At 2 years old, Caitlin Lyons found love at first sight — not with a storybook prince or a celebrity, but with horseback riding. “Once I got on my first horse, I just knew,” says Lyons. “And it didn’t take long for everyone around me to see how serious I was.” She had a riding instructor when she was in elementary school and since then, she has been on horseback more often than on a playground.
As a high school student, Lyons visited the University of Georgia (UGA) after hearing about the school’s competitive equestrian (马术的) team. When she stepped on campus, she once again felt an instant connection. “It was home,” says Lyons. “There’s no other way to describe it. I just knew this was where I was meant to be.”
Attending UGA allowed Lyons to find her path as an outstanding athlete. In 2024, she was named a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. She also won the 2022 SEC Reining Rider of the Year and 2024 SEC Equestrian Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Lyons rides different horses depending on the event and location, but her personal horse, 6-year-old Ava Grace, holds a special place in her heart. “Horseback riding isn’t about jumping on an animal’s back and telling it what to do,” she says. “It’s about connecting. You can’t be in your head or anxious. You have to work together with a thousand pounds of living, breathing animal underneath you and know if they’re nervous or confident or confused.”
While Lyons has a lot of experience working with horses, her passion for animals extends well beyond the riding stables (养马场). She has always wanted to help with the conservation of endangered species. She plans to work as a wildlife technician and eventually transform wildlife conservation at a national level after graduation. Just as she’s learned to build trust and care for horses, Lyons will use that devotion for protecting endangered species and their natural environments.
4. What excited Lyons’s love for horseback riding?
A. A storybook about horses.
B. Her first experience on a horse.
C. A wonderful equestrian performance.
D. Her riding instructor’s encouragement.
5. Why did Lyons like UGA on her visit?
A. It provided adequate training facilities.
B. It offered superior academic programs.
C. It gave her a sense of belonging.
D. It lifted her competitive spirit.
6. What does Lyons emphasize about horseback riding?
A. Matching fine horses to events.
B. Overcoming personal anxiety.
C. Building a bond with the horse.
D. Mastering practical riding skills.
7. What is Lyons’s future goal?
A. To become a professional equestrian athlete.
B. To support national wildlife conservation.
C. To establish her own riding stables.
D. To advocate for racehorses’ welfare.
B 5. C 6. C 7. B

I just knew this was where I was meant to be.”(高中时期,莱昂斯听闻佐治亚大学(UGA)有一支实力强劲的马术队后,便前往参观。
根据第四段中““Horseback riding isn’t about jumping on an animal’s back and telling it what to do,” she says. “It’s about connecting. You can’t be in your head or anxious. You have to work together with a thousand pounds of living, breathing animal underneath you and know if they’re nervous or confident or confused.”(“骑马可不是跳到马背上,然后命令它该怎么做,”她说,“骑马讲究的是心灵相通。你不能满脑子杂念,也不能焦虑不安。你得与身下这头重达千磅、活生生会呼吸的动物协同合作,还得感知到它们是紧张、自信还是困惑。”)”可知,莱昂斯强调骑马是与马建立联系。故选C。

