We sat at a riverside restaurant on the Willamette River, enjoying spaghetti and watching Christmas boats pass. “Isn’t this the best evening ever?” I said, grasping my husband’s hand. We seldom ate out, and the sight of the festive boats added a touch of magic.
Smiling and chatting, we stretched the dinner out to nearly two hours, ending it with shared chocolate cake. I almost danced to get my coat — a black wool one given to me by my daughter.
I reached for the only black coat on the rack (架子) and put it on. Wait, what? It reached below my ankle, not my knee. And I guessed it to be a size 16, not my 8. Blinking back tears, I left my number with the hostess, sure the mix-up would soon be corrected. But no call came that night, nor the next day. Heartick, I hung the too big coat in the closet, still waiting.
Months later, another freezing night, my husband and I were getting ready to go to friends for dinner. I pulled the coat off its hanger, pursing my lips about my lost coat.
“Wow” Penny, an old friend, exclaimed as soon as we walked in. “Very classic,” said Missy, the hostess. I arched am eyebrow. “You’re kidding. It’s four sizes too big.” I nearly launched into the whole story, but their words stopped me. For the first time I looked at the coat more carefully and noticed the fine label. I frowned. Did I need an attitude adjustment? What if I was positive instead of negative about my unplanned acquisition?
Instead of complaining, I asked myself what I needed to do with this coat in order to enjoy it. I had it altered by a woman from church free of charge. The following week, the temperature dropped sharply. As I gathered this altered coat to step into the car, I recalled the coat my daughter gave me, but this one was nearly as warm — and, as Missy said, a classic. Now I wear it with pleasure.

C
Buildings and construction contribute to over 37% of global carbon emissions (排放), which include both operational emissions (from heating, cooling, and lighting) and embodied carbon (from building materials and construction activities). Retrofitting existing buildings —especially deep retrofits — can significantly cut these emissions while also improving health, comfort, and reducing long-term energy costs for residents.
Environmental scientist Diana Ürge-Vorsatz emphasizes that deep retrofits reduce heating and cooling energy use by 80-90%. Unlike minor upgrades, such as replacing windows or doors, deep retrofits involve a complete redesign of insulation, windows, air sealing, and ventilation systems. This “whole-building” approach treats the structure as an integrated system. Research shows that, in addition to saving energy, deep retrofits lead to cleaner indoor air, fewer allergens, and lower rates of respiratory illness.
To meet international climate targets, the European Union aims to cut building-related emissions sharply by 2050. Ürge-Vorsatz argues that strong funding is essential since the costs are too high for most individuals. She recommends using funds from fossil fuels to support energy-efficient upgrades. Reducing unnecessary new construction — especially of luxury homes — and reusing existing buildings are also crucial strategies.
Another key focus is using biobased insulation materials, made from fast-growing plants such as hemp, straw, or even seaweed like Posidonia, which not only reduce dependence on fossil fuels but also have the potential to store carbon and release fewer toxins (毒素). However, their supply is limited, and harvesting them sustainably causes challenges.
To better understand the environmental impacts of building materials, Ürge-Vorsatz and her team use life cycle assessments, which evaluate the total impact of materials from production to end-of-life. Though complex, these tools help builders and policymakers make informed choices. Ürge-Vorsatz concludes that deep retrofits combined with sustainable materials are never optional. “Will we manage it? That’s not the question,” she says. “We have to. The future is always in our hands.”
8. What does “deep retrofit” mainly involve?
A. Construction of new homes. B. Addition of decorative materials.
C. Window and door replacement. D. Energy saving and system upgrade.
9. What probably makes for the realization of “deep retrofits”?
A. Bringing in investment. B. Constructing luxury houses.
C. Avoiding existing buildings. D. Using fossil fuels efficiently.
10. What is the main difficulty of using biobased materials?
A. Heavy toxicity. B. Fast growth.
C. Unstable sourcing. D. Carbon storage.
11. What does Ürge-Vorsatz imply in the last paragraph?
A. Life cycle assessments are simple tools.
B. Deep retrofits should be put into practice.
C. Life cycle assessments require wise choices.
D. Deep retrofits will encounter many difficulties.
D 9. A 10. C 11. B

