Our room was on the second floor but you could still hear the roar of the ocean and see the stars at night. I used to take long walks along the water. The food in town was wonderful and the people were very friendly. The area was very quiet, peaceful and fairly deserted (空寂无人的).
The last evening of our vacation, however, we all heard strange footsteps following closely behind us as we were walking up to our room in the holiday center. We turned around and noticed a fairly young man moving very rapidly across the beach and getting close to us. He was tall and wore a baseball cap. We couldn’t see his face and he was approaching (接近) us very rapidly. The man’s actions made my dad very anxious. Dad warned us that we’d better try to make it to our hotel room as quickly as possible. I didn’t like my dad’s voice. I could hear anxiety in it. It was late and we were all alone. We didn’t have any cellphones on us. I never saw Dad as anxious as he was then and I knew that something was terribly wrong. The sense of fear started to overwhelm Mom and me. We had had such a good time in town. Now, the night was rapidly turning into a dangerous situation.
We could hear the man’s footsteps getting closer. Dad’s face was almost pale. The so-called intruder (侵入者) had moved nearer and nearer when all of a sudden, the nearby vending (自动贩卖) machine started going crazy and spitting out cans of soda! The noise actually scared the intruder and he ran out of sight. My parents were shaking, but we all turned around to see who had put money into the vending machine downstairs, and actually saved us, but no one was around at all. Not a soul. It’s one vacation I will never forget.
4. Where did the author spend her vacation?

6. What was the author’s father’s reaction on the last evening of their vacation?
A. He was somewhat fearful. B. He didn’t know what to do at all.
C. He didn’t take what happened seriously. D. He was quite calm and controlled the situation.
7. What helped them get out of the trouble?
A. Their quick action. B. Timely help from a young man.
C. The young man’s warning. D. The noise from the vending machine.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. A 7. D

