Jeremy Clarkson, the 64-year-old TV star, alongside his partner Lisa Hogan, has grown quite fond of the farm animals they’ve been raising for years in Oxford shire. Fans of the Prime Video hit series Clarkson’s Farm have been attracted to Jeremy’s agricultural adventures since it first aired in 2021.
The upcoming third season, set to drop on May 3, sees the farm struggling with a host of troubles from pig chaos to the bite of increased cost and some serious weather difficulty. In the heartfelt first episode of the new season, Jeremy opens up about the tough decision to shut down his farm restaurant, and to painfully downsize the herd: “With the restaurant shutting, we could no longer afford to keep all the cows. We could hang onto the baby cows to fatten them up, but their mums would have to go.”
The sight of his precious cows being packed onto trucks and driven away from the farm left Jeremy visibly moved as he said to his colleague Charlie Ireland: “I’m finding today really quite sad because for the last year or so I have opened the windows and there were cows—and I loved that.” He added, “It just cheers up my heart every morning to see them,” while facing the reality that the night would be restless with the baby cows upset over the loss of their mothers.
When Jeremy asked about the future of his beloved cow Pepper, Charlie gently advised, “I wouldn’t ask too many questions about Pepper. Don’t ask questions you don’t want to know the answer to.” The show then cuts to the adorable home video shot by Lisa of the baby and mummy cows causing chaos in their garden, followed by a sad scene of Jeremy with his arm around Lisa, silently watching the cows being led away. Eduardo Rivera learned how to farm from his grandfather, who grew black beans, peaches, carrots and tomatoes in Zacatecas, Mexico. His playground was the farm — the chickens, the animals, the crops — and now, while he is living in Stillwater, Minnesota, it's still the same.
“As a kid, I didn't really have much in terms of possession (拥有) of toys or a television,” he says. “Your playground was outside. I never needed anything, honestly. We had our animals, we had fruit, and we had water. I just grew up very lucky.”
When he was 10, Rivera and his family moved to Arizona. He farmed in Arizona and moved to Minnesota six years ago. He now hopes to change the face of farming by providing organic produce for low-income Latinos.
Rivera runs Sin Fronteras, a 3½-acre farm which he started in 2014. He rents the land from a local farmer. “There are a lot of Latinos farming, but ... not a lot of us own land,” Rivera says.
About 60 percent of Sin Fronteras' business is wholesale; Rivera delivers to restaurants and food co-ops twice a week. The rest is sold through a community-supported agriculture program and at farmers' markets.
Rivera's five-year business plan calls for him to own his own farm. His 10-year plan includes opening a farm-to-table restaurant that specializes in Mexican food.
“Not having any infrastructure (基础设施) or money, I'll have to grow for four years to achieve the numbers and then ask for a loan to buy my farm,” he says. “I'm going to rent one more year, and then I hope to be able to buy my own place. I don't see myself doing anything else.”
Once he owns his land, Rivera says he will be able to grow in the winter, too. “I want to put money into infrastructure to be able to do things year-round,” he says. “There's a farmer in Detroit Lakes who grows peaches in a greenhouse. There're a lot of things you could be doing in the winter too.”
28. How does Rivera feel about his childhood years on the farm?
A. Encouraged. B. Regretful. C. Satisfied. D. Ashamed.
29. What problem does Rivera face now?
A. His farm needs more hands. B. He doesn't have his own land.
C. His produce doesn't sell well. D. He can only grow one or two crops.
30. What is Rivera's plan?
A. To rent more land. B. To open a restaurant.
C. To raise the prices of vegetables. D. To teach local people about farming.
31. What is important to Rivera for changing the face of farming?
A. Building greenhouses. B. Introducing foreign fruit.
C. Joining another modern farm. D. Developing new farming methods.