D
As human species, our big brains and flexible hands have always made us feel special. However, in a study published in the journal Communications Biology, researchers investigated nearly 100 primate species including monkeys, apes and humans and revealed that the creatures with longer thumbs (拇指) usually had larger brains.
The researchers assumed that our ancestors first evolved (进化) hand flexibility, which then promoted the development of a larger brain. For instance, as primates’ control of objects improved, their brains would have had to become bigger to use these abilities, Joanna Baker, lead author of the study said. “Ultimately, though, the two needed to go hand in hand,” she adds.
While Baker and her colleagues predicted that longer thumbs would be tied to growth of the cerebellum — the part of the brain that influences movement and coordination (协调), the team was surprised to find that they are actually associated with the neocortex, a large region involved in cognition and sensory information. This suggests that longer thumbs are “linked to thinking, not movement.” Later, they tested the idea that the evolution of longer thumbs is associated with tool use, but they didn’t find any correlation.
Ultimately, “we’ve always known that our big brains and sharp fingers set us apart, but now we can see they didn’t evolve separately,” Baker says. The study suggests our species is not quite as unique as we once thought, and it also represents the first direct evidence that brain evolution and hand flexibility are associated throughout the primate family tree.
Fotios Alexandros Karakostis a biological anthropologist who was not involved in the study, comments that the research indicates that adaptations to the brain and hand likely evolved together. However, he notes that the brain size and thumb length cannot take only credit for the brain evolution or high level of hand coordination.
12. What was the assumption of the researchers according to paragraph 2?
A. Brain evolution determined hand size. B. Bigger brains made humans intelligent.
C. Object control was easy for ancestors. D. Hand flexibility drove brain development.
13. Why does the author mention “tool use” in paragraph 3?
A. To make a prediction. B. To clarify a concept.
C. To present a different view. D. To offer supporting evidence.
14. What is Karakostis’ attitude towards the research?
A. Favourable. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The bigger the brain, the longer the thumb.
B. Big brains and sharp fingers set humans apart.
C. Primate brains and thumbs evolve together.
D. Evolution mainly depends on brains and hands.
D 13. D 14. B 15. C

根据第三段“While Baker and her colleagues predicted that longer thumbs would be tied to growth of the cerebellum — the part of the brain that influences movement and coordination (协调), the team was surprised to find that they are actually associated with the neocortex, a large region involved in cognition and sensory information. This suggests that longer thumbs are “linked to thinking, not movement.” Later, they tested the idea that the evolution of longer thumbs is associated with tool use, but they didn’t find any correlation.(虽然Baker和她的同事预测,较长的拇指与小脑(影响运动和协调的大脑部分)的生长有关,但研究小组惊讶地发现,它们实际上与新皮层有关,新皮层是一个参与认知和感觉信息的巨大区域。这表明,较长的拇指与“思维有关,而不是运动”。后来,他们测试了拇指较长进化与工具使用有关的观点,但没有发现任何相关性。)”可知,作者提到“工具使用”强化了前文得出的核心结论——“较长拇指与思考相关,而非运动相关”,为此结论提供了支撑证据。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Fotios Alexandros Karakostis... comments that the research indicates that adaptations to the brain and hand likely evolved together. However, he notes that the brain size and thumb length cannot take only credit for the brain evolution or high level of hand coordination.(未参与该研究的生物人类学家福提奥斯・亚历山德罗斯・卡拉科斯蒂斯评论称,这项研究表明大脑和手部的适应性可能是共同进化的。然而,他指出,大脑大小和拇指长度不能单独被视为大脑进化或高水平手部协调能力的唯一原因。)”可知,卡拉科斯蒂斯既肯定了研究的结论(大脑和手部共同进化),又指出了研究结论的局限性(并非唯一原因),态度客观,故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“However, in a study published in the journal Communications Biology, researchers investigated nearly 100 primate species including monkeys, apes and humans and revealed that the creatures with longer thumbs (拇指) usually had larger brains.(然而,在《通讯生物学》杂志上发表的一项研究中,研究人员调查了近100种灵长类动物,包括猴子、猿和人类,发现拇指较长的生物通常大脑更大。)”以及最后一段中的“Fotios Alexandros Karakostis, a biological anthropologist who was not involved in the study, comments that the research indicates that adaptations to the brain and hand likely evolved together.(没有参与这项研究的生物人类学家Fotios Alexandros Karakostis评论说,这项研究表明,大脑和手的适应性可能是一起进化的。)”

It is true that some folks are naturally more patient than others. But patience is not necessarily a born quality. ____16____ Here are some tips on how to be more patient in your everyday life.
Redefine what patience actually means.
If your idea of patience looks like being endlessly agreeable, never getting annoyed, and staying calm through any inconvenience, no wonder you feel it is impossible to be patient. ____17____ Let it happen without destroying your mood.
____18____
A big reason why we get so upset when life does not go our way is that we are holding onto a bunch of unspoken “shoulds”. At its core, impatience often comes from “main character energy, ” — you stay focused on living your life. ____19____ They may be dealing with their own delays, changes, and priorities too. So practice acceptance, and then build empathy (共情). Before losing your temper, try pausing to consider what else might be going on first.
Slow down your life with your physical movements.
When everything is seemingly urgent or overwhelming, slowing down seems like the last thing you would want to do. But rushing around only makes you more annoyed, restless, and anxious. On the contrary, when you physically slow down, your brain tends to follow. Even just taking more time to take a few deep breaths can do wonders in gradually building patience. ____20____
A. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes.
B. Change your own attitude towards others.
C. In fact, it is something that you can work on.
D. It makes sense to control yourself and be patient.
E. Plus, when you are stuck in frustration, it is hard to consider others.
F. Patience is about learning to let go of the need to control everything.
G. That is how you begin to think more clearly and handle whatever is testing your patience.
C 17. F 18. A 19. E 20. G

