Why is April 19 important? A. The price goes up on the day. B. It marks the start of the workshop. C. It is the last day for students to sign up. D. Students can pick instructors on the day. 3. Where do the commuter workshop and the adviser workshop differ? A. Their dates. B. Their learners. C. The total number of meals. D. The places for social activities. B I was on an early morning flight to my hometown. My co-passengers were a mother and her young son. It was a lovely experience watching them laugh, share home-cooked food, and have a good time traveling together — until the boy needed to use the restroom. We were seated in the 10th row, and the restroom was not very far. The boy could cross 9 rows and use the restroom with some instructions from the mother. But the boy had to wait in a short line (3-4 people,10 minutes at most). As the boy was waiting, the mother never took her eyes off him, with a touch of anxiety in her expression. There was little chance that he would not return safely, so I failed to understand her anxiety. I found the courage to ask why she was so anxious. Her reply was simple: “I am the mother”. To be honest, I was not surprised at the scene. This hyper-vigilant care is the nature of New Age parenting, in contrast to (与……形成对比) my growing process. My parents only cared to visit my school for parent-teacher meetings, if they were called so. It was enough for them that I was in school from 8 am to 2 pm. My parents had no idea what I would do in my life, just like I had no idea. To be fair, they had limited (有限的) resources and were mostly concerned to provide us with the basics like clothing and food. The modern idea of child counseling (心理咨询) was nowhere to be seen. When I got poor grades, my father’s only “counseling” was criticizing (批评) my love for basketball. That’s all. When comparing both parenting styles, I believe that children need guidance and space to learn on their own. Maybe the key lies in balance: giving children room to explore with few interventions (干预) to develop their independence and personal growth — something every parent struggles with. 4. What caused the mother’s anxiety during the flight? A. Her seat being far from her son’s. B. Her son’s fear of using the restroom alone. C. Her motherly concern over her son’s safety. D. Her son’s great impatience with the long flight. 5 What does the underlined word “hyper-vigilant” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Relaxed and trusting. B. Watchful and worried. C. Strict and controlling. D. Balanced and supportive. 6. What can we learn from the author’s childhood experience? A. The old parenting style had some limitations. B. His parents cared too much about his growth. C. His parents had already planned a bright future for him. D. Child counseling was unnecessary in the old parenting style. 7. What does the author suggest parents do about parenting? A. Ask other parents for guidance and advice. B. Have regular discussions with their children. C. Give their children guidance and room to grow. D. Avoid comparing their children with other children. C English words tell a lot of stories. To get back to their origins (起源), linguists (语言学家) use the comparative method (comparing similar words in different languages). English is a West Germanic language from the Indo-European family and many words are interrelated. However, there are some English terms known as “proper words” that are found only in English today and have no known relatives in other languages. Here are three examples: Girl: Since the 14th century, gyrle (now “girl”) was used to mean a child without gender distinction Its origins remain unknown. Some linguists have connected it with the Old English word gierela, meaning garment (衣服), suggesting the term may have changed in meaning from “child’s apron” to “child”. Others believe “girl” is connected to words like “boy”, “lass”, and “lad”, though their origins are unclear. Boy: Who (or what) was originally a “boy”? No one knows. In the13th century, a boy was a servant. A century later, the term started being used to mean a male child. The word doesn’t sound Germanic, but it’s not clear whether it was brought into England by the Normans either. Dog: “Dog” comes from Old English dogs, an uncommon term used in Middle English for a strong dog like the mastiff. In Old English, hund was the common Germanic word until the term docga took its place almost completely in the16th century. Now, “hound” means specifically a hunting dog. So far, nobody has been able to find the origin of docga. Probably the dog it originally described became popular enough to be connected with the idea of “dog” in itself, but this doesn’t explain where the word came from. The origin stories of these “proper words” could teach us a lot about ancient people, how they thought, and how they named the things around them. So, more research is badly needed. 