18. What do we know about Kantamanto?
A. It’s the capital of Ghana. B. It’s a secondhand market. C. It’s the biggest city in the world.
19. How many pieces of donated clothing go to waste every week in Kantamanto?
A. About 8 million. B. About 20 million. C. About 40 million.
20. Which is the effect of clothing waste on fishing in Accra?
A. Fish often mistake parts of old clothes for food.
B. Sea birds often get caught in old clothes.
C. Fishing nets often catch old clothes.
B 19. A 20. C
W: Many of us donate old clothes to charity shops, but do you know that most aren’t sold? According to The Guardian, only about 20% are sold. The rest are packed and sent abroad, often to places like Ghana, either for resale or to be thrown away.
In Ghana’s capital, Accra, there is a huge secondhand clothing market called Kantamanto. It’s one of the biggest markets in the world. Every week, this market receives around 20 million pieces of used clothing. Unfortunately, about 40% of these clothes end up as waste. Workers either burn this waste or bury it underground, but since Accra is close to the sea and doesn’t have enough space for landfills, a lot of waste ends up on the beaches and in the water.
This is a big problem for the environment. Clothing waste harms sea life. Sea birds might mistake parts of old clothes for food, and fish often get caught in the old clothes, preventing them from growing properly. This also hurts the local economy. Fishermen find it harder to catch fish because their nets often bring up clothes instead.

High School Programmes in Australia
Beautiful weather friendly people and a widely varied landscape are just a few of the reasons you should choose to spend time in Australia as a high school student. Here are some programmes you can choose from.
High School Exchange
Individuals studying for a semester or full year in Australia will usually live with a host family. This is a great opportunity for students to see what daily family life is like in Australia. Students learning English will see their language skills improve by communicating with their new friends and host family, while those familiar with the language already can use this opportunity to learn more about the day-to-day life in Australia.
Youth Travel Tours
Travel tours for teens are a wonderful way for high school students to spend a short, concentrated amount of time abroad. Tours are usually for different themes such as cooking, adventure travel, or volunteerism. Students will have a fun, unique experience with educational components like environmental or cultural studies — and all without missing your normal coursework back home.
Summer Study Programme
For students who only have a few months of the summer break available, an advanced summer programme is perfect. Just keep in mind, the summer of the northern hemisphere (半球) is actually the winter of Australia. Oftentimes these summer programmes can be partnered with universities that will allow students to receive college credits.
21. What can High School Exchange offer?
A. A better understanding of Australian culture.
B. A good knowledge of what we learn at school.
C. A wonderful way to communicate with famous teachers.
D. A precious chance to make friends from different countries.
22. Who is most likely to choose Youth Travel Tours?
A. Those who have ever been volunteers. B. Those who are interested in cooking.
C. Those who like doing adventure sports. D. Those who want to take a part-time job.
23. What should students pay attention to when applying for the Summer Study Programme?
A. The programme requires a full academic year.
B. Students must volunteer as part of the programme.
C. The programme is only available to students ready for university.
D. Australia’s winter occurs during the northern hemisphere’s summer.
A 22. B 23. D
根据High School Exchange部分“Students learning English will see their language skills improve by communicating with their new friends and host family, while those familiar with the language already can use this opportunity to learn more about the day-to-day life in Australia. (学习英语的学生通过与新朋友和寄宿家庭交流,语言能力会得到提升,而那些已经熟悉英语的学生则可以利用这个机会更多地了解澳大利亚的日常生活。)”可知,高中交换项目能让学生更了解澳大利亚文化(日常生活是文化的一部分)。故选A。
根据Youth Travel Tours部分“Tours are usually for different themes such as cooking, adventure travel, or volunteerism. (旅行团通常有不同主题,如烹饪、探险旅行或志愿服务。)”可知,对烹饪感兴趣的人最有可能选择该项目。故选B。
【23题详解】
细节理解题。根据Summer Study Programme部分“Just keep in mind, the summer of the northern hemisphere (半球) is actually the winter of Australia. (请记住,北半球的夏天实际上是澳大利亚的冬天。)”可知,申请该项目时,学生需注意澳大利亚的冬天对应北半球的夏天。故选D。
B
I teach at a university. One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age — 18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board.
