It is that time of the year, when a handful of world’s leading scholars, social activists and researchers are rewarded with what is often cited as the most prestigious acknowledgement of human effort-the Nobel Prize. Here’s a look at who has won the prize and for what.
Physiology or Medicine
Swedish geneticist Svante Peabo won the first Nobel of the year, for starting the field of ancient DNA studies. He is well-known for extracting, sequencing, and analyzing ancient DNA from Neanderthal bones.
Physics
Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser and Anton Zeilinger’s work in quantum (量子) technology landed them the second Nobel Prize announced in 2022. Although Aspect is from France, Clauser from the U.S, and Zeilinger from Austria, the three separately performed “groundbreaking experiments” as one team. “Their results have cleared the way for new technology,” the committee stated.
Chemistry
The Nobel Prize for chemistry went to another trio, Carolyn R. Bertozzi from the U.S., Morten Meldal from Denmark and K. Barry Sharpless from the U.S. “for the development of click chemistry and biorthogonal chemistry,” the committee stated. Dr. Bertozzi is the eighth woman chemist to be awarded the prize, while Dr. Sharpless is the fifth scientist to be awarded two Nobel Prizes.
Economics
The Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded to three American economists, Ben S. Bernanke, Douglas W. Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig “for research on banks and financial crises,” the Nobel Prize committee announced on Monday. By studying the history of American economics, particularly the Great Depression of the 1930s,they improved how we understand the role of banks during times of hardship and the bank’s impact on societal functions.

“Instagram (a social networking app) will cut out many users’ accounts on December 20. To protect your account, repost this warning #Keep My Account Safe#.” Every few months, it happens again — a dozen of such annoying posts from my kids and their friends suddenly start to appear on my Instagram.
According to a new study by Stanford University, most kids don’t know what news is fake (假的). Researchers asked more than 7,800 middle school and high school students to complete 56 tasks, like telling the difference between an advertisement and a real news story on a website and determining which blog in a series was most reliable. Surprisingly, they found that students judged the credibility (可信性) of blogs based not on the source of the material, but on how much detail they contained, or whether a large photo was attached.
“Many people assume that because young people are fluent in social media, they can recognize fake news, but our work shows the opposite to be true,” wrote lead study author Sam Wineburg, a professor at Stanford’s Graduate School of Education.
Both Google and Facebook are now taking steps to control misleading news from making its way on their platforms, but they won’t be able to eliminate it completely. That is why it’s now more important than ever to teach our kids to think critically when it comes to believing various information sources.
“In the coming months, we look forward to sharing our assessments and working with educators to create materials that will guide young people in the sea of disinformation they encounter online,” said Wineburg.
4. How does the author introduce the topic or the passage?
A. By stating opinions. B. By showing findings. C. By quoting sayings. D. By citing a post
5. According to researchers, what determines the credibility of online information?
A. The source of the material. B. The popularity of the website.
C. The amount of details. D. The size of relevant photos.
6. What does the underlined word “eliminate” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Digest. B. Update. C. Estimate. D. Remove.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Stronger Together: The Internet Changes Our Life
B. Be Careful: Kids Are Bad at Identifying Fake News
C. Reliable News Has No Place on Social Media
D. Educators Have a Long Way to Go to Guide the Young
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. D 7. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍孩子难辨假新闻及应对建议。
【4题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段““Instagram (a social networking app) will cut out many users’ accounts on December 20. To protect your account, repost this warning #Keep My Account Safe#.” Every few months, it happens again — a dozen of such annoying posts from my kids and their friends suddenly start to appear on my Instagram. ( “Instagram (一款社交应用) 将于12月20日删除许多用户的账号。为保护你的账号,请转发此警告#Keep My Account Safe#。”每隔几个月,类似的情况就会再次发生——我的孩子和他们的朋友们突然在Instagram上发布大量此类烦人的消息)”可推知,作者通过引用一篇网络帖子来引出文章的主题。故选D。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Surprisingly, they found that students judged the credibility (可信性) of blogs based not on the source of the material, but on how much detail they contained, or whether a large photo was attached.(令人惊讶的是,他们发现学生判断博客可信度的标准并非信息来源,而是内容的详细程度,或是否附有一张大图)”以及第三段“Many people assume that because young people are fluent in social media, they can recognize fake news, but our work shows the opposite to be true(许多人认为年轻人精通社交媒体,所以能识别假新闻,但我们的研究结果恰恰相反)”并结合倒数第二段中“That is why it’s now more important than ever to teach our kids to think critically when it comes to believing various information sources.(这就是为什么现在比以往任何时候都更重要的是教我们的孩子在相信各种信息来源时进行批判性思考)”可知,研究人员发现学生判断可信度时是依据内容的详细程度,或者是否有大图,而研究者指出学生判断正好相反,因此推断出,研究者认为,信息可信度来自材料的来源。故选A。
【6题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第四段中“Both Google and Facebook are now taking steps to control misleading news from making its way on their platforms, but they won’t be able to (谷歌和Facebook现在都在采取措施控制误导性新闻在他们的平台上传播,但他们不可能)”可知,but表示转折,说明谷歌和Facebook不可能完全消除这些新闻,画线词与选项D含义相近,意思为“消除”。

How does social media affect our life today?
