He is a hard worker, he has good ideas, and he doesn't follow the crowd. So why does he do so badly in his exams? Because he suffers from anxiety, he lacks confidence, his brain is so active, and he thinks too much. When IT comes to exams, his intelligence actually works against him. I wish we could help him. IT seems so unfair that a person's future can be determined by how will they perform on one particular day. IT is unfair, but life is unfair. We must try to help him by showing him how to keep calm in stressful situations. How do we do that? I can't say that i'm exactly an expert of dealing with stress. Although I am Better, Better than I used to be. I can help him. I always think that exercise is a great way for dealing with stress and anxiety. When you've exhausted yourself while doing exercise, you don't have the energy to be nervous. That is so right. I always feel calm after working out in the gym. Thank you very much. Thank you. Doctor Johnson. Well, IT is really great to be back at university again. The thing that I want to to tell you today is this education is important. When I came to the U. S, I was only thinking about being a carpenter, but I could not read the newspaper, and I could not understand the news on television or movies or anything like this. So I entered the city college to take english classes for foreign students. I was very proud that I was going to a college because no one in my family ever went to any college or to any university. You know, when you're fifteen years old in my country, you finish school and then you learn a trade. And that's exactly what I did. When I was fifteen years old, I learned how to be a carpenter. A year later, I came to america. Luckily, I met a very good teacher who encouraged me to take some math classes, business classes and history classes, and I became a full time college student. And today, when I look back, i'm so happy, because you never know where life will take you. All of a sudden I started making money because I was really good at math. You know, how to work out everything with math is so important. This is something that I learned when I started my own business, which is doing really well. Thank you very much. Thank you. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mails are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words. However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweetmeats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them. And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next? English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it. 24. According to the passage ______. A. boxing rings should be round B. pineapples are the apples on the pine tree C. there should be an egg in an eggplant D. sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things 25. Which of the following is the correct plural form (复数形式)? A. Beeth. B. Meese. C. Geese. D. Tooth. 26. Which of the following has the similar meaning? A. Quite a lot and quite a few. B. Overlook and oversee. C. A wise man and a wise guy. D. Hot as hell and cold as hell. 27. Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ______. A. lazy B. crazy C. clever D. stupid 【答案】24. D 25. C 26. A 27. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章列举了一些英语词汇,以说明人类的智慧和创造性。 【24题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段最后一句“Sweetmeats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.(sweetmeats是糖果,而sweetbreads不是甜食,却是肉)”可知, sweetmeats和sweetbreads两个词的意思不同,指的是不同的事物。故选D。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段最后一句“One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?(一只goose,两只geese——那么一只moose,两只meese?)”可知, 正确的复数形式是geese。故选C。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段第二句“How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike?(为什么overlook和oversee意思相反,而quite a lot和quite a few意思相近?)”可知, quite a lot与quite a few表达意思相同。故选A。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段第一句“English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings.(英语是人类而不是计算机发明的,它反映了人类的创造力)”可知, 英语是被人创造的, 它反映了人类的创造性和智慧。故选C。 C I live in a small town near Xing’an in Guilin. Lowndes County Extension agent (代理人) Joshua Dawson, helped seventh-grade students attending J. L. Newbern Middle School build raised bed plant boxes to grow crops. Dawson’s work with the school gardens began in 2014 as a part of the Valdosta School Garden and Orchard Project. Through support from local businesses and members of the community, it is used to introduce Valdosta elementary and middle school students to gardening and agriculture. Some of the crops grown in the gardens include sweet potatoes, collards, carrots and kale. The harvested (收获的) produce is served by the schools’ dining rooms during lunch and students are allowed to take produce home depending on the harvest size. Helping Dawson with the gardens are members of the local Master Gardener program. With his daily responsibilities as a County Extension agent, Dawson depends heavily on their support. “Without the Master Gardeners, I don’t know if any of this would be possible. They look after the gardens and work with the teachers more closely than I, and provide necessary feet on the ground for a lot of things,” Dawson said. At the beginning, the students expressed worries about working in the garden, but Dawson said those doubts disappeared quickly. “I like watering the plants and working with the soil” said Anthony Aikens, a seventh-grader Anthony, who said his favorite subject is science, wants to be a zoologist or a full-time gardener when he grows up. Dr Elena Ponder, principal of J. L. Newbern Middle School, said this project has attracted many students. She said working in the garden provides students with a cross-curriculum (交叉课程) where they apply different skills to solve problems. “Once you plant a garden, you have to attend to that garden. That shows you have the work ethic (职业道德), patience and time to put into something. That will translate into work-related