Do you want to know how and why a fallen leaf changes color? We first have to understand what leaves are and what they do.
Leaves are the world’s food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots and take carbon dioxide and oxygen from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose (葡萄糖), a kind of sugar. Plants use it as food for energy.
A chemical called “chlorophyll” in the leaves gives plants their green colour. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter, and trees “know” they need to get ready for the winter.
During the winter, there is not enough sunlight or water. Trees rest during this time and live on the food they store during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. As the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves, we begin to see yellow and orange leaves.
The bright reds and purples (紫色) we see in leaves are made mostly in autumn. In some trees, like maples (枫树), sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn the glucose in the leaves into a red color. And we can enjoy the beautiful red leaves during the autumn.
14.Which word should be in the following box?
A.Water. B.Air. C.Wind. D.Sugar.
15.What does the underlined word “chlorophyll” probably mean in Chinese?
A.蛋白质 B.淀粉 C.脂肪 D.叶绿素
16.Why do the leaves turn yellow?
A.Because they are short of sunlight and water.
B.Because they are short of water and CO2.
C.Because they are short of sunlight and CO2.
D.Because they are short of glucose and energy.
17.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.The importance of trees. B.The importance of leaves.

The traditional Chinese lunar calendar, with a long history of thousands of years, divides a year into 24 solar terms (节气). The Spring Equinox (春分), the fourth term of the year, falls around March 20 and ends in early April.
On the day of the Spring Equinox, the day is as long as the night. ①On this special day, the sun shines directly above the equator. ②After that, the sun moves northward. ③As a result, the days get longer in the Northern Hemisphere. ④The nights become longer in the Southern Hemisphere.
There are some interesting traditions during the Spring Equinox. Standing an egg upright is a popular game all over the country. This old custom dates back to 4,000 years ago. People play this game to celebrate the arrival of spring. It is believed that if you can make an egg stand, you will be lucky in the future.
Moreover, the Spring Equinox is a great time for flying kites. In the old days, medical resources were not enough. To wish for good health, people would write down their health problems on paper kites. When the kite flew high in the sky, they would cut the string and let the kite fly away. This meant that diseases were gone and they hoped to live a healthy life.
All in all, the Spring Equinox is not only a time to mark the change of seasons but also a chance for people to connect with nature and enjoy traditional activities.
18.When does the Spring Equinox usually end?

Oreille was around forty years old. He worked as a head clerk in the War Office. He stayed there only because his wife wanted to increase their income, even though they hardly spent any. He hardly got any pocket money from her wife. He often complained about how she made his life difficult, and some of it really hurt his feelings.
For two years, Oreille had been coming to the office with the same old, patched umbrella. His colleagues made fun of it a lot. Finally, he got sick of their jokes and told his wife to buy him a new one. She bought an eight-franc-and-a-half umbrella, one of those cheap ones sold in thousands in Paris. When the men at the office saw it, they started joking again, and Oreille felt terrible. He was so angry that he told his wife to buy him a new, good silk umbrella for twenty francs (法郎) and show him the bill.
She bought him an eighteen-franc umbrella and said, getting angry and red in the face as she gave it to him, “This will last you at least five years.”
Oreille felt proud, and his new umbrella got a little applause (掌声) at the office. When he got home in the evening, his wife said to him, looking worriedly at the umbrella, “You shouldn’t keep it tied or it might cut the silk.”
She took it, untied it, and was shocked and angry to find a big hole in the middle of the silk. It looked like it was made by the end of a cigar.
“What’s that?” she shouted.
Her husband answered calmly, without looking, “What is it? What do you mean?”
She was so angry that she could hardly speak. “You…you…burned your umbrella! Why…you must be crazy! Do you want to make us poor?”
She rushed at him as if she was going to hit him and pushed the burned hole right under his nose.
Oreille was so surprised that he could only stutter (结结巴巴地说) out, “What… What is it? How would I know? I didn’t do anything, I promise. I don’t know how this happened.”
“You were showing off and opened it at the office!” she yelled.
“I only opened it once to let them see how nice it was. That’s all, I promise.”
But she was shaking with anger and started an argument. Even a calm person would be more afraid of this than a battlefield. She fixed it with a piece of silk. The next day, Oreille went to work quietly with the umbrella. He put it in a cupboard and didn’t think about it anymore.
That evening, as soon as Oreille got home, his wife took the umbrella from him, opened it, and was horrified. The umbrella was covered in many small holes, like someone had emptied the ashes from a lit pipe on it.
She was so angry that she couldn’t say a word. He was also shocked when he saw the damage.
They looked at each other, and then he looked at the floor. Then she threw the broken umbrella at his head and shouted, “Oh! You stupid man! You did it on purpose, but I’ll get back at you. You won’t get another one.”
And then the argument started again. After an hour of shouting, Oreille said he really didn’t understand how it happened.
A doorbell rang and saved him. It was a friend they were expecting for dinner.

