In the fall of 2022, my husband got a chance to spend three years in Nanjing teaching international law. When we got to China, I began to study Chinese. It was really hard for me to speak Putonghua.
For me, it wasn’t the grammar. “I want to buy this book” is pretty straightforward: “我想买这本书”. And I could memorize lots of Chinese characters (hanzi). However, many words sound alike but mean something 1 . Take 2 “jiàn” for example, it always leaves me guessing—the warship (舰) or the arrow (箭), to meet (见) or to build (建)?
Then, somewhere along the way, I started talking to people around me in Chinese. I tried to communicate with the women in the markets about how to cook vegetables. Sometimes I talked to taxi drivers about the songs on the radio. Gradually, I could listen to songs and understand the lyrics without 3 . I finally reached the point where I could enjoy living in China without using a dictionary.
Now, as our year is up and we pack up to leave, I’m finding my Chinese 4 . I search Baidu maps in Chinese, keep my mobile phone Contacts in Chinese, and send WeChat messages to Chinese friends in Chinese. But mostly, I don’t worry about my performance anymore and enjoy every experience of speaking Chinese. Every language is different. For me, finally, I’ve learned that the key to learning Chinese is 5 living in China.

Dear Mom and Dad,
Since you told me about the move, I’ve been thinking. I’ve been thinking a lot.
You say this change is good. I respectfully disagree with it. I’ve decided that 6 should go. I have my reasons, and they’re pretty good.
It doesn’t snow in the desert. There are no lakes there, either. 7 will we do during the holidays—roll around in the sand?
The chart on our wall shows 8 I’ve grown since I was little. We can’t keep track of it if we leave. If I go to a new school, everyone will already have their own friend groups. Where would I fit in?
Speaking of school, do you think it’s a good idea 9 in the middle of the year? My grades will suffer (变差).
There you have it. I’m sure you can see that it’s just not a choice for me. If you really have to go, we can work 10 out first, and give it a try. I’ll live with Jessica’s family, and maybe you can visit me on weekends. Think about it.
Love,
Allison

On September 25, China’s Ye Shiwen won a silver medal in the women’s 200m individual medley (个人混合泳) at the Hangzhou Asian Games. This time, winning a gold medal was no longer the most important thing to her.
“Although I was a little bit slower than I expected, I am still very happy to take a silver here. People cheered for me and gave me a lot of encouragement,” she said.
Ye comes from Hangzhou. She began to shine at the 2012 London Olympics. She won the women’s 400m individual medley and broke the world record.
However, her performance (表现) waned at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio deJaneiro. At that time she was under heavy stress. She said, “I was afraid of failing and I was troubled with my health problems.” As a result, she won eighth in the 200m final and didn’t get the chance into the 400m final.
She took a year-long break from swimming and became a student at Tsinghua University, studying law. During that year, Ye’s love for swimming never died, so she returned to the pool. She won silver medals in both the 200m and 400m medley at the 2019 World Championships.
With the Asian Games taking place in her hometown, Ye was encouraged to take part in competitions again. “Before, I had to tell myself all the time ‘you are very strong’, but this time I don’t need to do that,” said Ye, who appeared with a more relaxed and happy look. “I still love swimming very much, but winning is not the most important thing any more,” added Ye. “Now I enjoy myself in the pool and I like the atmosphere (氛围) of competition.”
No longer only caring about victory, Ye gets a sense of calm and confidence. “I have already found my problems to work on, and I will try to improve myself in the coming winter training,” she said.

Today Eva’d head back to the half-pipe (单板U行滑雪场地), the packed-snow structure built especially for snowboarders.
Her coach, Jeff, had told her, “If you want to compete again, you’ll have to get back in the half-pipe.” Eva sighed. She hadn’t been in it since she’d fallen last winter.
After breakfast, Dad took Eva to the mountain. When she got to the half-pipe, it was empty. Her eyes followed the smooth sides, and she blinked (眨眼), not wanting to remember
But the memory pushed out along with her breath. Last winter, Eva had planned to do an “eggflip” (空翻), a special trick at the top of the pipe. As she’d started the flip (翻转), she’d misjudged the distance. Her shoulder and helmeted head had slammed into the icy packed snow before she started to fall downward. It seemed as if she’d rolled and bounced forever, her snowboard twisting hard against her knees the whole time.
As Eva stood there remembering, the half-pipe blurred (变模糊) in front of her. She breathed in cold air heavily and backed away.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Jeff said.
“I can’t, Jef,” Eva shouted, feeling dizzy. “I thought I could, but I can’t.”
She didn’t wait for a response and rode down the slope.
Days went by. Ashamed, Eva didn’t return to the half-pipe, nor Jeff’s phone calls.
The weekend of the competition, Eva stayed with her aunt, On Saturday morning they were busy painting, but when the clock struck 9:00 a. m. , Eva’s mind was elsewhere. She knew that the snowboarders were getting ready.
Throughout the day, Eva kept glancing at her watch.
Ten-thirty. Compulsory (规定动作) in the half-pipe competition.
Noon. Break for lunch.
One-thirty. Freestyle.
Not until she knew it was all over could Eva relax. But her heart felt heavy as she went to bed that night.
“How was your weekend?” Mom asked when she picked up Eva on Sunday.
“Good,” said Eva, but she was thinking about the competition.
“Jeff called,” Mom said, as if reading Eva’s mind. “I left the results by the phone.”
Eva nodded, grateful that Mom didn’t say more. Eva brought the list to her room and closed the door.
Her friend Sherry had come first in compulsory, second in freestyle.
That could have been me, Eva thought. Tears filled her eyes. Why did she have to be afraid? So what if she’d fallen? That was how you learned.
Eva threw the list across the room.
The next afternoon, Eva went snowboarding. She was enjoying the smooth rhythm as she glided down the slopes. On one run, Eva stopped and looked across the mountain toward the trees that hid the half-pipe. The competition was over. The snow season was nearly over, She could try again next year. But I don ’t want to wait any longer, thought Eva.
36.What did Jeff tell Eva to do in order to compete again?
A.Improve her freestyle skills. B.Take a break from snowboarding.
C.Win a local competition first. D.Get back in the half-pipe.
37.Why didn’t Eva return Jeff’s phone calls?
A.She got badly hurt and felt dizzy.
B.She was ashamed about not beating her fear.
C.She had decided to quit snowboarding.
D.She was angry with Jeff for pushing her too hard.
38.How did Eva feel during the competition weekend?
A.She was excited about staying with her aunt.
B.She was completely relaxed and focused on painting.
