By the time Nalin Kamat was 13, the Toronto teen was well on his way to becoming a working artist. He had already had his first show at a local art center, showcasing his series titled “Dispositions”, which illustrated his own growth during adolescence (青少年).
Yet he wanted more — specifically to start showing his work in a juried exhibition, where a group of art experts would evaluate and select pieces in a competitive review process. That’s when he hit an obstacle, discovering in the very last line of a multi- page application that the minimum age for submission was 18.
That rejection became a motivation for creation. “I thought it’d be really cool if I could provide the opportunity to more young artists,” says Nalin, now 15. With the support of his parents, in January 2023, Nalin rented a storefront and founded Little EGG Gallery, which is now profitable enough to make ends meet by charging a small hanging fee for any displayed work. In turn, Little EGG helps promote young talent by showcasing their work.
Not long after opening, David Griffin, a professor and artist of Ontario College of Art and Design University stepped into the gallery and met Nalin. Griffin regards him as someone special: “a strong young artist with a really excellent idea — creating a space for showing the natural genius of young people. It was a void (空白) in the art world.” There Nalin asked Griffin to help judge an upcoming competition. The first juried show was last spring, and five- year - old Jack Gamble won for his abstract painting titled Pokemon.
As Nalin was busy with school, life and his own art, Little EGG is mostly open by appointment only, but he’s still committed to growing it with seasonal and themed shows scheduled a few times a year.
4. What do we know about Nalin Kamat from the first two paragraphs?
A. He drew teenagers’ growth in his work. B. He became a working artist when aged 13.
C. He was disqualified for a juried exhibition. D. He showed his series at the capital art center.
5. Why did Nalin decide to set up Little EGG Gallery?
A. To promote artists by showcasing their work.
B. To form the connection between different galleries.
C. To expand his own business through themed shows.
D. To show young artists’ talent by offering them a stage.
6. Which of the following can best describe Nalin’s idea of opening the gallery?
A. Pioneering. B. Short-lived. C. Popular. D. Unpromising.
7. What kind of person is Nalin Kamat according to the text?
A. Helpful and cautious. B. Devoted and creative.
C. Humorous and intelligent. D. Knowledgeable and ambitious.
C
Human history is full of horse stories like guiding cowboys home on foggy nights and taking wounded soldiers through battle zones. Such sensible and highly trained horses made Elina Jatel, a computer scientist and roboticist, think of robots. “A horse that can take a rider home on its own would be the highest level of autonomy,” Jatel says. “You trust them with your life.” She was drawn to learning how such relationships form and if it could help improve human-robot interactions.
For a year, Jatel engaged herself in the horse world. She watched classes in horse training, and she also talked with students, instructors, trainers and horse owners. Along the way, Jatel even learned to ride.
Horses learn signals from their trainers on how to comfortably interact with people. People, too, must learn their part. Riders must learn what a horse wants or feels based on its behavior, and what signals to use to direct horses to perform in desired ways. Jatel found some similarities, here, to working with robots. People must learn how to direct robots to do specific tasks. They also must learn what to do when robots don’t perform as planned. The goal is to program robots that will respond predictably to inputs from people. But like horses, autonomous robots also should be able to respond on their own as conditions change. For example, a self-driving car must stop to avoid hitting something, even if some human mistakenly tells it to keep going.
Trainers and riders work with horses to build respect. Horses show that respect by matching their pace to a human or giving someone who is leading them a safe degree of personal space. Trainers begin their work with a horse by getting them to show signs of respect in basic interactions, Jatel says. Later, trainers will develop more complex interactions. Gradually, a horse’s respect can grow into trust.
But that trust is not given. And there may be a similar limitation with robots. What would it mean for robots and people to respect and trust each other? For now, she adds, this is largely uncharted territory. But she’s looking to build a path.
8. What drew Elina Jatel’s attention to horses?
A. Horses’ amazing performance. B. Long history of horse training.
C. Horse-human interdependence. D. Her horse-riding experience.
9. What are the robots of the highest autonomy designed to do?
A. To act like real horses. B. To show respect to humans.
C. To follow instructions from humans. D. To make independent and sensible decisions.
10. What will Jatel’s future research most probably focus on?
A. The limitations of robots. B. Trust between robots and humans.
C. Path toward higher robot efficiency. D. Similarities between horses and robots.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. History of Human-Horse Relationship B. Secrets of Human-Animal Interactions
C. The Role of Trust in Human-Robot Partnerships D. Horses as the Inspiration for Autonomous Robots
D
In the endless sky, the unaided human eye should be able to perceive several thousand stars on a clear, dark night. Unfortunately, growing light pollution has impeded people from the nightly view.
New citizen-science-based research throws alarming light on the problem of “sky glow”-the diffuse illumination (漫射照明) of the night sky that is a form of light pollution. The data came from crowd-sourced observations collected from around the world as part of Globe at Night, a program developed by astronomer Connie Walker.
