While visiting a school for the blind in Old Delhi, India, a 14-year-old boy named Yash Mehta observed that none of the students were using digital braille readers. Priced between $2,000 and $20,000, these devices are unaffordable for most students, and they often have mechanical failures because of their complex and costly components. Rather than accept this reality, Mehta decided to try and make his own version, and after a lot of research and testing a few models, he succeeded.
Since that day in India, Mehta began moving towards his goal by working with teachers and students at the Blind Relief Association in New Delhi. There, he was able to build a model and test it with the students. “I was deeply moved when the first student, Himanshu, placed his finger on the braille cell during a test trial and accurately identified the characters I had input. Seeing that brought literal tears to my eyes, as the breakthrough highlighted the impact and value of my project and inspired me to go further,” said Mehta.
Having always been passionate about engineering, the young inventor found the hardware aspects of the project manageable. However, programming the device to transform input text into braille was something he had to teach himself. Ultimately, Mehta overcame this challenge by developing his skills and understanding of programming.
The device simulates braille letter patterns by using a set of six rotating (旋转的) motors that gently press against the user’s fingers. These motors are connected to an Arduino, an open-source electronics platform known for its user-friendly hardware and programmable software. Letter information is then input into the device, translated to braille and sent to the motors. Users can read the braille output with 86% accuracy by resting their fingers just above the motor output.
Mehta achieved his goal of creating a device that costs only about $20 to make and could be sold for around $35. He is currently working with two schools to refine the design of the machine for production.
4. Why did Yash Mehta want to create a new version of braille readers?
A. He had a real passion for researching and making new things.
B. He hoped to make more profits from selling brand-new products.
C. The components of the braille readers available were hard to produce.
D. The braille readers available were too expensive and often broke down.
5. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Character input. B. The test trial.
C. Himanshu’s success. D. The braille cell.
6. What difficulty did Yash Mehta come across in his project?
A. Transforming braille text. B. Managing the hardware parts.
C. Learning programming skills. D. Understanding braille systems.
7. What is Paragraph 4 of the text mainly about?
A. The design of the braille motors. B. The working principle of the device.
C. The approach to building the device. D. The function of the Arduino platform.

On a soulless roundabout at a motorway crossroads, next door to a Burger King and opposite McDonald’s, stands a newcomer to the world of fast-food in France: a boulangerie, or French bakery. With sufficient parking, the Boulangerie offers its car-borne customers a variety of choices. The boulangerie is traditionally a feature of the village square or high street. Yet now, it is taking off as an out-of-town drive-in or drive-to experience.
It is an unexpected time for the baguette (法式面包) to spread, let alone on the country’s city edges. Rising energy and flour prices have pushed the price of the humble stick over the symbolic one euro in some places. Older folks still recall the time in the 1970s when it went for one French franc. Yet in 2022 more new boulangeries opened their doors in France than closed, according to Altares, a research group. Across the country 2,538 new bakeries set up shop last year. In the Paris region, the fastest growth has taken place not in the capital’s built-up walkable centre, but its low-density (低密度) outer suburbs — meeting the need of the motorist.
Marie Blachere, a chain of boulangeries which started their business on car-accessible edge-of-town sites, now has over 700 outlets across France; 70 opened last year alone. It provides industrial-scale kitchens for hand-made baguettes, made from dough prepared, kneaded and baked on the site, a condition in France for use of the label boulangerie. With turnover of over €550m, it ranks as one of the top ten fast-food chains in France. In the city of Chartres, Cyril Avert boulangerie serves baguettes to motorists at the wheel, as a pure drive-through service. So does Jules & John, in over 20 towns in France.
The drive-in or drive-to fashion is not welcome news for the boulangeries on narrow town-centre streets, many of which are struggling with rising costs. But it does reflect a stubborn fact about France, which those who govern from its city centres ignore. In 2021, 82% of French households owned at least one vehicle, and many in outer suburbs and semi-rural parts depend on it for work. The French remain as attached to their daily, or even twice-daily, baguette as they do to their use of the car.
8. Who are the recently-opened baguette bakeries targeted for?
A. New arrivals. B. Hurrying drivers.
C. Leisurely tourists. D. Fashionable youths.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Brands of boulangeries. B. Profits from boulangeries.
