It was the final race of the season, the 800 meters, and my legs felt like lead. The hot sun beat down on the track, and the roar of the crowd seemed distant. I had trained hard all summer, but now, facing my toughest competitor, Sarah Chen, doubt crept in. She always seemed to have an extra burst of speed at the end.
The starting gun fired. We surged forward, a pack of brightly colored jerseys. The first lap felt surprisingly smooth, but as we rounded the curve into the second lap, the familiar burn started in my lungs. Sarah pulled slightly ahead. “Just keep her in sight,” I told myself, remembering Coach’s words: “Run your own race.”
With 200 meters to go, the gap between Sarah and me widened. My legs screamed to slow down, and negative thoughts flooded my mind: “You can’t catch her. Second place is okay.” I glanced at the stands and saw my teammates waving wildly, their faces full of encouragement. Then, Coach’s voice cut through the noise: “Kick NOW, Mia! Everything you’ve got!”
Something clicked. It wasn’t just about winning against Sarah anymore; it was about pushing myself to my absolute limit, about honoring all those hours of practice. I dug deep, deeper than I ever had before. My arms pumped harder, my stride lengthened, and I focused solely on the finish line ribbon. The pain was intense, but it was pushed aside by sheer determination.
The last few meters were a blur. I threw myself forward. As I crossed the line, breathless and wobbly, I had no idea who had won. Then I heard the announcement: “First place ... Mia Johnson!” A wave of disbelief and pure joy washed over me. Sarah finished a split-second later, offering a tired but genuine smile and a handshake. “Great kick,” she said, breathing heavily. That moment of mutual respect meant almost as much as the medal.
That race taught me more than just how to run faster. It taught me that your biggest competitor is often yourself — the voice that says you can’t. And that finding the strength to silence that voice, even for just the final stretch, can lead to achievements you never thought possible.
4. How did Mia feel at the beginning of the race?
A. Confident and energetic. B. Focused solely on beating Sarah.
C. Excited by the crowd’s noise. D. Doubtful and physically heavy.
5. When the coach shouts “Kick NOW, Mia”, the word “kick” most probably means ________.
A. to ignore pain and continue moving B. to strike the ground with one’s foot
C. to suddenly increase running speed D. to focus on proper running form
6. What is the symbolic meaning of Sarah offering Mia a handshake after the race?
A. It reflects the universal sportsmanship spirit.
B. It helps to cover Sarah’s disappointment in losing the race.
C. It highlights Mia’s physical superiority.
D. It indicates Sarah’s pity for Mia’s effort.
7. What does Mia realize is the most important thing she learned from the race?
A. Winning against a strong competitor is the ultimate goal.
B. Following Coach’s instructions is crucial for success.
C. Her biggest challenge is overcoming her own self-doubt.
D. Physical pain is temporary, but medals last forever.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. C

Walking through an airport is never easy. Now imagine doing it if you were blind. That’s the problem faced by Chieko Asakawa, a computer scientist and IBM researcher. Asakawa often flies between the US and Japan, making the journey monthly. If traveling alone she has to be helped at both ends of the flight, which sometimes includes endless waiting. Searching for a better replacement led Asakawa to invent a high-tech suitcase that helps get her to the place she wants to go safely.
“I never relax when I travel alone,” she says, “I always think about what technology will help me travel more easily, quickly and comfortably.” It was this restlessness that led to the AI suitcase.
The idea has been in development since 2017 through research between IBM, other Japanese companies, and Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania. Asakawa says there are hopes to commercialize the suitcase and a pilot scheme (试验计划) is planned to use it in an airport, a shopping mall and other public spaces. “Though the suitcase is too full of tech to hold any clothes, that could change in the future,” she says.
A runner, Asakawa, held Olympic dreams as a child, but a swimming accident at the age of 11 caused her to gradually lose her sight until, aged 14, she became totally blind. As a grown-up she has paid attention to developing accessibility technology. Among her creations is “aDesigner”, whose aim is to make designers’ websites more user-friendly, and “IBM Home Page Reader”, the first voice browser to allow Internet access for blind people. Asakawa has won industry and government awards and been introduced into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame.
“The blind people usually use a white cane (手杖) or a guide dog. It will open up many doors for blind people, because we’d be able to go anywhere by ourselves. Without new technology, we cannot make our society more inclusive (包容的),” Asakawa says. “A smart suitcase is a great showcase for how AI and technology can change the lives of the blind.”
8. What drove Asakawa to invent the suitcase?
A. The suggestion from an international airport.
B. The wish to finish her trip without any help.
C. The huge business advantages of the suitcase.
D. The experience of keeping the blind company.
9. What do we learn about the suitcase?
A. It can hold clothes. B. It has yet to be widely used.
C. It has proved unhelpful for the blind. D. It is ready to be commercially produced.
10. What does Asakawa think of the suitcase?
A. It will encourage more scientists to help the blind.
B. It will make the public care for the blind more.
C. It will hugely free up the blind’s movements.
D. It will change people’s way of traveling.
11. What is the best title for this text?
A. Technology Is Changing People’s Lives
B. A Robot Suitcase Makes Traveling Popular
C. Traveling Alone Requires Courage for the Blind
D. A Smart Suitcase Is to Replace Cane for the Blind
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. D

