When I first met George, I was in my early 30s. My children were just entering school life allowing me to escape from endless housework. At 65, George had recently left work and was seeking a rewarding hobby for his golden years. For both of us, we loved painting and we met at a local TAFE painting class. Thus began a friendship that was to last for 25 years—until the day he died.
George was an energetic man who lived life to the full. He loved his family, his friends, and was loyal and outspoken. As the only male in a painting class full of women, George quite enjoyed it. He ruled the roost (栖息处) and we were his hens. He loved his singular (单一的) role and looked after his hens with the same attention he gave to everything.
He took to painting with passion and devotion. He carefully housed his expensive painting tools in a box—a red metal tool box—built to bear hard knocks. Not fancy, but smooth and shiny and very red.
In 2004, I learned that he was very ill and went to visit him. “He's very confused and may not recognize you,” Penny, his daughter, warned. But as I bent over, George opened his eyes. “Betty!” he said, and with surprising strength, held my hand. “I've always been hoping to leave my box to you. I'm afraid I can't paint anymore, and you have the best talent and are most likely to use it,” he said. With tears in my eyes, I accepted the gift on the proviso (附带条件) he could take it back at any time. He never did. He died two days later.
Today I still use much of his equipment kept in the box. The box is still in good shape, very red. The original shop sticker is still firmly in place although the price has worn off.
But that's all right because to my mind some things, like friendship, are beyond price.
4. Why did George go to painting class?
A. He wanted to please his children.
B. He wanted to enjoy school life again.
C. He wanted to make new friends there.
D. He wanted to develop a worthwhile hobby.
5. What's the author's purpose of writing the text?
A. To introduce a popular hobby. B. To describe a precious friendship.
C. To remember a red tool box. D. To appreciate her friend's help.
6. Which word can describe George according to the text?
A. Honest. B. Brave.
C. Caring. D. Lucky.
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. The tool box is well kept by the author.
B. George took the red tool box back in the end.
C. George was shy and didn't talk much in the class.
D. The author thought their painting class was boring.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. A

Many of us start exercising in the hope of losing unwanted pounds. Unquestionably, aiming to be more active is a good thing. But if the main reason is to lose weight, your resolution could very well come to nothing.
For starters, exercise is typically futile for weight loss. Take walking for example. A 150-pound person who walks for 30 minutes will burn, on average, around 140 calories. That’s equal to one can of soda — not exactly a great return on your investment (投入,投资) of time and effort. It’s much easier just to skip the soda.
When exercise is added to a diet, the results are equally unimpressive. Researchers found that a combination of dieting and exercising produced no greater weight loss than dieting alone after six months. At 12 months, the diet-and-exercise combination showed an advance, but it was slight — about 4 pounds on average.
In studies where exercise has produced meaningful weight loss, participants burned at least 400 to 500 calories per session on five or more days a week. To achieve that, a 150-pound person would need to walk a minimum of 90 minutes or run 30 minutes per day. In short, sessions need to go well beyond what most of us are willing or able to do. And even if we manage to make that much effort, our bodies often compensate (弥补) by boosting (推动,促进) desire for food and slowing down metabolism (新陈代谢), which over time limit how many pounds we lose.
When exercise fails to meet our weight-loss expectations, we often stop working out. Perhaps the biggest problem with exercising to drop pounds is that it turns physical activity into punishment — a price we have to pay for a slimmer body. How many times have you heard someone say “I’ll need to do extra exercise” after eating too much? We treat exercise as a form of self-punishment for being “bad”. In this case, we’re unlikely to keep doing it for very long. The conclusion is that we’re more likely to treat exercise positively and actually do it when we focus on our well-being rather than our weight.
8. What does the underlined word “futile” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. necessary B. useless C. basic D. painful
9. Compared with dieting alone, what can we learn about the combination of dieting and exercising?
A. It’s less effective than dieting alone.
B. It’s much more useful within six months.
C It shows little advantage after six months.
D. It displays an impressive advantage after a year.
10. Why does the body’s compensation mechanism affect weight loss?
A. It increases food desire and slows down metabolism.
B. It makes people burn more calories during exercise.
C. It helps people do more exercise to lose weight.
D. It makes people pay more attention to their well-being.
11. What is true according to the passage?
A. Exercise is not useful at all for people to lose weight.
B. Dieting is the only effective way to lose weight.
C. The body’s metabolism plays a key role in weight loss.
D. Focusing on well-being rather than weight helps people keep exercising.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要论述以减重为目的锻炼效果有限,分析其原因,并指出关注健康而非体重更易让人坚持运动。
【8题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“Take walking for example. A 150-pound person who walks for 30 minutes will burn, on average, around 140 calories. That’s equal to one can of soda — not exactly a great return on your investment (投入,投资) of time and effort. It’s much easier just to skip the soda.(以散步为例。一个体重150磅的人散步30分钟,平均大约能燃烧140卡路里。这相当于一罐苏打水的热量——对你投入的时间和精力来说,回报并不算高。不喝苏打水要容易得多。)”可知,运动减重的回报低,效果差,故“futile”意为“无用的”,与“useless”含义相近。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Researchers found that a combination of dieting and exercising produced no greater weight loss than dieting alone after six months. At 12 months, the diet-and-exercise combination showed an advance, but it was slight — about 4 pounds on average.(研究人员发现,在六个月后,节食和运动相结合的减重效果并不比单独节食更好。在12个月时,节食加运动的组合显示出了优势,但优势很小——平均约4磅。)”可知,与单独节食相比,节食加运动的组合在六个月后几乎没有优势。故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“And even if we manage to make that much effort, our bodies often compensate (弥补) by boosting (推动,促进) desire for food and slowing down metabolism (新陈代谢), which over time limit how many pounds we lose.(即使我们努力付出了那么多,我们的身体也常常会通过增加食欲和减缓新陈代谢来进行补偿,这会随着时间的推移限制我们减重的幅度。)”可知,身体的补偿机制会影响减重,是因为它会增加食欲并减缓新陈代谢。故选A项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“The conclusion is that we’re more likely to treat exercise positively and actually do it when we focus on our well-being rather than our weight.(结论是,当我们关注健康而非体重时,我们更有可能以积极的态度对待运动,并真正去做。)”可知,关注健康而非体重有助于人们坚持运动,该表述符合文意。故选D项。
D
By examining tiny vessels (血管) inside a person’s eyes, doctors might one day be able to predict that person’s risk of early death, according to a new study.
Past research had shown the retina (视网膜), light-sensitive layers of nerve tissue at the back of the eye, as a possible indicator of a person’s bjological age. The retina offers a unique, accessible “window” to evaluate underlying pathological (病理的) processes of some serious diseases that are associated with increased risks of death. In the new study, the researchers turned to a deep-learning technique that could predict a person’s risk of death by analyzing the biological age of the retina.
Their deep-learning model, a type of machine learning and artificial intelligence that’s modeled to learn similar to a human brain, analyzed more than 80.000 images of fundus (眼底) - the internal back surface of the eye that includes the retina. They obtained the images from nearly 47.000 people between the ages of 40 and 69, stored in the UK. Biobank. TO figure out whether their model was accurate, they first analyzed more than 19,000 fundus images taken from more than 1,100 participants who were in relatively good health. The idea was that the retinal biological ages of these people should be fairly similar to their chronological age (实际年龄) .
The model was fairly accurate in predicting retinal ages, with an accuracy of within 3.5 years to chronological ages. They then used the model to assess the remaining nearly 36,000 participants’ fundus photos collected across a span of 11 years. They found that 51 percent of the participants had a “retinal age gap” - the difference between biological and chronological age - of more than 3 years, 28 percent had a gap of more than 5 years and 4.5 percent had a gap of more than 10 years. In other words, these participants had “older” eyes compared to their chronological age.
Those who had larger age gaps had a 49-67 percent higher risk of death from causes other than cardiovascular disease or cancer. With every one year increase in the age gap, the risk of death increased by 2 percent for any cause and 3 percent for causes other than cardiovascular disease and cancer.
12. What can we know about the retina?
A. It causes serious diseases.
B. It indicates the risk of death.
C. It speeds pathological processes.
D. It improves people’s physical health.
13. How do researchers know the retinal age?
A. By examining the nerve tissue.
B. By studying the human brain,
C. By checking the eyesight.
D. By analyzing fundus images.
14. What percentage of the participants had the largest retinal age gap?
A. 3.5%. B. 4.5%. C. 28%. D. 51%
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. A new study is conducted on tiny vessels
B. Image technology is used to predict diseases
C. Eyes may reveal a person’s biological age
D. A deep-leaning on the retina is necessary
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. B 15. C

