Wildlife faces threats (威胁) from habitat destruction, pollution, and other human actions. Although protecting wildlife may seem too hard at times, even small actions in your own neighborhood can help protect many different animals. Here are some tips on how to protect wildlife through small actions.
☆Create wildlife friendly areas in your backyard.
When you are trying to make your garden more beautiful, you can choose plants that can provide food and shelter for native wildlife. This will also help cut down on pollution.
☆Avoid harming the natural ecosystem in your area.
Some plants from other places can kill or harm native plants that provide food and shelter for wildlife.
☆Have a greener lifestyle.
By using less water and fewer fuels, you will be helping to protect the wildlife around you. Take buses or the subway when you can, turn off electric devices when you’re not using them, take shorter showers, and keep your room temperature at or below 68 Fahrenheit degrees during winter.
☆Buy products that are wildlife friendly.
Don’t buy products that are made from endangered animals. Keep in mind that some endangered animals are killed by traps or hunters who are after wildlife within the same habitat.
☆Donate money or time to organizations that protect wildlife and their habitats.
You can give money to organizations or groups that protect wildlife species in your neighborhood.
21. What is one way to create wildlife-friendly areas in your backyard?
A. Avoiding any kind of gardening. B. Building large structures for animals.

Nick Perez and his 8-year-old daughter, Lucy Moore drove eight hours from Cecil County, Md., to Kentucky’s Cave Run Lake in hopes of catching the musky fish (梭子鱼).
After nearly 10 hours in the rain, Lucy finally caught a 40-inch musky wider than any Perez had ever seen. It was all that hard work. Perez said, “There are guys I know that are 60 years old who have never caught one. And at the time she was almost 9.”
Now, three years later, 12-year-old Lucy Moore has continued to be a pioneer in a sport dominated (占据) by men. This summer, Lucy became both the first female and the youngest person to receive Maryland’s Master Angler Milestone Award (奖).
To receive the award, she had to catch 10 different kinds of fish — all of which had to be “trophy (奖杯) size”. But Lucy is not in it for the awards. She said her favourite part about fishing is getting to explore nature with her dad. “Fish never really live in ugly places,” Lucy said.
The FishMaryland programme from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources lists more than 60 kinds of fish and the sizes they must be in order to be able to count towards receiving the award. The FishMaryland programme recognises fishers with three awards: the Angler, the Expert Angler and the Master Angler. Erik Zlokovitz, leader of the Department of Natural Resources, said, “Usually people focus on two or three kinds, and she’s got 10 that are all trophy size, so it’s doubly impressive.”
The FishMaryland award programme mainly want to let locals know the state’s large biodiversity, as well as break away from invasive (入侵的) fish by encouraging people to catch and eat them. Zlokovitz said he was excited to see a young girl like Lucy like fishing because he believes she can help spread the joy of fishing to younger generations. She may encourage other young fishers and girls to join in the programme.
24. What was the main purpose of Nick Perez and his daughter’s trip to Cave Run Lake?
A. To catch the musky fish. B. To explore nature together.
C. To receive an award. D. To join in a fishing competition.
25. What is the requirement to win the fishing award?
A. Getting over 60 kinds of fish.
B. Being the first female to catch a musky.
C. Catching the biggest musky within 10 hours.
D. Catching 10 different trophy-sized fish.
26. What’s the main goal of the FishMaryland award programme?
A. To develop the sport of fishing.
B. To show the state’s biodiversity.
C. To pick out successful fishers with awards.
D. To encourage locals to catch and eat fish.
27. What can we know about Lucy?
A. She is a gifted young fisher.
B. She is only interested in catching big fish.
C. She isn’t influenced by her father at all.
D. She doesn’t like doing something outdoors.

