Less referenced are the women who took up spears, bows, swords, and clubs to fight. Here’s a look at some of history’s women warriors out of this world. Mulan in ancient China The Disney movie Mulan has received enormous success. Mulan’s story goes back to the sixth century and was written in the 11th-century “Ballad of Mulan”. In the eloquent poem, the girl took the place of her elderly father in the army, since he had no adult son, and she fought against invaders as a man for 12 years. Boudicca: revenge against Rome Boudicca, the queen of the Iceni of East Anglia, Britain, did not set out to be a warrior. But after her husband, the Iceni ruler, died in 60/61AD, the Romans whipped her and her daughters, and she had no choice but to make a stand. Boudicca raised an army and destroyed Camulodunum, Londinium, and Verulamium of Rome. Joan of Arc: soldier of God At the height of the 15th-century Hundred Years’ War between France and England, a young peasant girl came to the rescue of France. Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc) was just a teen when in 1429 she approached the dauphin Charles, the heir to the French throne who had yet to be crowned (为……加冕) (the English held Reims, France’s traditional coronation site). She was given permission to raise troops and ride forth. Joan and her troops liberated the besieged city of Orléans, clearing the way for Charles Ⅶ to be crowned at last, giving France a rightful king. Tang Sai-er: rebel leader During China’s 15th-century Ming Dynasty, Tang Sai-er, a young girl from Putai (present-day Shandong province), was taught martial arts by her father. Her world changed when she lost her parents, and then her husband, at a time when the emperor imposed hefty taxes and flood and drought ravaged the land. She raised a peasant army in 1420, successfully fighting Ming soldiers. In some accounts, she won one battle by creating a flying demon army out of paper dolls. At last she was defeated and fled, and was never found. 1. What motivated Mulan to join the army according to the “Ballad of Mulan”? A. She wanted to protect her country from invaders. B. She replaced her elderly father who had no adult son. C. She wished to prove women could fight as men. D. She admired famous warriors of her time. 2. What was the direct result of Boudicca’s war? A. Several Roman cities were destroyed. B. The Romans immediately left Britain. C. She defeated the French army in battle. D. She crowned herself as queen of England. 3. Which common feature did Joan of Arc and Tang Sai⁃er share? A. Both were crowned as rulers. B. Both were from noble families. C. Both raised armies at a young age. D. Both won against the English invaders in the final battle. B It was a cold Wednesday morning when Pete Stamatis, an industrial engineer at General Motors (GM), was driving to work at the Parma Metal Center in Ohio. His routine commute changed instantly when he saw a vehicle lose control and crash into a tree. Stamatis quickly pulled over to help. He moved the driver, passenger, and their dog into his car — then learned a second dog was still inside. After safely rescuing the animal, Stamatis called 911. Moments later, a tractor trailer slammed into the disabled car, crushing it. His fast response prevented a tragedy. This instinct to act wasn’t accidental. By day, Stamatis manages plant quality, but by night he throws himself into his work as a volunteer firefighter in Amherst, Ohio. His journey into firefighting began in 2020 while finishing his industrial engineering degree at Ohio State. Inspired by meeting a volunteer firefighter during an internship — and raised with a strong sense of service — he decided to join a department himself. “It was a way I could make a difference for the people who need it most,” he says. After graduating in 2020, Stamatis joined GM's TRACK rotation program and simultaneously entered the Northeast Oakland Fire Academy in Michigan. He volunteered with the Troy Fire Department before relocating to Ohio in 2023. Now, as an industrial engineer at Parma, he continues to serve as a firefighter in Amherst. “One of the best aspects of fire service is being able to help people on their worst days,” Stamatis says. “Of course, I never want there to be a car accident or fire, but when there is, I want to be there to do my part.” His dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. “Pete is a kind guy with a big heart who had the guts to make a huge impact on a terrifying situation,” says Amherst Fire Chief Brandon Dimacchia. “We’re lucky to have him on our team.” 4. What mainly made Stamatis respond quickly to the car crash? A. A 911 operator’s guidance. B. His industrial engineer training. C. His volunteer firefighter experience. D. Past experience in handling his own car accident. 