C. Examples of boulangerie expansion. D. Conditions for opening a new boulangerie.
10. What’s the author’s attitude towards the drive-in or drive-to practice?
A. Objective. B. Approving. C. Dismissive. D. Doubtful.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Baguette and vehicle: hand in hand
B. Boulangeries: suffering rocketing price
C. Boulangeries: springing up in unlikely places
D. Baguettes: the symbol of traditional French cuisine
D
Philosophers have a bad reputation for expressing themselves in a dry and boring way. The ideals for most philosophical writing are precision, clarity, and the sort of conceptual analysis that leaves no hair un-split.
There is nothing wrong with clarity, precision, and the like — but this isn’t the only way to do philosophy. Outside academic journals, abstract philosophical ideas are often expressed through literature, cinema, and song. There’s nothing that grabs attention like a good story, and there are some great philosophical stories that delight and engage, rather than putting the reader to sleep.
One of the great things about this is that, unlike formal philosophy, which tries to be very clear, stories don’t wear their meanings on their sleeve — they require interpretation, and often express conflicting ideas for the reader to wrestle with.
Consider what philosophers call the metaphysics (形而上学) of race — an area of philosophy that explorers the question of whether or not race is real. There are three main positions that you can take on these questions. You might think that a person’s race is written in their genes (a position known as “biological realism”). Or you might think of race as socially real, like days of the week or currencies (“social constructionism”). Finally, you might think that races are unreal — that they’re more like leprechauns (一种魔法精灵) than they are like Thursdays or dollars (“anti-realism”).
A great example of a story with social constructionist taking on race is George Schuyler’s novel Black No More. In the book, a Black scientist named Crookman invents a procedure that makes Black people visually indistinguishable from Whites. Thousands of African Americans flock to Crookman’s Black No More clinics and pay him their hard-earned cash to undergo the procedure. White racists can no longer distinguish those people who are “really” White from those who merely appear to be White. In a final episode, Crookman discovers that new Whites are actually a whiter shade of pale than those who were born that way, which kicks off a trend of sunbathing to darken one’s skin-darkening it so as to look more While.
Philosophically rich stories like this bring more technical works to life. They are stories to think with.
12. What does the author think of philosophical stories?
A. The meaning behind is very obvious.
B. They are extremely precise and formal.
C. They often cause conflicts among readers.
D. They are engaging and inspire critical thinking.
13. Which category might “Christmas” fall into according to paragraph 4?
A. Social constructionism. B. Anti-realism.
C. Biological realism. D. Literary realism.
14. What is Black No More in paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Racial issues caused by skin colors.
B. A society view on race and self-image.
C. Black people accepted by the white society.
D. The origin of sun bathing among white people.
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. Stories Made Easy B. Stories to Think with
C. Positions in Philosophy D. Nature of Philosophical Writing
Which brand of chocolate chip makes the best tasting cookies? Is the tree outside your window causing your runny nose? If you want to answer questions like these, you’ll probably need to do some testing. ____16____. In order to figure out the real answers to such questions, you’ll need to test your ideas in a fair way. The considerations that go into making “everyday” tests fair are the same ones used in scientific experiments.
Comparing outcomes. To be confident in test results, it’s generally important to have something to compare them to. So, for example, in your cookie test, you’d want to actually compare batches(批次)of cookies made with different brands of chocolate chips. ___17___—just to make sure that the chocolate chips are really making a difference in the cookies’ taste. In experiments, whatever you are comparing your test results to is sometimes called the control group. But don’t confuse the control group with …
Controlling variables. ___18___. Is it really the chocolate chip brand, and not the baking temperature, that makes one cookie taste better than another? Therefore, you’ll need to control variables—that is, try to keep everything about the test comparisons the same, except for the variables you’re interested in.
Avoiding bias. No matter how hard we humans try to be objective, bias can sneak into our observations and judgments. For example, your cookie tasters might be hungry and so the first cookie they eat could seem tastier to them than the rest. To avoid such potential sources of bias, you’d want to set up the test so that different testers taste the cookies in different orders. ____19____.
