As a clueless, naive freshman, I waltzed into my first creative writing course by accident, thinking it was a literature class on how to read stories, not how to write them.
When the teacher introduced the course, I realized my mistake. The credits (学分) I earned from the course wouldn’t count toward my major (专业). By the end of the class, however, I decided that I had to be a part of the course. Perhaps, as a lifelong reader, I was eager to understand how stories worked their magic.
But taking the class would be impossible: I wasn’t even on the wait-list That’s when the teacher asked for a volunteer to submit (提交) the first workshop story.
Silence blanketed the room. No one risked eye contact. Whoever volunteered would have to write a whole story in a week. Perhaps they, like me, had never written one before.
Seizing my chance, I raised my hand and asked, “If I go first, will you give me a spot in the class?” He said he would.
So, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite (相反).
Years later, I’d completed a degree (学位) in creative writing and was working on a novel when a literary agent (经纪人) asked to read the first 50 pages of my draft (草稿). But I wasn’t comfortable showing her anything; the novel was far from done.
Throughout graduate school, I’d been advised many times not to contact (联络) agents until I have a complete draft. But in the meanwhile, I knew the beginning of my story was attractive and that the agent might not remember me after a year.
So, once again, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite. I sent her the first three chapters. A month later, she signed (签约) me on the strength of those chapters alone. She has since seen me through the publication (出版) of three novels.
Determination, focus, perseverance — the qualities that I consider crucial in getting me into Stanford no doubt helped me become the novelist I am today. And yet if I’d trained my gaze only on the path ahead, I would have missed so many happy accidents, so many beautiful opportunities to look up, raise my hand, and say yes.

For my family, Saturday mornings were always for dim sum (点心). While many families had sandwiches or bread, we gathered around plates of shrimp dumplings (虾饺), rice rolls, and turnip cakes, with pots of hot tea.
Dim sum wasn’t just about food — it was about family. My mom often handed me the menu (菜单), written in Chinese. “If you want to eat it, you have to read it,” she said. I tried hard to find the right characters for “bun” or “rice”. She reminded me, “You need to keep up your language. Dim sum is about connection to family.”
We always went to the same noisy tea house, where my immigrant (移民) mother would come alive. Usually quiet and shy, my mom often smiled instead of talking, because her English wasn’t strong. But in the restaurant, she became a different person. She was full of energy and very friendly. She spoke easily with the waiters and waitresses, asking about their families and telling funny stories. Sometimes, they secretly wrote a small mark on our order paper. It was a special sign that gave us a 10% discount. For my mom, going out for dim sum was more than just eating. It made her feel at home. In that place, everything felt natural, warm, and easy.
One Saturday, my parents shared news: they would return to Hong Kong to care for my aging grandparents. I had just started college and was visiting home. I didn’t know what to say, so I looked away. Quietly, my mom placed the last shrimp dumpling into my bowl. “Eat up,” she said. “You might not get dim sum for a while.”
Later, I missed those mornings. At school, I bought frozen (冷冻) shrimp dumplings from a small Asian store. I ate them alone, but I always took a photo and sent it to my mom. She sent back pictures of her meals — fresh, bright, and warm. Even when we disagreed on life, we shared dim sum. It was our way of saying “I love you” without words.
8. What did the mother expect the author to do with the menu?
A. Choose the cheapest plates. B. Order the family’s favorites.
C. Guess what each dish was. D. Practise reading Chinese.
9. Why did the mother become different inside the tea house?
A. She found a sense of belonging.
B. She enjoyed the natural food there.
C. She could easily speak to the guests.
D. She was always given a 10% discount.
10. Why does the author mention the “small mark” that knocked 10% off the bill?
A. To stress the popularity of her family in the area.
B. To show the special bond Mom had with the staff.
C. To prove the restaurant was friendly and full of energy.
D. To explain why they ate dim sum on Saturday morning.
11. What message does the last paragraph convey (传达)?
A. Frozen dim sum can taste just as good as in restaurants.
B. Shared lifestyle can keep love alive when words fail.
C. The author’s cooking couldn’t equal the tea-house’s.
D. The author’s mother couldn’t look after her forever.
D
As we prepare learners with the skills needed for the 21st century, there is a greater desire to further integrate (融合) technology into our classrooms. Whether it’s a K-12 or college classroom, it’s hard to find an environment that does not integrate technology in some form or another. In some cases, online learning has replaced the physical classroom altogether. As educators, we owe it to (归于) ourselves and our students to use these benefits. However, while technology offers significant advantages, simply integrating it as an alternative (另一种) source of learning or as another way to assess (评价) students is not as effective as we think.