Light pollution has harmful effects on the practice of astronomy but also on human health and wild-life, since it disturbs the cycle from sunlight to starlight that biological systems have evolved alongside. Furthermore, the loss of visible stars is a great loss of human cultural heritage. Until relatively recently, humans throughout history had an impressive view of the starry night sky, and the effect of this nightly spectacle (壮观) is evident in ancient cultures.
Globe at Night has been gathering data on star visibility since 2006. Anyone can submit observations through the Globe at Night web application. Participants record which one best matches what they can see in the sky without any telescopes or other instruments.
Researchers find that the loss of visible stars indicates an increase in sky brightness of 9.6% per year while roughly 2% is measured by satellites. Existing satellites are not well suited to measuring sky glow as it appears to humans, because they can not detect wavelengths shorter than 500 nanometers (纳米). White LEDs, with shorter wavelengths under 500 nanometers, now are increasingly commonly used in outdoor lighting. But human eyes are more sensitive to these shorter wavelengths at nighttime. Space-based instruments do not measure light from windows, either. But these sources are significant contributors to sky glow seen from the ground.
“The increase in sky glow over the past decade underlines the importance of redoubling our efforts and developing new strategies to protect dark skies,” said Walker. “The Globe at Night dataset is necessary in our ongoing evaluation of changes in sky glow, and we encourage everyone to get involved to help protect the starry night sky.”
12. What does the underlined word “impeded” in the first paragraph mean?
A. separated. B. disabled. C. demanded. D. protected.
13. What does the loss of visible stars lead to?
A. Poorer human health. B. Fewer wildlife species.
C. More delicate biological systems. D. Less nightly culture elements of the sky.
14. What can we learn from the text?
A. White LEDs’ being widely used leads to the sky glow.
B. The toss of visible stars indicates a decrease in sky brightness of 2% per year.
C. Compared to satellites, human eyes can more easily detect wavelengths shorter than 500 nanometers.
D. Anyone can submit observations they record with telescopes through the Globe at Night web application.
15. What can be inferred from Walker’s words?
A. Their consistent efforts pay off. B. The dataset needs to be updated.
C. The sky glow has been over-emphasized. D. More participants are expected to join in.

Maybe you are probably getting an earful (训斥) from your inner voice ___16___. Here are several ways to change your self- talk script and to use your inner voices to perform better.
Listen critically to your inner critic
In high- pressure situations, self- talk is often critical. Instead of thinking deliberately and logically, our inner voices are caused by emotion. That influences everything from how we talk to ourselves to our behaviors. ___17___. And when your inner voices start to fill with words of frustration and discouragement, pause the conversation as you consider ways to change it.
Create psychological distance from yourself
One effective way to manage stress is to create psychological distance. This can be achieved by using second- or third- person pronouns when referring to the situation. Asking yourself,“ Why are you feeling so stressed?” is one way to create the psychological distance you need to regulate emotion. ___18___.
Fit your conversation to your goal
___19___. Instructional self- talk like“ shoulders back” or“ keep the left arm straight” works to improve technique. Motivational self-talk such as“ you’ve got this” or“ keep going” can help with confidence, strength, or endurance. It’s important to be aware of the type of self-talk you are using and make sure it aligns with your goals and needs.
___20___
Demeaning or negative self- talk is only going to increase your stress and hold you back. Instead, speak compassionately to yourself — just as you would to a friend. Recreate negative messages to include positive content. “I am not good at this.” can be changed to“ Relax. You are prepared for this.” “I don’t know what to say.” can be replaced by“ Remember to smile and ask good questions.”
A. Treat yourself as a friend
B. Make as many friends as possible
C. Using instructional language is appropriate
D. Different types of self- talk work best for specific goals
E. So your first step is to listen critically to what you are saying to yourself
F. Often, negative comments in your head make it difficult for you to succeed

A 9. D 10. B 11. D

A. separated. B. disabled. C. demanded. D. protected.
13 What does the loss of visible stars lead to?
B 13. D 14. C 15. D

根据第一段“In the endless sky, the unaided human eye should be able to perceive several thousand stars on a clear, dark night. (在一望无际的天空中,在一个晴朗、黑暗的夜晚,人类的肉眼应该能够看到几千颗星星。)”以及划线词上文“Unfortunately, growing light pollution has”可知,人类的肉眼本来可以看到几千颗星星,不幸的是,日益严重的光污染却使人们不能欣赏夜景。故划线词意思是“使……不能”。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Furthermore, the loss of visible stars is a great loss of human cultural heritage. Until relatively recently, humans throughout history had an impressive view of the starry night sky, and the effect of this nightly spectacle (壮观) is evident in ancient cultures. (此外,可见星星的损失是人类文化遗产的巨大损失。直到最近,历史上的人类都能看到令人印象深刻的星空,这种夜间奇观的影响在古代文化中很明显。)”可知,可见星星的缺失会导致较少的夜间天空文化元素。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“Existing satellites are not well suited to measuring sky glow as it appears to humans, because they can not detect wavelengths shorter than 500 nanometers (纳米). White LEDs, with shorter wavelengths under 500 nanometers, now are increasingly commonly used in outdoor lighting. But human eyes are more sensitive to these shorter wavelengths at nighttime. (现有卫星不适合测量人类看到的天空辉光,因为它们无法探测到 500 纳米以下的波长。如今,波长低于 500 纳米的白色LED在户外照明中使用越来越普遍。但人类的眼睛在夜间对这些较短的波长更敏感。)”可知,与人造卫星相比,人眼更易探测 500 纳米以下的波长。故选C项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The Globe at Night dataset is necessary in our ongoing evaluation of changes in sky glow, and we encourage to get involved to help protect the starry night sky. (全球夜间数据集对于我们持续评估天空辉光的变化是必要的,我们鼓励每个人帮助保护星空。)”可推断,Walker期望会有更多的参与者加入。故选D。
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Maybe you are probably getting an earful (训斥) from your inner voice. ___16___.
