Zea Tongeman, a 14-year-old student, who is crazy about the Internet, applied technology to create an application that encourages people to recycle while having fun.
Zea was really inspired when she attended “Little Miss Geek Day”, an event that is aimed at making technology more accessible and appealing to young women and inspiring them to consider technology careers. Soon after, she entered “Apps for Good”, a competition that encourages students to create positive changes through technology. Teaming up with her friend, Jordan Stirbu, she laid the foundations for “Jazzy Recycling”.
The “Jazzy Recycling” application is designed to encourage young people to recycle more, which wins the favor of the youth and turns waste disposal (处理) into a game and helps you find places to recycle. Then you scan what you need to recycle, share it, and get rewards such as shopping vouchers (代金券) and games to be unlocked for what you have recycled.
Making use of the teen enthusiasm for sharing every little aspect of their daily life on social media like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, recycling efforts can be shared too as a fun game among friends, which makes more people take part in recycling activities.
Zea explains why she is addicted to the Internet and how technology has changed her, “I used to think technology was just fixing computers and using smartphones; I have become very tired from just using what is available. I have discovered another side to it — I can make technology of my own.”
In fact, Zea Tongeman has taken the idea of recycling seriously and hopes all her fellow beings would give it a serious thought. This teen girl from the United Kingdom has made use of computer programming to create her own app that would encourage people to go recycling for a better world.
4. What is “Little Miss Geek Day” intended to do?
A. To introduce some young women.

D. It provides varieties of convenient services.
6. What can be inferred from Paragraph 5?
A. Technology does more harm than good.
B. Zea shows interest in computer science.
C. Zea has changed her ideas about technology.
D. Zea used to think technology was of little use.
7. What can we learn from Tongeman’s story?
A. Teenagers have a talent for creating apps.
B. Technology plays a significant role in education.

C.
Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers (青少年). But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son: suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always shut.” Joann a noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14- year- old daughter. “She used to cuddle up (蜷伏) with me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark. “Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something, sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.”
Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what’s on their minds. “In fact, parents are first on the list.” said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. “This completely changes during the teen years.” Riera explained. “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”
Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.
8. “The door to his room is always shut” suggests that the son _______.
A. is always busy with his studies
B. doesn’t want to be disturbed
C. keeps himself away from his parents
D. begins to dislike his parents
9. What troubles Tina and Mark most is that _______.
A. their daughter isn’t as lovely as before
B. they can’t read their daughter’s mind exactly
C. they don’t know what to say to their daughter
D. their daughter talks with them only when she needs help
10. Which of the following best explains” the wall of silence” in the last paragraph?
A. Teenagers talk a lot with their friends.
B. Teenagers do not want to understand their parents.
C. Teenagers do not talk much with their parents.
D. Teenagers talk little about their own lives.
11. What can be learned from the passage?
A. Parents are unhappy with their growing children.
B. Parents have suitable ways to talk with their teenagers.
C. Parents should be patient with their silent teenagers.
D. Parents should try to understand their teenagers.

A vast piece of dark rocky glass littering a Chilean desert has remained a mystery for a decade. Some researchers have assumed that the glass resulted from ancient grass fires, as the region wasn’t always desert. And it’ s been suggested that widespread fires may have burnt hot enough to melt the sandy soil into large thick glassy pieces.
But the new research conducted by Schultz and colleagues found that simple fires were an impossible formation theory. The glass shows evidence of having been twisted, folded, rolled and even thrown while still in molten(熔化的) form. That’s consistent with a large incoming comet (彗星) and an airburst, which would have been accompanied by tornado-force winds. The analysis of the glass made Schultz and colleagues convinced that the grassfire idea didn’t hold water. Through analyzing dozens of samples taken from the glass across the region, they found minerals in the samples which typically appear in temperature over 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit— far hotter than what could be generated by grass fires.
“Those minerals tell us that this object has all the markings of a comet,” said Scott Harris, a planetary geologist and also the co-author of the study. “To have the same minerals we saw in the samples is really powerful evidence that what we’ re seeing is the result of a cometary airburst.”
“More work needs to be done to establish the exact age of the glass,” says Scultz. But the tentative dating puts the impact right around the time when large mammals(哺乳动物) disappeared from the region. It’s too soon to say if there was a causal connection or not. Scultz hopes that further research may help to make the answer come to light.
“There may be lots of these explosion scars out there, but until now we haven’t had enough evidence to make us believe they were truly related to airburst events,” Scultz said. “I think this site provides a pattern which helps improve our impact models and will help identify similar sites elsewhere and reveal the potential risk posed by such events.”
12. What might the rocky glass be formed from according to previous studies?
A. The grass ash.
B. The tiny glassy rocks.
C. The sand of a Chilean desert.
D. The sandy soil of grassy land.
13. How did scientists of the new research figure out the origin of the glass?
A. By testing the melting point of the glass.
B. By tracking the path of tornado-force winds.
C. By analyzing the chemical substance of the glass.
D. By reproducing a scene similar to a cometary airburst.
14 What might be the purpose of Scultz’s future research?
A. To calculate the size of the glass.
B. To confirm the exact time of the impact.
C. To identify potentially dangerous comets.
D. To explore the evolution of large mammals.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A Uncovering the Mystery of Black Glass in a Desert
B. Restoring a Vast Glass Piece on a Chilean Desert
C. A Piece of Rocky Glass Caused by Grass Fires
D. Serious Risks of Comet Explosion Events

