In Brazil, despite the fact that English is part of the school curriculum (课程), most students only learn the basics and simply don’t have enough interest to go beyond that level. Like many Brazilian students, I paid little attention to English. That changed when I planned to study in the United States. Fortunately, my parents encouraged me to go further, so I registered for a private English course, and attended classes three times a week. After a few months, I could clearly see the improvement in my level of understanding.
Still, becoming fluent wasn’t easy. Learning a new language takes time and patience. It’s common to feel discouraged, especially when trying to speak. I often forgot words or couldn’t express myself clearly. At first, I was embarrassed, but I soon realized that making mistakes was part of the process. The real progress came when I stepped out of my comfort zone. Practice, even when it was difficult, helped me grow more confident.
Looking back, I believe motivation was the key factor in my improvement. At first, I studied English because it was expected. But when I decided to go abroad, I had a clear purpose in my mind. I knew that my success would depend on how well I could speak and understand English in the US. It pushed me to study harder, practice more, and never give up.
Motivation matters in everything we do, and language learning is no exception. Whether you want to travel, study overseas, meet new people, or improve your career chances, you need a reason that keeps you going. For me, studying in another country gave me that reason. It changed the way I saw English — from a school subject to a life skill.
Learning a language isn’t always easy, but with strong motivation, progress will come. Keep going, and one day, you’ll see how far you’ve come.
4. Why did the author start taking English seriously?
A. He wanted to become an English teacher.

D. English was required for high school graduation.
5. How did the author achieve fluency eventually?
A. By grasping basic skills. B. By correcting mistakes timely.
C. By attending formal training regularly. D. By facing difficulties bravely.
6. What motivated the author to stick to practicing English?
A. His desire for perfection. B. His interest in wider culture.
C. The clear learning goal. D. The academic requirements.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. My Journey of English Learning B. A Guide to Mastering Language
C. The Importance of Studying Abroad D. My Learning Struggles in Brazil
C
Psychological avoidance (心理回避) or avoiding emotions, a common way to get away from painful and uncomfortable thoughts, feelings or situations, can harm the emotional health and personal growth of high school freshmen. Actually, psychological avoidance can lead to increased levels of anxiety and stress. Avoiding fears and worries only allows them to grow stronger.
By avoiding challenging situations, it prevents students from developing important skills, limiting their opportunities for self-discovery and improvement. The famous author J. K. Rowling once said, “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so carefully that you might as well not have lived at all.”
Psychological avoidance directly affects how well students do in their studies. Freshmen who turn to avoidance will always procrastinate, or even miss deadlines (最后期限). By avoiding the necessary efforts and tasks required for learning, students may struggle to gain information, reducing the opportunity to succeed in grades.
Psychological avoidance can also cause stress or discomfort to relationships. High school students may avoid discussing their feelings with friends or family members, leading to misunderstandings and a breakdown in communication. Instead of dealing with their emotions, they hold back or hide themselves. Students miss out on the chance to deepen their connections with friends, family and peers, making it harder for them to form healthy relationships.