故填What。
故填invaluable/valuable。
由句意及空前“move the message book from the service desk”以及空后“a corner of the stairwell for the library”可知,此处为move sth from...to...“将某物从……移到……”,to为介词。故填to。
sit在when引导的时间状语从句中作谓语动词,主句“readers might have hesitated to write for fear of ____5____ (watch) and losing their privacy”表示对过去留言簿放在服务台时会发生的情况的推测,从句描述的是过去发生的事情,应用一般过去时。
此处为固定搭配be afraid of (doing) sth,表示“害怕(做)某事”,主语readers和动词watch之间构成逻辑上的被动关系,用动名词的被动语态being watched作介词of宾语。故填being watched。

故填is provided。
故填an。
故填but。

With every step, my legs trembled like a newborn calf’s, exhausted from scrambling up the rocks. My mind was filled with self-doubt — I was too overweight, too weak, and a total fool for attempting this struggle. After climbing only one hour, I felt worn out, physically and mentally, and wanted to turn back.
I told the guide staying with me at the back that I couldn’t go any further. His words were simple but struck a chord, “That doesn’t sound like you. Keep going. You can do it.” I don’t know why, but something in his tone made me turn around. With renewed resolve, I placed one foot slowly in front of the other.
By the time I reached the first rest point, most fellow climbers had already left. I hurried to drink and eat, anxious not to fall further behind. Sitting alone on a cold rock in the darkness, a deep wave of disappointment washed over me. Nine months earlier, I had promised to change my life and prove anything was possible. But here, at 2 a.m., after three hours of climbing, I felt I had completely overestimated myself.
This thought sparked a familiar anger, one that had once ruled my life. But now, instead of letting it consume me, I would let it fuel me. This wasn’t just a climb between the mountain and me but also a proof of my rebirth. Suddenly I stood up, looked at the guide and said, “I’ll keep going.” Though doubt flashed in his eyes, my resolution was absolute.
That was when my tears started. I cried not only from exhaustion but from the weight of my promise and the pressure. I hid my face under my hood (兜帽) and snood (围脖) and pushed on. I stumbled and fell countless times tears freezing on my cheeks. For the next few hours, I climbed over snow-covered rocks, laughing bitterly at the absurd struggle and endlessly repeating to myself: just one more step.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Around 6:00 a.m., I saw some climbers heading back down.

It took nine hours instead of the expected six, but I made it.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Around 6:00 a.m., I saw some climbers heading back down. They shook their heads when passing me, saying the top was still far and the wind was getting stronger. My legs screamed to stop, but the promise I made to myself echoed in my mind. I tightened my hood, gripped the rock harder, and kept moving. The faint glow of sunrise soon painted the sky pink—this small light felt like a gift, pushing me to take just one more step.
It took nine hours instead of the expected six, but I made it. When I finally stood at the top, the view of rolling clouds below took my breath away. Tears of joy mixed with the cold wind. I didn’t just climb a mountain; I proved I could keep going even when everything felt impossible. That day, I realized rebirth isn’t about being perfect—it’s about refusing to give up.

Community Science
Learn about community science programs and events in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area & Mt. Tam.
About Our Community Science Programs
The Parks Conservancy’s community science programs combine landscape-scale science with community engagement. Community members participate in large-scale studies to list and monitor species and ecosystems in the parks, helping to fill gaps in our knowledge about our local environment. These programs are also an opportunity for volunteers to learn new skills and to connect to local public lands through participation in science.
Programs include:
*Golden Gate Raptor Observatory — a program of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy in cooperation with the National Park Service to inspire the preservation of California raptor populations.
*Marin Wildlife Watch — a mountain wide study using motion-activated cameras to monitor mammal populations.
*Tamalpais Bee Lab — an inventory of wild bees on public lands throughout Marin County.
*California Giant Salamander Inventory — documenting this mysterious species’ population through crowd-sourced data.
All the work is done in partnership with our agency partners, academic institutions, and nonprofit conservation organizations. When you participate in one of our programs, you get to learn new skills and contribute to these important bodies of knowledge about the world.

4. What can be inferred about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A. She valued the family time. B. She led a luxurious lifestyle.

5. How did she feel when she found the coat mix-up?
A. Angry and regretful. B. Calm and grateful.
C. Depressed but hopeful. D. Confused but unconcerned.
6. What mainly led to her decision to have the coat adjusted?
A The advice from her friends. B. The reflection deep in her heart.
C. The free service from a woman. D. The dramatic drop of temperature.
7. What does she intend to convey through the story?
A. Don’t cry over spilt milk. B. Never judge a book by its cover.
C. God helps those who help themselves. D. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Fotios Alexandros Karakostis, a biological anthropologist who was not involved in the study, comments that the research indicates that adaptations to the brain and hand likely evolved together.

I stumbled and fell countless times, tears freezing on my cheeks. For the next few hours, I climbed over snow-covered rocks, laughing bitterly at the absurd struggle and endlessly repeating to myself: just one more step.
