Our Favourite Tech Gifts of 2019
When it comes time for the holiday shopping season, we’re extra choosy about the countless technology products that we will buy and give to friends and family. Here’s what impressed editors, reporters and producers the most in 2019.
Lumos Matrix helmet
I recently bought a Lumos Matrix helmet(头盔)(﹩229)with built-in lights to make riding my bike at night a lot safer and less stressful. It’s a regular pain point for bikers like me to make sure careless drivers see you, especially when it’s dark. This does help.
-Matt Mcfarland, Writer
Goodreads app
Although this isn’t a gift, the free Goodreads app is a game changer. At the beginning of 2019, I promised myself I’d read at least one new book every month. I set a goal of 12 books on Goodreads and use it to track my progress, keep a list of books I’m interested in and check out what friends and others on the app were recommending. I read 35 books this year! (That’s up from five books last year.) Goodreads feels like one of the rare feel-good social networks.
-Kaya Yurieff, Tech Reporter
Ember coffee cup
I drink my coffee slowly, so it has routinely cooled by the time I get halfway through it. For my birthday, my mum bought me a cup (﹩99), which keeps my coffee warm until I finish it without reheating. I can also set the temperature I want. It makes my mornings so much easier.
-Millie Dent, Intern

A. It changes some readers’ reading rules.
B. It inspires readers to read more through communication.
C. It limits the number of books a reader can read.

To raise money for restaurant workers who had to stay at home during COVID-19, two brothers, Aiden and Louis Ardine, decided to walk 3,200 miles across America.
Having just arrived on the sands of the Pacific Ocean, Aiden and Louis Ardine have now completed their five-month walk. They had hoped to raise $ 30,000 for some charities (慈善组织) that were helping restaurant workers waiting for lockdown (隔离) to end, but ended up making $ 70,000 — which they gave away to the COCO Fund and the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation.
“This would not have been possible without the help of a huge community of people, whether people were donating or helping us guide our way across the United States.” said Aiden Ardine. “This was surely an adventure full of hope, and it proved people are born good and want to help their neighbors.”
Just like cross-country trips in this nation, their journey was characterized by amazing views, long roads, and helpful strangers: like a man who passed them in the extreme heat of summertime Iowa, before doubling back and giving them a cold drink; or a Nevada campground manager who let them stay for free.
In Utah they had what the naturalist John Muir would have described as an “interview” with a black bear. When rounding a corner in the path, they found themselves within a few feet of it.
When they reached San Francisco, their supporters were waiting for them on the beach. Afterwards they flew home along with their mom who had been there to meet them. After their adventurous stay away from home, we can only imagine she was really feeling proud of her sons.
4. Why did the two brothers collect money?
A. To set up some charities.
B. To help end the lockdown.
C. To complete their five-month walk.
D. To help restaurant workers stuck at home.
5. Which word can best describe the two brothers?
A. Humorous. B. Caring. C. Intelligent. D. Honest.
6. What happened to the brothers in Utah?
A. They met with a bear. B. They were interviewed.
C. They saw a naturalist. D. They were injured in an accident.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A Long Journey B. Walk With Love
C. A Proud Mother D. Adventure With Fun
D 5. B 6. A 7. B