5. Which is TRUE about Stamatis’s start in firefighting? A He trained in Ohio right after moving there. B. He began considering it while finishing college. C. Only a volunteer firefighter inspired him to join. D. He joined the Troy Fire Department before a fire academy. 6. What is the meaning of the underlined part in the last paragraph? A. A person willing to take risks in daily work. B. A person having the chance to solve a difficult problem. C. A person having the ability to predict dangerous accidents. D. A person brave enough to make a difference in a scary event. 7. Which of the following is TRUE about Stamatis’s job as a firefighter? A. His firefighting sparked his interest in GM. B. His strong sense of service made him engage in firefighting. C. His firefighting made the same difference to people in need as GM work. D. The engineering skills he gained at GM have benefited his firefighting work. C It was the start of the summer holidays, and I was excited to take my seven⁃year⁃old son, Felix, to a free activity day at a football club. The children had fitness classes, lunch and a stadium tour — a wonderful opportunity. Felix was thrilled, chatting eagerly to other kids, and I felt the excitement too. But I soon noticed something unsettling. While many children ran around joyfully, others seemed disengaged, giving blank stares. Later, some families arrived late, sat silently and offered no apologies. Recently, the “Gen Z stare” has gone viral — young people giving vacant (无神的) looks in social settings, often linked to screen use. Yet what worries me more is the “Gen Alpha stare”, where children not only look blank but also neglect basic politeness. At another event, Felix tried to talk to a boy drawing beside him, but every attempt was met with silence. Even at the beach, I saw kids hunched over (伏在) phones instead of enjoying the sea. Of course, the pandemic (大流行病) harmed children’s social skills; nearly half of parents reported declines. But screens play a huge role too. Three⁃quarters of five⁃to seven⁃year⁃olds now use tablets, and one⁃fifth of toddlers (学步的儿童) own smartphones. Adults are hardly better, spending over three hours daily on phones. Studies even warn that when children see parents absorbed in screens, their communication skills can weaken. That’s why I avoid endless scrolling around Felix and limit his screen time to safe programmes. I also encourage him to greet neighbours, chat with waiters and join conversations. Building trust through small interactions helps him feel secure and connected. I worry that without such practices, children will grow into lonely adults. Phones and the pandemic may be partly to blame, but parents must now step up — encouraging free play, eye contact and creativity. And when children retreat into silence, we shouldn’t ignore it. After all, it costs nothing to be polite, and the future of our communities depends on it. 8. Why did the author describe Felix’s eagerness at the football club in para. 1? A. To highlight the value of free activities. B. To stress the importance of football in childhood. C. To show Felix was more athletic than other children. D. To contrast it with other children’s non-participation. 9. What can we know about the “Gen Alpha stare”? A. It is caused entirely by smartphone addiction. B. It shows children are tired after pandemic lockdowns. C. It is simply another popular trend like the “Gen Z stare”. D. It reflects not just blank looks but declining social manners. 10. What does the author intend to convey by mentioning adults’ screen habits? A. Adults are also victims of the pandemic. B. Technology has the same impact on people of all ages. C. The screen time for adults is different from that for children. D. Children’s poor communication skills may result from copying adults. 