Distinguishing chance from real differences. All sorts of subtle things that you either don’t or cannot control can affect the outcome of a test. Some cookies in a batch might have wound up with a few less chocolate chips than others. The oven might have heated unevenly and burnt a few cookies. ___20___—but in small ways. So how to avoid this? Sample size is important. The larger your sample size, the more likely it is close to the fact.
A. But all tests are not created equal
B. Components of the testing should be adjusted
C. All of these random factors will affect the outcome of the test
D. You might also want to make a batch without any chocolate chips at all
E. You could also label your cookie batches with letters instead of brand names
F. Such factors should also be considered when data collected are being analyzed
G. In most tests, we want to be confident in the relationship between cause and effect

Emily Harper sat at her desk, staring blankly at the math problems in front of her. Numbers and variables danced confusingly across the page, laughing at her every effort. At school, Emily was known for her artistic talents, but math had always been her weakness. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t make sense of it.
Her struggles only worsened in the 10th grade. The pressure to keep up with her classmates grew, and the poor grades shook her confidence. Her parents decided to step in. “We need to find you some help.” her mother gently suggested one evening.
Then came Mr. Jenkins, a retired local teacher known for his unique teaching style. Emily was initially resistant; the idea of spending extra hours on a subject she hated seemed like a punishment. But she unwillingly agreed, knowing something had to change.
Their first session was tense. Mr. Jenkins, sensing her frustration, didn’t dive straight into problems. Instead, he asked about her interests. When Emily spoke passionately about her painting, he smiled. “Math is like art, Emily. It has patterns and beauty if you know where to look.”
Doubtful but inspired, Emily listened as he began to explain concepts through visual examples. He used colors and shapes, turning abstract numbers into something almost tangible (有形的). For the first time, math seemed less like a foreign language and more like a puzzle waiting to be solved.
However, progress was slow. Weeks passed with minimal improvement, and Emily’s patience wore thin. A particularly difficult quiz left her in tears, convinced she was sure to fail.
Mr. Jenkins said. “Remember, Emily, every artist starts with a blank canvas, Masterpieces aren’t created overnight.”
Encouraged by his firm belief, Emily pushed on. She began to see the connections between the steps, and Mr. Jenkins celebrated every progress she made, no matter how minor it was.
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Gradually, Emily’s confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

D 5. C 6. C 7. B

根据第一段中的“Priced between $2,000 and $20,000, these devices are unaffordable for most students, and they often have mechanical failures because of their complex and costly components. Rather than accept this reality, Mehta decided to try and make his own version (这些设备的价格在2000美元到20000美元之间,大多数学生都买不起,而且由于组件复杂且昂贵,它们还经常出现机械故障。Mehta没有接受这个现实,而是决定尝试制作自己的版本)”可知,Mehta研发新盲文阅读器是因为现有设备价格过高且频繁出故障。故选D项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“I was deeply moved when the first student, Himanshu, placed his finger on the braille cell during a test trial and accurately identified the characters I had input. Seeing that brought literal tears to my eyes (当第一个学生Himanshu在测试中把手指放在盲文单元上,准确识别出我输入的字符时,我深受感动。看到那个场景,我真的流下了眼泪)”可知,“that”指代前文“Himanshu成功识别字符”这一事件,正是这一成功让Mehta感动落泪。故选C项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“However, programming the device to transform input text into braille was something he had to teach himself. Ultimately, Mehta overcame this challenge by developing his skills and understanding of programming (然而,为设备编写程序以将输入文本转换为盲文,是他必须自学的内容。