By the time Nalin Kamat was 13, the Toronto teen had been well on his way to becoming a working artist. He had already had his first show at a local art center, showcasing his series titled “Dispositions”, which illustrated his own growth during adolescence.
Yet he wanted more — specifically to start showing his work in a juried exhibition, an exhibition with judges, where a group of art experts would evaluate and select pieces in a competitive review process. That’s when he hit an obstacle, discovering in the very last line of a multi-page application that the minimum age for submission was 18.
However, being refused became a motivation for creation. “I thought it’d be really cool if I could provide the opportunity to more young artists,” says Nalin, now 15. With the support of his parents, in January 2023, Nalin rented a storefront and founded Little EGG Gallery, which is now profitable enough to make ends meet by charging a small hanging fee for any displayed work. In turn, Little EGG helps promote young talent by showcasing their work.
Not long after opening, David Griffin, a professor and artist of Ontario College of Art and Design University, stepped into the gallery and met Nalin. Griffin considered him as someone special: “a strong young artist with a really excellent idea — creating a space for showing the natural genius of young people. It was a void (空白) in the art world.” There Nalin asked Griffin to help judge an upcoming competition. The first show with judges was last spring, and five-year-old Jack Gamble won for his abstract painting titled “Pokemon”.
As Nalin is busy with school, life and his own art, Little EGG is mostly open by appointment only, but he’s still committed to growing it with seasonal and themed shows scheduled a few times a year.
24. What do we know about Nalin?
A. He drew teenagers’ growth in his work.
B. He became a working artist when aged 13.
C. He was disqualified for a juried exhibition.
D. He showed his series at the capital art center.
25. Why did Nalin decide to set up Little EGG Gallery?
A. To promote artists by showcasing their works.
B. To form the association between different galleries.
C. To expand his own business through themed shows.
D. To show young artists’ talent by offering them a stage.
26. Which of the following can best describe Nalin’s idea of opening the gallery?
A. Unpromising. B. Short-lived.
C. Thought-provoking. D. Groundbreaking.
27. What kind of person is Nalin according to the text?
A. Helpful and cautious.
B. Devoted and creative.
C. Humorous and intelligent.
D. Knowledgeable and ambitious.
C 25. D 26. D 27. B
根据第一段中“He had already had his first show at a local art center, showcasing his series titled “Dispositions”, which illustrated his own growth during adolescence. (他已经在当地的一家艺术中心举办了第一次展览,展示了他题为《性格》的系列作品,该系列作品展示了他自己在青春期的成长。)”和第二段“Yet he wanted more — specifically to start showing his work in a juried exhibition, an exhibition with judges, where a group of art experts would evaluate and select pieces in a competitive review process. That’s when he hit an obstacle, discovering in the very last line of a multi-page application that the minimum age for submission was 18. (然而,他想要的更多——具体来说,是开始在一个评审展览中展示他的作品,在那里,一群艺术专家将在一个竞争性的评审过程中评估和选择作品。就在那时,他遇到了一个障碍,在一份多页申请表的最后一行发现提交作品的最低年龄是18岁。)”可知,纳林•卡马特因为年龄没有达到18岁而没有参加评审展览的资格。故选C。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的““I thought it’d be really cool if I could provide the opportunity to more young artists,” says Nalin, now 15. With the support of his parents, in January 2023, Nalin rented a storefront and founded Little EGG Gallery, which is now profitable enough to make ends meet by charging a small hanging fee for any displayed work. In turn, Little EGG helps promote young talent by showcasing their work. (“我想,如果我能为更多的年轻艺术家提供机会,那就太棒了,”现年15岁的纳林说。在父母的支持下,纳林于2023年1月租了一个店面,并创办了Little EGG Gallery,现在这家画廊通过向展示的作品收取小额展示费,已经足够盈利来维持生计了。)”可推知,纳林创办Little EGG Gallery是为了给年轻艺术家提供一个展示才华的舞台。故选D。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Griffin considered him as someone special: “a strong young artist with a really excellent idea — creating a space for showing the natural genius of young people. It was a void (空白) in the art world. ”(格里芬认为他是个特别的人:“一个很有想法的年轻艺术家——创造一个展示年轻人天赋的空间。这在艺术界是一个空白。”)”可推知,纳林的想法在艺术界是一个空白,所以是开创性的。故选D。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是倒数第二段中的“Not long after opening, David Griffin, a professor and artist of Ontario College of Art and Design University, stepped into the gallery and met Nalin. Griffin considered him as someone special: “a strong young artist with a really excellent idea — creating a space for showing the natural genius of young people. It was a void (空白) in the art world.