You’d never mistake a goat for a dog, but on an unreasonably warm afternoon, I almost do. I’m on a farm in northern Germany, trying to keep my head due to work stress. Sixty Nigeria goats are taking turns crashing their horns (角) against wooden fences. Then, during the chaos, something remarkable happens. One of the animals raises her head and stares thoughtfully at me, her widely spaced eyes and odd pupils seeking to make contact — and perhaps even connection.
It’s a look we see in other humans, in our pets and in our primate (灵长类) relatives, but not in animals raised for food. Or maybe we just haven’t been looking hard enough.
That’s a cool idea here at Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN), one of the world’s leading centers for exploring the minds of goats, pigs and other livestock. Scientists here are exploring the mental and emotional lives of animals we’ve lived with for thousands of years, yet, from a cognitive (认知的) perspective, know almost nothing about.
The work is part of an effort to overturn the idea that livestock are dumb and unworthy of scientific attention. Over the past decade, researchers at FBN and elsewhere have shown that pigs show signs of empathy and that goats match dogs in some tests of social intelligence. What shocks some experts is that cows can be potty (便盆) trained, suggesting a self-awareness behind the blank stares and chewing.
“There’s a lot to be learned by studying the mental lives of these creatures,” says Christopher, a Johns Hopkins university psychologist. Disregarding livestock, he says, has been a “missed opportunity” by the scientific community. The field faces challenges, however. Farm animals can be huge, many are hard to train, and traditional funders and standard journals have generally rejected such studies. But as scientists push past these obstacles, they are getting insights not only into minds of livestock, but into the evolution of our own cognition. What they learn could even change the way we house and treat these creatures.
32. Why does the author mention Nigeria goats?
A. To conserve wild life. B. To conduct researches.
C. To relieve work stress. D. To introduce livestock studies.
33. Which of the following has been confirmed by scientists?
A. Nigeria goats are mild animals.
B. Pigs can relate to others in some cases.
C. Goats beat dogs in some intelligence tests.
D. Self-awareness exists behind the goats’ blank stares.
34. Why are the farm animal studies ignored?
A. Farm animals are stupid.
B. These studies lack practical values.
C. Few sponsors are willing to fund those studies.
D. Farm animals are unworthy of scientific research.
35. What is Christopher’s attitude towards farm animal studies?
A. Dismissive. B. Favorable. C. Objective. D. Cautious.

A hobby farm is a small farm that's run for your own pleasure rather than for profit. 36 Where do you start? What do you need to know first? With these guiding principles, you can stay on course.
Start small. If you jump into hobby farming with both feet, there's a good chance you'll feel overwhelmed (不知所措的) with the care of seven or eight types of crops that are new to you. If you start with just one or two major crops per year, you'll have a chance to learn as you go with a lower rate of failure. 37
Don't try to be profitable. If you're running a true business that you hope will earn you something beyond the food you eat, you're not a hobby farmer. 38 Remember that you got into hobby farming for the fun of it.
Talk to other farmers. By talking to other people who have done — and are still doing — what you hope to do, you'll get basic and in-depth knowledge on farming. Even if you're in an urban area, there are probably other people who share similar goals. 39 Consider joining a group that shares tips, tools, and other resources.
Be flexible with your choices. 40 You thought you'd enjoy growing corn, but find that you're more interested in growing green beans. That's okay. This is your farm — do whatever you want with it.
A. Take the time to connect with them.
B. You'll feel more relaxed as you add new crops each year.
C. This depends on how much time you can spend on farming.
D. You'll get used to a new relationship with farming practice.
E. If you're just getting started with your hobby farm, things might seem difficult.
F. Feel free to try different crops on your farm, and know that it's okay to change your mind.
G. You might make a little money by selling produce, but avoid spending more time selling than farming.

