California’s Hidden Gems
Lost Coast
An experienced hiker’s paradise, California’s Lost Coast stretches from Shelter Cove to Mattole Beach, about 75 miles. If that’s too ambitious, drive the Mattole Loop instead, stopping to explore Humboldt Redwoods State Park, home to Avenue of the Giants, and the town of Ferndale, recognized by its Victorian architecture.
Mono Lake
Otherworldly in a number of ways, Mono Lake is an ancient saline lake on California’s eastern edge. No fish swim here, but brine shrimp do, and those draw myriad bird species that migrate along the Pacific Flyway. Distinct limestone formations called tufa stand out — literally and figuratively — at Mono Lake.
Point Reyes
Point Reyes is pleasantly quiet, especially along its coastal trails. Look for wildflowers and endemic animals on Tomales Point Trail — which rambles for nearly 10 miles on this special, skinny peninsula, delivering gorgeous, foggy views of the Ocean.
Trinity Alps
Another stunning preserve in Northern California, Trinity Alps Wilderness awe s visitors with its alpine lakes and granite peaks. It’s an excellent option for day hiking, like Hidden Lake Trail, but also for multiday backpacking trips such as the 18.6-mile Canyon Creek Lakes Trail.
Shasta Lake
This sprawling reservoir might best be experienced via houseboat. Once on board your floating accommodations, try your hand at all the water sports: swimming, water skiing, fishing, jet skiing, and more, all with regal Mount Shasta in the background.
1. What can you do in Point Reyes?
A. Enjoy fantastic views. B. Visit a natural preserve.
C. Climb sharp peaks. D. Try some water sports.
2. What is the best choice for people carrying binoculars and bird field guide?
A. Shasta Lake. B. Point Reyes. C. Mono Lake. D. Lost Coast.
3. Where would this passage most probably come from?

I was born in a small town in Pakistan called Quetta in 1980. When I was a little boy of about ten years old. I developed an interest in calligraphy. Back then we only had a TV channel with limited programs, One of the programs was about learning calligraphy. I was engaged and spent several years learning different calligraphy scripts (笔迹) in the Urdu language.
After graduation, I came to Dubai, UAE. Falling in love with the architecture and high-rise buildings, I wanted to shoot the amazing beauty form different angles. So I bought a camera and learned photography, joined photography groups and attended workshops. After few years, I got bored of photographing landscapes and cityscapes.
Seven years ago, while going through the photography blogs and looking through others’ works. I read the term called “light painting”. a photography technique that allows you to draw in space. I started experimenting with that and soon it hit me: why not bring back my passion for calligraphy using light painting technique? Since that day. I’ve been drawing light calligraphy. To achieve the best results. I decided to build the lights myself. The best part about my work is that they are not photoshopped. I prefer to get the results straight out of the camera. I don’t even turn over the images. To achieve that, I have to write in reverse (倒置) and that took a lot of practice to get it right.
Currently, I’m working on the idea of bringing abandoned places back to life, including buildings which have lost their charm and are hidden in darkness. Through my photography, I try to employ light calligraphy by writing a word that attaches a deep meaning to those places and telling stories behind them. In this way, I hope people will revisit these places and appreciate the real reason for their construction.
4. What can be implied from the author’s experience in Quetta?
A. He had access to plenty art resources.
B. He was fond of calligraphy channels.
C. He grasped scripts of many languages.
D. He was willing to dig into calligraphy.
5. What made the author interested in taking pictures in Dubai?
A. Visual impacts of structures. B. Remarkable urban planning.
C. Mysterious building stories. D. Odd angles of architecture.
6. How did the author enhance the effects of light calligraphy?
A. By learning from others. B. By sticking to originality.
C. By beautifying his photos. D. By drawing in open space.
7. What is the author’s role in practising his current idea?
A. A writer putting down real thoughts. B. An educator spreading sound values.
C An artist regenerating forgotten sites. D. A historian looking for ignored areas.

Years ago I spoke with a 16-year-old girl who was considering the idea of having a computer companion in the future, and she described the upside to me. It’s not that the robot she had imagined was so inspiring. It’s that she had already found people to be so disappointing. And now, for the first time, she explained to me, people have options. Back then I thought her comments seemed prescient Now I find them timely.
This girl had grown up in a time when conversational machines were presented as empathy devices that could understand her. And so it seemed natural to her that other machines would expand the range of conversation. But there is something she may have been too young to understand or, like a lot of us, tend to forget when we talk to machines. These robots can perform empathy in a conversation about your friend, your mother, or your child, but they have no experience of any of these relationships. Their conversations about life occupy the realm of the as-if.
