An embroidered (刺绣的) butterfly made by Liang Zhongmei is so lifelike that it could easily be mistaken for the real thing. It looks as if it could flap its colorful wings and fly free from its white cloth background.
This 55-year-old embroider from Guizhou Province was born in a closed and underdeveloped village deep in the mountains, where most residents live by farming or as migrant workers. Losing her left arm at a very young age meant she could not feed herself, but she refused to become downhearted, and learned embroidery from her mother diligently and determinedly.
After producing several works featuring butterflies and goldfish, she won many national professional skills awards in 2011 among people with disabilities. In 2012, she opened her workshop, with embroiderers putting their designs on the shelves to sell to locals, but business was poor.
However, Liang’s career prospered after an online commercial order. Now, clothes, ties, paintings and handicrafts produced by the workshop are sold to consumers worldwide on e-commerce (电子商务) platforms, with profit (利润) reaching from 300,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan annually.
As the number of orders rose, Liang employed more workers, offering jobs to more than 100 female embroiderers in the neighborhood. She has also organized training courses for jobless women. “Thanks to the online buyers, our products sell well, which has changed our lives and brought us income and dignity (尊严),” Liang said.
Wang Danqing, an online seller, has worked with Liang’s team since 2015. She said, “Many young consumers prefer products with cultural elements (元素) and personal appeal. Only by combining embroidered designs with modern life can cultural heritage (遗产) be seen, loved, protected and passed down.”
4. What do we know about Liang Zhongmei?
A. She made a fortune when her business began.
B. She became world-famous after winning awards.
C. She learned embroidery in order to help her family.
D. She was strong-willed while learning embroidery.
5. Which of the following can replace the underlined word in paragraph 4?
A. took off
B. went wrong
C. stayed unchanged
D. broke down
6. What can we learn from Wang Danqing’s words?
A. New designs need to be integrated into the products.
B. Products with personal elements are favored by the youth.
C. Expanding the range of product sales online is important.
D. Cultural heritage can only be protected by keeping traditions.
7. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Online sales help promote traditional embroidery in China.
B. Liang became an expert in embroidery despite her disability.
C. Disabled Liang achieved success by trading embroidery online.
D. Young consumers’ love saves Liang’s embroidery business.
D 5. A 6. B 7. C

根据第二段的“Losing her left arm at a very young age meant she could not feed herself, but she refused to become downhearted, and learned embroidery from her mother diligently and determinedly. (很小的时候就失去了左臂,这意味着她不能养活自己,但她不灰心,她勤奋而坚定地向母亲学习刺绣。)”可知,梁忠美学习刺绣时意志非常坚定。故选D。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段的“Now, clothes, ties, paintings and handicrafts produced by the workshop are sold to consumers worldwide on e-commerce (电子商务) platforms, with profit (利润) reaching from 300,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan annually. (现在,车间生产的衣服、领带、绘画和手工艺品通过电子商务平台销售给全球消费者,年利润达到30万至50万元不等。)”可知,开始接受网上订单后,梁忠美的事业开始蓬勃发展。因此猜测,划线词prospered意为“蓬勃发展”,与take off同义。故选A。
根据最后一段的“Many young consumers prefer products with cultural elements (元素) and personal appeal. Only by combining embroidered designs with modern life can cultural heritage (遗产) be seen, loved, protected and passed down.(许多年轻消费者更喜欢具有文化元素和个人吸引力的产品。只有将刺绣设计与现代生活结合起来,才能让文化遗产被人看到、被人喜爱、被人保护、被人传承。)”可知,Wang Danqing认为带有个人特色的产品受到年轻人的喜欢。故选B。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文并结合第二段的“Losing her left arm at a very young age meant she could not feed herself, but she refused to become downhearted, and learned embroidery from her mother diligently and determinedly. (很小的时候就失去了左臂,这意味着她不能养活自己,但她不灰心,她勤奋而坚定地向母亲学习刺绣。)”以及第四段的“Now, clothes, ties, paintings and handicrafts produced by the workshop are sold to consumers worldwide on e-commerce (电子商务) platforms, with profit (利润) reaching from 300,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan annually. (现在,车间生产的衣服、领带、绘画和手工艺品通过电子商务平台销售给全球消费者,年利润达到30万至50万元不等。)”可知,文章主要讲述手臂残疾的梁忠美从小坚定不移地学习刺绣,并通过在网上交易刺绣获得了成功。故选C。
C
As ice sheets melted (融化), they often left behind landscapes that typically take many years to become habitable (宜居) for plants and wildlife. However, recent research has discovered that in just three years, these poor areas can be brought back to life by South American camelids (南美驼).