11. What does the author suggest doing in the last two paragraphs? A. Replacing screen time with academic guidance. B. Encouraging polite social interaction in daily life. C. Forbidding children from using devices with screens completely. D. Organizing more official activity days like the football club day. D Birds that are active during the day sing later into the night in areas with heavy light pollution, according to research by Brent Pease of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and Neil Gilbert of Oklahoma State University. Analyzing more than 180 million bird vocalizations (歌声) worldwide alongside satellite imagery, they found that under the brightest skies, birds extended daily activity by nearly an hour. Their paper, “Light pollution prolongs avian (鸟类的) activity”, was published in Science on Aug. 21. The project came about in Pease’s effort to excite undergraduates about birds. Two years ago, he installed a microphone to broadcast local birdsong on campus. Later, he adopted BirdWeather devices, which use Wi-Fi, GPS, sensors and AI connected to the BirdNET database, enabling real-time detection of bird species. This opened new opportunities to study not only where birds are found but also how they behave continuously. Just as trail cameras revolutionized mammal studies decades ago, BirdWeather and BirdNET now allow large-scale behavioral studies of birds. Using machine learning, BirdNET transforms recordings into spectrograms (声谱图) that identify avian species against a database of over 6,000. This allows analysis of continuous audio data that would otherwise take lifetimes to process. Pease and Gilbert were the first to apply and analyze the BirdWeather data in this way. They have many research options, but first they focused on responses to light pollution. Pease noted, on average birds stayed active an hour longer. Actual times varied by species. The researchers then asked why. A key factor turned out to be photoreceptor sensitivity Species with proportionally larger eyes responded more strongly to artificial light than those with smaller eyes. Whether this shift benefits or harms birds remains uncertain. Extended activity may increase opportunities for feeding and mating, but reduced sleep could hurt long-term health. Since 2021, BirdWeather has collected over 1.4 billion vocalizations from 11,000 locations worldwide. Pease called the project “citizen-science at its best”, noting that a tool built for backyard birdwatchers has become a powerful engine for wildlife research. He and Gilbert plan to continue applying the technology to explore the impacts of human forces, particularly light pollution, on global bird populations. 12. Why did Pease set up a microphone on campus initially? A. To support a global study. B. To document local noise levels. C. To measure effects of artificial light. D. To inspire students’ curiosity about birds. 13. What key advance did BirdWeather and BirdNET bring? A Identifying unknown species worldwide. B. Processing continuous bird behavior at scale. C. Replacing fieldwork on birds with satellite tracking. D. Tracking the regular movement of birds from one place to another. 14. Which feature best explains birds’ varied reactions to light? A. Relative eye size and sensitivity. B. Developmental background. C. Geographic range. D. Voice strength. 15. What’s the best title of the passage? A. Citizen Science in Wildlife Research B. How Artificial Light Affects Birds’ Eyes C. Light Pollution Keeps Birds Active Longer D. BirdWeather: A Revolutionary Tool for Bird Watching School sports meets are exciting events filled with energy and competition.___16___ Taking proactive steps to protect yourself can ensure you enjoy every moment without sidelining(退出比赛) yourself with pain or discomfort.  Never skip proper warm-ups. Before diving into any sport, spend 5-10 minutes on dynamic stretches such as leg swings, arm circles, and body twists.___17___This process loosens tight muscles, increases blood flow to your limbs, and readies your body for the sudden bursts of activity that sports demand—all of which significantly lower the risk of strains or pulls.  ___18___Loose clothing might feel comfortable, but it can get caught in equipment like hurdles or basketball hoops, leading to trips or tugs. Opt for fitted, moisture-wicking fabrics that move with your body instead. Even more crucial is footwear: running shoes with shock-absorbing soles cushion your feet during sprints, while basketball shoes with reinforced ankles prevent awkward twists when changing direction quickly.  Strictly follow the rules. Coaches and organizers design these rules to keep everyone safe. In relay races, for example, passing the baton within the designated zone avoids collisions with other teams. In high jump, waiting for the mat to clear before your attempt prevents dangerous crashes. Ignoring these guidelines isn't just unfair.