Let me make it clear by using an example: Recently, when I walked into my class, my students were chatting happily with each other. One of their comments caught my ear: “Venmo it to me.” I had no idea what “Venmo” meant, so I asked. The good-natured students were happy to explain it to me, and in return I nodded with an embarrassed expression, as if I should have known better.
I went home that evening, absorbed in that moment of incomprehension (不理解). I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with change when its pace has me hanging on by my fingernails. If I were to awake from a five-year nap, I’d have no idea what people were talking about. I just wouldn’t understand the language.
Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they’re talking about, as well as on my ability — for the most part — to understand their explanations.
But what will happen if my interest wanes and the language ship finally disappears over the horizon?
24. What did the author probably meet with?
A. Hearing loss. B. Culture shock. C. A language barrier. D. A teaching problem.
25. What makes the author fall behind in language?
A. Learning needs. B. Teaching tasks. C. Age difference. D. Language abuse.
26. What does the author think of language change?
A. It is completely avoidable. B. It is really small.
C. It is very beneficial. D. It is much too dramatic.
27. What does the underlined word “wanes” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Reduces. B. Grows. C. Happens. D. Focuses.
C 25. C 26. D 27. A
根据第一段“But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board. (但最近我清楚地意识到,一艘“语言之船”似乎已经启航,而我却没有上船)”及第二段“I had no idea what “Venmo” meant, so I asked.(我不知道Venmo是什么意思,于是就问了)”可知,作者因不懂学生使用的词汇,面临语言沟通上的障碍。故选C项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age — 18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board.(其中一个“问题”是,随着时间的推移,我变老了,但我的学生仍然是18到22岁。早期,当我二三十岁的时候,这不是一个问题,因为我们的年龄足够接近,可以说同样的语言。但最近我清楚地意识到,一艘语言之船似乎已经启航,而我不在船上)”可知,作者年轻时与学生年龄相近无语言问题,如今因年龄差距变大,逐渐跟不上学生的语言。故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with change when its pace has me hanging on by my fingernails. If I were to awake from a five-year nap, I’d have no idea what people were talking about. (我并不反对变化,但当变化的速度快到让我勉力支撑时,我会感到不适。如果我昏睡五年后醒来,我会完全不知道人们在说什么)”可知,作者认为语言变化的速度过快、过于剧烈,让自己难以跟上。故选D项。
【27题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they’re talking about, as well as on my ability — for the most part — to understand their explanations.(他们愿意向我解释他们的话是一种极大的安慰,我庆幸自己至少对他们所说的内容感兴趣,以及我在很大程度上理解他们解释的能力)”及最后一段“But what will happen if my interest wanes and the language ship finally disappears over the horizon? (但如果我的兴趣wanes,而那艘“语言之船”最终消失在视野中,会发生什么呢?)”可知,句中的But表转折,此处与前文“有兴趣”形成对比,推测此处表示兴趣减少,划线单词表示“减少”,与Reduces意义相近。故选A项。
C
You forget to bring your water bottle to the airport, so you buy a plastic one and keep refilling it. Or you order takeout for dinner and save the black plastic container to pack your lunch the next day. Reuse is one of the core rules of sustainability. But should you be reusing these single-use plastics? Experts say no.
Single-use plastics leach (滤出) chemicals and shed (释放) microplastics into your environment. Though studies have not directly compared single-use and reusable plastic, experts say they are more concerned about single-use plastics because of how they’re made. A single-use plastic water bottle sheds micro and nano plastics into your water when you refill it, and a takeout container or frozen meal tray sheds these particles into your food. Chemical exposure increases if plastic is heated, typically in a microwave, a dishwasher or even by placing hot food in a takeout container. When heat is applied, molecules move faster, meaning it could be easier for some of these particles to make its way into your food.
Concerns with chemicals and microplastics primarily apply to food, experts said, because you are swallowing them. Reusing single-use plastics like grocery bags is not a major concern, they added. The most important thing you should do is avoid heating your plastic, experts agreed. “A pretty hard-and-fast rule is to never microwave plastic,” Enck said. “And there’s also a recommendation not to put plastic into the dishwasher if it’s on a hot cycle.”
