That was how the adventures began. It was the sort of house that you never seem to
come to the end of,and it was full of unexpected places. The first few doors they tried led
only into spare bedrooms,as everyone had expected that they would;but soon they came
to a very long room full of pictures;and after that was a room all hung with green, with a
harp in one corner;and then a kind of little upstairs hall and a door that led out on to a bal-
cony. And shortly after that they looked into a room that was quite empty except for one
big wardrobe, the sort that has a looking-glass in the door.
"Nothing there!"Everybody rushed out but Lucy stayed because she thought it would
be worthwhile trying the door of the wardrobe, even though she felt almost sure that it
would be locked. To her surprise,it opened quite easily, and two mothballs dropped out.
Looking into the inside, she saw several coats hanging up-mostly long fur coats.
There was nothing Lucy liked so much as the smell and feel of fur.She immediately
stepped into the wardrobe and got in among the coats and rubbed her face against them,
leaving the door open,of course, because she knew that it is very foolish to shut oneself into any
wardrobe...She took a step further in-then two or three steps, always expecting to feel
woodwork against the tips of her fingers. But she could not feel it.
"This must be a simply vast wardrobe!"thought Lucy, going still further in.Then
she noticed that there was something crunching under her feet."Is that more mothball?"
she thought, stooping down to feel it with her hand. But instead of feeling the hard,
smooth wood, she felt something soft and powdery and extremely cold."This is very
queer,"she said, and went on a step or two further.
And then she saw that there was a light ahead of her;...A moment later she found
that she was standing in the middle of a wood at night-time with snow under her feet and
snowflakes falling through the air.

Companies have been switching from plastic straws to paper ones on the grounds of
being more environmentally friendly. However, new research suggests the good-inten-
tioned trend might not be the best alternative after all.
The study found the vast majority of paper straws tested contained PFAS.Commonly
referred to as "forever chemicals",PFAS don't break down in the body or in the environ-
ment.
"Straws made from plant-based materials, such as paper and bamboo, are often adver-
tised as being more sustainable and eco-friendly than those made from plastic,"said Thimo
Groffen, author of the study."However, the presence of PFAS in these straws means
that's not necessarily true.
Researchers on the study examined 39 brands of straws in Belgium from supermar-
kets,toy stores,fast-food chains,drug stores and e-commerce stores.The straws were ei-
ther made of paper, bamboo, glass, stainless steel or plastic, and the researchers tested
each brand for concentrations of PFAS.69%of the brands contained PFAS,with paper
straws more likely to contain the chemicals. The researchers found 90%of paper straws
had PFAS,compared to 80%of bamboo straws,75%of plastic straws,and 40%of glass
straws.Further,a paper straw brand was the brand with the highest PFAS concentration.
Small amounts of PFAS do not pose a risk. However,a build-up of the chemicals in
the body may cause dangerous health problems like liver damage, increased blood.
"The presence of PFAS in paper and bamboo straws shows they are not necessarily bi-
odegradable(可生物降解的),”said Groffen..“We did not detect any PFAS in stainless
steel straws,so I would advise consumers to use this type of straw-or just avoid using
straws at all..”
28.Why do companies show a preference for paper straws?
A.They are considered more economical.
B.They are considered less harmful to the environment.
C.They are considered more beneficial to health.
D.They are considered easier to produce.
29.What can we know about PFAS from the text?
A.They exist the least in plastic straws.
B.They protect our health effectively.
C.They are basic materials for straws.
D.They are a potential threat to human health.
30.What does Groffen probably agree with?
A.Paper straws will become more popular.
B.We should use glass straws more often.
C.We'd better drink without using straws.
D.Stainless steel straws should be avoided.
31.Which of the following serves as the best title?
A.Paper straws are more likely to contain forever chemicals
B.Paper straws have entirely taken the place of plastic straws
C.Paper straws have caused dangerous, health problems to humans
D.Paper straws will become the best alternative for us in the future