Grandma's lively farm had always been a paradise where Emma had great fun during vocation!
But this time, her grandma couldn't get out of bed! She fell ill.
"Don't worry," Emma told her grandma, "I'll look after everything!" She knew how to feed all the animals: it was easy! Food pellets for the chickens and ducks. Oats for the horse. Plenty of grass for the four sheep and the goat.
She could also water the vegetables and collect eggs from the chicken coop."What a great help you are," Grandma said when Emma brought her a bowl of soup for lunch.
"It's no trouble!" Emma smiled
"I'll have to get up soon," Grandma sighed. "Dolly will need milking." Dolly the goat had to be milked every day. In fact, she would come outside and bleat when it was time! But Emma thought that her grandma still looked pale and shaky...
"I can do it!" Emma said confidently. She hadn't tried milking yet, but she had watched Grandma closely! Grandma would always put on her special dress and straw hat, get the bucket from the tool shed, get Dolly to the milking shed, and get everything done.
When Dolly bleated to be milked, Emma went out to see her. She expected the goat to follow her to the milking shed like she did with Grandma, but the animal just stood there."Come on, Dolly," Emma said. "I'm milking you today. Grandma's sick, so we have to work together."
Dolly just bleated impatiently, moving her feet uncomfortably.
"Maybe I need to speak more firmly," Emma thought. "Now listen, Dolly. I want you to follow me to the milking shed, right now!" But Dolly wandered across the yard!
"Hey, come back here!" Emma called. Dolly stopped and turned around. She didn't like this little stranger. Grandma never yelled at her! Emma was at a loss what to do next.

Jeremy looked depressed, seemingly on the edge of tears during the emotional goodbye, as he and Lisa stood wordlessly.

【答案】28.C 29.B 30.B 31.A
I never needed anything, honestly. We had our animals, we had fruit, and we had water及I just grew up very lucky可知,Rivera觉得自己在农场长大很幸运。
He rents the land from a local farmer及Rivera所说的There are a lot of Latinos farming, but ... not a lot of us own land可知,Rivera及许多其他拉丁美洲人没有属于自己的土地,只能向当地的农场主租借。
30. B。 His 10year plan includes opening a farmtotable restaurant that specializes in Mexican food可知,Rivera计划将来开一家墨西哥风味的餐厅。
31. A。 He now hopes to change the face of farming by providing organic produce for lowincome Latinos及最后一段中Rivera所说的I want to put money into infrastructure to be able to do things yearround和There's a farmer in Detroit Lakes who grows peaches in a greenhouse可推断,Rivera计划在拥有自己的土地后进行基础设施建设,效仿他人建造温室来解决冬季种植问题,这可以帮助他改变当地农业的现状。

A. Dismissive. B. Favorable. C. Objective. D. Cautious.
D 33. B 34. C 35. B
根据第一段的“Sixty Nigeria goats are taking turns crashing their horns (角) against wooden fences. Then, during the chaos, something remarkable happens. One of the animals raises her head and stares thoughtfully at me, her widely spaced eyes and odd pupils seeking to make contact—and perhaps even connection.(60只尼日利亚山羊轮流用角撞击木栅栏。
根据第四段的“Over the past decade, researchers at FBN and elsewhere have shown that pigs show signs of empathy and that goats match dogs in some tests of social intelligence.(在过去的十年里,FBN和其他地方的研究人员已经表明,猪表现出同理心的迹象,山羊在一些社会智力测试中与狗相匹配)”可知,科学家已经观察到猪表现出同情心的迹象,能与他人的感受产生共鸣。故选B。
34. C。 根据第五段的“The field faces challenges, however. Farm animals can be huge, many are hard to train, and traditional funders and standard journals have generally rejected such studies.(然而,该领域面临挑战。农场动物可能很大,许多很难训练,传统的资助者和标准期刊通常拒绝接受此类研究)”可知,由于农场动物体型大、难以训练,以及传统资助者和标准期刊通常拒绝这类研究,导致农场动物研究难以获得资助;由此可知,农场动物研究被忽视的原因是很少有赞助商愿意资助农场的研究。故选C。
35. B。推理判断题。根据第五段Christopher的话““There’s a lot to be learned by studying the mental lives of these creatures,” says Christopher, a Johns Hopkins university psychologist. Disregarding livestock, he says, has been a “missed opportunity” by the scientific community.(‘通过研究这些生物的心理生活,我们可以学到很多东西,’约翰霍普金斯大学心理学家克里斯托弗说。他说,忽视牲畜是科学界‘错失的机会’)”可知,Christopher认为研究这些动物的精神生活能学到很多,忽视它们是一个错失的机会。由此推知,他对农场动物研究是支持的。故选B。

阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

E 37. B 38. G 39. A 40. F
If you start with just one or two ... a lower rate of failure可知,你刚开始经营休闲农场时,应该从小做起,先尝试种植一两种作物。
Don't try to be profitable及Remember that you got into hobby farming for the fun of it可知,本段讲述的是你不要靠自己的休闲农场赚钱,因为这不是你经营休闲农场的初衷。
39. A。 由空前的Talk to other farmers和there are probably other people who share similar goals及空后的Consider joining a group that shares tips, tools, and other resources可知,A项符合语境。 A项中的them指代other people who share similar goals,且connect with与Talk to及joining均与交流有关。
40. F。 Be flexible with your choices及空后所给实例可知,F项符合语境,该项中的free与本段中的flexible同义。

41-45 BCACD 46-50 DCACB 51-55 BDADA
42. C。由上文中的good memories of helping out in the garden以及下文介绍园艺教孩子成长可知,garden是本文关键词。
43. A。 故rich(丰富的)符合语境。
Help him、teach him、work on、Talk to him可知,作者这里是说在花园里劳作时,家长要给予孩子一定的帮助,这样他们才能有所收获。故effort(努力)符合语境。
46. D。由本句中的preschoolers learn to be responsible and patient和as it grows into a plant可知,孩子只有在经历过“细心照看(caring for)”一粒种子直到它长成一株植物的过程,才能懂得责任与耐心。
47. C。 故selfsatisfaction(自我满足)符合语境。
故naturally(自然地)符合语境。
50. B。 Help him to make a chart ... teach him to predict ... work on basic math concepts ... Talk to him about the principle of cause and ...
51. B。由本句中的make a chart of his plants、predict、each week可知,这里是说帮助孩子预测植物每周的生长“变化(change)”。
53. A。由本句中的as he waters the seeds and they later sprout可知,种子被浇灌然后才能发芽体现的是一种因果关系。 the principle of cause and effect是固定表达,意为“因果原理”。
54. D。由本句中的from sowing seeds to growing plants to harvesting flowers and veggies可知,经历播种、种植和收获后,生命完整的周期就“展现(unfolds)”在了孩子面前。
55. A。 Believe me, the memories of planting flowers next to Mom are sure to be sweet是对本空内容的解释,说明从事园艺活动是一种可以把人们紧密“联系(connect)”起来的不错的方法。

Dear Ryan,
I am writing to share with you a recent experience I had with housework.
One morning, I woke up to the realization that my room was in a complete mess. Determined to tidy up, I immediately sprang into action. I began by throwing away garbage and unnecessary items, and then proceeded to neatly arrange the books that were scattered across my sofa, floor, and desk back onto the bookshelf. It was quite a laborious process, but the end result was truly satisfying. Not only did my room look sparkling clean, but I also felt a sense of accomplishment and pride in my hard work.

One possible version:
All at once, an idea popped into her head. She remembered that Grandma always sang a soft song when milking Dolly. Maybe music could calm the goat down. Emma quickly ran to the house and fetched her grandma's old radio. She turned it on and adjusted the channel until she found a gentle melody. As the music filled the barn, Emma approached Dolly again. This time, she spoke softly to the goat while gently stroking her back. Dolly seemed to relax a bit, her ears no longer twitching nervously. Encouraged, Emma carefully placed the bucket under Dolly's udder and started to milk her slowly.
Just at that moment, Grandma's dresses and the straw hat hanging over a chair caught her sight. Memories of Grandma flooded her mind, giving her the strength and confidence she needed. She imagined Grandma was there with her, guiding her. With a deep breath, Emma focused on the task at hand. To her delight, milk began to stream into the bucket steadily. A big smile spread across her face. When she finished, she held the full bucket up triumphantly, feeling proud of herself for overcoming the difficulty and fulfilling her promise to take care of the farm.
