying to make our life comfortable, we destroy the habitats of wild animals.(人类和动物一直在争夺土地和其他自然资源。我们清理出一片森林用于耕作。我们砍倒树木,用木头建造漂亮的房子。我们修建水库是为了确保有足够的水可用。在我们努力使我们的生活舒适的同时,我们破坏了野生动物的栖息地)”可知,第五段主要谈论了人类活动导致了动物栖息地的丧失。故选C。 4.主旨大意题。根据第三段“For centuries, humans have hunted elephants for their tusks, and killed tigers for their beautiful fur, caught fish for food. While we still have elephants, tigers, and fish in the wild, we cannot say the same about many others that have simply died out!(几个世纪以来,人类为了象牙而猎杀大象,为了它们美丽的皮毛而猎杀老虎,为了食物而捕鱼。虽然我们在野外仍然有大象、老虎和鱼类,但我们不能对许多其他已经灭绝的动物说同样的话!)”结合文章以渡渡鸟的灭绝为例讲述了人类是如何导致其它物种灭绝的。由此可知,A选项“什么使动物处于危险之中”最符合文章标题。故选A。 Benefits of Owning a Dog There’s a reason why dogs are called man’s best friends. 1.根据上文“There’s a reason why dogs are called man’s best friends. A good friend is faithful, will be there to pick you up when you’re down, will keep you on track to reach your goals, and will just be there for you as company. (狗被称为人类最好的朋友是有原因的。好朋友是忠诚的,会在你情绪低落时鼓励你,会帮助你坚持实现目标,并且会一直陪伴在你身边。)” 以及下文“The mental, physical and social benefits of caring for a dog — or any other pet, for that matter — are in large numbers. (照顾一只狗——或者任何其他宠物——所带来的心理、生理和社会益处是众多的。)” 可知,上文作者将狗比作人类最好的朋友,并列举了好朋友的特质。本空位于该比喻之后,应承接这一比喻,说明狗正是能提供这些支持的朋友。D选项“And that’s exactly what a dog can do for its owner. (这正是狗狗能为它的主人所做的。)”完美承接上文对“好朋友”的描述,引出下文关于养狗好处的具体论述,实现了自然过渡,符合题意。故选D。 2.根据上文“Owning a dog keeps you active. (养狗能让你保持活力。)”可知,本段讨论养狗能促进主人保持活跃。本空位于该主题句之后,应解释其原因。E选项“Dogs are naturally energetic and love to play and exercise. (狗天生精力充沛,喜欢玩耍和运动。)”解释了为什么养狗能让人活跃——因为狗自身需要运动,从而促使主人也动起来。并且该选项与下文“dog owners are often inspired toward an active lifestyle to satisfy their dog’s needs”逻辑一致。故选E。 3.根据下文“Owning a dog has many heart-healthy benefits, such as a decrease in blood pressure, decreasing the risk of heart disease. (养狗对心脏健康有很多益处,比如降低血压,减少患心脏病的风险。)”可知,本段讨论养狗对心脏健康的益处。空处需作为本段总起句,概括养狗与心脏健康的关系,A选项“Keeping a dog makes you live longer. (养狗能让你活得更久。)”是对本段内容的概括,因为降低心脏病风险、降低血压等益处最终可能延长寿命,且A选项中“makes you live longer”与下文“One study showed that non-dog owners who had survived a heart attack were more likely to die within a year than dog owners.” 故选A。 4.本段主题为“养狗让人更平静”,根据上文“Dogs provide a calming and familiar presence. 5.本段主题是“养狗能促进与他人的交流”,根据上文“Dogs provide a natural connection with other people and are great conversation starters. (狗狗能与其他人建立天然的联系,是开启对话的绝佳话题。)”可知,提到狗是聊天的开端,并列举了常见话题。空白处需说明这些话题的作用,F选项“These conversation starters lead to an immediate social connection. (这些开场白能迅速建立起社交联系。)”中的“these conversation starters”指代上文提到的关于狗的常见问题和评论,呼应了“促进交流”的主题,并解释了狗如何帮助主人与他人产生互动。故选F。 三、完形填空 A pet clinic in Turkey recently shared a touching story of a homeless dog who carried her unconscious puppy in her mouth and left it at the clinic door as if begging for help.
