B What’s the purpose of your study? It’s the question many basic-science researchers fear. And it’s the question that Carly Anne York received 10 years ago from a volunteer. At that time, York was a PhD student studying squid (鱿鱼). When asked why money should be spent on what the volunteer called “silly science”, York could only respond by stressing the essential value of knowledge. Today, York, an animal physiologist, still doesn’t know how her doctoral research can directly benefit humankind. But after a decade of studying how animals interact with their environments, York has come to realize that the focus on immediate applications is not the goal of basic science. Rather, it seeks to achieve profound comprehension of the world around us. That doesn’t mean the research is worthless. As York details in her new book, The Salmon Cannon and the Levitating Frog, projects that could be considered silly or useless can lead to scientific advances that better our lives. “More than half of all economic growth comes from innovations that began in the world of basic discovery,” York writes. So was, for example, the “salmon cannon (鲑鱼大炮)”. It was once a tube system used to transport apples gently down from trees — until it was repurposed to help salmon bypass hydroelectric dams and return to their freshwater breeding grounds. Other, more seemingly sensible methods had been attempted to help the salmon, but they were either ineffective or too labor intensive. The cannon’s tubes, which provide an air-powered ride over the dam, were the perfect, if unconventional, solution. Skillfully using her wisdom, York reminds us in her book that it’s nearly impossible for a science project to follow a direct path that results in an immediately applicable outcome. This book is a timely reminder especially when the U.S. government cuts science funding today. “I am also appreciative of the scientists who built the path to advance basic research,” York writes. “I hope that after reading this book you will be as well.” 14. What can we infer from the question in the first paragraph? A. The value of York’s work was doubted. B. Much money was wasted on York’s study. C. Researchers feared the failure of their work. D. Most research work lacked specific purposes. 15. What is the goal of basic science according to York? A. To have immediate applications. B. To create life-changing inventions. C. To further understand natural events. D. To build human-nature relationship. 16. What would York probably suggest about basic-science research? A. Promoting the positive outcome. B. Shortening the research process. C. Improving the practical application. D. Recognizing the long-term value. 17. Where is the passage most probably taken from? A. A biography of a famous animal physiologist. B. A news report on a recent scientific discovery. C. A book review defending the value of basic science. D. The introduction chapter of a research paper on salmon. C Have you ever wanted to share the taste of a delicious dish with a friend far away, only to find that words and pictures fall short of delivering the full experience? A new device called “e-Taste” can help. Developed by scientists at Ohio State University in the US, this device aims to improve digital experiences by adding “flavors” to them, reported Science Daily. Creating digital tastes is challenging. Taste is about “feeling” actual molecules (分子) that come out when teeth and saliva (唾液) break down food or drink, according to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). The molecules “wake up” certain cells on the tongue and along the roof and back of the mouth. With different sensitivity, these cells respond to at least one of the five basic tastes — sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami (鲜味) by sending signals to the thalamus (丘脑). It then transmits the signals to other brain regions where specific tastes are identified. Since the full flavor is experienced only when these signals are put together, creating taste requires collecting all this information. The “e-Taste” device does this using a special sensor. Like an “electronic tongue”, the sensor measures the levels of five chemicals in food or drink that contribute to the five basic tastes. Once gathered, the data is sent wirelessly to another part of the device. This part pushes up liquids through a gel layer that contains the five chemicals. By drinking the liquids, people can taste the food or drink no matter where they are. Real-world tests of “e-Taste” went well. It worked even when the device’s two parts were placed in different cities thousands of kilometers apart. Volunteers identified foods like fish soup with almost 87 percent success, according to a statement by The Ohio State University. Looking ahead, scientists plan to “conquer” more taste sensations, like spiciness. They also want to study the device’s effect on different people, given that taste is “greatly related to human emotion and memory”, said scientist Li Jinghua in the university’s statement. 