Your child is unique, but what all children have in common is natural curiosity(
)and an ability to learn they are born with. Our brains are active all the time, and a
baby's brain is the busiest of all.Research has shown that babies begin to understand lan-
guage about twice as fast as they actually speak it.By showing children other languages at
an early age,you are giving them the opportunity to make use of their natural ability to
hear and recognize()between the sounds of other languages, and their ability to make
sense of what they are hearing.
Communication is something that children do to help them achieve something else, and
they are unaware of the large amount of learning taking place. They take everything in
through their senses, making connections between what they hear, see, smell, taste and
touch. As long as we provide the right conditions, their learning and development will take
place in a natural way.
In your child's early years, the emotional environment is just as important as the phys-
ical environment.Children learn when they feel safe, happy, valued and listened to.This
is central to any learning experience in child's early years, including learning an additional
language.Your child has a trial()-and-error approach to its development, and making
mistakes is a valuable part of the learning process. When children learn an additional lan-
guage at an early age, they get the benefits of experimenting with that language as a natu-
ral part of their development.Their progress isn't prevented by a fear of getting it wrong,
and very young children are simply working their way towards getting it right.
The long-term benefits of learning another language go beyond being able to communi-
cate with others.Studies suggest that children learning an additional language tend to score
better on standardized tests because learning languages develops listening, observation,
problem-solving and critical(批判性的)thinking skills..These are skills that are of life-long
benefit, both personally and professionally.Encouraging in children a love of language at
an early age prepares them well for school and for life.
32.What do we know about children according to Paragraph 1?
A.Children are busy playing.
B.Children are born to speak.
C.Children are good at speaking native language.
D.Children have a better ability to learn other languages.
33.While learning a language,children
A.speak to themselves
B.need to have language classes
C.make use of their different senses
D.notice how much they have learned
34.Children learn when they
A.are in bad emotion
B.need to have language classes
C.learn from their mistakes
D.are taught by their teachers
35.In fact learning another language helps children to
A.take more tests
B.have a good time
C.encourage themselves
D.develop life-long skills

How to Succeed in Science
To succeed in science, you need a lot more than luck.In my view, you have to com-
bine intelligence with willingness not to follow conventions when they block your path for-
ward. Thus, these have come to be my rules for success.
·36
That might sound proud, but the fact is that you must always turn to people who are
brighter than yourself. It's like playing any game.Even as a child,I never wanted to play
games with anyone who was as bad as I was.If you win,it gives you no pleasure. And in
the game of science or life, the highest goal isn't simply to win;it's to win at something re-
ally difficult.37
·Take risks..
To make a huge success,a scientist has to be prepared to get into deep trouble. If you
are going to make a huge jump in science, you will very likely be unqualified to succeed by
definition.38 This can be more than personally upsetting.
Never do anything that bores you.
My experience in science is that someone is always telling you to do things, and then
leave you alone.I'm not good enough to do well in something I dislike.39
It's very hard to succeed if you don't want to be with other scientists-you have to go
to key meetings where you spot key facts that would have escaped you.And you have to chat
with your competitors, even if you find them unpleasant. So my final rule is:40
A.Avoid foolish people.
B.Meet challenges with great courage.
C.In fact,I find it hard to do well in something I like.
D.If you can't stand to be with your real peers, get out of science.
E.Be sure you always have someone to save you from a deep mess.
F.Besides, you even have to be prepared to disbelieve your scientific heroes.
G.Put another way,it's to go somewhere beyond your ability and come out on top.

The air was thick with humidity()inside the swimming pool hall as Elisha paced
nervously near the starting blocks..The chlorine(氯气)in the air stung(使刺痛)her eyes,
but these were mild concerns compared to the matter which seemed largest in her mind:the
result of the state semi-finals().The young 16-year-old had trained hard and devoted
her entire life so far to swimming.Almost as soon as she could walk,Elisha had taken like
a fish to the water and gave her whole body, mind, and spirit to the sport.
She always loved being in the water, whether to cool off on a hot summer's day or to
forget about her troubles at school-the waves simply carried it all away. But for Elisha,
swimming was not merely for recreation. Her father,a retired athlete-turned-coach,always
pushed Elisha to find out the extent of her talents and abilities. Her whole family,in fact,
were full of amateur and professional athletes, especially her older brothers and sisters who
had gone on to play in the NCSA at university.
There was no way she could let them all down. Not here, and not now. Finally, the
等
time had come:the 400-meter medley()relay.In a team of four swimmers,she was
the last one to go in the relay. It would be all on her to secure first place for her team. She
had done well in the swimming meet so far,but this last relay would determine whether
she and her team would move on to the state finals. It all came down to her to bring it
home.
At the sound of the buzzer(蜂鸣器),the swimmers all dove into the water.Kaycee

have been switching from plastic straws to pa-
per ones on the grounds of being more envi-
ronmentally friendly.However,new research
suggests the good-intentioned trend might not
be the best alternative after all..(公司已经从
The study
found the vast majority of paper straws tested
contained PFAS.Commonly referred to as
'forever chemicals',PFAS don't break down
in the body or in the environment.(该研究发
物质,A选项“Paper straws are more likely to

prepared to get into deep trouble. If you are
going to make a huge jump in science, you
will very likely be unqualified to succeed by
39.C[根据上文“I'm not good enough to do
well in something I dislike..(我不擅长做我不