8. What does the underlined word “interrelated” in paragraph 1 mean? A. Created. B. Connected. C. Accepted. D. Improved. 9. What is a possible origin of the word “girl”? A. A name for a baby boy. B. A Germanic word for gyrle. C. A term for a young servant. D. A word meaning garment. 10. What was a possible reason for docga becoming the common word for “dog”? A. The old word hund for “dog” got a bad meaning. B. Linguists chose to use docga as the standard-term. C. People came to love the dogs named docga a lot. D. Docga was easier to spell than other words for “dog”. 11. What is the text mainly about? A. The origins of some “proper words” in English. B. The role of “smart” linguists in language study. C. The development of the English language. D. The history of some Old English terms. D Text messaging, or simply “texting”, which allows people to send and receive messages on mobile phones, becomes very popular today. The advantages of texting are obvious. Texting helps to save money. If you have a few words to greet your families and friends on their birthdays or on some important festivals, sending messages can be cheaper than phone calling. Texting helps to save time. Even if you want to send a message to 100 people, you can do it one second. Texting helps you to “talk” to someone when he is too busy to answer the phone. Texting can also help you to “talk” to someone secretly if you don’t want others to hear what you are talking on the phone. These advantages are so amazing that many people are crazy about it. They hold mobile phones in hands all day long, send dozens of messages each day, and even text while driving or walking. However, texting has its disadvantages. Junk messages may come into your mobile phone box now and then. When your phone box gets too full, you can’t receive any more messages. You may therefore miss some important information. What’s more, if you don’t do texting properly, for example texting while driving or walking, it can be dangerous. It can cause injuries and even death. It was reported that about 6,000 people were killed and half a million were injured for this reason each year. In Fort Lee, a small town in New Jersey, USA, three people died because they walked into traffic while texting in 2011. Two researchers at Stony Brook University, New York found that texters are 60% more probably to have an accident than others. When people are texting, they don’t notice other people or things around them. To reduce traffic accidents, all drivers of the UN are now not allowed to text while driving. About 32 countries have passed laws restricting the use of mobile phones while driving. Texting is a wonderful way of communication. However, only when we use it properly, can we fully enjoy the fun it brings. 12. How many advantages of texting are mentioned in the passage? A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five. 13. What did the researchers at Stony Brook University find? A. 6,000 people were killed and injured. B. Texters are easier to have an accident. C. Texting is a good way of communication. D. Many people text to greet families and friends. 14. The underlined word restricting probably means _________. A. not allowing B. not telling C. enjoying D. making 15. This passage is written to tell us that __________. A. we should do less texting B. texting has many advantages C. texting is better than phone calling D. we should do texting properly How to develop a positive attitude Perhaps you have heard somebody say this before “Attitude is everything.” It is true indeed. 5. What does the underlined word “hyper-vigilant” in paragraph 3 mean? C 5. B 6. A 7. 根据文章第二段中的“As the boy was waiting, the mother never took her eyes off him, with a touch of anxiety in her expression. There was little chance that he would not return safely, so I failed to understand her anxiety. I found the courage to ask why she was so anxious. Her reply was simple: “I am the mother”.(当男孩在等待时,母亲从未离开过他的视线,脸上带着一丝焦虑。他返回时平安无事的可能性极大,所以我无法理解她的焦虑。我鼓起勇气问她为什么如此焦虑。她的回答很简单:“我是母亲”)”可知,男孩去上卫生间,母亲的视线一直在孩子身上,因为她担心自己的孩子不能安全归来,因此母亲的焦虑源于她作为母亲对孩子的安全担忧。故选C项。 【5题详解】 词句猜测题。根据文章第二段中的“As the boy was waiting, the mother never took her eyes off him, with a touch of anxiety in her expression. There was little chance that he would not return safely, so I failed to understand her anxiety. I found the courage to ask why she was so anxious. Her reply was simple: “I am the mother”.(当男孩在等待时,母亲从未离开过他的视线,脸上带着一丝焦虑。 第四段中“My parents only cared to visit my school for parent-teacher meetings, if they were called so.