28. Why does the author list examples in the first paragraph?
A. To lead into the topic. B. To analyse the reason.
C. To prove the experts’ opinion. D. To introduce the background information.
29. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Plastic bottles of good quality are encouraged for use.
B. It is the chemicals in the materials that cause trouble.
C. High temperature makes little difference to takeout food.
D. Reusable plastic is more dangerous than single-use plastic.
30. According to the passage, which of the following harms human health most?
A. Heating fast food in a glass bowl. B. Filling the grocery bag with meat.
C. Packing cold drink with single-use plastics. D. Eating hot soup contained in a single-use plastic bag.
31. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Stop Using Single-use Plastics B. Reusing Single-use Plastics Is Harmful
C. How to Correctly Use Single-use Plastics D. The Astonishing Fact of Single-use Plastics
A 29. B 30. D 31. B
根据第一段“You forget to bring your water bottle to the airport, so you buy a plastic one and keep refilling it. Or you order takeout for dinner and save the black plastic container to pack your lunch the next day. Reuse is one of the core rules of sustainability. But should you be reusing these single-use plastics? Experts say no. (你去机场时忘了带水壶,于是买了一个塑料水壶,然后一直用它装水。或者你点了外卖当晚餐,然后把黑色塑料餐盒留到第二天装午餐。重复使用是可持续发展的核心原则之一。但你应该重复使用这些一次性塑料吗?专家们表示不应该)”可知,作者先列举重复使用一次性塑料的日常例子,再通过转折提出核心问题,目的是引出“一次性塑料不宜重复使用”的主题。故选A项。
根据第二段“Single-use plastics leach (滤出) chemicals and shed (释放) microplastics into your environment. (一次性塑料会滤出化学物质,并向周围环境释放微塑料)”及“A single-use plastic water bottle sheds micro and nano plastics into your water when you refill it, and a takeout container or frozen meal tray sheds these particles into your food. (当你给一次性塑料水瓶加水时,它会向水中释放微塑料和纳米塑料;外卖餐盒或冷冻食品托盘则会向食物中释放这些颗粒)”可知,一次性塑料的问题源于其释放的化学物质和塑料颗粒,即材料中的化学物质引发了危害。故选B项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Chemical exposure increases if pastic is heated, typically in a microwave, a dishwasher or even by placing hot food in a takeout container. (如果塑料被加热,通常是在微波炉、洗碗机中,甚至是将热食物放入外卖餐盒中,化学物质的接触量会增加)”及第三段“Concerns with chemicals and microplastics primarily apply to food, experts said, because you are swallowing them. (专家表示,对化学物质和微塑料的担忧主要集中在食物方面,因为你会吞下它们)”可知,接触热的食物且通过饮食摄入时,危害最大,“用一次性塑料袋装热汤喝”符合“热食+一次性塑料+吞咽摄入”的高风险条件。故选D项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“But should you be reusing these single-use plastics? Experts say no. (但你应该重复使用这些一次性塑料吗?专家们表示不应该)”、第二段“Single-use plastics leach (滤出) chemicals and shed (释放) microplastics into your environment. (一次性塑料会滤出化学物质,并向周围环境释放微塑料)”及第三段“Concerns with chemicals and microplastics primarily apply to food, experts said, because you are swallowing them. (专家说,对化学物质和微塑料的担忧主要适用于食物,因为你正在吞咽它们)”可知,文章围绕“重复使用一次性塑料有害”展开,分析危害并给出建议,所以“重复使用一次性塑料有害”适合作为文章标题。故选B项。
D
Learning a second language is far more than adding a line to a résumé; it is repeatedly lifting weights inside the head. A growing number of neuro-scientific studies show that the mental gymnastics required to master new grammar rules and thousands of unfamiliar words change the brain in three clear ways.
First, bilinguals (双语者) perform better than monolinguals (单语者) on both short-term and irregular memory tests because every new vocabulary item forces the hippocampus (海马体) to create and refresh extra neural (神经的) paths. In one large study of 2,400 participants, people who spoke two languages recalled 18% more items on average than those who spoke only one.
Second, handling two language systems teaches the brain to suppress the language that is not needed at the moment, a skill that transfers naturally to any task that requires concentration. Researchers at the University of Edinburgh found that bilingual adults could stay focused on a boring computer task for 12 minutes longer than matched monolinguals, a gap equal to the increase produced by three weekly sessions of mindfulness training.