18. What is the main purpose of the “e-Taste” device? A. To create new flavors in dishes. B. To identify different tastes of dishes. C. To describe tastes beyond words. D. To realize remote sharing of flavors. 19. What is the main focus of paragraph 2? A. How the human body experiences tastes. B. The challenges of developing digital tastes. C. The role of different parts of the mouth in tasting. D. How the five basic tastes interact with each other. 20 What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Gathering necessary data. B. Sending electrical signals. C. Experiencing the full flavor. D. Measuring the levels of tastes. 21. What can be inferred about the future plans of the scientists? A. Lowering its cost is their primary goal. B. Spiciness is their top research priority. C. They aim to stimulate a wider range of tastes. D. They will study the emotional impact of the device. D Researchers from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the University of Cologne (UC) in Germany have developed an AI-based learning system. The idea is simple yet effective: a webcam (网络摄像头) tracks students’ eye movements. Maike Schindler, a math professor from the UC, and her team have designed hundreds of math tasks involving basic math skills. Depending on the task, specific patterns appear, which are shown digitally on a heat map, with red indicating areas where the children look frequently and green showing the areas where they look only briefly. Confident students quickly get to key problem areas, while struggling ones often look aimlessly. “Tracking eye movements helps recognize different learning strategies through patterns and finally create detailed support reports for teachers,” says Maike Schindler. “The AI system sorts the patterns. On the basis, the software selects tailored learning videos and exercises for the pupil,” says robotics professor Achim Lilienthal from the TUM. To develop the new eye-tracking technology, Professor Lilienthal has drawn on his robotics research experience. In that work, he used eye trackers with a small human-like robot named Nao. It enables better communication with humans. However, these advanced systems with high accuracy cost many thousands of euros. To find a better solution for schools, the researchers cleverly mix technical experience with math knowledge. Instead of using high-end eye-trackers, their AI-driven approach uses regular webcams and makes up for low accuracy through AI improvements. “By focusing on problem areas, the AI adapts the eye-tracking with the webcam, achieving accuracy comparable to high-end tools,” professor Lilienthal says. Germany’s Wulfen Comprehensive School is the first to introduce the system. A math test there showed that about one-third of the new students struggled with basic math. With the AI system, one teacher can now support five students at once — a significant improvement over traditional one-on-one teaching. “As education faces teacher shortages and increasing pressure to deal with individual learning styles, our system for promoting basic math skills is simply excellent support for schools,” says Schindler. 22. What is the function of the heat map? A. Testing students’ math skills. B. Presenting students’ focus areas. C. Measuring the difficulty of math tasks. D. Tracking the eye movements of students. 23. Which best describes the AI-driven eye-tracking technology? A. Helpful but slow. B. Simple and relaxing. C. Creative but costly. D. Affordable and effective. 24. What does Wulfen Comprehensive School get from the system? A Reduction in teacher training. B. Adaptation to learning needs. C. Inspiration for advanced math. D. Improvement in school management. 25. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Heat Maps: A New Tool for Classroom Management B. Robot Nao: A Breakthrough in Educational Robotics C. Webcam Eye Tracker: An AI Tool for Personalized Learning D. Basic Math Skills: A Growing Challenge for German Schools IV.