When we’re in trouble, we always turn to our parents for help. But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or in the lunch queue? Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸)of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realise just how important social networks are in their lives. This realisation has given many parents the motivation (动机)to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them. There’s also a certain amount of control over privacy (隐私)that we don't get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated (违背)when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to “refuse” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel we have something to hide. On the other hand if we do accept, then we could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way we did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their children overlook (忽略)their requests. When a teenager overlooks a parent's friend request it doesn’t necessarily mean that he is hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of his life where he wants to be independent.
Perhaps talking with parents and explaining would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friend list.
28. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. Parents have realised the importance of social networks.
B. Parents feel secure about their privacy online.
C. Social networks successfully fill the generation gap.
D. Social networks offer a chance for parents to communicate.
29. What may be the reason for teenagers to refuse a parent’s friend request?
A. Their parents make negative comments on them.
B. They hide something from their parents.
C. They are unwilling to be watched by parents.
D. Their parents tend to fall behind in technology.
30. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A Online life. B. The difficult choice.
C. Parents’ request. D. Teenagers’ refusal.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Privacy online. B. Parents’ friend requests.
C. The generation gap. D. Social networks.

Feeling joy is good for you and not just because you feel happy in the moment. You can keep a joy journal to save it up and use it again.
When you feel joyful you’re in a positive mood, which helps you to deal with challenges and solve problems. Chartered psychologist Suzy Reading, an expert in thoughts and feelings, says experiencing joy is good for your health. “It improves your immune (免疫的) system, protecting you from illness, and it reduces pain, worry and stress, helping you sleep.” The joy you feel doesn’t only benefit you, the people around you gain from it too because joy is contagious. Scientists have found that your joy can influence your family and friends and make them happy.
To record your joy, a joy journal is a special place. You can include whatever you like in it. Taking time to make a note of what’s giving you joy helps you focus on that experience and draw even more happiness from it. Suzy Reading explains, “By recording your joyful moments you can return to them whenever you need a little boost and relive them in the future.”
Choose a notebook and decorate the cover. It is up to you how often you add to it — perhaps every day after school or only at weekends. You can keep all your joyful things together or divide your journal into areas such as family, friends, school and hobbies. How do you best express yourself? You could write, draw, use colorful pens and stick things in.
Write lists of your favorite things: your favorite foods, perhaps, or TV shows or animals, and what you like about them. You can record a moment from each day that gave you joy: who was there, what happened, what you could see, hear and smell. This will help you feel the joy again and remember it more easily. You could make a joy journal with your family too, to record what makes you all happy.
32. What does the underlined word “contagious” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Nearly lost. B. Easily spread. C. Well protected. D. Badly damaged.
33. What is Suzy Reading’s attitude towards a joy journal?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Subjective. D. Concerned.
34. How can you best express your joy according to the text?
A. Write and draw what happened. B. Tell parents your favorite foods.
C. Take photos of the colorful pens. D. Stick things and post them online.
35. Which is probably the best title of the text?
A. The Importance of Getting Happy B. Spread Feelings to Your Family
C. The Ways of Lifting State D. Keep a Joy Journal

I started my dormitory life this year and met my roommate Kate. In the process of getting along, we found that we both enjoy reading and watching science fictions. With similar hobbies, our relationship immediately became closer. We went to class and canteen together every day in pairs.
Although we considered each other as the best friend, there were frictions in our life style. I was never very neat, while Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled everything. I always looked for everything.
Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other and never stopped trying to change the other person’s life style. Our friendship went ups and downs like a boat on the sea. Dissatisfaction with the other was accumulating.
War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I was rather irritated (激怒). How could she act like that? I could not control my temper either. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder. Neither of us was willing to calm down to be a good listener.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her dear grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled under her covers, burying her face. From where I stood, I saw her back slightly up and down. Obviously, she was sobbing. That was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.
Slowly I began to move.

27. What can we know about Lucy?

When a teenager overlooks a parent's friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he is hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of his life where he wants to be independent.
A. Online life. B. The difficult choice.
C. Parents’ request. D. Teenagers’ refusal.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Privacy online. B. Parents’ friend requests.
C. The generation gap. D. Social networks.
A 29. C 30. D 31. B
根据第二段中的“However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation (动机) to educate themselves about social networking sites. (然而,越来越多的父母开始意识到社交网络在他们生活中的重要性。这种认识给了许多父母学习社交网站的动力)”可知,父母已经意识到社交网络的重要性。故选A项。

根据画线词的上文“On the one hand we don’t want to “refuse” their request (一方面,我们不想“拒绝”他们的请求)”和下文“might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide (可能会伤害他们的感情,或者让他们觉得你有所隐瞒)”可推知,能让父母觉得感情被伤害,或孩子有所隐瞒的,应该是孩子拒绝他们的好友请求,因此that指代的是上文孩子的拒绝。故选D项。