( 我的父母只是在需要参加家长会的时候才会来学校一趟,而且通常也只是来参加而已)”以及第五段中“To be fair, they had limited (有限的) resources and were mostly concerned to provide us with the basics like clothing and food. The modern idea of child counseling (心理咨询) was nowhere to be seen.  (公平地说,他们手头资源有限,主要任务就是为我们提供基本的生活物资,比如衣物和食物。当时根本就没有儿童心理咨询这一概念)”可知,作者的父母的养育方式有一些局限性,他们主要关心的是提供基本的生活需求,而现代的儿童心理咨询在当时并不存在。故选A项。 根据文章最后一段中的“When comparing both parenting styles, I believe that children need guidance and space to learn on their own. Maybe the key lies in balance: giving children room to explore with few interventions (干预) to develop their independence and personal growth — something every parent struggles with.(在比较两种育儿方式时,我认为孩子们需要引导和学习的空间。也许关键在于平衡:在很少干预的情况下给孩子空间去探索,以发展他们的独立性和个人成长——这是每个父母都在努力做到的)”可知,作者认为,在比较两种养育方式时,关键在于平衡:给予孩子探索的空间且在很少干预下培养他们的独立性和个人成长。由此推知,作者建议父母给孩子指导和成长的空间。故选C项。 C English words tell a lot of stories. A The old word hund for “dog” got a bad meaning. B 9. D 10. C 11. 根据文章第一段中的“English is a West Germanic language from the Indo-European family and many words are interrelated. However, there are some English terms known as “proper words” that are found only in English today and have no known relatives in other languages. 根据第二段中“Some linguists have connected it with the Old English word gierela, meaning garment (衣服) ,suggesting the term may have changed in meaning from “child’s apron” to “child”. (一些语言学家将其与古英语词汇“gierela”联系起来,该词意为“衣服”。他们认为这个术语的含义可能已经从“孩子的围裙”转变为“孩子”本身)”可知,一些语言学家认为“girl”可能与起源于是一个意为“衣服”的词。故选D项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“Probably the dog it originally described became popular enough to be connected with the idea of “dog” in itself, but this doesn’t explain where the word came from.(或许当初所描述的那种狗已经变得相当流行,以至于人们自然而然地将“狗”这个词与这种狗本身联系了起来,但这并不能解释这个词的起源)”可知,最初被描述的狗变得足够受欢迎,以至于与“狗”这个概念本身联系在一起,由此产生了dog这个词。 根据第一段中“However, there are some English terms known as “proper words” that are found only in English today and have no known relatives in other languages. Here are three examples(然而,有一些英语词汇被称为“专用词汇”,它们仅存在于英语中,且在其他语言中没有类似的词形对应。以下是三个这样的例子)”以及通读全文可知,文章探讨了英语中一些被称为“专有名词”的词汇,这些词汇只在英语中存在,且起源不明。文章以“girl”、“boy”和“dog”为例,讲述了它们可能的起源和演变。因此,文章的主要内容是关于英语中一些“专有词汇”的起源。由此可知,选项A“The origins of some “proper words” in English.(英语中一些“专有词汇”的起源)”与文章主旨相符。故选A项。 D Text messaging, or simply “texting”, which allows people to send and receive messages on mobile phones, becomes very popular today. A. we should do less texting B. texting has many advantages C. texting is better than phone calling D. we should do texting properly 【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第二段中“Texting helps to save money. Texting can also help you to “talk” to someone secretly if you don’t want others to hear what you are talking on the phone.”(发短信有助于省钱。 根据第四段中“Two researchers at Stony Brook University, New York found that texters are 60% more probably to have an accident than others. When people are texting, they don’t notice other people or things around them.”(纽约石溪大学的两名研究人员发现,发短信的人发生事故的可能性比其他人高出60%。 根据第四段中“To reduce traffic accidents, all drivers of the UN are now not allowed to text while driving.”(为了减少交通事故,联合国所有司机现在都不允许在开车时发短信。) 故选A项。 根据文章大意以及最后一段“Texting is a wonderful way of communication. However, only when we use it properly, can we fully enjoy the fun it brings.”(发短信是一种很好的交流方式。 How to develop a positive attitude Perhaps you have heard somebody say this before “Attitude is everything.” It is true indeed. First I needed ten members to apply, but most students doubted if a book club could be fun. I spent weeks talking to classmates during breaks, sharing my favorite novels and promising lively discussions. Then came the challenge of finding a meeting place. Three teachers had turned me down, and it was Ms. Lee who brought me hope by offering her empty classroom. The real test came at our first meeting -- only three students showed up. I nearly gave up but I remembered why I started -- to build a space for sharing stories. The next day, I posted flyers with snacks and a “mystery book swap” event, which attracted twenty students to join us the following week. Now, our club has 35 members, and we even host inter-class reading competitions. The best part? Seeing how books bring us together! 词汇积累 成立、建立:start → set up/ establish 怀疑:doubt if→ harbor doubts about/ be skeptical about/ be incredulous that 出现:show up→ turn up/ put in an appearance 组织、举办:host→ organize 2. Three teachers had turned me down, and it was Ms. Lee who brought me hope by offering her empty classroom. After three teachers rejected my request, Ms. Lee finally offered her empty classroom, whose support gave me new hope. 1】I spent weeks talking to classmates during breaks, sharing my favorite novels and promising lively discussions.
