I was selfish as a teenager. I usually spent my time thinking about myself and taking care of my own needs. I let my older brother do most of the work around the house until he left for college.
I let my Mom and Dad worry about our bills and problems while I read books, played, and lost myself in my own imagination. This didn’t change even when I went to college either. I studied hard but only to make my own life better. Even when I started to explore my faith and spirituality, it was only to increase my own happiness.
I married after graduation and decided to start a family. Of course, I had no idea what hard knocks reality had in store for my selfish soul. Soon I found myself unemployed, deeply in debt, and with a new baby on the way. I found out that life has little sympathy for spoiled people. In fact, all of the struggles I was going through were beating the selfishness slowly out of me.
Still, I didn’t give up on happiness. I knew that there must be a way to find it. I finally realized, however, that it had to include more than just my own needs, wants, and desires. The answer began to make itself clear one night shortly after my baby boy was born. I got a bottle and held him in my arms. As I was feeding him I looked down and saw his big, innocent, trusting eyes. I smiled and talked to him. Then he smiled and I could feel my heart growing, expanding with love. I felt such peace and joy. At that moment I had a hint of the truth: it is by growing our hearts with love that we find our happiness.
Carolyn Arends wrote: "The more people you let into your heart, the bigger your heart gets. The more love you get, the more love you have to give. It just keeps growing." So, keep loving, keep living and keep caring. Keep growing your heart today, tomorrow, and always.

Scientists found what could be the oldest evidence of cooking at the edge of the ancient Lake Hula in Israel at the Gesher Benot Ya’aqov, according to a newly-published paper. The remains, especially fish teeth, were discovered near places where scientists also found signs of fire. Tests showed the teeth had been exposed to temperatures that were hot, but not super-hot. This suggested the fish were cooked slowly over a low heat, rather than being put right onto a fire.
With all the evidence together, scientists concluded that these ancient humans had used fire for cooking some 780,000 years ago. That is much earlier than the next oldest evidence for cooking, about 170,000 years ago, which showed Stone Age humans ate burnt roots in South Africa.
Scientists believe cooking started long before this, though physical evidence has been hard to come by —considering the importance of using fire to cook. Cooked food makes it easier for the body to digest and get more nutrients. When early humans figured out how to cook, they were able to get more energy, which they could use to fuel bigger brains. Based on how human ancestors’ bodies developed, scientists guess that cooking skills would have had to appear nearly 2 million years ago.
Those first cooked meals were a far cry from today’s dinners. And at that time, humans started eating not just for fuel, but for their community. In a 2010 paper, scientists described the earliest evidence of a feast(盛宴), which was a specially prepared meal that brought people together for an event in a cave. This “first feast” came at an important turning point in human history, right as hunter-gatherers were starting to settle into more permanent living situations. Gathering for special meals may have been a way to build community and reduce tensions now that people lived closer to each other. Scientists believe ancient feasts served a lot of the same social uses that modern gatherings serve: People exchange information, make connections, or try to improve their position.
8. Which is probably the earliest evidence of cooking?
A. The tools of cooking. B. The signs of fire.
C. The leftover fish. D. The burnt roots.
9. What message is conveyed in paragraph 3?
A. Food is key to keeping brains’ functioning. B. Using fire to cook is a universal practice.
C. Our understanding of ancestors is limited. D. Cooking is the driving force for human evolution.
10. What do scientists say about ancient feasts?
A. They mark important events. B. They have multiple functions.
C. They differ from modern gatherings. D. They display excellent cooking skills.
11. Why does the author write this text?
A. To inform readers of a new discovery.
B. To explain why early humans started to cook.
C. To present how cooking makes us together.
D. To stress the importance of fire to human life.