G. This way you might find your task an interesting challenge instead of a threat
F 17. E 18. G 19. D 20. A
根据空前句“Maybe you are probably getting an earful (训斥) from your inner voice.(也许你可能听到了内心训斥的声音)”提到你可能从内心的声音中听到了长时间的数落;空后“Here are several ways to change your self- talk script and to use your inner voices to perform better.(这里有几个方法来改变你的自我对话脚本,用你内心的声音来表现得更好。)” F项中的“ negative comments in your head”与空前句中的“ an earful from your inner voice”相呼应,且其中的“ make it difficult for you to succeed”与空后句中的“ perform better”相呼应。 因此,F选项“Often, negative comments in your head make it difficult for you to succeed(通常,你头脑中的负面评论会让你很难成功)”衔接上下文。故选F。
根据后文“And when your inner voices start to fill with words of frustration and discouragement, pause the conversation as you consider ways to change it.(当你内心的声音开始充满沮丧和沮丧时,暂停谈话,考虑改变它的方法)”中提取的关系词“And”可知,设空处与空后句构成并列关系。空前句“In high- pressure situations, self- talk is often critical. Instead of thinking deliberately and logically, our inner voices are caused by emotion. That influences everything from how we talk to ourselves to our behaviors.(在压力很大的情况下,自言自语往往是至关重要的。我们内心的声音是由情感引起的,而不是有意识地、合乎逻辑地思考。这影响了从我们如何自言自语到我们的行为)”与内心的声音的消极影响相关,空后句与应对内心的声音的做法有关。根据设空处与空后句的并列关系可知,设空处锁定在E项。E项还与空前句构成因果关系,且该项中的“critically”是对小标题中的“critically”和段首句中的“critical”的原词及同根词复现。E选项“So your first step is to listen critically to what you are saying to yourself(因此,你的第一步是批判性地倾听你对自己说的话)”符合语境。故选E。
根据空前内容“One effective way to manage stress is to create psychological distance. This can be achieved by using second- or third- person pronouns when referring to the situation. Asking yourself,“ Why are you feeling so stressed?” is one way to create the psychological distance you need to regulate emotion.(管理压力的一个有效方法是创造心理距离。这可以通过使用第二人称或第三人称代词来实现。问自己:“为什么你感到这么有压力?”是一种创造心理距离的方法,你需要这种距离来调节情绪)”提到应对压力的一个有效方法是创造心理距离,并举例说明“问自己‘为什么你感到压力如此之大?’”是一种创造调节情绪所需的心理距离的方法。因此,设空处位于段尾,应能承接上文,与空前句提到的创造心理距离的方法相关,G选项“This way you might find your task an interesting challenge instead of a threat(这样你会发现你的任务是一个有趣的挑战而不是威胁)”说明了使用该方法的好处,且其中的“ This way”指代的正是空前句中的“Asking yourself, “Why are you feeling so stressed?””。
因此,设空处也应与此相关,故将答案锁定在D选项“Different types of self- talk work best for specific goals(不同类型的自言自语对特定的目标效果最好)”,其中的“goals”是对小标题中的“goal”的同词复现。故选D。
根据本段内容“Demeaning or negative self- talk is only going to increase your stress and hold you back. Instead, speak compassionately to yourself — just as you would to a friend. Recreate negative messages to include positive content. “I am not good at this.” can be changed to“ Relax. You are prepared for this.” “I don’t know what to say.” can be replaced by“ Remember to smile and ask good questions.”(贬低或消极的自言自语只会增加你的压力,阻碍你前进。相反,你应该同情地对自己说话——就像对朋友说话一样。重新创造负面信息以包含积极内容。“我不擅长这个。可以改成“放轻松。”你已经准备好了。”“我不知道该说什么。可以用“记得微笑,问好问题”来代替)”可知,本段建议人们不要进行贬低性的或消极的自我对话,而要像对待朋友那样对自己说积极的话,A选项“Treat yourself as a friend(把自己当成朋友)”能很好地概括本段主旨。故选A。