After you see somebody else yawn (打哈欠), your mouth opens wide and a big yawn comes out. 26 Is it only a coincidence (巧合)? In fact, this is called contagious (传染性的) yawning.
Contagious yawning doesn’t depend on your brain. It’s just like a reflex (反射动作) you don’t have to think about. Scientists say that it only starts around ages four or five. At that time, kids begin to develop better empathy (同理心). 27 In this view, when someone sees another yawn, he follows as if experiencing the same tiredness or stress.
28 That explains why you’re more likely to catch a yawn from your best friend or family member than from a stranger. It also supports the idea that empathy plays a big role in contagious yawning. The less empathy someone has, the less likely they are to yawn back. Contagious yawning can also help people build social connections with each other. 29 It also works well on some animals like dogs and chimpanzees (黑猩猩).
What happens in the brain when we catch yawns? Your brain has special cells called mirror neurons (镜像神经元). These neurons become active when you see someone do something, and they make you feel like doing the same thing, like yawning. 30
So, the next time you see someone yawn and cannot help yawning, you know it’s your brain’s way of building a connection with your friends, family and even pets.
A.You aren’t especially tired, but it still happens.
B.In fact, yawning is not just a sign of sleepiness.
C.It means understanding and sharing the feelings of others.
D.It’s like your brain is mirroring what the other person is doing.
E.Kids under the age of 4 are not able to consider others’ feelings.
F.In other words, it’s one way our brains help us connect with others.
G.Scientists find that it is more common among those with strong connections.

Do you find it hard to spend an hour at the gym? Don’t worry. Exercise snacks might be the perfect answer! Let’s explore this fun and easy way to stay active.
Exercise snacks are physical activities lasting 1 to 5 minutes. Done during the day, just like snacks between meals, these “mini exercises” are quick and need no special tools.
The term is first used in 2007 by cardiologist (心脏病学家) Dr. Howard Hartley, who was then a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Then, the value of these mini exercises has been agreed nore and more people.
Researchers explain that exercise snacks can improve energy metabolism (新陈代谢), reduce blood sugar levels, and lower the risk of diseases caused by sitting too long. A study showed that climbing stairs three times a day for six weeks increased people’s oxygen intake by 5%, helping with heart health. Plus, they give out “feel-good” chemicals (化学物质) in your brain, making you happier! More benefits can be expected as well, such as the improvement of your concentration (专注力) and creativity.
To help people start, researchers suggest some useful tips. For example, you can use everyday moments—take a two-minute walk after lunch or do sit-ups while brushing your teeth. The key is to repeat it for many times and keep it short and fun.
Remember, exercise snacks aren’t meant to replace daily exercise but to add more movement to your day. Let’s start with one or two “snacks” daily and slowly build the habit!
54.How long do exercise snacks usually last?
55.What examples of exercise snacks are mentioned in the article?
56.How do you like exercise snacks? Why do you think so?

C.Why leaves change color. D.Why tree leaves are green.
【答案】14.A 15.D 16.A 17.C
【导语】本文解释了树叶变色的原因及过程。
14.细节理解题。文章第二段提到“Plants use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose (葡萄糖), a kind of sugar.”,所以光合作用的原料是水(Water)和二氧化碳(CO₂),在阳光下生成葡萄糖(Glucose)。故选A。
15.词句猜测题。文中提到“A chemical called ‘chlorophyll’ in the leaves gives plants their green color.”,即这种化学物质让植物呈现绿色,结合常识,叶绿素是让植物变绿的物质。故选D。
16.细节理解题。第四段开头说“During the winter, there is not enough sunlight or water.”,树停止制造食物,叶绿素消失,叶子变黄。所以原因是缺少阳光和水。故选A。
17.主旨大意题。文章第一段直接提问“Do you want to know how and why a fallen leaf changes colour?”,后面的内容都是在解释叶子变色的原因,所以主旨是叶子为什么会变色。故选C。

A.To introduce the importance of the Spring Equinox in Chinese history.
B.To explain why the sun moves northward after the Spring Equinox.

18.细节理解题。根据“The Spring Equinox (春分), the fourth term of the year, falls around March 20 and ends in early April.”可知,春分通常在3月20日左右开始,4月初结束。故选B。

(To be continued)

A.Angry with his wife for buying a cheap one.
B.Guilty as he thought he might have caused it.

第三部分 信息还原(共5小题:每小题1分,满分5分)
请认真阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