A lot of people believe that social media is just torture for kids and young adults, which in a way it is. It doesn’t allow them to be 100% themselves and it can cause them to overthink and become more anxious and less confident.
Social media has caused people to rethink everything they do online from liking or posting a photo to sharing a post in case someone thinks that what they support or enjoy is meaningless. Do you know that selfies (自拍) are one of the most frequent causes of death of the modern generation? In 2015, it was reported that a 21-year-old girl fell down a mountain just for selfies. There is a lot of such news every day, and that statistic is increasing every day.
With this generation, very few of them are speaking to each other directly because of communication on social media like messages. This can cause social anxiety for many people; they slowly lose their skills of how to speak to others face to face. I know it first-hand and it was difficult to tell myself that I needed to cut down on screen time and even harder to listen and do it.
At the same time, there are a lot of positives on social media. Social media is a great way to connect with people who live far away, which has really helped people come together and feel less lonely if they live alone. You can express yourself by sharing your favorite songs or posting pictures of your new outfit. It’s much harder to feel embarrassed online than in person, so it’s easier for people to express their feelings on social media.
Social media is also great for raising awareness about things like charities. It is a powerful tool for people to share their stories, reaching new audiences around the world. The list of movements is getting longer and longer every day as more and more people use social media to raise awareness and promote the movements.
In conclusion, social media has its advantages and disadvantages like everything else does. It’s all about how we use it.
8. What does the underlined word “torture” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Mental suffering. B. Something relaxing.
C. Physical damage. D. Something unexpected.
9. Why does the author mention the 21-year-old girl?
A. To offer a suggestion. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To make a comparison. D. To provide an example.
10. From the text, we learn the author ________.
A. once fought with his/ her best friends B. used to be addicted to the Internet
C. was injured for taking photos before D. used to participate in charity activities
11. What are paragraph 5 and paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. The meaning of charity. B. The importance of writing stories.
C. The advantages of social media. D. The necessity of reaching audiences.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. B 11. C
【解析】

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Do you know that selfies (自拍) are one of the most frequent causes of death of the modern generation? In 2015, it was reported that a 21-year-old girl fell down a mountain just for selfies.(你知道自拍是现代人最常见的死亡原因之一吗?据报道,2015年,一名21岁的女孩为了自拍从山上摔了下来)”可知,本段提及21岁的女孩是为了举例说明自拍可能造成的危险。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“I know it first-hand and it was difficult to tell myself that I needed to cut down on screen time and even harder to listen and do it.(我亲身知道很难告诉自己我需要减少看屏幕的时间,更难的是倾听并做到这一点)”可知,作者曾沉迷于网络。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段“At the same time, there are a lot of positives on social media.(与此同时,社交媒体上也有很多积极因素)”段和第六段“Social media is also great for raising awareness about things like charities.(社交媒体对于提高人们对慈善事业的认识也很有帮助)”可知,这两段主要介绍了社交媒体的优点。故选C。
D
The web is an information paradise (天堂) and a hell (地狱) at the same time. The platforms that control search were born in sin (罪恶). Their business model sells our most precious and limited cognitive (认知的) resource: attention. These platforms work overtime to attract our attention by feeding information that excites curiosity or causes anger. The more our eyesballs remain glued (盯着看) to the screen, the more ads they can show us, and the more profits they get.
