Women scientists around the world have made significant contributions to Stem (science, technology, engineering, and maths). Here are four who pushed boundaries and changed the world.
Wu Chienshiung (1912—1997)
Bon in Taicang, Jiangsu province, Wu took part in the Manhattan Project which helped create the world’s first nuclear weapon. About a dozen years ago, as I was preparing to leave Cambridge, Massachusetts for Berkeley, California, I took to carrying around a small camera on my walks to and from work and home. I hoped to capture something about the place and my time there and write something before setting off for the West Coast.
What I ultimately carried away with me wasn’t a set of artistic or nostalgic (怀旧的) photos—it was an appreciation for the value of framing things just right. It’s one thing to walk along an elegantly designed street lined with cherry trees in bloom; it’s another to appreciate the arrangement of elements, to think about their meaning, and to compose something that goes beyond that single moment.
I kept taking mental pictures long after I’d used up all my film.
Blogging for 13.7 of NPR (a column of National Public Radio) over the past years has been a bit like carrying around a camera. Instead of taking photos, I’ve wandered the landscape of science and culture in search of interesting findings or ideas to share with the 13.7 community and our broader audience. Thinking about what to write and how to write it has invited me to consider new perspectives, develop new arguments, and think beyond a single academic publication, or a single news cycle.
I’m not the only one of course, to find the experience of writing enlightening. Research in education finds that writing can be an invaluable tool for learning. Psychological studies reveal the value of expressive writing when it comes to processing an upsetting event.
For this is, sadly, a farewell: In the face of limited resources, NPR has decided to terminate 13.7. But just as I continued taking mental pictures long after I ran out of film those years ago in Cambridge, I know that 13.7 has offered me something that will persist beyond the blog: a particular way of capturing the light. And I know that I’ll continue to write, celebrating science and culture.
24. What do we know about the author?
A. He was constantly on the move.
B. He was eager for his new life in Berkeley.
C. He treasured his life experience in Cambridge.
D. He hoped to sharpen his skills in photography in Berkeley.
25. How does the author view 13.7 of NPR?
A. A means of making a living. B. An outlet for his discontent.
C. A shortcut to achieving fame and fortune. D. A platform for learning and enhancement.
26. What does the underlined word “terminate” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Fund. B. Stop. C. Overlook. D. Polish.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Capturing the Light in My Life B. Saying Farewell to the Past
C. Affection for Photography Shaped Me. D. The Journey from Cambridge to Berkeley