Melia and her father had just finished building a tree house in the backyard. Melia wanted to decorate the walls, and instead of buying things, she decided to make her own art.
Melia enjoyed making collages using a combination of photos she had taken and pieces of fabric. For her tree house, she thought she would use pictures from magazines instead. She could collect used magazines from neighbors, so the pictures would be free. And to create a collage of all her favorite things, she could add pretty leaves, and fruits of pine tree from the yard.
For several days, Melia collected bits of nature to use for the collage. She also collected magazines from the neighbors. She piled both at the front door, as her plan was to make the collage over the weekend. Oddly, though she added to the piles each day, many of the leaves were gone, and the pile of magazines was a mess.
“Dad? Mom?” Melia asked. “Have either of you been taking the supplies for my collage off the door?” “Now, why on earth would we do that?” her dad answered with a question. “I don’t know, but what I do know is that someone is spoiling my art project! It’s my mission to find out who and why!” Melia declared.
Who would want to steal this stuff? She had a plan. She cleaned up the rest of the leaves and threw the ruined magazines in the recycling bin. She started collecting old magazines again, hoping to set a trap. Even if she had to stay up all night, Melia was determined to solve the case.
Once she had collected a large pile of magazines, Melia formed several piles at the front door. She placed them close to the window so that she could catch the thief. She asked her parents if she could sleep on the sofa. “I know they’re used magazines, but I need them for my art project. I have to solve this case!”
Melia was determined to catch the thief, but she had a difficult time staying awake. Within a few hours, she nodded off. Just as the sun was rising, a slight sound awoke her.

A is always busy with his studies
B. doesn’t want to be disturbed
C. keeps himself away from his parents
D. begins to dislike his parents

14. What might be the purpose of Scultz’s future research?
A. To calculate the size of the glass.
B. To confirm the exact time of the impact.
C. To identify potentially dangerous comets.
D. To explore the evolution of large mammals.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Uncovering the Mystery of Black Glass in a Desert
B. Restoring a Vast Glass Piece on a Chilean Desert
C. A Piece of Rocky Glass Caused by Grass Fires
D. Serious Risks of Comet Explosion Events
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. A

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Melia ran back into the house, shouting, “It’s a squirrel! Wake up! Come to the tree house and look!”
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Melia looked through the window, and her eyes opened wide! A squirrel was toppling the piles of magazines and using its paws to tear pages. It stuffed the paper in its mouth and ran away. Then, a few minutes later, it was back again to collect more paper! Melia tiptoed outside and watched as the squirrel made its third run. She followed the furry squirrel up the tree and into the tree house. Torn magazine paper and dry leaves littered the floor.
Melia ran back into the house, shouting, “It’s a squirrel ! Wake up! Come to the tree house and look!” Getting up quickly, her parents went to the tree house with Melia. They found a box that Melia had planned to store snacks in was slowly being transformed into a squirrel house! Although Melia’s parents thought the squirrel was cute, having a wild animal in the tree house was not a good idea. They relocated the box nearby so that Melia could watch the squirrel build its nest from a safe place in her tree house. “Case closed!” Melia said, feeling brilliant for having a squirrel neighbor.