It is hardly surprising, therefore, that all this could harm our collective attention. A recent analysis of social media content found that the rate at which the popularity of items rises and drops has accelerated. In a period of three years, for example, the popularity duration (持续时间) of a topic on social media decreased from an average of 17.5 hours to 11.9 hours. More competition leads to shorter collective attention intervals, which lead to ever-increasing competition for our attention.
To regain control, we need cognitive strategies (策略) that help us regain at least some independence and protect us from the traps (陷阱) and information disorders of today’s attention economy.
The textbook cognitive strategy is critical (批判性) thinking. But it is not enough. The digital world contains more information than the world’s libraries combined. Much of it comes from unconfirmed sources and is of doubtful trustworthiness. Critically thinking through all the information and sources we come across would completely disable us. Moreover, applying critical thinking to sources that should have been ignored in the first place means that those seeking our attention have been gifted what they wanted.
So, we argue that as much as we need critical thinking, we also need critical ignoring. Critical ignoring is more than just not paying attention — it’s about practicing mindful and healthy habits in the face of information overload. Without it, we will drown in a sea of information that is, at best, distracting and, at worst, misleading and harmful.
12. Why do the platforms keep us glued to the screen?
A. To get more profits. B. To show us more information.
C. To excite strong feelings. D. To attract more advertisements.
13. What does the underlined word “accelerated” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. fallen down. B. Speeded up. C. Grown smaller D. Become longer.
14. Why is critical ignoring necessary in the digital world?
A. Critical thinking is no longer applicable. B. Trustworthy information is rare on the Internet.
C. It can improve our critical thinking skills. D. It helps us deal with information overload.
15. What might the author talk about next?
A. The strategies for critical ignoring. B. The harm of misleading information.
C. The ways to improve cognitive strategies. D. The need for control of online platforms.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇议论文。本文主要讲述了网络平台为了获取利润,吸引眼球,散布虚假信息。因此,作者认为我们在网络平台获取信息的同时,应该要保持批判性。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段最后一句“The more our eyeballs remain glued to the screen, the more ads they can show us, and the more profits they get.(我们的眼球盯着屏幕的时间越长,他们就能给我们展示更多的广告,他们就能获得更多的利润)”可知,平台要让我们一直盯着屏幕是为了获取更大的利润。故选A。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段第二句“A recent analysis of social media content found that the rate at which the popularity of items rises and drops has accelerated.(最近对社交媒体内容的分析发现,这些项目的受欢迎程度上升和下降的速度已经accelerated)”和下文“In a period of three years, for example, the popularity duration (持续时间) of a topic on social media decreased from an average of 17.5 hours to 11.9 hours.(例如,在三年的时间里,一个话题在社交媒体上的流行时间从平均17.5小时下降到11.9小时)”可知,一些项目受欢迎的上升和下降速度已经加快了。由此猜测accelerate的意思是“加速”,与speed up同义。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Critical ignoring is more than just not paying attention — it’s about practicing mindful and healthy habits in the face of information overload.(批判性忽视不仅仅是不去关注——而是在信息过载面前培养正念且健康的习惯)”可知,批判性的忽视是必要的,它帮助我们处理过载的信息。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的内容“So, we argue that as much as we need critical thinking, we also need critical ignoring. Critical ignoring is more than just not paying attention — it’s about practicing mindful and healthy habits in the face of information overload. Without it , we will drown in a sea of information that is , at best , distracting and, at worst, misleading and harmful.(因此,我们认为,正如我们需要批判性思维一样,我们也需要批判性忽视。批判性忽视不仅仅是不去关注——而是在信息过载面前培养正念且健康的习惯。没有它,我们就会淹没在信息的海洋中,最好的情况是分心,最坏的情况是误导和有害)”可知,最后一段作者提出了批判性忽视的必要性,所以接下来作者可能会谈论一些关于批判性忽视的策略。故选A。
根据短文内容,从给出的七个选项中,填入五个最适合语境的选项。

Torrie Norwood was a girl student at Lakewood High School, which offered a life-saving course. Torrie was very interested and she was registered at the class. Instructor Erika Miller was a long-time and skilled teacher, who taught basic life support, CPR (心肺复苏), along with Heartsaver First Aid. Erika stressed that life-saving skills were very important. To save a person’s life, you must perform CPR within 4-6 minutes. “You never know when an emergency will occur,” Erika said. “But you know what you should do at a crucial moment.” When Torrie finished the course last Friday, she was glad to earn her certification.