On average, American kids ages 3 to 12 spent 29 hours a week in school, eight hours more than they did in 1981. They also did more household work and participated in more of such organized activities as soccer and ballet. Involvement in sports, in particular, rose almost 50% from 1981 to 1997: boys now spend an average of four hours a week playing sports; girls log hall that time. All in all, however, children’s leisure time dropped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%.
“Children are affected by the same time crunch that affects their parents,” says Sandra Hofferth, who headed the recent study of children’s timetable. A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home. (Nevertheless, children in both double-income and “male breadwinner” households spent comparable amounts of time interacting with their parents 19 hours and 22 hours respectively. In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.)
All work and no play could make for some very messed-up kids. “Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself,” says T. Berry Brazelton, professor at Harvard Medical School Unstructured play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with their peers, but kids ages 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours a week engaged in it.
The children sampled spent a quarter of their rapidly decreasing “free time” watching television. But that, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news. If they’re spending less time in front of the TV set, however, kids aren’t replacing it with reading. Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children spent just over an hour a week reading. Let’s face it, who’s got the time?
28. What does the underlined phrase “the same time crunch” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Children have little time to play with their parents.
B. Both parents and children suffer from lack of leisure time.
C. Children are not taken good care of by their working parents.
D. Both parents and children have trouble managing their time.
29. In the author’s opinion, a child develops better if .
A. he has plenty of time reading and studying B. he is free to interact with his working parents
C. he is left to play with his peers in his own way D. he has more time participating in school activities
30. What does the author worry about American kids?
A. They are increasingly ignored by their working mothers.
B. They are engaged in more and more structured activities.
C. They are spending more and more time watching TV.
D. They are involved less and less in household work.
31. What can we conclude from the text?
A. Extracurricular activities promote children’s intelligence.
B. Most parents believe reading to be beneficial to children.
C. Efforts to get kids interested in reading have been fruitful.
D. Most children will turn to reading with TV sets switched off.
D
Picture this: You’re at a movie theater food stand loading up on snacks. You have a choice of a small, medium or large soda. The small is $3.50 and the large is $5.50. It’s a tough decision: The small size may not last you through the whole movie but $5.50 for some sugary drink seems unreasonable. But there’s a third option, a medium soda for $5.25.
Medium may be the perfect amount of soda for you, but the large is only a quarter more. If you’re like most people, you end up buying the large.
If you’re wondering who would buy the medium soda, the answer is almost no one. In fact, there’s a good chance the marketing department purposely priced the medium soda as a decoy, making you more likely to buy the large soda rather than the small.
I have written about this characteristic in human nature before with my friend Dan Ariely who studied this phenomenon extensively after noticing the pricing for subscriptions (订阅) to The Economist.
The digital subscription was $59, the print subscription was $125, and the print plus digital subscription was also $125. No one in their right mind would buy the print subscription when you could get digital as well for the same price, so why was it even an option?
Ariely ran an experiment and found that when only the two “real” choices were offered, more people chose the less expensive digital subscription. But the addition of the bad option made people much more likely to choose the more expensive print plus digital option.
Brain scientists call this effect “asymmetric dominance (不对称优势)”, and it means that people tend toward the choice nearest clearly inferior (较差的) option. Marketing professors call it the decoy effect which is certainly easier to remember. Lucky for consumers, almost no one in the business community understands it.
The decoy effect works because of the way our brains assign value when making choices. Value is almost never absolute; rather, we decide an object’s value relative to our other choices. If more options are introduced, the value equation changes.
32. What does the word “decoy” in paragraph 3 most likely mean?
A. Lie. B. Bargain. C. Trap. D. Bonus.
33. Why is the pricing for subscriptions to The Economist mentioned?
A. To explain how the decoy effect was tested.
B. To illustrate a decoy effect case in marketing.
C. To note possible limitations of the decoy effect.
D. To highlight the significance of the decoy effect.
34. How does the decoy effect influence consumer behavior?
A. It pushes consumers toward a target option.
B. It encourages consumers to purchase more.
C. It guides consumers away from inferior options.
D. It helps consumers discover their true preferences.
35. What can we learn about an object’s value from the last paragraph?
A. It stays the same with more options. B. It is determined by comparing options.
C. It equals the object’s production cost. D. It affects the number of available options.

Many scientists and marine biologists are quite worried about the state of coral reefs around the globe. They have been experiencing “bleaching” (白化) which is a process that involves the slow starvation and eventual death of coral reefs. ____36____ This has huge effects on the organisms that rely on the coral reefs in the ocean and us humans.
____37____ In the Turks and Caicos Islands, it has been reported that the coral reefs have been relatively untouched by the bleaching events. Even more surprising is the news that even the ones affected have recovered very well.
The problem is caused by many reasons. Pollution, introduced species, over-fishing, and over-tourism have all contributed to the issue. ____38____ Since the 1970’s, about 80% of the coral reefs in the Caribbean have died out.
An organization has taken steps to help out. They asked divers to observe over 100 reef sites off the South Caicos Island and set up a database. After scanning the data, they found surprising results. ____39____ But other corals did suffer bleaching. But they quickly rebounded to normal within months of the irregularly high thermal stress (热应力).
Two years later, when the same corals were observed, they were even more colored. ____40____ There were theories that Hurricanes Irma and Maria helped, as they resulted in much less tourism and thus decreased damage to the surrounding ecosystems.
Experts are continuing to observe the phenomenon to see if there is anything going on that can help save other reefs.
A. It meant their health improved.
B. So they are dying out at alarming rates.
C. Many coral reefs can survive bleaching.
D. Some corals proved no significant bleaching.
E. The worst of bleaching events took place in 2017.
F. But the coral reefs are doing surprisingly well in one region.
G. The warming temperatures of the oceans have also caused great harm.