By the foot of Peru’s Uruashraju glacier (冰川), researchers partnered with local farmers to herd (放牧) camelids on four areas. For three days a month from 2019 to 2022, the camelids grazed (吃草) the areas. By the end of that time, the otherwise dry and easily destroyed soil had become more stable, richer in nutrients (营养物质) and supported 57 percent more plant cover than before. This traditional South American way of camelids herding could potentially protect crops, animals and local communities from the impacts of climate change.
As is the case worldwide, glaciers are disappearing in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca mountains at an astonishing rate. And as the ice melts, nearby ecosystems lose access to summertime supplies of freshwater and sometimes face harmful acidic (酸性的) minerals (矿物质) in rocks once covered by the glaciers. Camelids may help ease some of these effects. Their transformation of the land could reduce rock weathering (风化), thus limiting the acidic runoff that can damage farmers’ crops.
The idea that grass-eating animals grazing (吃草) may positively impact a landscape is not new. Nor is rewilding — the push to reintroduce key species to their native ecosystems — unique to the Cordillera Blanca mountains. In Finland, for example, local Sami are working to reintroduce reindeer in areas where trees have been cut down. And a group in Spain hopes one day to lift the wild cattle known as the auroch out of extinction, putting it to use in grazing.
But the size and speed of the changes the camelids helped bring about surprised the researchers. “Putting nutrients over the soil can produce similar effects on plant growth,” says ecologist Kelsey Reider of James Madison University, but “the animals themselves are doing a lot”. For one, animal waste is special. For another, the camelids weed out dominant (占优势) plants, making space-for-mow species.
8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Reasons for the research.
B. Partnership with local farmers.
C. Results of camelids herding.
D. Impacts of climate change.
9. What might be a result of glaciers melting?
A. Cuts in summer rainfall.
B. Lack of mineral resources.
C. Reduced rock weathering.
D. Increased acidic runoff.
10. Why are the underlined “reindeer” and “auroch?” mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To show a natural event.
B. To support a protection effort.
C. To explain a potential problem.
D. To compare different rewilding project.
11. What is Kelsey Reider’s attitude towards camelids herding?
A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
C 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据第二段“By the foot of Peru’s Uruashraju glacier (冰川), researchers partnered with local farmers to herd (放牧) camelids on four areas. For three days a month from 2019 to 2022, the camelids grazed (吃草) the areas. This traditional South American way of camelids herding could potentially protect crops, animals and local communities from the impacts of climate change.(在秘鲁乌鲁阿什拉尤冰川脚下,研究人员与当地农民合作,在四个区域放牧骆驼类动物。从2019年到2022年的每个月里,有三天的时间骆驼类动物会在这些区域觅食。在那段时间结束时,原本干燥且容易被破坏的土壤变得更加稳定,养分也更加丰富,植被覆盖度比之前增加了57%。这种传统的南美骆驼类放牧方式有可能保护农作物、牲畜和当地社区免受气候变化的影响。)”可知,本段主要描述了美洲驼放牧后土地的变化结果。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“And as the ice melts, nearby ecosystems lose access to summertime supplies of freshwater and sometimes face harmful acidic (酸性的) minerals (矿物质) in rocks once covered by the glaciers. Camelids may help ease some of these effects. Their transformation of the land could reduce rock weathering (风化), thus limiting the acidic runoff that can damage farmers’ crops.(随着冰川融化,附近的生态系统失去了夏季获取淡水的途径,有时还会面临曾经被冰川覆盖的岩石中出现的有害酸性矿物质的困扰。骆驼类动物或许能够缓解一些这些影响。它们对土地的改造可以减少岩石的风化过程,从而限制可能导致农民庄稼受损的酸性径流。)”可知,冰川融化可能导致酸性径流增加。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“The idea that grass-eating animals grazing (吃草) may positively impact a landscape is not new. Nor is rewilding — the push to reintroduce key species to their native ecosystems — unique to the Cordillera Blanca mountains. In Finland, for example, local Sami are working to reintroduce reindeer in areas where trees have been cut down. And a group in Spain hopes one day to lift the wild cattle known as the auroch out of extinction, putting it to use in grazing.(草食动物放牧能够对自然景观产生积极影响这一观点并非新鲜事。