最终,Mehta通过提升自己的编程技能和理解,克服了这个挑战)”可知,Mehta在项目中遇到的困难是学习编程技能。故选C项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段内容“The device simulates braille letter patterns by using a set of six rotating (旋转的) motors that gently press against the user’s fingers. These motors are connected to an Arduino... Users can read the braille output with 86% accuracy...(该设备使用六个旋转电机轻轻按压用户的手指,模拟盲文字母图案。这些电机连接到Arduino平台……然后,字符信息被输入设备,转换为盲文并发送到电机。用户读取盲文输出的准确率可达86%……)”可知,该段围绕“设备如何工作”展开,详细介绍了其工作流程和原理。故选B项。
C
B 9. C 10. A 11. C
根据首段中的“With sufficient parking, the Boulangerie offers its car-borne customers a variety of choices. The boulangerie is traditionally a feature of the village square or high street. Yet now, it is taking off as an out-of-town drive-in or drive-to experience.(有足够的停车位,面包房为其汽车客户提供多种选择。面包房传统上是乡村广场或商业街的特色。然而现在,它正在发展成为一种城外的免下车体验)”可知,这家新开的法式面包房给汽车客户提供各种选择,而且他现在正在发展成为一种城外免下车体验,由此可知,新开业的法式面包房的目标客户是那些匆忙的司机。故选B项。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“Marie Blachere, a chain of boulangeries which started their business on car-accessible edge-of-town sites, now has over 700 outlets across France; 70 opened last year alone.(Marie Blachere是一家面包房连锁店,最初在城市边缘的汽车可达的地方开展业务,现在在法国有700多家分店;仅去年一年就新开了70家)”可知,Marie Marie Blachere是一家面包房的连锁店,现在在法国有700多家分店,仅去年一年新开了70家,结合尾句“In the city of Chartres, Cyril Avert boulangerie serves baguettes to motorists at the wheel, as a pure drive-through service. So does Jules & John, in over 20 towns in France.(在沙特尔市,Cyril Avert面包房为开车的司机提供法式长棍面包,作为一种纯粹的免下车服务。Jules & John也一样,在法国的20多个城镇都有)”可知,Cyril Avert面包房为司机提供免下车服务,而且Jules & John在法国的20多个城镇都有,也为司机提供免下车服务,综合以上信息可知,本段主要讲述的是面包房扩张的例子。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据尾段中的“The drive-in or drive-to fashion is not welcome news for the boulangeries on narrow town-centre streets, many of which are struggling with rising costs. But it does reflect a stubborn fact about France, which those who govern from its city centres ignore.(对于市中心狭窄街道上的面包房来说,“免下车”服务的时尚可不是什么好消息,它们中的许多都在与不断上涨的成本作斗争。 故选A项。
D 13. A 14. B 15. B

根据第二段“There’s nothing that grabs attention like a good story, and there are some great philosophical stories that delight and engage, rather than putting the reader to sleep.(没有什么能像一个好故事那样吸引人的注意力,有一些伟大的哲学故事会让读者感到愉悦和吸引人,而不是让读者昏昏欲睡)”以及第三段“One of the great things about this is that, unlike formal philosophy, which tries to be very clear, stories don’t wear their meanings on their sleeve — they require interpretation, and often express conflicting ideas for the reader to wrestle with.(这其中最重要的一点是,与形式哲学不同的是,故事并不会把自己的意思挂在明面上——它们需要解释,而且常常表达出相互矛盾的观点,让读者纠结)”可知,哲学故事可以使读者有参与感和激发批判性思维。
根据第四段“Consider what philosophers call the metaphysics (形而上学) of race — an area of philosophy that explorers the question of whether or not race is real. There are three main positions that you can take on these questions. You might think that a person’s race is written in their genes (a position known as “biological realism”). Finally, you might think that races are unreal — that they’re more like leprechauns (一种魔法精灵) than they are like Thursdays or dollars (“anti-realism”).(让我们来考虑一下哲学家所称之为种族的形而上学——这是探究种族是否真实的哲学问题。关于这个问题,你可能持有三个主要观点。你可能认为一个人的种族写在他们的基因中(被称为“生物现实主义”)。或者,你可能认为种族是社会上真实存在的,就像星期几或货币一样(“社会建构主义”)。最后,你可能认为种族是虚幻的——它们更像一种魔法精灵而不是星期四或美元(“反现实主义”))”可知,Christmas为一个节日,是社会的共有认知,应属于“社会建构主义”。故选A项。
根据第五段“A great example of a story with social constructionist taking on race is George Schuyler’s novel Black No More. In a final episode, Crookman discovers that new Whites are actually a whiter shade of pale than those who were born that way, which kicks off a trend of sunbathing to darken one’s skin-darkening it so as to look more While.(一个以社会建构主义观点来探讨种族问题的精彩例子是乔治·斯库勒的小说《不再是黑人》。