When we see a person in trouble, the first idea that comes to our mind is to lend a hand. But what if we see an animal in trouble, does the same rule apply?
This question was raised after a group of penguins (企鹅) were saved from an icy gully (峡谷) in Antarctica. It was filmed for the BBC wildlife series Dynasties. The film crew were anxious when they saw that a group of penguins had fallen into a gully and been trapped with their young. They built a slope (斜坡) so that a few of the penguins could save themselves.
The case has taken the international media by storm. Viewers watching this film sighed in relief. “I’m so glad. I understand not taking action directly, but a helping hand isn’t bothering, right?” viewer Kathryn Shaw said on her Facebook.
However others think human interference (干涉) is unnatural. “You can’t have sunshine throughout your life. To have done anything else would only make matters worse.” said the show’s creator David Attenborough, according to TheTimes.
In this case, however, Mike Gunton, the executive producer of the series, said that this was a one-off situation. “There were no animals going to suffer by interfering. You weren’t touching the animals and it was just felt by doing this …They had the chance not to have to keep slipping down the slope.” he told the BBC.
Such cases are familiar to Paul Nicklen, wildlife photographer for National Geographic. He told Metro, “If it’s ever a predator (捕食者) situation, no matter how gut-wrenching, you stay out of the way. Even when you’re watching a male polar bear eat a baby bear.”
“There’s no rule book in those situations. You can only respond to the facts that are right there in front of you.” Will Lawson, the show’s director, told Daily Mail.
8. What has led to a heated media discussion?
A. The rescue of penguins from a gully.
B. People’s various opinions on penguins.
C. Some penguins’ sufferings in a gully.
D. Ways of filming the series Dynasties.
9. Who holds a positive attitude towards human interference?
A. David Attenborough. B. Will Lawson.
C. Paul Nicklen. D. Kathryn Shaw.
10. Which of the following best explains the word “gutwrenching” underlined in Paragraph 6?
A. Making one confused. B. Making one heartbroken.
C. Putting one in danger. D. Making one amazed.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Necessity of Lending a Hand to Animals
B. Protect Animals From Dying Out
C. Human Interference on Dangerous Animals
D. Help Animals in Trouble or Not
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. B 11. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了当动物们面临危险时,我们是否要伸出援救之手,以及如何去保护它们脱险。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The film crew were anxious when they saw that a group of penguins had fallen into a gully and been trapped with their young. They built a slope (斜坡) so that a few of the penguins could save themselves.(当摄制组看到一群企鹅和它们的幼崽掉进沟里被困在一起时,他们非常焦虑。他们建了一个斜坡,好让几只企鹅能自救。)”和第三段的“The case has taken the international media by storm.(这起案件引起了国际媒体的广泛关注。)”可知,从峡谷中救出企鹅这一事件引起了大家的热议。故选A。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的““I’m so glad. I understand not taking action directly, but a helping hand isn’t bothering, right?” viewer Kathryn Shaw said on her Facebook.(“我很高兴。我理解不直接采取行动,但伸出援助之手并不麻烦,对吧?”观众Kathryn Shaw在她的脸书上说。)”可推知,Kathryn Shaw对帮助动物是很赞成的,故选D。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据上文语境大家对干涉动物的行为有不同观点,结合下文的“you stay out of the way. Even when you’re watching a male polar bear eat a baby bear(你给我闪开。即使你在看一只雄性北极熊吃掉一只幼熊)”可知,这是个捕食的情景,无论你是多么的心碎,你都不能干预。结合四个选项可知,gutwrenching意为“令人痛苦的”,和Making one heartbroken(令人心碎)意思相近,故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。阅读文章,并结合第一段“When we see a person in trouble, the first idea that comes to our mind is to lend a hand. But what if we see an animal in trouble, does the same rule apply?(当我们看到一个人有麻烦时,我们想到的第一个想法是伸出援手。但是,如果我们看到一只动物陷入困境,同样的规则也适用吗?)”和第二段“This question was raised after a group of penguins (企鹅) were saved from an icy gully (峡谷) in Antarctica.(这个问题是在一群企鹅从南极洲的冰沟中获救后提出的。)”可知,本文就救助企鹅的视频引发的热议讲述了当动物面临危险时,我们是否要伸出援救之手,以及如何去保护它们脱险。因此,本文的最佳标题应为D选项“Help Animals in Trouble or Not(是否帮助有困难的动物)”。故选D。
D
In Shakespeare’s HAMLET, Polonius asks the prince, “What are you reading, my Lord?” Hamlet replies, “Words, words, words.” Either, as is likely, Hamlet wasn’t interested in what he was reading, or, less likely, he didn’t understand the words he was reading. In this case, Polonius should have lent Hamlet a good dictionary.
Dictionaries are essential tools for people who like to read. There are so many words in English that even the most educated person will sometimes meet an unfamiliar word and have to look it up. Languages keep changing, too, with new words constantly being added and new meanings being applied to old words. For example, the 12th edition of Xinhua Dictionary, the most popular dictionary in China, has added new words such as “chu xin” “fen si” “er wei ma” etc. As for new meanings, “girl” once meant “a small child of either sex”. And “naughty” didn’t mean you were “enjoying playing tricks”; it meant you were poor.
A printed dictionary can’t keep pace with all the changes, which is why most dictionaries have websites and apps to help you keep up-to-date. However, I still prefer printed dictionaries because they give you more definitions and more examples of how a word is used. Even a simple word, such as “set”, has 430 meanings (the most of English words) but an online dictionary would only offer two or three. A printed dictionary also gives you the opportunity to discover new words as you run your finger down the page looking for the word you want.
There is no “official” English dictionary, but the Oxford English Dictionary is considered to be the best. For English language learners, however, I would recommend the Collins COBUILD Dictionary for Advanced Learners. Hamlet, by the way, was Danish and a college student. He would have appreciated the Collins Dictionary to help himself with his words, words, words. This dictionary has over 40,000 words and gives you full-sentence definitions with good examples of how words are used.
12. What’s the function of paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To let the readers know more about HAMLET.
C. To arouse readers’ interest in Shakespeare.
D. To explain when it’s necessary to use a dictionary.
13. Why does the author mention “girl” in paragraph 2?
A. To show how powerful Xinhua Dictionary is.
B. To support the idea: languages keep changing.
C. To prove new words are being added to dictionaries.
D. To imply “girl” also means “boy” in some cases.
14. What’s the author’s attitude to printed dictionaries?
A. Supportive. B. Indifferent.
C. Negative. D. Critical.
15. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph?
A. To introduce the history of dictionaries.
B. To call on learners to use dictionaries.
C. To recommend Collins Dictionary.
D. To explain why Hamlet likes Collins.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. A 15. C