Psychological avoidance may provide comfort for a short period, but in the long run it can have negative influences on our mental health, personal growth, school performance, relationships and other aspects of life. Breaking free from avoidance behaviors is important for school success and self-confidence, and recognizing the harmful effects of avoidance is the first step.
8. J. K. Rowling might agree that by avoiding challenging situations, ______.
A. we can discover our deep thoughts and feelings B. we miss out on valuable learning experiences
C. we can avoid failing at something more easily D. we have opportunities to avoid fears and worries
9. What does the underlined word “procrastinate” in Paragraph 3probably mean?
A. Focus on others. B. Get away from reality.
C. Miss out on chances. D. Put off tasks.
10. How does psychological avoidance affect students’ ability to form healthy relationships?
A. It fully stops their connections with others. B. It leads to difficult discussions with strangers.
C. It easily makes them fail to make new friends. D. It causes them to avoid further communication.
11. What will the following paragraph probably talk about?
A. The harmful effects of psychological avoidance.
B. The forms of psychological avoidance behaviors.
C. The strategies of overcoming psychological avoidance.
D. The difficulty of breaking free from avoidance behaviors.
D
A good many facts show that it is more difficult to learn a new language as an adult than as a child, which has led scientists to think that there is a “critical (关键的) period” for language learning. However, the length of this period and its main causes remain unknown.
A new study performed at MIT suggests that children remain very skilled at learning the grammar of a new language much longer than expected — up to the age of 17 or 18. However, the study also found that it is nearly impossible for people to achieve fluency similar to that of a native (本地) speaker unless they start learning a language by the age of 10.
“If you want to have native-like knowledge of English grammar, you should start by about 10 years old. We don’t see very much difference between people who start at birth and people who start at 10, but we start seeing a going down after that,” says Joshua Hartshorne, an assistant professor of psychology at Boston College, who made this study as a postdoc at MIT.
People who start learning a language between 10 and 18 will still learn quickly, but since they have a shorter window before their learning ability goes down, they do not achieve the fluency of native speakers, the researchers found. The findings are based on an analysis of a grammar quiz taken by nearly 670,000 people, which is by far the largest data set that anyone has collected for a study of language-learning ability.
“It’s been very difficult until now to get all the data you would need to answer this question of how long the critical period lasts,” says Josh Tenenbaum, an MIT professor of brain science and an author of the paper. “But this is one of those hard-to-get opportunities in science where we could work on a question that is very old, that many smart people have thought about and written about, and take a new angle to see something that maybe other people haven’t.”
12. What is the best way for a child to sound like a native English speaker?
A. Starting learning before 10 years old. B. Learning English for at least 10 years.
C. Paying more attention to the grammar. D. Studying with the help of a native speaker.
13. Why does the author mention the grammar quiz in Paragraph 4?
A. To introduce the largest data set. B. To stress the importance of grammar.
C. To show the truth of the findings. D. To explain the popularity of English.
14. How does Josh Tenenbaum feel about taking part in the study?
A. Worried. B. Lucky. C. Bored. D. Confident.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain why children are better at learning languages than adults.
B. To introduce a new study on the important period for language learning.
C. To discuss the importance of words and grammar in language learning.
D. To compare the language learning abilities of people of different ages.