阅读填空(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) One of the most significant developments throughout history is the speed of information sharing. Due to the amount of information that’s shared, sometimes, negative news outweighs positive ones. ____27____ Consequently, the moment you open your phone, you’re met with news about conflict, disease or economic instability. Unavoidably, this will affect the way your brain processes information and ultimately your mental health. You may feel more worried when a friend says to you, “There’s nothing wrong with my life. ____28____” Possibly it’s because most of the conversations around you and the content you’re consuming center around what someone is doing wrong, or what you shouldn’t be doing with your life. It’s impossible to feel good about yourself when you’re constantly reminded of what’s going wrong. How lucky I am that I can choose to simply put my phone away when I don’t want to be reminded about a disease happening in a community! ____29____ It’s always essential to find the balance between staying informed and not letting the overconsumption of information affect our mental health. ____30____ If this information is mostly negative, we’ll suffer because of it. It’s the question many basic-science researchers fear. And it’s the question that Carly Anne York received 10 years ago from a volunteer. At that time York was a PhD student studying squid (鱿鱼). 【答案】14. A 15. C 16. D 17. 20. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to? 【答案】18. D 19. A 20. A 21. 24 What does Wulfen Comprehensive School get from the system? A. Reduction in teacher training. Basic Math Skills: A Growing Challenge for German Schools 【答案】22. B 23. D 24. B 25. With these preparations done 82. her hands were a little shaky at first 83. and carefully placing the stick under Roy’s injured arm 84. tied the strips around the stick and Roy’s arm 85. did she let out a sigh of relief 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要叙述了Ada对Roy实施急救的过程。 【81题详解】 考查语境。根据上文“Ada found a strong stick and tore a shirt into strips.(Ada找到一根结实的棍子,把一件衬衫撕成了条)”以及下文“she was ready to put her first aid knowledge into practice.(她准备把她的急救知识付诸实践)”可知,Ada已经做好了急救的准备工作。空处可处理为with复合结构,宾语为these preparations,do和宾语为被动关系,故用过去分词done作宾补。故填:With these preparations done。 82题详解】 考查语境。根据上文“As it was her first time providing emergency care(因为这是她第一次提供急救服务)”推知,下文可描写第一次提供急救的表现,比如一开始手有点发抖。as引导原因状语从句,空处为主句,主语是her hands,谓语是were,表语是a little shaky,状语是at first。故填:her hands were a little shaky at first。 【83题详解】 考查语境。根据下文“to make sure it was well supported.(以确保它得到很好的支持)”推知,空处应陈述Ada做了哪些确保胳膊能得到支撑的行为,例如把木棍小心地放在Roy受伤的胳膊下,“放置”用place,和comforted并列作谓语,也用一般过去时,宾语“木棍”用the stick表达,状语“在Roy受伤的胳膊下”用under Roy’s injured arm。故填:and carefully placing the stick under Roy’s injured arm。 【84题详解】 考查语境。根据下文“adjusting the stick to avoid putting too much pressure on it.(调整木棍以避免施加太大的压力)”推知,上文应提到Ada用布条将木棍和Roy的胳膊绑在一起,表示“绑”用tie的过去式tied,“布条”用the strips表达,“绕着木棍和Roy的胳膊”表达为around the stick and Roy’s arm。故填tied the strips around the stick and Roy’s arm。 【85题详解】 考查语境。根据上文“Not until the treatment was completed(直到治疗结束)”并结合Ada第一次提供急救可知,治疗结束后她松了一口,“松了一口气”用let out a sigh of relief表达,not until置于句首时,主句需要部分倒装,将助动词did提到主语she之前。故填did she let out a sigh of relief。 可以适当增加细节,以使行文连贯 ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Sharing Our Agricultural Study Project Hello everyone! Today I’m excited to share our group’s project “Observing the Interaction between Insects and Crops” from the agricultural study week. First, let’s talk about how we did it. We chose a sunny corner of the farm with various crops like tomatoes and beans. Then we divided tasks: some recorded insect types and numbers, some observed how they interacted with crops, and others took photos. Over five days, we found bees pollinate flowers to help crops bear fruit, ladybugs eat aphids that harm plants, but caterpillars and grasshoppers chew leaves. Earthworms and mantises also played important roles in the ecosystem. This project taught me a lot. I not only learned about insect-crop relationships but also realized teamwork makes tasks easier. It was amazing to see nature’s balance up close, and I now understand more about how agriculture works. Thanks for listening! 词汇积累 激动的:excited→ thrilled 各种各样的:various→ all kinds of 观察:observe→ watch 重要的:important→ vital 2.句式拓展 简单句变复合句 原句:Today I’m excited to share our group’s project “Observing the Interaction between Insects and Crops” from the agricultural study week. 拓展句:Today I’m excited to share our group’s project “Observing the Interaction between Insects and Crops” which we did during the agricultural study week. 【点睛】【高分句型1】Over five days, we found bees pollinate flowers to help crops bear fruit, ladybugs eat aphids that harm plants, but caterpillars and grasshoppers chew leaves.(运用了省略连接词that引导的宾语从句以及that引导的定语从句。) 【高分句型2】I not only learned about insect-crop relationships but also realized teamwork makes tasks easier.(运用了not only…but also…结构。) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