How to Be a Successful High School Student
Being a successful high school student requires both patience and power. There may be many distractions (分心事) during ten years. To become a successful student, you have to say “no” to them. ___16___ The following are some tips you can try.
Remember that school is important.
The truth is that school is important. ___17___ Even if you decide not to go to college, school does help a lot socially. It’s important to have fun and have lots of activities, but school should always be your number one work. Never take homework and tests lightly.
___18___
Make sure you have everything you need. If your teacher likes to lecture, have a notebook to help you remember. Keep papers in order. They’ll be easier to find later. If your binder (活页夹) starts to get full, put old papers into another binder to keep at home. This way you won’t have to put them around, but they will be there when studying for tests.
Make friends.
There’s too much going on to worry about: who’s friends with whom, who the popular people are. The best thing to do is be friendly to and with everyone. ___19___ Get into the habit of saying “Hi” to people and not being afraid to talk to new classmates. The more comfortable you become with people, the more people will like you.
Take part in a sport.
It’s easy to forget to stay in shape when the work becomes more, so joining a team makes it less worry. If you’re going for all three seasons, that’s great, but make sure you’re being practical with your time. Try your hardest at both your sport and your schoolwork and you should be more than great. ___20___
A. Make a plan.
B. Stay organized.
C. Be confident and be yourself.
D. You need it to get into a good college and later get a good career that will support you for the rest of your life.
E. Make friends with someone who takes school seriously.

A He wanted to please his children.
C
Many of us start exercising in the hope of losing unwanted pounds. Unquestionably, aiming to be more active is a good thing. But if the main reason is to lose weight, your resolution could very well come to nothing.
For starters, exercise is typically futile for weight loss. Take walking for example. A 150-pound person who walks for 30 minutes will burn, on average, around 140 calories. That’s equal to one can of soda — not exactly a great return on your investment (投入,投资) of time and effort. It’s much easier just to skip the soda.
When exercise is added to a diet the results are equally unimpressive.

B. It’s much more useful within six months.
C. It shows little advantage after six months.