Humans have a long history of digging wells, but we’re not the only species to tap the earth for water: New research reveals that wild horses and donkeys in the US can do so as well.
As described in a paper, the equine (马科的) animals use their hooves to dig more than six feet deep to reach groundwater for themselves, in turn creating oases (绿洲) that benefit other wildlife.
Horses and donkeys, introduced into the wild over the centuries, have taken up residence throughout much of the American West. The wells they dig transform into “hotbeds of animal activity”, according to Erick Lundgren, a researcher from Denmark and the study’s first author.
Over the course of three summers, researchers set up camera traps to observe wildlife at several sites in the desert, all in seasonal riverbeds. Horses and donkeys frequented and dug wells at these locations. Both species are capable diggers that move sand and small rocks backward mainly with their front hooves. The researchers found that a total of 57 species came to these equine-created wells to drink.
They also set up cameras at nearby spots without wells to serve as scientific controls and determine the influence of the wells in attracting wildlife. The species richness observed at these wells was 64 percent higher than at the control sites, suggesting the animals intentionally visited the equine-made wells. The researchers also mapped open-water sources in the areas surrounding their study sites and found that the well-digging equines increased accessible surface water density (密度) by up to 14 times.
They also found willows and cottonwoods rooting at some wells suggesting these spots could serve as nurseries for these declining desert trees.
Wild horses and donkeys’ behaviour fits the definition of “ecosystem engineering”, a phenomenon through which wild animals alter their environment. Ecologist Michael Bogan, who was not involved in the study, suspects the behaviour is widespread in deserts with loose sand or small rocks, where water is buried at a relatively shallow level.
Over 10,000 years ago, North America was home to several equine species, which later became extinct. Today’s wild horses and donkeys, which are not strictly native, might be performing the ecological roles that these ancient animals once played. Even though they are introduced, they perform crucial ecological functions.
12. What may be the focus of the new paper?
A. The evolution of horses and donkeys in America.
B. Various methods that wild animals use to dig wells.
C. How introduced animals affect America’s desert ecosystems.
D. How some equine animals dig wells that benefit other wildlife.
13. Why are equine-made wells called “hotbeds of animal activity”?
A. They attract various species to water.
B. They are dangerous areas for smaller animals.
C. They are key locations for animal competition.
D. They are comfortable places for animals to rest.
14. What was the purpose of setting up cameras at spots without wells?
A. To map water density in desert areas.
B. To study the digging habits of equine animals.
C. To observe how plants grow near water sources.
D. To compare wildlife activity with and without wells.
15. What conclusion can be drawn about modern wild horses and donkeys in the American West?
A. They are an essential part of the desert ecosystem.
B. They learn to dig wells from some native equine species.
C. They are the primary cause of desert tree population decline.
D. They were once harmful invasive species disrupting the ecosystem.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. D 15. A

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Every time we went to Lehman’s store, I would rush straight to the same shelf. There it was: a brown little guy with a large nose that fit perfectly over my shoulder. I hugged the brown stuffed aardvark (土豚) doll tightly and whispered, “Hi, Artie.”
Last week, my mother finally noticed. “Why do you always disappear?” she asked at checkout. “Next time, your brother is going with you.”
Oh, no! My brother, Rich, was going to accompany me into the store. He would watch me and report everything to our mother.
Anyway, I wasn’t going to give up seeing my precious Artie. So, when Rich and I walked into the store together, I advised him to get the daily groceries, since he was older. He agreed but said I shouldn’t go off to look at the cosmetics (化妆品), as I wasn’t allowed to wear them yet.
He needn’t have worried about that; I was already heading toward Artie. There it was, awaiting me. I grabbed it and hugged it tightly. Just then, I heard my brother: “What in the world are you doing?”
“This is Artie,” I said. “I hug it every single time I come here. Don’t tell Mom. I know we can’t afford it, and I hope it doesn’t get sold, because I just love this little guy.”
The look on Rich’s face was unreadable, but I knew deep down that he wasn’t going to make fun of me. In fact, a few times when he accompanied me to the store, he said, “Go on and hug your ugly animal, if it’s still there, and I’ll get the groceries.”
One day before Thanksgiving Day, Rich was working with Dad somewhere, so Mom took me to Lehman’s but waited outside. “You go in by yourself,” she said. “My legs are tired today. Just don’t take forever, okay?”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I rushed straight to Artie’s shelf, but it was gone.

On Thanksgiving Day, as we were allowed to open one present, Rich walked up.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I rushed straight to Artie’s shelf, but it was gone. My heart dropped and panic surged through me. I searched up and down each aisle, my hopes fading with every empty spot. A kind clerk who noticed my distress said gently, “That aardvark doll was sold yesterday.” Tears blurred my vision. How could Artie be gone? Heartbroken, I stumbled out of the store, forcing a smile to Mom who was waiting for me outside. “Is everything alright?” Mom asked. “Nothing much,” I mumbled, hiding my trembling lip.
On Thanksgiving Day, as we were allowed to open one present, Rich walked up. He held out a small, clumsily wrapped box. “It’s for you,” he whispered. With surprise and curiosity, I carefully unwrapped it, and there lay Artie! I gasped, speechless with emotion. Rich grinned, “I bought him with all my savings. Now he’s yours forever.” Overwhelmed with joy, I hugged him tightly, with tears streaming down my cheeks. It wasn’t just a stuffed aardvark doll, but a gift of pure love from my family. It was the best Thanksgiving gift forever.

They also found willows and cottonwoods rooting at some wells, suggesting these spots could serve as nurseries for these declining desert trees.
B They learn to dig wells from some native equine species.
C. They are the primary cause of desert tree population decline.
D. They were once harmful invasive species disrupting the ecosystem.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