We must remind ourselves that any form of learning technology should also be guided. These resources are just tools and require high-quality guided practice from the teachers. These tools, combined with guidance, can offer good instruction, practice and motivation. While technology can positively impact learning outcomes, it may be even more effective for some students if it’s teacher-led and integrated into a well-designed course.
Technology is rapidly changing the educational environment and challenging students to adapt accordingly. It can confuse students who are struggling to learn how to use a learning platform besides picking up the actual subject. Some may wonder, “Why should I waste time learning how to create a podcast (播客) when I could simply write the paper?”
It’s a reasonable question. We must not assume (假定) students who were raised using technology are always comfortable learning with these tools. Students may struggle if a teacher fails to teach the basic knowledge of the tools. Technology may mean little without proper goals, structures for its application, and trained teachers.
Educators (教育者) are also tasked with providing students the skills they need to stand out in a highly competitive (竞争激烈的) and technologically-based workplace. Many of the skills acquired through online classes are valuable professional skills. Students taught how to use multiple learning technologies effectively have a great advantage over those who are simply using technology to communicate in the online classroom. Regardless of the subjects we teach, integrating technology gives our students the opportunity to not only learn the content, but also to develop skills useful beyond our classrooms. Technology, when integrated and balanced properly with the course and with student needs, can make us more effective as educators.
12. What is important to the learning technology?
A. Instruction and revision (复习). B. Comprehension (理解) and application.
C. Guidance and arrangements (安排). D. Diversity (多样) and flexibility (灵活).
13. According to the passage, what should an educator do?
A. Arrange online assignment for students.
B. Help students master online technology.
C. Prepare students with rules in the workplace.
D. Inform students of the value of the learning tools.
14. What is the author’s attitude toward learning technology?
A. Negative. B. Uninterested. C. Unsure. D. Positive.
15. What can be a suitable title (标题) for the passage?
A. Does Technology Boost Educational Effectiveness?
B. Should Students Use Learning Technology As A Tool?
C. Can Technology Put An End To Traditional Classrooms?
D. Are Learning Skills More Important Than Learning Contents?
E
A quiet space is often considered important for achieving the concentration, or focus, that leads to academic (学术的) success. But research shows that some students may benefit from breaking the silence with certain kinds of music while they study. Music has a powerful influence on both the body and the brain, in ways that can help students navigate the physical and emotional barriers that come with academic challenges.
One US study compared students who took a test to soft music with those who took the test under silent conditions. The study found that students taking a test to music not only completed more questions within a set time but also answered more questions correctly. Music has been further linked to improvements in memory and recall. Experts have found that when music stimulates mood (情绪) and motivation, students are able to learn more and to better demonstrate (展现) their knowledge.
A bit of mood music affects more than just memory and recall when students hit the books. Music can also relieve stress related to school. Scientists have learned that music engages the autonomic nervous system (自主神经系统), which not only controls the unconscious functions of the body but also influences emotions (情感). So it’s no surprise that researchers from the Group Health Research Institute concluded that certain kinds of background music can be just as effective at reducing stress as a massage (按摩). Furthermore, while the brain feels better with music, the body may as well. Research shows that certain types of music can make physical pain feel less intense. What’s more, calming music with a steady, meditative rhythm can help people sleep longer and more deeply.
However, some educators express concern that listening to music while trying to concentrate may do more harm than good. Loud music may have a negative influence on a student’s mood or act as a distraction.
Actually, the best approach (方法) may depend on the students themselves. Listening to music during study time may not mean a guaranteed (保证的) A for all students, but those who find it helpful should be allowed to plug in their headphones (耳机).