___19___ Don't forget to cool down after competing. Once your event ends, walk briskly for 5-10 minutes instead of collapsing on the grass. Follow this with static(静止的) stretches, holding each position (like touching your toes or stretching your chest) for 15-30 seconds. This helps your heart rate return to normal, reduces muscle tightness, and speeds up recovery.___20___ A. Invest in suitable gear(装备). B It's a sure way to invite accidents. C. Prepare good equipment in advance. D. Or you will end up in the school clinic. E. And you'll be ready for your next event or practice. F. However, nothing puts a damper on(使扫兴) the fun like an unexpected injury. G. Pair these with light jogging or jumping jacks(开合跳) to gradually raise your heart rate. Since 2017, a handmade wooden cabinet (储藏柜) in the lobby of the Caldwell Police Department has quietly been making a powerful impact. Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny (复活节兔子) turn out to be Mum and Dad, and heroes fade away. I don't know if most people remember this event, but I know when it happened to me. On an ordinary summer day, the kind where the sun hung high in the sky, painting the grass a vivid green and making the air hum with the sound of crickets, my grandfather told me one of his crazy stories. I was hooked, my eyes wide with excitement as I hung on every word. Without a second thought, I headed off to find the Indians that Grandpa said lived in the woods. After some hours searching without success, I rushed back to ask Grandpa with disappointment. “How come none of your stories ever come true?” “Well, sometimes you have to make them come true,” he answered, “I once had a friend named Huck Finn who made his own adventures.” He started to tell me about his buddy (密友) Huck, who floated down the Mississippi River on a raft (木筏). I sat listening to him, believing every word he said. When he finished, I went off to have my own adventure. Two hours later I had a small and badly made raft. I took it to the pond along with a branch from a tree to use as an oar (桨). I couldn’t swim—not even a little—and my parents had told me many times to stay away from the pond, warning me of its deep water. But today, fueled by Grandpa’s story and my own sense of adventure, I didn’t care. I had the raft, and that was all that mattered. So with a big shove, I pushed it out into the pond and jumped on top, my arms outstretched like a sailor. I was fine for a total of four seconds; then I started to sink. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As my grandpa came to my rescue, I was lying on the ground, wet and weak. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 名校联考联合体2025年秋季高二第二次联考 英 语 时量:120分钟 满分:150分 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 How much is the shirt? Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc) was just a teen when in 1429 she approached the dauphin Charles, the heir to the French throne who had yet to be crowned (为…… 1429年,让娜・达克(即圣女贞德)年仅十几岁,她主动拜见了法国王储查理——当时他尚未加冕(因为英国人控制了法国传统的加冕地兰斯))”以及“Tang Sai-er: rebel leader”部分中“During China’s 15th-century Ming Dynasty, Tang Sai-er, a young girl from Putai (present-day Shandong province), was taught martial arts by her father.(在15世纪中国明朝时期,蒲台(今山东省)少女唐赛儿自幼随父习武)”和“She raised a peasant army in 1420, successfully fighting Ming soldiers.(1420年,她组建农民起义军屡败明军)”可知,贞德(Joan of Arc)在1429年时是“a teen(青少年)”,获准组建军队,唐赛儿(Tang Sai-er)在1420年组建农民军,且文章中称她为“young girl”。 C。 B It was a cold Wednesday morning when Pete Stamatis, an industrial engineer at General Motors (GM), was driving to work at the Parma Metal Center in Ohio. A A 911 operator’s guidance. B. His industrial engineer training. C. His volunteer firefighter experience. D. Past experience in handling his own car accident. 5. Which is TRUE about Stamatis’s start in firefighting? A. He trained in Ohio right after moving there. 4. C 5. B 6. D 7. D 9. D 10. D 11. 作者在第一段先详细描述儿子 Felix 的积极状态:“Felix was thrilled, chatting eagerly to other kids, and I felt the excitement too.(费利克斯非常兴奋,热切地和其他孩子聊天,我也感受到了这份兴奋)”,随后立即用转折词 “But” 引出其他孩子的消极表现:“But I soon noticed something unsettling. While many children ran around joyfully, others seemed disengaged, giving blank stares. Later, some families arrived late, sat silently and offered no apologies.(但我很快注意到一些令人不安的情况。 根据第二段中的“Yet what worries me more is the “Gen Alpha stare”, where children not only look blank but also neglect basic politeness.(但更让我担心的是“阿尔法世代凝视”——孩子们不仅眼神空洞,还忽视基本礼仪。)” 