Third, and perhaps most surprising, language learning slows cognitive (认知的) ageing. A 15-year study published in Neurology followed 835 seniors for fifteen years. Even after education and income were controlled, those who regularly used two languages developed Alzheimer’s symptoms (阿兹海默症状) 4.5 years later than single-language speakers, suggesting that bilingualism builds a “cognitive reserve” that keeps the ageing brain more flexible.
The evidence, therefore, supports a strong claim: acquiring an additional language is one of the cheapest, safest and most practical tools we have for keeping the mind fit across the lifespan. Schools that cut language classes to save money may lose a simple but powerful tool for students’ long-term brain health.
32. What can we learn about bilinguals from the second paragraph?
A. Their short-term memory is naturally stronger.
B. They are better at learning new vocabulary than monolinguals.
C. They may gain some newly-developed neural paths in their brains.
D. There is little obvious difference in their memory performance.
33. What main advantage do bilinguals have as shown in the third paragraph?
A. They are better at boring tasks.
B. They can learn a new language faster.
C. They are more skilled in operating computer tasks.
D. They have stronger cognitive control ability related to concentration.
34. Why do bilingual seniors develop Alzheimer’s symptoms later than monolinguals?
A. They usually have higher income.
B. They generally receive better education.
C. Bilingualism allows them to slow down ageing.
D. Speaking two languages protects the flexibility of the ageing brain.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards schools cutting language classes?
A. Supportive. B. Satisfied. C. Opposing. D. Doubtful.
C 33. D 34. D 35. C
根据第二段“First, bilinguals perform better than monolinguals on both short-term and irregular memory tests because every new vocabulary item forces the hippocampus to create and refresh extra neural paths (首先,双语者在短期记忆和非常规记忆测试中表现优于单语者,因为每个新词汇都会迫使海马体创建并更新额外的神经通路)”可知,双语者的大脑可能会形成一些新开发的神经通路。
根据第三段“Second, handling two language systems teaches the brain to suppress the language that is not needed at the moment, a skill that transfers naturally to any task that requires concentration (其次,处理两种语言系统能训练大脑抑制当下不需要的语言,这种技能会自然迁移到任何需要专注的任务中)”可知,双语者的主要优势在于拥有与专注力相关的更强认知控制能力。
根据第四段“Even after education and income were controlled, those who regularly used two languages developed Alzheimer’s symptoms (阿兹海默症状) 4.5 years later than single-language speakers, suggesting that bilingualism builds a “cognitive reserve” that keeps the ageing brain more flexible (即使在控制了教育和收入因素后,经常使用两种语言的人比单语者出现阿尔茨海默症状的时间晚 4.5 年,这表明双语能力构建了一种‘认知储备’,能让衰老的大脑保持更高的灵活性)”可知,双语老年人出现阿尔茨海默症状更晚,是因为双语能力保护了衰老大脑的灵活性。
根据最后一段“Schools that cut language classes to save money may lose a simple but powerful tool for students’ long-term brain health (为省钱而削减语言课程的学校,可能会失去一个对学生长期大脑健康而言简单却有力的工具)”可知,作者认为削减语言课程会损害学生利益,态度是反对的。故选C。

Soothe the Sunday Scares
Most of us look forward to the weekend as a time to relax. But as the weekend comes to an end, many of us are missing out on “Sunday Funday” and instead experiencing a sense of anxiety and even fear the upcoming week.
That sense of fear on Sunday can come from many different sources. Fear of failure, criticism at work, especially from high-pressure jobs. A reminder after a weekend of “me time” that will be given to your work the next five days. Exhaustion (疲惫不堪) after a busy weekend, making you worried about the demands of the coming week. ____36____ Here’s how experts say you can ease your end-of-weekend anxiety.
Identify your anxiety sources.
Anxiety is a normal human experience, and one of the main ways to manage it is to identify your personal triggers. ____37____ Is it a deadline, meeting or presentation? Even if there’s not a single reason behind your Sunday anxiety, organizing the stress you expect from the week ahead into bite-sized chunks can help make it all more manageable.