16. What does the underlined word “stimulates” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A. Reduces. B. Inspires. C. Describes. D. Changes.
17. According to the passage, music can ________.
A. cure physical pain. B. control body movements.
C. guarantee academic success. D. improve brain functions.
18. How does the author write this passage mainly?
A. By presenting facts. B. By comparing students.
C. By listing numbers. D. By giving examples.
19. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The way to listen to music. B. The harm of using headphones.
C. The advice on what to do. D. The approaches of the researches.

Highly sensitive person or HSP, is a term coined by psychologist Elaine Aron. According to research, in every five people, there’s one HSP. ____20____ HSPs have strong self-consciousness; they may struggle to adapt to new circumstances, demonstrate seemingly inappropriate emotional responses in social situations, and easily become uncomfortable in response to light, sound or certain physical sensations. ____21____
The power of insensitivity can be interpreted as “sluggish (迟缓) power”. Usually, people associate “insensitivity” with something bad, but insensitivity does not equal dullness. ____22____ That is, calmly facing the setbacks and downtime in life and firmly moving towards one’s own direction. It is the “means and wisdom to win a better life”, as a Japanese author writes in the book The Power of Insensitivity. According to him, the world will be better if we focus on the major goals and stay insensitive to anything else.
____23____ One of the important reasons is that behind insensitivity is strong self-awareness or self-confidence. Knowing yourself is difficult, but knowing yourself correctly is undoubtedly an excellent ability. One of the qualities shared by many successful people is: they all clearly know where their strengths are, what they want, and what direction to go.
To practice insensitivity, the first step is to avoid overthinking. Resist the urge to overanalyze situations, and redirect your focus towards actionable steps within your control. Secondly, don’t pay too much attention to the ups and downs of life at the moment. Rather, you should be looking forward. Additionally, set clear boundaries. ____24____ Remember not to get too involved in other people’s business and set limits that keep you safe from outside pressures.
As a unique wisdom of life, the power of insensitivity gives completely new inspiration to modern people. Once you become a bit “blunt” and slow down the pace, you will feel more comfortable.
A. Everyone can obtain the ability to be insensitive.
B. That’s where the need to be insensitive comes from.
C. It emphasizes determination when it comes to difficulties.
D. Avoid focusing too much on what others are doing or thinking.
E. Regarding relationships, learn to view the problem as two parts.
F. Being a highly sensitive person can come with many challenges.
G. Why can insensitivity allow a person to better adapt in a competitive environment?

____25____, but the pursuit of dreams was never encouraged — leaving me to write secretly in my room. Life progressed and an interest in interior design (室内设计) surfaced in my teens. However, at my parents’ insistence, I enrolled in secretarial (文秘) school and worked in that area for twenty years. At 39, I felt a growing boredom and a desire for a more creative life.
____26____. I crammed two years of work into nine months to ensure that I received my diploma (文凭) for my fortieth birthday. I met my self-set deadline with twelve days to spare.
The next step was to get some hands-on experience at a design firm. A visit to a newly opened interiors showroom ushered me into a dream job that opened more opportunities for me than I could have ever imagined. I worked as a decorating consultant (咨询师) at the showroom and I knew: ____27____.
Opportunity knocked at my door in 1997. I peeked at the possibility of writing a decorating column (专栏) for a woman’s magazine. The editor liked the idea and the monthly column debuted (首发) in February 1998. I realized that I was involved in doing something I dreamed of as a child. To master the finer skills, I signed up for a freelance (自由撰稿) writing course. Encouraging feedback from the teachers gave me the confidence to post my work for publication on the Internet. ____28____. From around the world, people emailed to say that they identified with my experience to redefine myself and pursue (追求) my dream. Some even asked for advice. Soon, this hobby developed into a passion. I now write two regular columns and my website is under construction.
My family tells me that I look younger and seem more energetic. It can be explained: ____29____. On my journey, I have learned that it is never too late to pursue and live your dream.