根据最后一段中““Putting nutrients over the soil can produce similar effects on plant growth,” says ecologist Kelsey Reider of James Madison University, but “the animals themselves are doing a lot”. For one, animal waste is special. For another, the camelids weed out dominant (占优势) plants, making space-for-mow species.(詹姆斯·麦迪逊大学的生态学家Kelsey Reider表示:“在土壤上施加养分也能对植物生长产生类似的效果。”但“动物自身也发挥了重要作用”。首先,动物粪便具有特殊意义。其次,骆驼科动物能够淘汰优势植物,为新物种腾出空间。)”可知,Kelsey Reider认为动物本身对土地的改善作用很大,因此她对南美驼放牧持积极态度。故选A。
D
Companies are used to celebrating addition. Profits (利润), customers and share prices should go up rather than fall. Larger numbers are a measure of career success: managers get promoted by taking on more reports, running higher budgets (预算) and earning bigger salaries.
Companies are not always against subtraction (减法). Though not a welcome one, reducing costs is a necessary part of management, which is often undervalued. The best bosses are those who take things away as well as add them on. That means clearing time for employees to get work done. Meetings are almost always called by bosses, but only some of them are useful. Shopify, an e-commerce company, began the year by subtracting 12,000 meetings from their schedules, and reported a rise in productivity as a result.
Subtraction is not just about removing day-to-day distractions It’s also about making decisions to kill off projects and products that are going nowhere, and to focus efforts on the most important parts. Peter Drucker, a management theorist, was a supporter of “planned subtraction”, so that resources that are tied up in small activities are freed for more profitable use. Bosses should, he advised, always ask the same question of every detail of the company: “If we did not do this, would it be any different?”
In The Case for Good Jobs, a new book, Zeynep Ton of MIT Sloan School of Management argues that doing less can often make sense. Costco, a famous American supermarket that believes in the “smart loss of sales”, has purposely limited product choices. That means it can focus its buying power more effectively, forecast demand more accurately and use its employees’ time more productively. “Less” may not sound like a great result for customers, but at some point choice is deeply tiring. When you have spent more time trying to decide what to watch on a streaming service than it takes to go to the cinema and watch the same film twice, few choices seem pretty attractive.
12. Why does the author mention the company Shopify in paragraph 2?
A. To present a fact.
B. To draw a conclusion.
C. To make a comparison.
D. To support an opinion.
13. What advice would Peter Drucker most probably offer to company bosses?
A. They should stop unpromising tasks.
B. They should give up profits for resources.
C. They shouldn’t remove everyday distractions.
D. They should focus on some unfinished work.
14. Which of the following measures is regarded as effective “doing less” commercially?
A. A cinema runs only one particular film a day.
B. A café offers a limited variety of drinks.
C. A bookstore keeps extended opening hours.
D. A clothing brand launches more seasonal collections.
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. The best companies celebrate addition.