Don’t forget to relax.
When structuring your Sunday, try not to cram in (塞进去) too many errands and chores. ____38____ Maybe a body meditation, maybe a midafternoon shower or bath, maybe an engaging movie or show. Whatever feels like a helpful distraction to get away from the scares.
____39____
Getting rid of the Sunday scares isn’t just about minimizing the doom and gloom of the week ahead. Having something to expect gives you something pleasant to think about. Instead of focusing on the awful things from the upcoming week, build excitement over a coffee or lunch date with a friend or workmate. ____40____
A. End your Sunday with the right energy.
B. Create excitement for the coming week.
C. Try to find out what’s really causing you to fear the week.

及下文“Here’s how experts say you can ease your end-of-weekend anxiety. F选项“But even though the Sunday scares are common, they are manageable. Instead of focusing on the awful things from the upcoming week, build excitement over a coffee or lunch date with a friend or workmate. B选项“Create excitement for the coming week.
Before my trip to Venice, I had heard two things: it’s always crowded, and getting lost is part of the fun. I decided to explore freely.
When I got off the ferry (渡船), I was very excited and immediately understood that the part about crowds was true. Traveling alone for one day, I suddenly felt very lonely in the noisy streets. So I decided to put off visiting famous Piazza San Marco (圣马可广场) and wandered down the narrow stone walkways. I eventually reached a quiet courtyard with no other exit except an archway. I walked over, hoping to spot a gondola
However, I fell in.
Two things I wish I’d heard about Venice: the edges of walkways are often slippery (湿滑的), and falling happens faster than you’d think.
After climbing back up, wet and hurt, I was glad my bag stayed dry. Then I reached into my pocket only to find it empty. My phone had fallen into the canal with all of my photos, travel plans, and ability to contact anyone.
What do you do after this? I stayed calm and took a boat back to my hotel. After a shower, I treated myself to a drink at the hotel bar.
A friendly girl nearby noticed my mood and asked, “Are you okay, Miss?” I broke down in tears. Soon, several travelers from different countries gathered around me. An American let me use his tablet, and a Swiss tourist suggested, “Let’s get dinner!”
That evening, we took the ferry again — this time, I was surrounded by new friends and warmed by their unexpected kindness. We shared pasta, wine, and laughter. Later, sometime very late, we walked through the empty streets, lost, until we turned a corner and found ourselves in Piazza San Marco. Normally full of people, tonight it was just ours.

It was empty. / There were no crowds.
根据第八段“That evening, we took the ferry again — this time, I was surrounded by new friends and warmed by their unexpected kindness. (那天晚上,我们再次乘坐渡船——这一次,我身边围绕着新朋友,他们意外的善意让我感到温暖)”以及全文内容可知,作者旅途中最难忘的是他人的善意。故答案为The kindness from others. / The value of human connection.

Dear Mike,
I’m delighted to hear about the establishment of your Table Tennis Club. I’d like to offer a few promotional strategies to attract more students.
Firstly, consider hosting exciting table tennis challenges. These events can capture students’ interest and foster a vibrant atmosphere on campus. Secondly, organize skill workshops with professional coaches or seasoned players. They can demonstrate techniques such as serving and returning shots, which will deepen students’ appreciation for the sport. Lastly, set up friendly matches with other schools. This not only highlights members’ abilities but also broadens the club’s reach.
Hope these suggestions will draw more students to join. Feel free to reach me if you have any questions.
Best regards,
Li Hua

High School Programmes in Australia
Beautiful weather, friendly people and a widely varied landscape are just a few of the reasons you should choose to spend time in Australia as a high school student.
26 What does the author think of language change?
A. It is completely avoidable. B. It is really small.
C. It is very beneficial. D. It is much too dramatic.
27. What does the underlined word “wanes” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Reduces. B. Grows. C. Happens. D. Focuses.

B It is the chemicals in the materials that cause trouble.
A. Supportive. B. Satisfied. C. Opposing. D. Doubtful.

D. Structure can be a best friend when you feel the Sunday scares.
E. It’s important to make space for relaxing activities to refresh yourself.
F. But even though the Sunday scares are common, they are manageable.
G. This gives you the opportunity to change your thoughts to something fun and helpful.