In our manufacturing and marketing of these machines, we encourage children to develop an emotional tie that is sure to lead to an empathetic dead end. On top of this, it has become fashionable for psychologists to critique empathy, a unique form of human connection, just at a time when we are starting relationships with objects with none to give. The coincidence is too convenient: children will lose the ability to have empathy if they relate too consistently with objects that cannot form empathetic ties.
Technology challenges us to look at our human values. We can try to use technology to cure Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s, which would be a blessing, but that blessing is not a reason to move from artificial brain enhancement to artificial intimacy (亲密).
And yet that is the kind of talk that one hears these days. The narrative begins with the idea that compassionate robots would be “better than nothing”, better because there aren’t enough people to teach, love, and tend to people. But that idea quickly shifts into another: robots would be better than almost anything. Unlike people, they would not abandon you or get sick and die. They might not be capable of love, but they won’t break your heart.
From better than nothing to better than anything. These are stations on our voyage to forgetting what it means to be human. But the forgetting begins long before we have a robot companion in place; it begins when we even think of putting one in place. To build the robots, we must first rebuild ourselves as people ready to be their companions.
Being human today is about the struggle to remain genuinely empathetic. Ourselves-to remember why it matters, to remember what we cherish. These says, to be human is to keep one’s mind on the glory that one is.
8. The author mentions the 16-year-old girl mainly to .
A. draw a comparison B. provide an example
C. evaluate a comment D. introduce a topic
9. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. Technology unexpectedly advances empathy studies.
B. Psychologists accidentally ignore the needs of children.
C. The criticism of empathy is scientifically valid but poorly timed.
D. The tech industries may benefit from the timing of psychological cycles?
10. Which of the following statements might the author agree with?
A. Technological progress clarifies human values through challenges.
B. Artificial intimacy reflects technological progress yet threatens empathy.
C. Technology’s medical benefits justify its application in emotional domains.
D Future technologies like AI companions require stricter moral regulations.
11. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Empathy at Risk: Psychology’s New Frontier
B. Why Humans Prefer Robots: An Analysis of Social Failure
C. Faking Intimacy: When Machines Decrease Our Humanity
D The Rise of Robot Companions: A Technological Revolution
D
Every time we make a new video or send an email, or post a photo of our latest meal, it’s like turning on a small light bulb (灯泡) that’ ll never be turned off. This points to an uncomfortable and extremely modern question: To help save the planet, should we be using less data? Given how much of modern life depends on digital data, the answer could be a key aspect to living nobly in the AI age.
Why do posts produce carbon at all? When you send a post on Moments, it goes along a chain of energy-burning electronics. Your Wi-Fi router sends the signal along wires to the local exchange — the box on the street corner — and from there to a telecoms company, and from there to huge data centers operated by the tech giants. Each of those runs on electricity, and it all adds up.
Today, about 400 million homes worldwide have at least one “smart” device— curtains, electric cookers, refrigerators, and pads. By 2028, that figure is expected to nearly double. We are, in other words, being taken into a world where it’s harder to do anything without turning on a digital light bulb. This puts eco-conscious consumers in a bind. After all, who would like to be someone that can’t get their information properly because they’re too busy keeping the carbon footprint of their searches down?
In the absence of systemic change, worrying over our individual data-usage decisions is “like trying to hold back a flood with a bucket and spade (铁铲).” Still, there’s something we can do. When we face a digital decision, the less data-thirsty option will often be the smarter one. Blocking third-party tracking when we’ re on the web, for example, not only reduces the power consumption of internet browsing; it’s also good for your privacy. More fundamentally, maybe we don’t need to turn everything into data. If I put down my phone the next time I’m on a train, it won’t save the planet. But I’ll be looking out the window with my own eyes, creating a memory that releases no carbon at all.