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章借《哈姆雷特》的对话引出词典,阐述语言变化使词典不断更新,表明自己偏爱纸质词典,最后为英语学习者推荐词典。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“In Shakespeare’s HAMLET, Polonius asks the prince, “What are you reading, my Lord?” Hamlet replies, “Words, words, words.” Either, as is likely, Hamlet wasn’t interested in what he was reading, or, less likely, he didn’t understand the words he was reading. In this case, Polonius should have lent Hamlet a good dictionary.(在莎士比亚的《哈姆雷特》中,波洛涅斯问王子:“殿下,您在看什么?”哈姆雷特答道:“单词,单词,单词。”这多半是因为他对所读内容毫无兴趣,抑或——虽可能性较小——他根本读不懂那些文字。若是后者,波洛涅斯真该借他一本好词典)”可推知,第一段通过《哈姆雷特》中的对话,引出了词典这一话题,为后文讨论词典的重要性等内容做铺垫。故选A项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Languages keep changing, too, with new words constantly being added and new meanings being applied to old words. For example, the 12th edition of Xinhua Dictionary, the most popular dictionary in China, has added new words such as “chu xin” “fen si” “er wei ma” etc. As for new meanings, “girl” once meant “a small child of either sex”.(语言也在不断变化,新词不断被添加,旧词也被赋予新的含义。例如,中国最受欢迎的词典《新华字典》第12版增加了“初心”“粉丝”“二维码”等新词。至于新词义,“girl”曾经的意思是“任何性别的小孩”)”可推知,作者提到“girl”是为了举例说明语言是在不断变化的,旧词会被赋予新的含义,以此支持“语言不断变化”这一观点。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“However, I still prefer printed dictionaries because they give you more definitions and more examples of how a word is used.(然而,我仍然更喜欢纸质词典,因为它们能给出更多的定义和更多的单词使用示例)”可知,作者更喜欢纸质词典,认为它能给出更多定义和示例。由此可推知,作者对纸质词典持支持的态度。故选A项。
15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“For English language learners, however, I would recommend the Collins COBUILD Dictionary for Advanced Learners.(然而,对于英语学习者来说,我推荐《柯林斯高阶英语学习词典》)”以及后文对这本词典的介绍可知,作者写最后一段的目的是向英语学习者推荐《柯林斯高阶英语学习词典》。故选C项。

Mondays are kind of annoying. ___16___ A recent survey says that most people get the pre-work “Sunday blues”. Starting your Monday feeling sad, anxious and unorganized is hardly the way to kick off a healthy week.
The solution? Set aside a little time on Sunday to purposefully prepare yourself for the five days ahead, suggests women’s health expert Marsha Hudnall. ___17___
Do some meal preparations.
Figuring out what to have for dinner on weeknights can be surprisingly stressful. Stretching out a menu plan on Sunday and swinging by the grocery store for ingredients will help you eat well. Go a step further by chopping and cooking vegetables and a protein (like a roast chicken or scrambled eggs). ___18___ Or finally attempt a different diet you’ve been meaning to try. For easy dinner planning, just order, and you’ll have a week’s worth of raw materials for delicious and healthy meals.
Start a Sunday stress-relief habit.
“To be healthy, we have to take care of body and mind,” says Hudnall. Stress has a major impact on health and our ability to concentrate. ___19___ Four ideas to try: a guided meditation with the help of an app; forest bathing-a practice known as shinrin-yoku in Japan, which basically means taking a long walk or hike in a wooded area; gentle exercise like yoga; or time cuddling and playing with your pet.
___20___
Why not prepare your favorite clothes for Monday? Studies show that what you wear can have a significant effect on your mood. So make Monday the day you wear your favorite clothes or show the latest addition to your wardrobe (衣橱). It’s also a good idea to get some nice coffee or music ready, which will give you something to look forward to on your Monday commute.
A. Give yourself something to look forward on Monday.
B. Even Sunday afternoons turn sour as we think of the workweek ahead.
C. Then all you have to do is heat and plate when you come home from work.
D. Therefore, starting a Sunday stress-relieving habit can begin a week feeling strong and focused.
E. Try creating a relaxing and winding down Sunday night so that you can recharge and get ready for Monday.

However, others think human interference (干涉) is unnatural.

C To arouse readers’ interest in Shakespeare.
D. To explain when it’s necessary to use a dictionary.
13. Why does the author mention “girl” in paragraph 2?
A. To show how powerful Xinhua Dictionary is.
B. To support the idea: languages keep changing.
C. To prove new words are being added to dictionaries.
D To imply “girl” also means “boy” in some cases.