I grew up knowing I was different, and I hated it.
I was born with a cleft palate (腭裂), and when I started to go to school, my classmates, who were constantly teasing me, made it clear to me how I looked to others: a little girl with a misshapen lip. I couldn't even blow up a balloon without holding my nose.
When schoolmates asked, “What happened to your lip? ”, I would tell them that I'd fallen as a baby and cut it on a piece of glass. Somehow it seemed more acceptable to have suffered an accident than to have been born different. By the age of seven I was convinced that no one outside my own family could ever like me.
And then I entered the second grade, and Mrs. Leonard's class. She was pretty and fragrant, with shining brown hair and warm, dark eyes that smiled even on the rare occasions when her mouth didn't.
Everyone adored her. But no one came to love her more than I did for a special reason.
The time came for the annual hearing tests” iven at our school. I was barely able to hear anything out of one ear, and was not about to reveal yet another problem that would single me out as different. So I cheated. I had learned to watch the other children and raise my hand when they did during group testing. The whisper test”, however, required a different trick. Each child would go to the door of the classroom and close one ear with a finger. Then the teacher would whisper something which the child would repeat. The same thing was done for the other ear. I had discovered that nobody checked to see how tightly the untested ear was being covered, so I merely pretended to block mine.
As usual, I was the last, and all through the testing I wondered what Mrs. Leonard might say to me.
My turn came. I turned my bad ear to her, plugging up the other with my finger, and then gently backed my finger out enough to be able to hear. I waited, and then came the words that changed my life forever.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Mrs. Leonard, the pretty, fragrant teacher I adored, said softy, “I wish you were my little girl. ”

14. Where does the pioneer of the Slow Food Movement come from?
A. Italy. B. Spain. C. France.
15. What caused the start of the Movement?
A. A traditional meal eaten in China.
B. The opening of a fast-food restaurant.

C. To promote better lifestyles
【答案】14. A 15. B 16. C
【解析】
【原文】W: Mike, have you heard of the Slow Food Movement started by Italian Carlo Petrini?
M: Yeah, it’s a response to the popularity of fast food and modern lifestyles. The man initiated the movement because a McDonald’s had opened near the Square of Spain in Rome. He felt it caused the ruin of many valuable traditional things. So he tried to promote healthier ways of eating and living.
W: So, Slow Food just means healthier food, does it?
M: Not exactly. I think it’s more about our lifestyles. We’re always in such a hurry that we don’t have enough time to enjoy our lives.
W: It seems right. Fast food companies say their food is healthy. But for me, the problem is whenever you sit down for a meal, whether in France or China, what you’re given is too similar. It makes eating and life boring. It would be a great loss if we all ate the same food.
M: Yeah, traditional food isn’t going to be lost completely, but we do want as many people as possible to enjoy it. So, the Movement’s main object is to improve the way we live and call on us to enjoy our lives.

A. Fund. B. Stop. C. Overlook. D. Polish.
27 What can be the best title for the text?
A. Capturing the Light in My Life B. Saying Farewell to the Past
C. Affection for Photography Shaped Me. D. The Journey from Cambridge to Berkeley
【答案】24. C 25. D 26. B 27. A

【26题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“For this is, sadly, a farewell: In the face of limited resources”可知,sadly表示遗憾的是,且提到资源有限,推测NPR决定停止13.7频道。故划线词意思是“停止”。故选B。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“But just as I continued taking mental pictures long after I ran out of film those years ago in Cambridge, I know that 13.7 has offered me something that will persist beyond the blog: a particular way of capturing the light. And I know that I’ll continue to write, celebrating science and culture.(但就像多年前在剑桥用完胶卷后,我仍在脑海中不停地拍照一样,我知道13.7为我提供了一种超越博客的东西:一种捕捉光线的特殊方式。我知道我会继续写作,歌颂科学和文化)”结合文章主要讲述了作者十几年前为了记录生活开始随身携带一个小相机,随后发现了NPR的13.7频道,让作者发现写作经验具有启发性。可知,A选项“捕捉我生命中的光”最符合文章标题。故选A。
C
【答案】28. B 29. C 30. B 31. B