Researchers at MIT created a high-tech pill (药片) that starts to vibrate (震动) once it makes contact with liquid in the user’s stomach and make him or her feel full. The pill was reportedly thought up by Shriya Srinivasan, currently an assistant professor of bioengineering at Harvard University.
VIBES, short for Vibrating Ingestible Bio Electronic Stimulator, was only recently made public in a study published in the Science Journal, but it is already being announced by the media as the future of weight loss. Although it has yet to be tested on humans, trials on pigs have achieved very hopeful results. After about 30 minutes of VIBES activity, pigs ate on average almost 40 percent less food in the next half hour than they did without the smart pill. Apparently, the novel device works by activating stretch receptors in the stomach, modeling the presence of food. This in turn signals the brain to increase the levels of hormones (激素) that make us feel full. The vibrating stimulator, which is about the size of a vitamin pill, is powered by battery and activated either by the stomach liquid breaking down the coat around the pill, or by an incorporated timer. After producing the desired effect, the pill exits the body with other solid waste.
The good news is that it is expected to have a cost within dollar range, and researchers say that it may eventually be possible to implant the stimulator and thus remove the need for people to constantly take it.
“Our study demonstrates the effectiveness of a low-cost, non-operative intervention to reduce food intake and calorie burning. The device functions effectively in the stomach, leading to fullness,” said Giovanni Traverso, co-author of the study. “The device has the potential to overturn options for weight loss treatment. However, future studies will need to explore the physiological effects of the device before it’s available for patients.”
Researchers are now exploring ways to increase the producing of VIBES capsules, which could enable clinical trials in humans.
28. What is the outcome of taking the pill?
A. Food storage. B. Recovery of users.
C. Liquid production. D. Sensation of fullness.
29. Which aspect of the device is mentioned in paragraph 2?

Iowa has long been known as the heartland of farming in the U.S. But a changing climate and environment have created challenges for growing food here. Rising temperatures and more frequent droughts make it difficult for crops to retain water, and more extreme precipitation storms are eroding soil and depleting its health. However, family farmers here recognize that soil health and farm resilience are crucial in mitigating the worst effects of climate change.
Wendy Johnson co-manages her family’s nearby farm, Center View Farms Co., established by her grandfather and father. Center View Farms was already an early adopter of no-till farming. Tilling (耕作) the soil degrades soil health, displaces or kills the microbes that help make healthy soil, and contributes to erosion. Experts estimate that the planet loses billions of tons of fertile soil each year. In no-till farming, new seeds are planted directly into the residue of previous crops to minimize soil disturbance.
Since she moved back, Johnson has been working with Sarah Carlson of Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) to revolutionize the way her family farms. Through this program, PFI aims to build resilient farms by partnering with farmers to diversify crop rotations and plant cover crops—another way to keep living roots in the soil year-round. With support, Johnson planted her first cover crop—oats. The number of cover crop acres in Iowa has risen from fewer than 10,000 in 2009 to more than a million in 2022.
Johnson also attended the field days hosted by PFI that help connect farmers and enable them to learn from each other’s innovations. “I loved those field days and meeting other farmers,” she said. “The open-minded knowledge sharing was a total one-eighty from what I grew up with.”
Johnson started Jóia Food & Fiber Farm, a certified organic farm, as an incubator in agroecology (农业生态学) to test other climate-resilient and restorative practices. She raises heritage pigs, sheep, turkeys, guinea fowl, and chickens, and runs a small herd of cattle. She grows trees and shrubs that produce fruit and nuts, uses adaptive grazing management on pastures and grows small grains.
Like many family farmers in Iowa today, Johnson wants to be the best steward of the land that she can be. She knows it’s the key to sustainability for the next generations. “Food is life,” she said. “As long as we’re protecting the soil, we have an opportunity for a brighter, better future.”
32. What is the core measure for tackling the threat?
A. Applying innovative agricultural technologies.
B. Respecting market demands for farm products.
C. Implementing land and ecosystem conservation practices.
D. Maintaining persistent environmental monitoring efforts.
33. What is the primary purpose of no-till farming?
A. Accelerating soil degradation to prevent disturbance.
B. Preserving surface nutrition to reduce soil exposure.
C. Using soil's original structure to maintain fertility.
D. Making full use of fertile soil while crops growing.
34. What is the meaning of “a total one-eighty” in Paragraph 4?
A. the sessions significantly altered her childhood perspectives.
B. the method of sharing farming knowledge was totally changed.
C. she acquired much more agroecological knowledge than ever.
D. the problem of soil degradation was significantly solved.
35. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Practical Farmers of Iowa: Leading the U.S. Agricultural Innovation.
B. From Crisis to Hope: Iowa’s Soil-Centric Farming Revolution.
C. Wendy Johnson’s Farm: A Model for Organic Agroecology in America.
D. Climate Resilience in Farming: The Rise of Cover Crops in Iowa.