根据第一段“Philosophers have a bad reputation for expressing themselves in a dry and boring way. The ideals for most philosophical writing are precision, clarity, and the sort of conceptual analysis that leaves no hair un-split.(哲学家以枯燥乏味的方式表达自己而臭名昭著。大多数哲学作品的理想是精确、清晰,以及那种不留痕迹的概念分析)”以及最后一段“Philosophically rich stories like this bring more technical works to life. They are stories to think with.(像这样富有哲理的故事给生活带来了更多的技术作品。它们是用来思考的故事)”以及纵观全文可知,文章主要介绍了哲学的抽象而复杂的理念往往是通过一个个有趣的小故事的形式体现的,它会启发读者思考,所以B项“Stories to Think with(可供思考的故事)”是本文最好的标题。故选B项。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
A 17. D 18. G 19. E 20. C
根据下文“In order to figure out the real answers to such questions, you’ll need to test your ideas in a fair way(为了找出这些问题的真正答案,你需要以公平的方式测试你的想法)”可推理出上文说的是并非所有的测试都是公平的,与A项“But all tests are not created equal(但并非所有测试都是平等的)”表达的含义一致,故选A项。
根据下文“just to make sure that the chocolate chips are really making a difference in the cookies’ taste.(只是为了确保巧克力片真的能改变饼干的味道。)”可推理出上文说的是制作一批不含巧克力片的,与D项“You might also want to make a batch without any chocolate chips at all (你可能还想做一批根本不含巧克力片的)”表达的含义一致,故选D项。
根据下文“Therefore, you’ll need to control variables(因此,您需要控制变量)”可知下文说的是与因果关系有关的变量控制,可推理出上文说的是对测试中的因果关系有信心,与G项“In most tests, we want to be confident in the relationship between cause and effect (在大多数测试中,我们希望对因果关系充满信心)”表达的含义一致,故选G项。
根据上文“To avoid such potential sources of bias, you’d want to set up the test so that different testers taste the cookies in different orders.( 为了避免这种潜在的偏见来源,你需要设置测试,让不同的测试人员按照不同的顺序品尝饼干。)”可知此处上下文说的是为了避免潜在的偏见而采取的措施,分析待选项,E项“You could also label your cookie batches with letters instead of brand names (你也可以用字母而不是品牌名称来标记你的饼干批次)”表达的含义符合语境,故选E项。
根据上文“Some cookies in a batch might have wound up with a few less chocolate chips than others. The oven might have heated unevenly and burnt a few cookies.(一批饼干中的一些饼干可能比其他饼干少了几块巧克力片。烤箱可能受热不均,烧焦了一些饼干。)”可知此处上下文说的是影响测试结果的随机因素,与C项“All of these random factors will affect the outcome of the test (所有这些随机因素都会影响测试结果)”表达的含义一致,故选C项。

New Approaches to Poetry Appreciation
Dear fellow members,
I’m Li Hua and I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on new ways to appreciate poetry.
Poetry appreciation shouldn’t be limited to just reading silently alone. This old way often makes us miss the rhythm and emotion in the lines — poetry is meant to be felt, not just seen.
I think two approaches work well. First, listen to poetry recitals, either live or online. The performers’ tone and pauses can bring the words to life, helping us catch hidden feelings. Second, pair poems with art, like drawing a scene from a nature poem. This lets us connect with the poetry in a creative, personal way.
Let’s try these new ways to enjoy poetry more!
Thank you.

(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Gradually, Emily’s confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Gradually, Emily’s confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help. She started to approach math problems with newfound enthusiasm. Instead of dreading them, she would actively seek solutions, applying the techniques Mr. Jenkins had taught her. She no longer saw math as an insurmountable obstacle but as an exciting challenge. In class, she began to volunteer answers, much to the surprise of her teachers and classmates. Her after-school study sessions became a time of exploration rather than frustration. She would spend hours practicing, often losing track of time as she delved deeper into the world of numbers.
Emily’s heart raced when the results day arrived. She had worked so hard, and the thought of seeing if it had paid off filled her with both excitement and anxiety. As she opened the envelope containing her math test results, her eyes widened. A broad smile spread across her face. She had passed with flying colors! She couldn't wait to tell Mr. Jenkins. His unwavering belief in her and his unique teaching methods had finally borne fruit. This achievement was not just a victory in math but a testament to her own perseverance and the power of a great teacher.