B. Companies use numbers to measure success.
C. The smart bosses go against the idea of subtraction.
D. The best bosses know how to subtract work.
D 13. A 14. B 15. D
根据第二段“Meetings are almost always called by bosses, but only some of them are useful. Shopify, an e-commerce company, began the year by subtracting 12,000 meetings from their schedules, and reported a rise in productivity as a result.(会议几乎总是由老板召集,但只有一部分有用。电子商务公司 Shopify 年初从日程中减去了12,000场会议,结果效率有所提高。)”以及上文可知,作者先提出“部分会议无意义,减少干扰可提升效率”的观点,再以Shopify的案例说明“减法”的有效性。引用该案例是为了支持前文观点。故选D项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Peter Drucker, a management theorist, was a supporter of “planned subtraction”, so that resources that are tied up in small activities are freed for more profitable use.(管理理论家彼得・德鲁克支持“有计划的减法”,以便将束缚在次要活动中的资源释放出来,用于更有盈利的用途。)”及“ Bosses should, he advised, always ask the same question of every detail of the company: “If we did not do this, would it be any different?”(他建议,老板应该总是对公司的每个细节问同一个问题:“如果我们不做这件事,会有什么不同吗?”)” 故选A项。
根据最后一段“Costco, a famous American supermarket that believes in the “smart loss of sales”, has purposely limited product choices. That means it can focus its buying power more effectively, forecast demand more accurately and use its employees’ time more productively.(美国著名超市Costco信奉“明智的销售损失”,有意限制了产品选择。这意味着它能更高效地集中购买力,更准确地预测需求,并更高效地利用员工时间。)”可知,“咖啡厅提供种类有限的饮料”是“doing less”的典型案例。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章第二段明确提出“The best bosses are those who take things away as well as add them on.(最优秀的老板既懂得做加法,也懂得做减法。)” The best bosses know how to subtract work.(最好的老板知道如何减少工作量)与引文中的核心观点直接呼应,可作为最佳标题。
Is Sugar Always Bad for You?
Many people think sugar is the “enemy”, but that’s not always true. A study from Brigham Young University found whether sugar is harmful depends on how you consume it. Researchers analyzed data from over 500,000 people across different continents. ____16____ Sugar from drinks (like soda) is more harmful than sugar from foods. Even pure fruit juice, which has a lot of natural sugar, is more harmful than food sugar. “This is the first study to show clear links between different sugar sources and Type 2 diabetes (T2D) (II 型糖尿病) risk. ____17____” said Karen Della Corte, who led the study.
The findings, after taking factors like body weight and lifestyle into consideration, include:
Sugary drinks are risky. The risk for developing T2D increased by 25% with each additional 12 oz daily intake of sweet drinks — including soft drinks, energy drinks, and sports drinks.
Fruit juice is also a problem. With each additional eight-ounce serving of fruit juice per day — including 100% fruit juice — the risk for developing T2D increased by 5%.
Individual responses may vary. ____18____ For example, if the average person’s original risk of developing T2D is about 10%, four sodas a day could raise that to roughly 20%, not 100%.
____19____ Relatively (相对地), eating 20g of total sucrose (蔗糖) and total sugar (all natural and added sugars in diet) daily had an opposite link with T2D, suggesting a surprising protective effect.
Why is drinking sugar more harmful? Sugar in drinks and juice is “free sugar”. It makes blood sugar rise quickly, puts more stress on the liver, and thus increases disease risk. ____20____ These nutrients (营养物质) slow down blood sugar rise, so sugar from food has a smaller impact on the body.
The researchers say more studies are needed, but for now, to enjoy sugar healthily, choose foods with natural sugar and cut down on sugary drinks and juice.
A The amount of sugary food matters.