根据第一段中的“However, family farmers here recognize that soil health and farm resilience are crucial in mitigating the worst effects of climate change (然而,当地的家庭农户意识到,土壤健康和农场恢复力对于缓解气候变化的最坏影响至关重要)”,第二段提及的“In no-till farming, new seeds are planted directly into the residue of previous crops to minimize soil disturbance. (在免耕种植中,新种子会直接种植在前茬作物的残体中,以最大限度减少对土壤的扰动)”,第三段的“Through this program, PFI aims to build resilient farms by partnering with farmers to diversify crop rotations and plant cover crops—another way to keep living roots in the soil year-round. (通过该项目,爱荷华州实用农户协会(PFI)致力于与农户合作,通过实现作物轮作多样化和种植覆盖作物来打造具备恢复力的农场 —— 这也是一种能让土壤全年都保有活根系的方法。)”及第五段的“Johnson started Jóia Food & Fiber Farm, a certified organic farm, as an incubator in agroecology (农业生态学) to test other climate-resilient and restorative practices. (约翰逊创办了 Jóia Food & Fiber Farm—— 这是一家经过认证的有机农场,她将其作为农业生态学领域的试验基地,用以测试其他具备气候适应性与生态修复功能的农业实践方法。)”可知,应对气候威胁的核心措施是实施土地与生态系统保护实践。故选C项。

【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“Johnson also attended the field days hosted by PFI that help connect farmers and enable them to learn from each other’s innovations (约翰逊还参加了PFI举办的田间活动,这些活动帮助农户相互联系,让他们能从彼此的创新中学习)”及“The open-minded knowledge sharing was a total one-eighty from what I grew up with (这种开放的知识共享方式,和我成长过程中接触到的one-eighty)”可知,“a total one-eighty”字面意为“180度转变”,此处特指“农业知识的共享方式发生了彻底改变”。
B选项“From Crisis to Hope: Iowa’s Soil-Centric Farming Revolution (从危机到希望:爱荷华州以土壤为核心的农业革命)”为最佳标题。
Take a Thought Walk
Have you ever considered when you get your best ideas? Or what you’re doing when the solution to a problem pops into your head? ____36____ But it could also be doing something unrelated, like taking a shower or washing the dishes. The best ideas can land when you least expect them — but there are things you can do to help them along, and that’s where walking comes in. Even a quick walk can reduce stress, clarify thinking or give your creativity a boost. Here’s why you should put your best foot forward.
____37____ Michelle, a 21-year-old university student, discovered walking as a teen when she was going through a tough period of stress. “My mum loves walking, so it was her who first suggested I go out for a walk,” she remembers. “Within about 10 minutes it made me feel so much better.”
The benefit of walking goes beyond calming — it opens mental capacity. Gillian Mills, a high school teacher with 20 years of classroom experience, explains, “When students feel too stressed to think straight, we often suggest a walk outside. ____38____ Just picture stress like a balloon blowing up. It fills with air and pressure builds. Walking and taking big breaths of fresh air are like gently letting the pressure out...”
____39____ It holds partial focus, letting you notice your surroundings while your mind wanders in new directions. Whether you’re revising for an exam, feeling stuck on a school project or working through a friendship problem, going for a walk could help.
Stanford University confirms this effect. They found a clear link between walking and creative thinking. ____40____ This suggests that it increases what the experts call “divergent thinking” — the process where the mind generates a wide range of possible ideas or solutions to a problem.
A. It helps clear your head for new thoughts.
B. Many experts believe walking improves mental health.
C. Some people find their best ideas come when relaxing quietly.
D. Critically, walking occupies just enough attention, but not all.
E. Evidence for walking’s calming power comes from lived experience.
F. It might be sitting at your desk in school or working at a computer.
G. Participants in a study increased their brainstorming by 60% during/after walks.
F 37. E 38. A 39. D 40. G