People in long-term pain are often offered antidepressants, but a review has found little evidence to support using most such drugs in this way.
It is estimated that about 1 in 5 people have ongoing pain, with a variety of causes and in various locations. However, treatment options are limited. While opioid-based medicines (阿片类药物) are effective for new-onset pain, they can be addictive when used long term. Anti-inflammatory drugs (抗炎药物) can treat pain, but can damage organs with extended use.
This may be why some doctors offer antidepressants as treatment for long-term pain, even though the drugs generally aren’t licensed for such use. Some people with chronic (慢性的) pain are also depressed or anxious, so doctors could see the medicines as primarily helping with these conditions, but antidepressants are also thought to have a separate painkilling effect. The mechanism is unknown, but one idea is that it stems from antidepressants dampening inflammation, at least in animal tests.
Ferreira and his colleagues conducted a review with a detailed breakdown of the existing evidence, making a thorough analysis of the outcomes of 156 randomized trials involving more than 25,000 participants. They looked at the effectiveness of eight types of antidepressant at treating 22 pain conditions. The team discovered there was no good evidence for the effectiveness of most of the drugs. Only one class showed evidence of effectiveness, but even this class reduced pain only modestly, by less than 10 points on a scale of 0 to 100.
The analysis comes to different conclusions than a 2021 review by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which said antidepressants were the only class of medicines that doctors should consider for chronic pain, although this should only be after discussing the potential benefits and harms. The difference in conclusions may be because the latest analysis considered each pain condition separately, says Ferreira.
Cathy Stannard, who advised on the NICE guidelines, says the new review doesn’t mean antidepressants should be ruled out. “Some people will get a useful benefit and there’s no way of predicting who.” But there is unlikely to be any “magic bullet” for chronic pain, says Stannard.
12. What contributes to the use of antidepressants to treat long-term pain?
A. They have a dramatic painkilling effect. B. They have gained approval for treating it.
C. They are believed to possess no side effects. D. They are thought to be multifunctional drugs.
13. What does the underlined word “dampening” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Worsening. B. Stimulating. C. Relieving. D. Causing.
14. How did Ferreira and his team carry out the review?
A. By analyzing the results of existing studies.
B. By observing patients’ reactions to antidepressants.
C. By conducting interviews with over 25, 000 participants.
D. By repeating the trials of antidepressants on participants.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Antidepressants rarely ease pain B. The painkilling effect of antidepressants
C. How to tackle long-term painful conditions D. Antidepressants: “magic bullets” for chronic pain

For years, my family hadn’t had a proper vacation, our lives consumed by busy schedules. This year, I was determined to plan a perfect getaway. My research led me to The Manor, a grand, historic hotel. As I studied a local tourist brochure, I saw it listed the hotel’s main attractions — an award-winning restaurant and a grand lighthouse. Simple activities like walking coastal paths and searching for unique sea glass were also mentioned. For this special vacation, I focused only on what I considered the best experiences. A simple walk on the beach? We could do that anywhere. I wanted the lighthouse climb and the luxury of a fancy dinner.
Just before we left, my father gave me a hug. “Remember,” he said softly, “we can’t control the circumstances, but we can always choose our attitude.” I thought of how he always managed to turn rainy days into opportunities for simple games, finding joy no matter what. I smiled, but confident in my mind that our trip would be so perfect that we would never need his wisdom.
Unfortunately, our journey began with an unexpected storm. A steady, cold rain poured down so heavily that we could barely see the landscape outside our car. Arriving at the hotel, our hopes for an afternoon swim were greeted by a sign on the locked pool door: “Closed for Renovation (翻修)”. Our next thought, a drink at the hotel bar, was met with another sign: “Closed on Mondays”. Defeated, we went to bed early, pinning all our remaining hopes on visiting the lighthouse the next morning.
The following day, the sky was still gray and cold, but at least the rain had softened. We drove to the lighthouse, our spirits lifting as we saw the grand structure rising before us. From the parking lot, we could see a small, unmarked path winding through the tall grass into the distance, but our focus was entirely on the lighthouse. “The view from the top will be amazing!” I shouted. I ran from the car to the gate, ready to start the climb. My heart sank as I read the large, metal sign posted there: CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS.

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. A

Is It Necessary to Have a Gap Year Before College?
The topic of whether high school graduates should take a gap year has sparked heated debate. Personally, I believe that a well-structured gap year can be highly beneficial, provided that it is used purposefully.
There are several reasons why I support this choice. First, by engaging in internships or volunteer work, students can gain practical experience, which helps them make informed decisions about their future careers. Second, traveling or learning new skills during this period not only broadens their horizons but also enhances their adaptability. However, without clear goals, a gap year might lead to wasted time or even a loss of academic momentum.
In conclusion, while a gap year offers valuable opportunities for growth, its success depends on careful planning and self-discipline. Thank you!

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 1: I turned and looked at my husband in disbelief.

Paragraph 2: The path led to a silent beach.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Paragraph I: I turned and looked at my husband in disbelief. The grand lighthouse stood inaccessible behind the metal sign. My shoulders sank, the sting of disappointment sharp and cold in the damp air. Seeing my disappointment, he gave me a warm smile and said, “The big attractions are closed, but our adventure isn’t over.” His calm voice reminded me of my father’s advice: we can always choose our attitude. At that moment, I made a choice. I would not let a few locked doors ruin our family vacation. Taking a deep breath, I nodded toward the small path we had noticed earlier.
Paragraph 2: The path led to a silent beach. Instead of feeling disappointed by the gray weather, we took off our shoes and ran towards the waves. We had a simple walk on the beach. There we also found the colorful sea glass mentioned in the brochure. We spent the next hour like treasure hunters, laughing as we searched for the most beautiful pieces. We couldn’t change that our plans had failed, but we had changed our attitude. That simple choice gave us a more joyful and memorable day than any grand plan could have.