A. I am doing what I love
B. It is never too old to learn
C. As a child, I dreamed of becoming a writer
D. I was on my way to creating the career I dreamed of
E. So I signed up for a two-year interior-decorating course

4. What made the author finally decide to take the course?

B. her story was attractive to the readers
C. the agent promised her that she’d sign her
D. she wanted to seize the chance of publication

11 What message does the last paragraph convey (传达)?
A. Frozen dim sum can taste just as good as in restaurants.
B. Shared lifestyle can keep love alive when words fail.
C. The author’s cooking couldn’t equal the tea-house’s.
D. The author’s mother couldn’t look after her forever.
D 9. A 10. B 11. B

C 13. B 14. D 15. A
根据第二段的“We must remind ourselves that any form of learning technology should also be guided.(我们必须提醒自己,任何形式的学习技术都应该受到引导)”和“While technology can positively impact learning outcomes, it may be even more effective for some students if it’s teacher-led and integrated into a well-designed course.(虽然科技可以对学习结果产生积极影响,但如果由老师主导并将其整合到设计良好的课程中,对一些学生来说可能会更有效)”可知,教育技术一方面应当处于指导之下,另外也要与精心安排的课程相结合。
根据第四段中“Students may struggle if a teacher fails to teach the basic knowledge of the tools.(如果教师不教授工具的基础知识,学生可能会遇到困难)”以及第五段中“Students taught how to use multiple learning technologies effectively have a great advantage.(学会有效使用多种学习技术的学生具有很大的优势)”可知,教育者应该帮助学生掌握在线技术。
根据最后一段中“Technology, when integrated and balanced properly with the course and with student needs, can make us more effective as educators.(当技术与课程和学生需求相结合和平衡时,可以使我们成为更有效的教育者)”可知,作者认为如果正确合理地利用教育技术,益处是非常明显的。
第二段“These tools, combined with guidance, can offer good instruction, practice and motivation... it may be even more effective for some students if it’s teacher-led and integrated into a well-designed course.(这些工具结合引导,能提供良好的教学、练习和激励…… 故选A项。
B 17. D 18. A 19. C
根据第二段中“Experts have found that when music stimulates mood (情绪) and motivation, students are able to learn more and to better demonstrate (展现) their knowledge. (专家们发现,当音乐stimulates情绪和动力时,学生能够学习更多,并能更好地展现他们的知识)”可知,此处指的应是音乐激发了情绪和动力,所以才能让学生学得更多,并更好地展现知识,因此“stimulates”应表示“激发,激励”,与“Inspires”意思相近。故选B项。
【17题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“One US study compared students who took a test to soft music with those who took the test under silent conditions. The study found that students taking a test to music not only completed more questions within a set time but also answered more questions correctly. Music has been further linked to improvements in memory and recall. (美国的一项研究对比了在轻柔音乐背景下参加测试的学生和在安静环境中参加测试的学生。研究发现,听着音乐参加测试的学生不仅在规定时间内完成了更多题目,而且答对的题目也更多。音乐还被进一步证实与记忆力和回忆能力的提升有关联)”以及第三段中“A bit of mood music affects more than just memory and recall when students hit the books. Music can also relieve stress related to school. (学生们埋头苦读时,一点能调动情绪的音乐所产生的影响不仅仅是作用于记忆力和回忆能力。音乐还能缓解与学业相关的压力)”可知,音乐能帮助学生提升答题正确率、改善记忆与回忆能力,还可以缓解与学业有关的压力,这些均属于对大脑功能的积极影响,即音乐可以改善大脑功能。故选D项。
【18题详解】
推理判断题。纵览全文,并根据第二段中“One US study compared students who took a test to soft music with those who took the test under silent conditions. (美国的一项研究对比了在轻柔音乐背景下参加测试的学生和在安静环境中参加测试的学生)”以及第三段中“Scientists have learned that music engages the autonomic nervous system (自主神经系统), which not only controls the unconscious functions of the body but also influences emotions (情感). (科学家们已经发现,音乐能够作用于自主神经系统,该系统不仅控制着身体的无意识功能,还会影响情感)”可知,文章通过介绍美国的一项研究结果和科学家们的研究发现,来阐述音乐对学习的影响,因此,文章主要是通过呈现事实的方式来行文的。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Actually, the best approach (方法) may depend on the students themselves. Listening to music during study time may not mean a guaranteed (保证的) A for all students, but those who find it helpful should be allowed to plug in their headphones (耳机). (实际上,最佳方法可能取决于学生自身。在学习时听音乐未必能保证所有学生都得A,但那些觉得这样有帮助的学生应该被允许戴上耳机。)”可知,最后一段主要是关于对在学习时听音乐这件事的建议。故选C项。

Highly sensitive person, or HSP, is a term coined by psychologist Elaine Aron. ____21____
The power of insensitivity can be interpreted as “sluggish (迟缓的) power”.