The next day Torrie and her three classmates had just spent a typical Saturday night out when they decided to head home. As they drove back to their hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida, a speeding pickup truck crashed into them. Then the screaming started. “It’s gonna blow!” yelled the gathering crowd as the pickup truck went up in smoke.
Torrie’s door wouldn’t open, but her window had been knocked out during the crash, so she was forced to climb through her window to get out. Two of her classmates, both unhurt, were also able to free themselves from the vehicle.
But when Torrie turned around, she didn’t see Simmons running with them. Torrie realized that her friend Simmons was still in the car. Torrie had to run back to the car as fast as she could. She was still in there—unresponsive in the back seat. There was glass and blood everywhere. Things didn’t look good.
Simmons had hit her head on a rear passenger window. The great force resulted in life-threatening injuries. After pulling Simmons out from the car quickly, Torrie gently laid her on the ground and checked her vital signs, unable to detect a pulse (脉搏).

Para.2
A few weeks later Simmons recovered in the hospital.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Instead of freezing in fear, Torrie kept calm. She remembered the life-saving course she had just completed and the skills she had learned. With a steady hand, she began chest compressions, counting aloud. Her training kicked in, and she was able to perform CPR efficiently, her mind focused on the task at hand. The crowd watched silently, leaving only the sound of her voice and the desperate hope that she could save her friend's life. Torrie’s actions were a testament to her courage and the effectiveness of the training she had received. She continued the CPR as the seconds ticked by, until the sound of sirens in the distance signaled the arrival of emergency services.
A few weeks later, Simmons recovered in the hospital. The doctors had told her that she was extremely fortunate to have survived the accident, and to have a friend like Torrie who knew exactly what to do in such a critical situation. The impact of the crash had been severe, and without Torrie’s immediate response, the outcome could have been tragic. As Simmons lay in her hospital bed, she thought about the events of that fateful night and the life-saving skills that had been so recently taught to her friend. She was grateful not only for Torrie’s quick thinking and bravery but also for the foresight of the school to offer such a vital course. The incident made everyone involved realize the importance of learning life-saving courses positively.

“In the coming months we look forward to sharing our assessments and working with educators to create materials that will guide young people in the sea of disinformation they encounter online,” said Wineburg.
4. How does the author introduce the topic or the passage?
A. By stating opinions. B. By showing findings. C. By quoting sayings. D. By citing a post
5. According to researchers, what determines the credibility of online information?
A. The source of the material. B. The popularity of the website.
C. The amount of details. D. The size of relevant photos.
6. What does the underlined word “eliminate” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Digest. B. Update. C. Estimate. D. Remove.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A Stronger Together: The Internet Changes Our Life
B. Be Careful: Kids Are Bad at Identifying Fake News
C. Reliable News Has No Place on Social Media
D. Educators Have a Long Way to Go to Guide the Young
C
8 What does the underlined word “torture” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Mental suffering. B. Something relaxing.
C. Physical damage. D. Something unexpected.
9. Why does the author mention the 21-year-old girl?
A. To offer a suggestion. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To make a comparison. D. To provide an example.
10. From the text, we learn the author ________.
A. once fought with his/ her best friends B. used to be addicted to the Internet
C. was injured for taking photos before D. used to participate in charity activities
11. What are paragraph 5 and paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. The meaning of charity. B. The importance of writing stories.
C. The advantages of social media. D. The necessity of reaching audiences.