skills they can apply to jobs in the future,” she said. 32. I studied three years in a country school, which is faraway. However, it has a good environment and strict but kind teachers, so I loved the school and all my teachers very much. One Friday, just as we began to read books in reading class at our desks, our teacher, Mrs. Hill, said that she needed to be out of the classroom for a few minutes. She asked the class to read in silence while she was gone. And she said that those who didn’t read books in silence would have to answer to her when she returned. It was well-known that Mrs. Hill was strict. So we had to be on our best behavior. But that Friday, Mrs. Hill hadn’t been gone for ten seconds before some students in the classroom started to talk. From one corner of the classroom I heard Josh ask Nick, “Can I trade my candies for your toy?” At the other end of the room I heard Samantha tell Kayla, “Let’s sit together on the bus for the museum field trip tomorrow.” And so it went all around me, until about half of the students talked with each other. After a while, I, too, forgot about Mrs. Hill’s instructions. I turned back and asked my friend Liza, “Can I borrow your storybook and keep it for a day?” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, Mrs. Hill walked into the classroom. The whole class returned to silence immediately. And we were full of fear. Mrs. Hill slowly looked around the classroom and said, “If you were talking while I was gone, then please stand up.” The guilt (内疚) suddenly weighed heavily on me. “I shouldn’t have talked while she was not in the classroom. And now I should be honest and admit my mistake bravely. This is what my parents have always told me, “I thought. Then, I gathered my courage to stand up, worrying about the punishment that waited for me. Then I looked around. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 To my surprise, no one followed me. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With Mrs. Hill’s encouragement, another student stood up. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: To my surprise, no one followed me. I lowered my head alone and was filled with fear. After looking a-round for a while, Mrs. Hill walked towards me. Strangely, she asked in a soft voice, “Why did you dare to stand up?” I said I wanted to be honest and that I realized what I had done was wrong. Unexpectedly, Mrs. Hill was quite amazed by my answer and praised me for that. Then she returned to the front of the classroom and explained why we should be honest. With Mrs. Hill’s encouragement, another student stood up. Then more students followed until about half of the students stood up. Seeing it, Mrs. Hill praised us for our courage. Then, she asked us to sit down. We continued reading books. After we finished, Mrs. Hill reminded us to remember that everyone should be responsible for his behavior. We all agreed with her. And I was happy that in a way I set a good example to my classmates. 词汇激活 行为类 ①走向:walk towards/step towards/come up to ②想要做某事:want to do/intend to do/would like to do ③继续做某事:continue doing/go on doing 情绪类 ①满是恐惧:be filled with fear/be full of horror ②高兴的: happy/delighted 【点睛】[高分句型1]I said I wanted to be honest and that I realized what I had done was wrong. A boxing rings should be round B. pineapples are the apples on the pine tree C. there should be an egg in an eggplant D. sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things 25. A. lazy B. crazy C. clever D. stupid C I live in a small town near Xing’an in Guilin. You can’t see it on the map of China, because it is too small. The air here is fresh. There are not many tall buildings in our town. The tallest building is in our school. There are four hundred students and twenty-five teachers in our school. In the front of the school, there is a playground. I often play basketball with my classmates on it. There is a little garden behind our school. And we can grow beautiful flowers and plant trees there. Next to the garden, there is an orange orchard (果园). You can hear birds singing everywhere. There is a river not far from our school. In summer, we usually go swimming with our teachers in it. We study Chinese, English, math and other subjects at school. The teachers are very nice. We love our school. 28. The writer lives ________. A. in a small town B. in the city of Guilin C. in Xing’an D. in a tall building 29. How many students are there in the school? A. 4,025. B. 425. C. 245. D. 400. 30. Which of the following is TRUE? A There are many tall buildings in the town. B. Behind the school there is a garden. C. There is a river in the school. D. People can hear students singing everywhere. 31. What’s the best title of the passage? A. The Garden B. A Small Town C. Our School D. The Best Building D Middle school students in Valdosta are learning the importance of agriculture. 32. What is the purpose of the Valdosta School Garden and Orchard Project? A. To serve students healthy lunches with home-grown vegetables. B. To share the latest agricultural information with local farmers. C. To let students know more about gardening and farming. D. To build new school gardens in Valdosta. 33. How do the Master Gardeners support Dawson? A. By introducing him to Dr. Elena Ponder. B. By helping him take care of the gardens. C. By training him in gardening. D. By raising money for him. 34. What was the students’ attitude to the project at first? A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Uninterested. D. Hopeful. 35. What did Dr. Elena Ponder say about the project? A. It has changed public opinion on the agricultural industry. B. It is beneficial to students’ future development. C. It took up too much of students’ study time. D. It needs more public attention 第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下列短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 This is the season for holiday travel! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