F 21. B 22. C 23. G 24. D
根据前文“Highly sensitive person, or HSP, is a term coined by psychologist Elaine Aron. According to research, in every five people, there’s one HSP. (高敏感者,简称HSP,是心理学家伊莱恩·阿伦创造的一个术语。根据研究,每五个人中就有一个高敏感人群。)”以及后文“HSPs have strong self-consciousness; they may struggle to adapt to new circumstances, demonstrate seemingly inappropriate emotional responses in social situations, and easily become uncomfortable in response to light, sound or certain physical sensations. (高敏感人群自我意识强;他们可能难以适应新环境,在社交场合表现出看似不恰当的情绪反应,并且很容易对光线、声音或某些身体感觉做出不舒服的反应。)”可知,前文提出每五个人中就有一个高敏感人群,后文描述了HSP的一些特点,如强烈的自我意识、难以适应新环境、在社交场合表现出看似不适当的情绪反应等。故设空处应该对这些挑战进行总结概括。F选项“Being a highly sensitive person can come with many challenges.(作为一个高度敏感的人会面临许多挑战。)”
根据前文“HSPs have strong self-consciousness; they may struggle to adapt to new circumstances, demonstrate seemingly inappropriate emotional responses in social situations, and easily become uncomfortable in response to light, sound or certain physical sensations. (高敏感人群自我意识强;他们可能难以适应新环境,在社交场合表现出看似不恰当的情绪反应,并且很容易对光线、声音或某些身体感觉做出不舒服的反应。)”可知,HSP人群面临着诸多挑战。B选项“That’s where the need to be insensitive comes from.( 这就是需要不敏感性的原因所在)”与前文关于HSP面临的挑战相呼应,指出“不敏感性”是解决HSP人群面临挑战的措施,同时引出了下文对不敏感性的讨论。故选B。
根据前文“The power of insensitivity can be interpreted as “sluggish (迟缓的) power”. Usually, people associate “insensitivity” with something bad, but insensitivity does not equal dullness. (不敏感的力量可以解释为“迟钝的力量”。通常,人们把“不敏感”和不好的事情联系在一起,但不敏感并不等于迟钝。)”可知,此处提到不敏感性被视为一种“迟钝的力量”,人们通常把“不敏感”和不好的事情联系在一起。而“迟钝的力量”即不敏感性是解决HSP人群面临挑战的措施,因此后文应该对其真正的含义进行解释。C选项“It emphasizes determination when it comes to difficulties.(当遇到困难时,它强调决心)”强调当遇到困难时,“不敏感性”强调的是决心,与后文的“That is, calmly facing the setbacks and downtime in life and firmly moving towards one’s own direction. (就是坦然面对生活中的挫折和停歇,坚定地朝着自己的方向前进。)”在面对生活中的挫折和低谷时,能够冷静地面对并坚定地走向自己的方向相呼应。C选项中的it指代前文的The power of insensitivity,与前后文形成呼应,符合语境。故选C。
根据后文“ One of the important reasons is that behind insensitivity is strong self-awareness or self-confidence. (一个重要的原因是,不敏感的背后是强烈的自我意识或自信。)”可知,此处强调不敏感的背后是强烈的自我意识或自信。G选项“Why can insensitivity allow a person to better adapt in a competitive environment?( 为什么不敏感性可以让一个人在竞争环境中更好地适应?)”
D选项“Avoid focusing too much on what others are doing or thinking.( 避免过分关注别人在做什么或想什么)”与前文提到的“设置明确的界限”相呼应。