根据第三段中的“Adults are hardly better, spending over three hours daily on phones. Studies even warn that when children see parents absorbed in screens, their communication skills can weaken.(成年人也好不到哪里去,每天花在手机上的时间超过3小时。 根据倒数第二段中的“I also encourage him to greet neighbours, chat with waiters and join conversations.(我还鼓励他和邻居打招呼、和服务员聊天、参与对话。)”及最后一段中的“Phones and the pandemic may be partly to blame, but parents must now step up — encouraging free play, eye contact and creativity. And when children retreat into silence, we shouldn't ignore it. After all, it costs nothing to be polite, and the future of our communities depends on it.(手机和疫情或许要承担部分责任,但家长现在必须行动起来 —— 鼓励孩子自由玩耍、进行眼神交流并培养创造力。 D Birds that are active during the day sing later into the night in areas with heavy light pollution, according to research by Brent Pease of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and Neil Gilbert of Oklahoma State University. A. Identifying unknown species worldwide. BirdWeather: A Revolutionary Tool for Bird Watching 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第二段第一、二句“The project came about in Pease’s effort to excite undergraduates about birds. Two years ago, he installed a microphone to broadcast local birdsong on campus.(这个项目的诞生,源于Pease为激发本科生对鸟类的兴趣所做的努力。 根据第二段中“This opened new opportunities to study not only where birds are found but also how they behave continuously. Just as trail cameras revolutionized mammal studies decades ago, BirdWeather and BirdNET now allow large-scale behavioral studies of birds.(这为研究鸟类的分布情况以及它们的持续行为提供了新的机遇。正如几十年前的追踪相机改变了对哺乳动物的研究一样,如今BirdWeather和BirdNET使得对鸟类的大型行为研究成为可能)”以及第三段中“Using machine learning, BirdNET transforms recordings into spectrograms (声谱图) that identify avian species against a database of over 6,000. This allows analysis of continuous audio data that would otherwise take lifetimes to process.(借助机器学习技术,BirdNET会将录音转化为声谱图,再通过比对一个包含6000多种鸟类的数据库来识别鸟类物种。 根据第四段中的“A key factor turned out to be photoreceptor sensitivity (光感受器敏感度). Species with proportionally larger eyes responded more strongly to artificial light than those with smaller eyes.(一个关键因素被证明是光感受器敏感度。 故选A。 根据第一段“Birds that are active during the day sing later into the night in areas with heavy light pollution, according to research by Brent Pease of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and Neil Gilbert of Oklahoma State University.(根据南伊利诺伊大学卡本代尔分校的Brent Pease与俄克拉荷马州立大学的Neil Gilbert的研究,在光污染严重的区域,白天活跃的鸟类会将鸣叫(活动)延续到更晚的夜晚)”并结合全文内容可知,文章核心围绕一项研究展开,该研究探讨了光污染如何延长鸟类的活动时间,同时介绍了研究采用的技术(BirdWeather和BirdNET)及研究发现。 School sports meets are exciting events filled with energy and competition.___16___ Taking proactive steps to protect yourself can ensure you enjoy every moment without sidelining(退出比赛) yourself with pain or discomfort. B. It's a sure way to invite accidents. 16. F 17. G 18. A 19. B 20. For example, students can quickly clarify doubts without waiting for the teacher, which helps them keep up with the lesson. Second, AI can assist in organizing notes and summarizing key points, making revision easier and more effective. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 I was fine for a total of four seconds; then I started to sink. The cold water rushed in, making me shiver. I waved my arms and kicked hard, trying to stay afloat. I saw the raft floating nearby and reached out to grab it, but missed again and again. As panic set in, I remembered Grandpa’s words about Huck being smart in adventures. I found the branch oar I’d dropped and pushed it against the water hard. Finally, I pulled myself onto the raft. As my grandpa came to my rescue, I was lying on the ground, wet and weak. “Grandpa, was I stupid to make this raft?” I asked, my voice shaking. He sat down, smiling. “No, you were brave, but brave people need to be careful too.” I looked at my broken raft and suddenly understood that Grandpa’s stories were not just fantasies, but a way to tell me to chase adventures wisely. I realized then that the change wasn’t in my grandfather, but in me. I was growing up. 词汇激活 行为类 ①挣扎:waved my arms and kicked hard/struggled desperately/thrashed wildly in the water ②抓住:grab/seize/hold ③推动:pushed it against the water/rowed with it/paddled furiously 情绪类 ①愚蠢的:stupid/silly ②声音颤抖:my voice shaking/in a trembling voice/with a quiver in my voice 【点睛】[高分句型1] As panic set in, I remembered Grandpa’s words about Huck being smart in adventures.(由从属连词as引导时间状语从句) [高分句型2] I found the branch oar I’d dropped and pushed it against the water hard.(由关系代词that/which引导定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