If your children’s Christmas wish lists are hard to distinguish, pity their teachers who have been struggling with confusing schoolwork ever since schools reopened.
“ Younger kids failed to learn letter patterns and formations while older kids lose speed and clearness without regular practice during the shutdown of schools, ” says Sheilagh Blyth, an occupational therapist (治疗专家) who studies handwriting.
Of course, it’s a symptom of a wider problem. As Amanda Spielman, the head of Ofsted ( Office for Standards in Education ), indicated yesterday, handwriting puts an added burden on parents — it’s long been an aspect of children’s school books that they analyse at home.
“ This is a big problem for my almost 10-year-old ”, says one mother. “ When they sent two year’s worth of his books back together, the degradation (退化) was severe and it hasn’t recovered ” .
Another mother worries that her younger son has fallen behind compared with his older brother. “ His handwriting is definitely not where I think it should be, ” she says.
Blyth warns handwriting needs to be practiced regularly and that students need to practise the letter formation and joined-up writing to write well in exams. “ Learning handwriting doesn’t just happen as there are increasingly fewer day-to-day opportunities to write with a pen or pencil, ” says Gill Budgell, an educational consultant who wrote Penpals for Handwriting meant for three to 11-year-olds.
The Write Dance programme is an approach to teaching handwriting that is based on physical movement. Diana Strauss, who runs the programme in the UK with Nicole Barrons, says, “ Whole body movement relaxes the shoulders and the arms and has a positive effect on physical tasks, which handwriting is. ”
Diana is seeing more interest from schools in accessing the Write Dance Programme, which was developed in the 1960s by Ragnhild Oussoren, a Dutch graphologist “ We’ve been busy doing live training sessions, particularly with schools in Wales, ” she adds.
Perhaps there is hope for Father Christmas and those gift wish list after all.
8. Why are children’s Christmas wish lists mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To describe children’s longing for Christmas gifts.
B. To make a comparison between parents and teachers.
C. To introduce the topic of children’s handwriting in crisis.
D. To provide an explanation for children’s bad handwriting.
9. What does the underlined word “ this ” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Schools have long been shut down.
B. Children have recently returned to school.
C. Parents analyze their children’s books at home.
D. Children’s handwriting gets worse on school books.
10. What opinions do Blyth and Gill share in paragraph 6?
A. Good handwriting serves exams.
B. Learning handwriting is difficult.
C. Handwriting is important among 11-year-olds.
D. Regular practice counts in improving handwriting.
11. What can we learn about the Write Dance Programme?
A. It has attracted more attention from schools.
B. It advocates carrying out physical tasks.
C. It was developed by Diana Strauss and Nicole Barrons.
D. Its training sessions have only covered schools in Wales.
C 9. D 10. D 11. A

根据第一段“If your children’s Christmas wish lists are hard to distinguish, pity their teachers who have been struggling with confusing schoolwork ever since schools reopened. (如果你孩子的圣诞愿望清单很难辨认,那就可怜他们的老师吧,自从学校重新开学以来,他们一直在为混乱的作业而挣扎。)”可知,父母无法辨认孩子的圣诞愿望清单,但作者却提及了孩子的老师为作业而纠结,可推测出是由于孩子的字迹不好。因此,作者在这提及圣诞节的愿望清单是为了引出文章的主题:孩子的书写正陷入危机。故选C项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段这位母亲在划线所在句后说的话“When they sent two year’ s worth of his books back together, the degradation (退化) was severe and it hasn’t recovered. (当他们把他两年的书送回来的时候,(笔迹)退化很严重,而且一直没有恢复。)”可知,孩子在书上的笔迹越来越不好,很难在家进行课本分析。因此,划线句中的“This”指代的是,孩子在书上的笔迹变得越来越难看,这是一个大问题。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段中布莱斯的想法“handwriting needs to be practiced regularly(笔迹需要经常练习)”以及吉尔所说的话“Learning handwriting doesn’t just happen as there are increasingly fewer day-to-day opportunities to write with a pen or pencil, (随着每天使用钢笔或铅笔写字的机会越来越少,学习书写并不是偶然的。)”
根据倒数第二段中“Diana is seeing more interest from schools in accessing the Write Dance Programme, which was developed in the 1960s by Ragnhild Oussoren, a Dutch graphologist (笔迹学家). (戴安娜发现,学校对参加“书法舞”项目越来越感兴趣,该项目是由荷兰笔迹学家拉格希尔德·乌索伦(RagnhildOussoren)于20世纪60年代提出的。)”可知,“书法舞”项目吸引了越来越多的学校。故选A项。

Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term “pseudo-working” to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard — he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night — but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she’s doesn’t actually accomplish much.
This phenomenon can be seen on most college campuses. For example, at Dartmouth there was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day, and the students I used to see there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working. The roommate who flips through her chemistry notes on the couch while watching TV is pseudo-working.
By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain’s ability to think clearly and efficiently accomplish the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.
The bigger problem here is that most students don’t even realize that they’re pseudo-working. To them pseudo-working is work—it’s how they’ve always done it and it’s how all of their friends do it. It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it. It not only wastes time, but it’s also mentally tiring.
In fact, the most important skill in becoming a straight-A student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive science research concludes that about fifty minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material integrated per time unit. So how do these students achieve this goal? To understand their secret to success, consider the following simple formula(公式): work accomplished = time spent × intensity of focus.
Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach on the other hand, increases intensity in order to use less time.
12. Which of the following phenomenon is pseudo-working?
A. Tom is busy taking notes while attending a lecture.
B. Mike is sitting at a study lounge in preparation for a final exam quietly.
C. Jack spends a long time in the library on his essay while listening to music.
D. Alice and Sara are sitting on the couch reading their favorite books.
13. Compared with straight-A students, the major problem of most students is that they ________.
A. want to spend more time on study
B. are eager to follow their friends’ way
C. have got used to their study approach
D. are unaware of their pseudo-working
14. What does the underlined word “optimal” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Possible. B. Best. C. Least. D. Accurate.
15. What does the author want to stress by mentioning the formula?
A. The length of time on study counts.
B. Concentration plays a key role in study.
C. Getting work done quickly means everything.
D. Effective study approach is very important.
C 13. D 14. B 15. B
根据第一段中的“The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard — he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night — but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she’s doesn’t actually accomplish much.(伪工作者看起来和感觉都像是一个努力工作的人——他或她在图书馆待很长时间,不怕坚持到深夜——但是,由于缺乏注意力和专注力,他或她实际上并没有取得多大成就。)”
根据第四段中的“The bigger problem here is that most students don’t even realize that they’re pseudo-working.(这里更大的问题是,大多数学生甚至没有意识到他们是在伪工作。)”
根据第五段中的“In fact, the most important skill in becoming a straight-A student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort.(事实上,成为一名全优学生最重要的技能是能够以最少的浪费精力快速完成工作。)” 根据画线词前的“about fifty minutes”和画线词后的“learning period to maximize the material integrated per time unit”可知,这里表示大约50分钟是最佳的学习时间,能够最大化学习效率,optimal意为“最佳的”,与best意思最接近。
根据第五段中的“To understand their secret to success, consider the following simple formula(公式): work accomplished = time spent × intensity of focus.(为了理解他们成功的秘诀,可以考虑以下简单的公式:完成的工作=花费的时间×专注的强度。)”和最后一段中的“The straight-A approach on the other hand, increases intensity in order to use less time.(另一方面,为了使用更少的时间,全有学生会增加注意力集中强度。)”

Dear Simon,
I’m sorry to hear that you argued with your parents over some trifles. It must make you feel upset when family atmosphere turns tense. But don’t worry — such small conflicts are common in families and can be fixed soon.
Here are a few suggestions for you. First, take a deep breath and calm down. Anger often makes things worse, so giving yourself and your parents a little time helps. Second, initiate a gentle talk. You can start by saying “I’m sorry for losing my temper” to break the ice, after which you can share your feelings softly instead of blaming them. They’ll surely understand you better.
I believe your family will get back to harmony soon.

C To complete their five-month walk.
D. To help restaurant workers stuck at home.
5. Which word can best describe the two brothers?

7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A Long Journey B. Walk With Love
C. A Proud Mother D. Adventure With Fun

Jason a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term “pseudo-working” to describe how many of us study.
To them pseudo-working is work—it’s how they’ve always done it, and it’s how all of their friends do it.

A. want to spend more time on study
B. are eager to follow their friends’ way
C. have got used to their study approach
D. are unaware of their pseudo-working
14. What does the underlined word “optimal” mean in paragraph 5?