由上文“Stanford University confirms this effect. They found a clear link between walking and creative thinking.(斯坦福大学证实了这一现象。他们发现步行与创造性思维之间存在着明确的关联)”和下文“This suggests that it increases what the experts call “divergent thinking” — the process where the mind generates a wide range of possible ideas or solutions to a problem.(这表明,它能够增强专家们所说的“发散性思维”——即大脑在处理问题时能够产生大量可能的想法或解决方案的过程)”可知,此处需具体说明散步对创造性思维的作用,选项G“在一项研究中,参与者在散步期间/之后的头脑风暴次数增加了60%”中的“brainstorming”与下文的“divergent thinking”(发散思维)同义,直接对应研究发现。故选G。

My View on Money and Success
Recently, the topic of whether wealth can measure a person’s success has sparked a heated debate among students. I firmly believe that the idea “The more money you get, the more successful you will be” is wrong.
Success is not merely about money. It also involves personal growth and the ability to bring positive changes to others. For example, many artists create great works that inspire people but may not earn a fortune. Their success lies in the impact they have on society, not the amount of money they possess.
In short money is just one aspect of life, and it can’t be the sole criterion for success.

In the heart of the busy city of New York, where the sounds of rushing cars never stopped, lived a sixteen-year-old girl named Lisa. Unlike her classmates, who were often keen on the latest technology, Lisa had a preference for knitting (编织).
Lisa’s love for knitting was deeply influenced by her mother, who owned a skilled and creative touch with needles. Her mother’s passion for knitting and generous spirit of helping others always inspired Lisa to follow in her footsteps and take up knitting as a meaningful hobby.
Lisa was really good at knitting. She liked to make scarves (围巾), gloves, hats and mini bags for her friends as well as her relatives. Her hats were created in a variety of styles and colors, each one unique and full of personality. Whether it was a mini bag or a classic scarf, each knitting work was a carefully crafted masterpiece and a unique gift full of love and warmth. With beauty and practicality, Lisa’s creations never failed to impress.
One freezing morning in the peak of winter, the city had just been blanketed by a snowstorm that had left many, particularly the homeless, in desperate situation. As Lisa made her way to school, she noticed a shaking figure under the bridge near her school. It was a homeless old man she often saw on her way, but today he looked extremely miserable (可怜的). His face was half-hidden under a piece of worn cloth that hardly served as protection against the cold. Touched by the sight. Lisa decided to give her scarf to the homeless old man. She approached, handing the scarf to him.
“For me?” the man asked, his eyes widened with surprise.
“Yes! I thought it might help you against the cold,” Lisa said, her breath visible in the cold air.

The old man wrapped the scarf, immediately feeling a bit warmer. His trembling fingers traced the intricate patterns, and tears welled up in his eyes. “Thank you, young lady,” he whispered hoarsely. “No one’s shown me kindness like this in years.” Lisa smiled, but her heart ached seeing his threadbare gloves. Suddenly, an idea struck her — what if she could knit for more people like him? That afternoon, she rushed home and rummaged through her yarn stash, determined to turn her hobby into something bigger.
Led by Lisa, Knitting Club was started in her school. At first, only a few curious classmates joined, but soon word spread about their mission to craft winter gear for the homeless. Lisa taught them basic stitches during lunch breaks, their needles clicking in unison. By December, they’d donated fifty handmade items to shelters. The local newspaper featured their story, inspiring other schools to follow suit. What began as one girl’s quiet act of compassion grew into a citywide movement, proving that even the smallest stitches could weave a warmer world.

Not long after opening David Griffin, a professor and artist of Ontario College of Art and Design University, stepped into the gallery and met Nalin.

“Our study demonstrates the effectiveness of a low-cost non-operative intervention to reduce food intake and calorie burning.
A. Its testing history. B. Its side effect. C. Its working principle. D. Its intelligence.
30. What is Giovanni Traverso’s attitude towards the future of the device?
A. Worried. B. Watchful. C. Doubtful. D. Confused.
31. What is the researchers’ ultimate goal of the device?
A. To fix it in human body. B. To destroy the coat around it.
C. To produce stomach liquid with it. D. To remove solid waste from it.

33 What is the primary purpose of no-till farming?