12. What does the author imply about data usage?
A. It is energy-consuming.
B. It is easy and convenient.
C. Its negative effects are ignored.
D. Its benefits are underestimated.
13. What is the function of paragraph 2?
A. To entertain. B. To inform.
C. To persuade. D. To inspire.
14. What do the underlined words “in a bind” mean in paragraph 3?
A. At risk. B. At a loss.
C. At ease. D. At a disadvantage.
15. What does the author emphasize concerning carbon reduction in the last paragraph?
A. The removal of digital data.
B. The promotion of ecotourism.
C. The value of personal contribution.
D. The significance of systemic change.

根据第三段“In our manufacturing and marketing of these machines, we encourage children to develop an emotional tie that is sure to lead to an empathetic dead end. On top of this, it has become fashionable for psychologists to critique empathy, a unique form of human connection, just at a time when we are starting relationships with objects with none to give. The coincidence is too convenient: children will lose the ability to have empathy if they relate too consistently with objects that cannot form empathetic ties.( 在我们制造和销售这些机器的过程中,我们鼓励孩子们建立一种情感联系,这种联系肯定会导致同理心的死胡同。
根据第四段“Technology challenges us to look at our human values. We can try to use technology to cure Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s, which would be a blessing, but that blessing is not a reason to move from artificial brain enhancement to artificial intimacy(亲密).( 科技促使我们审视人类的价值。我们可以尝试用技术来治疗帕金森氏症或阿尔茨海默氏症,这将是一种祝福,但这种祝福并不是从人工增强大脑转向人工亲密的理由)”以及第六段中“ From better than nothing to better than anything. These are stations on our voyage to forgetting what it means to be human. But the forgetting begins long before we have a robot companion in place; it begins when we even think of putting one in place( 从聊胜于无到无与伦比。
A 13. B 14. B 15. C
根据文章第一段“Every time we make a new video or send an email, or post a photo of our latest meal, it’s like turning on a small light bulb (灯泡) that’ll never be turned off. This points to an uncomfortable and extremely modern question: To help save the planet, should we be using less data? Given how much of modern life depends on digital data, the answer could be a key aspect to living nobly in the AI age.(每次我们制作一个新视频、发一封电子邮件、发布一张我们最近吃的饭的照片,就像打开了一个永远关不掉的小灯泡。这就引出了一个让人不舒服但又非常现代的问题:为了拯救地球,我们应该减少数据的使用吗?考虑到现代生活在很大程度上依赖于数字数据,这个问题的答案可能是在人工智能时代高尚生活的一个关键方面。)”和第二段的“When you send a post on Moments, it goes along a chain of energy-burning electronics. Your Wi-Fi router sends the signal along wires to the local exchange — the box on the street corner — and from there to a telecoms company, and from there to huge data centers operated by the tech giants. Each of those runs on electricity, and it all adds up.(当你在朋友圈发一条帖子时,它会通过一系列耗能的电子设备。你的Wi-Fi路由器通过电线将信号发送到本地交换机——街角的盒子——然后从那里发送到电信公司,再从那里发送到由科技巨头运营的大型数据中心。每一个都是用电运行的,这些都加起来了。)”可知,作者指出每一次发送信总、发布照片等行为都会产生碳排放,因为这些行为都依赖于一系列耗电的电了设备。故选A。
根据第二段内容“Why do posts produce carbon at all? When you send a post on Moments, it goes along a chain of energy-burning electronics. Your Wi-Fi router sends the signal along wires to the local exchange — the box on the street corner — and from there to a telecoms company, and from there to huge data centers operated by the tech giants. Each of those runs on electricity, and it all adds up.( 为什么帖子会产生碳呢?
根据下文“After all, who would like to be someone that can’t get their information properly because they’re too busy keeping the carbon footprint of their searches down?(毕竟,谁愿意成为一个因为忙于降低搜索的碳足迹而无法正确获取信息的人呢?)”和作者提到“This puts eco-conscious consumers in a bind.(这让有环保意识的消费者陷入了困境。)”
最后一段“Still, there’s something we can do. But I’ll be looking out the window with my own eyes, creating a memory that releases no carbon at all.(不过,我们还是有办法的。

How to Work with Different Cultures
Working effectively with different cultures is a necessary skill for anyone in a culturally diverse work environment. Cultural variations in the workplace may range from simple regional differences, such as varying dialects (方言), to different viewpoints on timeliness, efficiency, and communication. ____16____
Be aware of your words and actions. What seems proper to you may not be a cultural standard to another person. ____17____ Is what you’re about to say possibly rude? If so, figure out a way to express it differently. Before you give someone at work a high five or a pat on the back, take a moment to consider your actions. Based on what you know about that culture, is touching in the workplace proper?
Practise patience. It may take a while for you to get used to working with people from different cultures. Don’t worry, that’s normal. Try not to get angry if communication takes a little extra effort at first. For example, maybe you are now working with someone whose first language is not your mother tongue. In this case, they might not understand your point. ____18____ Try saying, “OK, I can see I’m not making myself clear. How can I help us get on the same page?”
Look at issues from a different angle (角度). Don’t assume that you are all looking at the issue from the same angle. It’s possible that you might think you’re working with the same goals in mind, but others may have different ideas about how to achieve them. ____19____ Looking at an issue from another point of view can help you find solutions that you might not have considered.
____20____ But if you put yourself in the right frame of mind, you will likely find it a rewarding experience despite some challenges.
A. An important way is trying to be humorous.
B. A good rule is to consider your words before you speak.
C. Learning to communicate better helps you work with people.
D. There are suggestions for you to work with different cultures.