根据第一段中“All in all, however, children’s leisure time dropped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%.(然而,总的来说,儿童的休闲时间从1981年的40%下降到了25%) ”;第二段中“A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home.(她说,一个主要原因是越来越多的母亲在外工作)”以及“In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.(相比之下,孩子们和单身母亲在一起的时间只有9个小时)”可知,父母和孩子都缺少闲暇时间,故划线部分的意思是“父母和孩子都缺少闲暇时间”。故选B。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself,(玩耍是孩子探索世界和了解自己最有力的方式)”和“play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to handle their relationships with their peers(玩耍鼓励独立思考,并允许年轻人处理与同龄人的关系)”由此可知,根据作者的观点,如果让孩子以自己的方式和同龄人一起玩,他会发展得更好。故选C。
30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中““Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself,” says T. Berry Brazelton, professor at Harvard Medical School Unstructured play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with their peers, but kids ages 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours a week engaged in it.(哈佛大学医学院教授T. Berry Brazelton说:“游戏是孩子探索世界和了解自己的最有力方式。非结构化的游戏鼓励独立思考,并允许年轻人与同伴协商他们的关系,但3至12岁的孩子每周只花12小时参与游戏。”)”可知,作者对美国孩子的担忧是他们从事越来越多结构化的活动。故选B。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children spent just over an hour a week reading.(尽管努力让孩子们对书籍更感兴趣,孩子们每周花在阅读上的时间还是刚刚超过一个小时)”可推知,大多数父母认为阅读对孩子有益。故选B。
I have written about this characteristic in human nature before with my friend Dan Ariely, who studied this phenomenon extensively after noticing the pricing for subscriptions (订阅) to The Economist.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. A 35. B

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了营销中的诱饵效应,即通过设置较差选项,引导消费者选择目标选项,并说明了其原理是人们通过比较来判断物品价值。
【32题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“In fact, there’s a good chance the marketing department purposely priced the medium soda as a decoy, making you more likely to buy the large soda rather than the small. (事实上,很有可能营销部门故意将中杯汽水定价作为一个decoy,让你更有可能购买大杯汽水而不是小杯。)”可知,营销部门把中杯汽水的价格设置成这样是为了让消费者更多地去买大杯汽水,所以中杯汽水就像一个“诱饵”,用来诱导消费者。故划线词“decoy”意思是“诱饵,陷阱”,与“Trap”同义。故选C项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“I have written about this characteristic in human nature before with my friend Dan Ariely, who studied this phenomenon extensively after noticing the pricing for subscriptions (订阅) to The Economist. (我之前和我的朋友丹·艾瑞里写过关于人性的这一特点,他在注意到《经济学人》的订阅价格后,对这一现象进行了广泛的研究。)”以及后文对《经济学人》订阅价格设置的描述和实验结果可知,提到《经济学人》的订阅价格是为了举例说明营销中的诱饵效应案例。故选B项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Brain scientists call this effect “asymmetric dominance (不对称优势)”, and it means that people tend toward the choice nearest clearly inferior (较差的) option. Marketing professors call it the decoy effect which is certainly easier to remember. (大脑科学家称这种效应为“不对称优势”,这意味着人们倾向于选择最接近明显较差选项的那个选择。营销学教授称之为诱饵效应,这个名字当然更容易记住。)”可知,诱饵效应会把消费者推向目标选项。故选A项。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Value is almost never absolute; rather, we decide an object’s value relative to our other choices. If more options are introduced, the value equation changes. (价值几乎从来都不是绝对的;相反,我们是相对于其他选择来决定一个物品的价值。如果引入更多的选择,价值等式就会改变。)”可知,一个物品的价值是通过比较选项来确定的。故选B项。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Mrs. Leonard, the pretty, fragrant teacher I adored, said softy, “I wish you were my little girl. ”

From that day on, I had a newfound confidence.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Mrs. Leonard, the pretty, fragrant teacher I adored, said softly, “I wish you were my little girl. ”I was completely astonished by what I heard. Tears welled up in my eyes and trickled down my cheeks. I couldn’t believe that someone as wonderful as Mrs. Leonard would actually say that to me. She didn’t treat me as if I were different, and with her words, she made me forget who I was. In that moment, all my insecurities and fears disappeared, replaced by a feeling of being truly loved and accepted.
From that day on, I had a newfound confidence. I walked tall and proud, with my head held high. I no longer felt like an outcast because of my cleft palate. Mrs. Leonard’s kind words had a profound impact on me, and I made a promise to myself to never let anyone’s judgment hold me back again. I started to embrace my differences and realized that they made me unique. And I will always be grateful to Mrs. Leonard for giving me the strength to do so.