I still remember the first day when I entered high school. Everywhere on the campus I could smell excitement in the fresh air, yet a thread of nervousness wound through my stomach. As I walked through the campus road, I gazed up at the towering buildings and the busy students, knowing that a new chapter of my school life was about to unfold.
In my first math class, I quickly realized it was going to be far harder than what I was used to. The teacher talked so fast, and the mountain of homework was too much, making it hard for me to breathe. I tried to pay attention, but my mind was racing. I started to doubt myself, wondering if I could really handle high school life. I felt I could hardly follow anything. I felt lost.
After the class, I sat at my desk, feeling like I was in over my head. That’s when Mr. Smith, my math teacher, came over. He saw I was upset and asked if I was okay. I told him I was finding everything really hard and wasn’t sure I could handle it.
Mr. Smith’s eyes softened as he smiled, and he said in a comforting tone, “I understand how you feel. High school is a significant leap from junior high, but it’s also an opportunity for you to grow. Everyone struggles at first. The important thing is not to give up.” He spent some time going over the math stuff I didn’t understand.
His words made me feel a little better, and I listened closely as he explained everything again. By the end of our talk, I felt a bit more hopeful about the rest of the day and the year ahead.

11. What will the following paragraph probably talk about?
A. The harmful effects of psychological avoidance.

D. The difficulty of breaking free from avoidance behaviors.

推理判断题。根据第二段中“By avoiding challenging situations, it prevents students from developing important skills, limiting their opportunities for self-discovery and improvement. The famous author J. K. Rowling once said, “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so carefully that you might as well not have lived at all.”(逃避挑战性情境会阻碍学生培养关键能力,限制他们自我探索与提升的机会。著名作家J.K.罗琳曾经说过:“人生不可能从不失败,除非你活得如此谨小慎微,那还不如从未活过。”)”可知,J.K.罗琳认为人生不可能从不失败,回避挑战,学生将无法发展重要技能,也失去了自我发现和提升的机会,即错过了宝贵的学习经历。故选B项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“or even miss deadlines (最后期限). (甚至错过最后期限)”可推知,此处描述的是回避挑战的学生的负面行为模式,即总是拖延任务,甚至导致错过最后期限。故划线词的意思是“推迟任务”,与D项“Put off tasks.”意思相近。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“High school students may avoid discussing their feelings with friends or family members, leading to misunderstandings and a breakdown in communication. 【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Breaking free from avoidance behaviors is important for school success and self-confidence, and recognizing the harmful effects of avoidance is the first step.(对在学校的成功和自信心很重要”或“对学业成功和自信心很重要,认识到回避的危害是第一步)”可知,文章最后提到摆脱回避行为的第一步,由此推知,后文会介绍更多克服心理回避的策略。故选C项。

However, the study also found that it is nearly impossible for people to achieve fluency similar to that of a native (本地的) speaker unless they start learning a language by the age of 10.
A. Worried. B. Lucky. C. Bored. D. Confident.
15 What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain why children are better at learning languages than adults.
B. To introduce a new study on the important period for language learning.
C. To discuss the importance of words and grammar in language learning.
D. To compare the language learning abilities of people of different ages.

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“The findings are based on an analysis of a grammar quiz taken by nearly 670,000 people, which is by far the largest data set that anyone has collected for a study of language-learning ability.(研究结果基于对近67万人参加的语法测验的分析,这是迄今为止所有人为研究语言学习能力收集的最大数据集)”可推知,作者在第四段中提到语法测验,介绍它是迄今为止所有人为研究语言学习能力收集的最大数据集,是为了证实研究发现的真实性。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中Josh Tenenbaum说的话“But this is one of those hard-to-get opportunities in science where we could work on a question that is very old, that many smart people have thought about and written about, and take a new angle to see something that maybe other people haven’t.(但这正是科学研究中难得的机遇——我们能够探索这个历史悠久、曾被无数智者思考与论述过的问题,并从一个全新的角度去看前人可能未曾窥见的奥秘)”可推知,Josh Tenenbaum认为这是科学研究中难得的机遇,所以参与这项研究是幸运的。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,结合第一段中“A good many facts show that it is more difficult to learn a new language as an adult than as a child, which has led scientists to think that there is a “critical (关键的) period” for language learning.(许多事实表明,成年人学习新语言比儿童更为困难,这使得科学家认为语言学习存在一个“关键期”)”和第二段“A new study performed at MIT suggests that children remain very skilled at learning the grammar of a new language much longer than expected — up to the age of 17 or 18. However, the study also found that it is nearly impossible for people to achieve fluency similar to that of a native (本地的) speaker unless they start learning a language by the age of 10.(麻省理工学院的一项新研究表明,儿童掌握新语言语法的能力可以持续到17或18岁,远超此前预期。但研究同时指出,若想在流利度上达到母语者水平,则需在10岁之前开始学习该语言)”可推知,本文主要是介绍了一项关于语言学习关键期的新研究。故选B项。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As the weeks passed, I noticed that I was making progress.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
After that day, I made up my mind to face the challenges. Regarding my studies, I developed a comprehensive plan. For math, I dedicated extra hours every day to practicing problems and seeking help from teachers and classmates. I also applied the same determination to other subjects. In English, I started reading English novels and watching English movies to improve my language sense. In physics, I did more experiments to better understand the theories. I told myself that every subject was a mountain to climb, and I was ready to scale them all.
As the weeks passed, I noticed that I was making progress. Math was no longer the insurmountable hurdle it once was. I could follow the teacher’s pace in class and solve complex problems independently. In English, I could communicate more fluently and write better essays. My physics grades also soared as I grasped the concepts more thoroughly. These achievements not only brought me joy but also strengthened my belief that hard work pays off. I was deeply thankful to Mr. Smith. His words of encouragement had lit a fire within me, inspiring me to keep striving forward in this new stage of my life.