B 33. B 34. A 35. D

根据画线词的上文“The joy you feel doesn’t only benefit you, the people around you gain from it (你感受到的快乐不仅对自己有益,周围的人也会受益)”和下文“Scientists have found that your joy can influence your family and friends and make them happy. (科学家发现,你的快乐能影响家人朋友,让他们也感到快乐)”可知,快乐能传递给他人,让他人受益,因此快乐是具有传染性的,画线词意思是“富有感染力的,会传播的”。故选B项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中Suzy Reading所说的话“By recording your joyful moments you can return to them whenever you need a little boost and relive them in the future. (通过记录那些让你快乐的瞬间,你便能在需要情绪提振时重温这些美好,在未来再次体验当时的幸福)”可知,Suzy Reading肯定快乐日记对情绪的积极作用,其态度是支持的。故选B项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“How do you best express yourself? You could write, draw, use colorful pens and stick things in. (怎样才是表达自己的最佳方式?你可以自由书写,随手涂鸦,用彩色笔绘制,或是把值得珍藏的小物件粘贴在里面)”可知,用文字和图画记录事件是表达快乐的最佳方式。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Feeling joy is good for you and not just because you feel happy in the moment. You can keep a joy journal to save it up and use it again.

前文“Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them? The good news is that almost everyone can improve their handwriting. (或许他们只是对自己的书写感到担忧。你是否也是其中之一?好消息是:几乎所有人都能提升自己的书写水平)”指出改善书写水平是可能的事,后文段落列出具体的五个步骤,此处需要承上启下的过渡句,引出具体步骤,因此F项“Here are five steps that really help you (以下是真正能帮助你的五个步骤)”符合语境,呼应短文标题,引出后文,其中的“five steps”在标题中有同词复现。故选F。
【37题详解】
前文“But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. (不过当你用正确的方式握笔时,书写会变得轻松许多)”指出正确握笔方式的好处,后文“Hold it in place with your thumb, and your index (食指) and middle fingers. (用拇指、食指和中指稳稳地固定住铅笔)”描述具体的握法,此处需补充正确握笔方式的说明,因此G项“The best way to hold a pencil is to rest it next to the base of your thumb (最佳握笔姿势是将铅笔靠近拇指根部放置)”符合语境,承接前文,和后文语义连贯,其中的“a pencil”是后文“it”的指代对象。故选G。
前文“Those lines can help you create letters that are of the right size and proportion (比例). (这些横线能帮助你写出大小比例恰到好处的字母)”指出线条能帮助控制字母大小和比例,后文“Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. (还要确保完全填满线条空间)”给出另一建议,提醒字母和线条空间的关系,此处需具体说明大小比例关系,因此C项“So “a” should be half the height of a capital “A” (因此小写字母“a”的高度应是大写字母“A”的一半)”符合语境,承接前文。故选C。
【39题详解】
本段标题“Lower the pressure (降低压力)”建议写字时避免过度用力,后文“That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. (这样会导致线条难以保持流畅)”指出某行为会导致线条不流畅,此处需点出该行为是过度用力,因此D项“Some kids press down really hard when they write (有些孩子写字时用力过猛)”符合语境,呼应标题,引出后文,选项内容是后文“That”指代的对象,其中的“really hard”和标题中的“the pressure”呼应。故选D。
【40题详解】
后文“Lots of games need you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not schoolwork, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pencil better.

She was watching in disbelief, her tears dried.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Slowly I began to move. Approaching Kate’s bed, I sat beside her, put my hand on her back and stroked her gently. “Don’t worry! Trust me! Everything will be fine.” On hearing my words, Kate stopped sobbing, her face still buried. So I continued, “I’m really sorry for being such a messy person and I’m sure there is something I can do right now.” With the words finished, I rose up, turned around, collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up.
She was watching in disbelief, her tears dried. Kate dashed towards me all of a sudden and gave me a tight hug, murmuring shyly, “I need to apologize too. I shouldn’t have yelled at you first. Are we still best friends?” I nodded. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She said “Thanks”, and we both burst out laughing happily at the same time. Two months later, there came the good news that Kate’s grandma had recovered. Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.
