The idea of climbing Everest sickened me.The mountain came to represent the opposite of
everything that I loved and respected about climbing. What had once been the final mountain
climbing goal became the focus of a profit-driven guiding industry.Over the years, the crowds at
Base Camp grew, leaving behind tons of trash.Whenever I was asked whether I'd climb Everest,
my answer was always the same:not interested.
That's probably where my personal Everest story would have ended, were it not for an old
friend and his obsession (with one of the greatest mysteries. In 1999,Thom Pollard began to
explore and found the remains of George Mallory, the celebrated British climber who disappeared
while attempting to be the first to climb Everest. But Mallory's partner,Sandy Irvine, and the
camera he had likely carried, were not found. The mountain climbing world has been wondering
whether they might have reached the top in 1924.
Pollard's story moved me.I began to pack for the climb and expected that our advanced
equipment would make it manageable, perhaps easy.I was wrong. On the highest point on the
planet,I was more tired than I'd ever been in any climbing.Along the way,I continuously tipped
my hat,not just to Mallory and Irvine but to anyone who has the drive to push himself or herself up
this route. My search failed, but I began to reconsider Everest.
I witnessed many climbers, who were much more than just self-centered tourists. We shared
route information, weather forecasts, and family photos-all united around common goals.
I went to Everest to seek Irvine. But in the end,I found something more difficult to get:the
spirit that Irvine and Mallory shared. It was hiding in plain sight, right where it has always been:
inside the brave souls who risk so much to follow in storied adventurers'footsteps up Everest.
24.What was the main reason the author hated climbing Everest?
A.His goal changed.
B It was heavily polluted.
C.It became a money industry.
D.Climbers disturbed its peace
25.Why did the author climb Everest later?
A.He aimed to challenge himself.
B Pollard's story moved him.
C.His friend urged him to go.
D.He followed in Mallory's footsteps.
26.Why did the author tip his hat along the way?
A.To thank other climbers
B.To show his determination.
C.To ease his tiredness.
D To respect the climbers.
27.What's the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Admiration for climbers.
B.Concern about the risk.

Sometimes, the best thing for a penguin is to go with the flow.Magellanic penguins change
their strategy for directing themselves home based on the strength of ocean currents:swimming
almost straight back to their colonies (in calm waters, but following currents when they
are strong-traveling farther but conserving energy, researchers report in PLOS Biology.
From September to February,Magellanic penguins raise their young in coastal colonies of
Chile and Argentina.Adult penguins travel more than 100 kilometers in one trip to find small fish
to feed their babies.Such long ocean journeys require not only a keen sense of direction but skills
in dealing with ocean currents, which can either aid movement-like how sea turtles use currents
for their seasonal movements-or sweep animals off course. While penguins can swim against
strong currents, study coauthor Wilson notes that it's not wise:"Why catch all that fish just to waste
energy swimming against the current?"
To uncover their strategies,Wilson and coworkers monitored 27 adult penguins from
Argentina's San Lorenzo colony using GPS and movement trackers under varying current
conditions.After nearly 30 hours of fishing,their return trips-lasting up to 16 hours-always
began with the penguins pointing directly toward their colonies, but their following path depended
on the day's ocean conditions.
In calm waters, they maintained a nearly straight line. However,in strong currents, they
adopted s-shaped paths following the area's natural current patterns. As currents changed direction
during their journey, they avoided being carried too far off course. These longer trips not only
provided extra fishing opportunities but saved energy, according to estimates of the effort required
to swim at specific speeds.
This behavior suggests penguins assess current strength and direction to select the best paths
to follow.Their ability likely originates from a mix of natural tendency-genetically built rough
guides to the sea-and learning, with young penguins observing and copying adult behavior to
refine their skills.
28.How does the author present the fact in the first paragraph?
A By referring to a report.
B.By explaining a term.
C By giving examples.
D.By comparing data.
29.What determines the penguins'next path to follow according to the research?
A.The distance of fishing trips.
B.The conditions of daily currents.
C.The effort required to swim.
D The length of fishing time.
30.What does the author try to illustrate by montioning"s-shaped paths"in paragraph 4?
A.The method of avoiding strong currents.
B.The consequence of wasting energy.
C.The strategy of adapting to strong currents.
D The opportunity for extra fishing.

You might think that the latcst pop hit is created by a machine rather than a human being.
Actually, gctting artificial intelligencc(AI)to understand many aspects of music is easier said than
donc.Dcscribing things like musical structurc, harmony, and form can be difficult enough when
speaking with somcbody who did not study music theory, let alone a machine.
A new study out of China examines if AI can be taught to recognize some of these features
and then to composc music itself. To do this, they used an AI machine enhanced with a program
called the Harmony-Awarc Hicrarchical Music Transformer(HAT),a system that can turn musical
data into machinc-readable parts and then review those parts for harmony, form, and other musical
qualitics. The systcm was then fed hundreds of pieces of human-composed piano music to learn
what pop music is supposed to sound like.
To sce how well it could perform, the researchers asked the AI to complete a song. They fed
the opcning of Guang Yin De Gu Shi,a real Chinese pop song, into the Al,and then measured how
closcly i was ablc to match the song in terms of generating melodic segments(旋律片段)of
similar length. For good measure, they also gave the same task to two other music-generating AI
machines which were less advanced than HAT.While HAT outperformed its computer rivals(),
the segments it created were disconnected from each other and clearly not human-made,though
they were roughly the same length as those in the human-made tune.
"There is still a huge gap between the HAT-gencrated pieces and the real works,"concluded
the authors, suggesting that,a future study can attempt to create an Al machine that can"improve"
the music it creates to close that gap.
32.What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A.It'6 hard to describe features of music.
B.Pop hits are made by machines now.
C.Al finds music hard to understand.
D.Humans can't compose pop hits.
33.What did the Chinese study focus on?
A.Al's onhancoment with a program.
B.AI's ability to compose piano music.
C.Al's music recognition and composition.D.Al's understanding of Chinese songs.
34.What can we learn about the experiment in Paragraph 3?
A HAT crealed a new Chinese pop song.
B.HAT was compared with two other Als.
C.HAT's segments matched real songs.
D HAT's segments were shorter in length.
35.What do the study authars suggest for the future?

Here is somc good news for thosc hating summer heat-July is national Ice Cream Month!
_36 The order asks peoplc to observe the cntire month or at least the third Sunday of
July with appropriate ceremonies and activities. This,of course, means eating as much ice cream as
possible. Here are some fun ice cream facts.
The first record of milk-based ice cream, made from heated milk and flour, came from
China's Tang dynasty. However, the Arabs are regarded as inventing the modern type, using milk
and sugar in the 9th century.By the 10th century,a delicious frozen treat using milk, cream,
rosewater, dried fruits, and nuts was extremely popular in Baghdad,Damascus, and Cairo.
Europeans discovered the icy treat in the 16th century.37 The dessert was first mentioned
in 1744,when Maryland Governor Thomas Bladen served strawberry ice cream to guests. However,
due to the lack of refrigerators,it was not until 1851 that people could finally get ice cream.
38 An estimated $6 billion is spent annually on the treat, and the number is even
higher if restaurant sales are included.Though California produces the most ice cream, the biggest
fans,on a per capita basis,live in Washington,D.C.,Rhode Island,and Wisconsin.
Most people think their ice cream choice is a function of their taste preference.39
vanilla (ice cream fans are risk-takers who are great at relationships.Strawberry ice cream
enthusiasts are devoted.Coffee fans are likely to be serious and perfectionists.40
A Chocolate fans must be generous.