B. And they found something surprising.
C. Sugary food is in a different category.
D. It tells us why drinking sugar is worse for health than eating it.
E. Moreover, fruit juice with vitamins has lots of sugar but no fiber.
F. But sugar in food is often mixed with nutrients like fiber and protein.
G. The above risks depend on a person’s original risk of developing T2D.
B 17. D 18. G 19. C 20. F
根据上文“A study from Brigham Young University found whether sugar is harmful depends on how you consume it.(杨百翰大学的一项研究发现,糖是否有害取决于你摄入糖的方式)”以及后文“Sugar from drinks (like soda) is more harmful than sugar from foods. Even pure fruit juice, which has a lot of natural sugar, is more harmful than food sugar.(饮料(如苏打水)中的糖比食物中的糖危害更大。即便是富含天然糖分的纯果汁,其危害性也大于食物中的糖)”可知,上文说研究发现糖是否有害取决于摄入方式,结合下文立即给出了具体的发现结果可知,B项“他们发现了一些令人惊讶的事情”符合语境,承上启下。故选B。
【17题详解】
根据上文“This is the first study to show clear links between different sugar sources and Type 2 diabetes (T2D) (II 型糖尿病) risk.(这是首次有研究明确指出不同类型的糖源与2型糖尿病(T2D)风险之间存在关联)”可知,本句是对前句研究结论的进一步说明。
根据后文“For example, if the average person’s original risk of developing T2D is about 10%, four sodas a day could raise that to roughly 20%, not 100%.(例如,如果普通人的原本患2型糖尿病的风险约为10%,那么每天喝四瓶碳酸饮料可能会将这一风险提高到约20%,而不是100%)”可知,此空后紧跟一个例子,说明个人患糖尿病的初始风险不同,增加糖摄入后风险的提升幅度也不同。
根据上文“Why is drinking sugar more harmful? Sugar in drinks and juice is “free sugar”. It makes blood sugar rise quickly, puts more stress on the liver, and thus increases disease risk.(为什么饮用含糖饮料的危害更大呢?

The lunchroom is always so loud. Everyone is either playing games, jumping around, or yelling across the room about the funny thing. Despite how much they all talk, I couldn’t seem to find out what made some of them cool and popular. It must be something unspoken, or maybe an exclusive club they’re a part of. I barely talk though. I just laugh when everyone else is laughing, even when I don’t know what they’re laughing at.
“Mara, are those Jolly Ranchers (快乐牧场糖)?” Sasha asked excitedly. “Yeah,” I responded nervously. I’m not scared of these girls, I was just shocked that one of them called my name. “Those are my favorite! Can I have one pleaseee?” Sasha loved dragging her words like that, and those words felt like they were dragging across my brain. I hate sharing, and I especially hate sharing my candy. Mom only packs me two Jolly Ranchers. Giving one to Sasha would make me feel like a pushover, but if I didn’t share, I can kiss my social life goodbye.
As she stared at me with her big-shiny-popular-girl eyes, I got the best idea. I’m going to use my Jolly Ranchers to climb the ranks of the third grade. So I gave her the Jolly Rancher, but not without sparking up a conversation. “They’re my favorite too. My mom gives me two every day.” I said. “Luckyyy. My mom doesn’t give me candy for school, because my mom said I might choke.” she responded. Yes, she said something back! A week has passed, and soon I am at the top of the social pyramid thanks to my Jolly Ranchers.
Anyway, we have become close friends. Especially to her delight was that I gave my favorite blue Jolly Rancher to her this Friday, when we could watch movies, play games, and dance for the rest of the day. As Ms. Laney, our teacher, played the video, we all followed the dance moves on the screen. Amidst the loud music and laughing, I hear Sasha say “Look what I can do!” She did some strange jumping thing before bending to the ground, but she didn’t get back up. She looked up at me with a frightened look on her face and her hands on her neck.
“Ms Laney! Sasha’s choking!” I screamed.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Without Jolly Ranchers, I didn’t want to go back to school.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“Ms Laney! Sasha’s choking” I screamed. Everyone stopped dancing as Ms. Laney ran to save Sasha. Ms. Laney flipped Sasha over her knee, delivering sharp blows on her back. The blue Jolly Rancher flew out of Sasha’s mouth. It landed in front of me, who was now on my knees in shock. I was scared I would get in trouble, sorry that she choked and angry at myself. “No more Jolly Ranchers!” Ms. Laney warned. I repeatedly said sorry to Sasha, feeling extremely sorry for giving her the Jolly Rancher.
Without Jolly Ranchers, I didn’t want to go back to school. I was afraid that no one even wanted to talk to me without them. But Sasha provided me with the opportunity of a lifetime. She included me in her conversations, and treated me as her actual friend. It turns out being cool and popular is not something unspoken. Even without Jolly Ranchers, our bonds stayed strong. We’re all just normal kids, we’ve all cried in front of each other and the idea of climbing the ranks was replaced by heartfelt friendship.

A. To show a natural event.
B. To support a protection effort.
C. To explain a potential problem.
D. To compare different rewilding project.
11. What is Kelsey Reider’s attitude towards camelids herding?
A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
14 Which of the following measures is regarded as effective “doing less” commercially?

A. The amount of sugary food matters.