C
Traditionally, profiting from forests often meant capitalizing on timber (木材) —choosing commercial timber. Yet increasingly, there is an understanding that it’s of greater significance to keep trees standing than cut them down for financial profit. Money is not everything. We have to recognize real and lasting value is from natural resources. But money is a fact of life.
Good news is that we can expect entire natural woodland is left undamaged and still provides a revenue (收益) stream. Leaving woodland complete does not necessarily mean that we do not touch it at all. Conservation work may involve building back biodiversity or the removal of foreign plant species.
A healthy woodland system can provide a range of yields (产物). Besides eatable yields—top fruit, berries, and food crops, it produces substances for chemical use. The non-timber forest products provided by natural ecosystems vary significantly depending on where they are. But there are always more ways to explore to acquire revenue.
A project in the UK, for example, shows woodland itself is also a draw for visitors. It engages a community who creates a sustainable area of woodland. The community largely obtains revenue by opening up parts of the natural woodland to the public with an adventure playground and outdoor recreational activities on the site. It also offers courses on nest building, special wildlife events and more. The project is thought to have great uniqueness. It centers round the existing natural land; the yields that woodland provides become by products.
Recreational activities, tours, and classes are just the commencement. A rich and bio-diverse woodland can be an ecosystem that draws in more people looking for a beautiful place to stay. Woodland has great value in ecological and social terms. And when you nurse it, it could also add to the income from your land.
8 What do people increasingly think about forest conservation?
A. It means making full use of timber. B. It outweighs financial benefit.
C. It is extremely difficult to carry out. D. It is all about rebuilding biodiversity.
9. Why is the project considered unique?
A. It provides lots of recreational activities. B. It highlights educational experiences.
C. It makes woodland itself the main product. D. It focuses on nursing the natural land.
10. What does the underlined word “commencement” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Intention. B. Beginning. C. Wish. D. Exception.
11 Which is the text mainly about?
A. Forest conservation has been a top priority.
B. A project helps create sustainable woodland.
C. Non-timber products help gain more benefit.
D. Woodland brings profit while staying complete.
B 9. C 10. B 11. D
根据第一段“Yet increasingly, there is an understanding that it’s of greater significance to keep trees standing than cut them down for financial profit.(然而慢慢地,人们越来越能理解保持树木生长比为了经济利润而砍掉它们更重要。)”
根据第四段“A project in the UK, for example, shows woodland itself is also a draw for visitors.(以一个在英国的项目为例,该项目证明了林地本身对于游客来说也十分有吸引力。)”以及“The project is thought to have great uniqueness. It centers round the existing natural land; the yields that woodland provides become by products.(这个项目被认为具有很大的独特性。它以现有的自然土地为中心;林地所提供的产量成为了产品。)”可知,该项目的独特之处在于它利用了林地自身的优势,呈现给游客林地的自然风貌,使得林地本身就是主要的产品,吸引更多的游客前往。故选C项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段“Recreational activities, tours, and classes are just the commencement.(娱乐活动、旅游和课程只是一个开始。)”以及“A rich and bio-diverse woodland can be an ecosystem that draws in more people looking for a beautiful place to stay.(一个丰富并且多样的林地可以成为一个生态系统,这样就可以吸引更多的人来寻找一个美丽的地方停留。)”
根据第二段“Good news is that we can expect entire natural woodland is left undamaged and still provides a revenue (收益) stream.(好消息是我们可以预计这样一个完好并且没有被损害的自然林地仍能提供收入来源。)”以及“A healthy woodland system can provide a range of yields (产物).(一个健康的林地系统可以提供一系列的产物。)”
D
Researchers from the University of Florida studied what may cause people to choose unknown options over known ones, and they found that where the information comes from is important: when what you know comes from other people’s experiences, you’re more likely to explore new options.
They conducted a series of experiments. In one experiment, participants were asked to choose one of four cards on a computer screen. Each card hid an amount of money from 1 cent to 40 cents, and participants were told how much money was behind one of the cards in order to help them determine whether to explore and try another card in the hope of turning up more. Some participants were told the information came from another person taking part in the experiment; others were told it came from the computer.
Participants were almost twice as likely to explore an unknown card when the information about the known amount appeared to come from a player rather than the computer. As social beings, we consider other people’s experiences as part of our own, so we’re less likely to want to repeat them, even if the experiences are positive, the researchers find. It doesn’t seem to work the same way with computers.
Not surprisingly, the amount revealed also had an effect: participants were more willing to choose a different card — to explore, so to speak — when the known amount was low and less willing when it was high, no matter the source of the information. But when the revealed amount was in the middle, the human versus (对抗) computer effect became particularly evident.
The idea that the individual decision about whether to venture out has a social component could have practical implications, the researchers write. “For those seeking to encourage exploration in others, our findings offer a simple intervention: highlight the fact that existing information is available because of previous explorers.”
12. What mainly influenced the participants’ decisions in the experiment?
A. The source of the information. B. The time reserved for each task.
C. The number of options provided. D. The reward for the correct choice.
13. At which known amount might the participants hesitate most?
A. 5 cents. B. 10 cents. C. 20 cents. D. 35 cents.
14. What is the function of the last paragraph?
A. To doubt an idea. B. To give a warning.
C. To note the study’s limitations. D. To suggest a practical application.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why we prefer familiar over foreign B. How rewards make us avoid unknowns
C. Why we go where no one’s gone before D. How others help us make better choices
A 13. C 14. D 15. C

根据第一段“Researchers from the University of Florida studied what may cause people to choose unknown options over known ones, and they found that where the information comes from is important: when what you know comes from other people’s experiences, you’re more likely to explore new options.(佛罗里达大学的研究人员对人们为何会倾向于选择未知选项而非已知选项这一现象进行了研究,并得出结论:信息的来源至关重要:当你所掌握的信息来自他人的经验时,你就更有可能去探索新的选择)”可知,在该实验中,主要影响参与者决策的因素是信息的来源。故选A。
根据第四段“Not surprisingly, the amount revealed also had an effect: participants were more willing to choose a different card — to explore, so to speak — when the known amount was low and less willing when it was high, no matter the source of the information. But when the revealed amount was in the middle, the human versus
根据最后一段“The idea that the individual decision about whether to venture out has a social component could have practical implications, the researchers write. “For those seeking to encourage exploration in others, our findings offer a simple intervention: highlight the fact that existing information is available because of previous explorers.”(研究人员写道,关于个人是否要冒险这一决策本身其实也包含着社会层面的因素,这一观点可能会产生实际影响。“对于那些想要鼓励他人去探索的人来说,我们的研究结果提供了一种简单的干预措施:强调这样一个事实,即现有的信息之所以能够获取,是因为有之前的探索者做出过努力。”)”可知,最后一段的作用是为实际应用提供建议。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Researchers from the University of Florida studied what may cause people to choose unknown options over known ones, and they found that where the information comes from is important: when what you know comes from other people’s experiences, you’re more likely to explore new options.(佛罗里达大学的研究人员对人们为何会倾向于选择未知选项而非已知选项这一现象进行了研究,并得出结论:信息的来源至关重要:当你所掌握的信息来自他人的经验时,你就更有可能去探索新的选择)”结合文章主要说明了佛罗里达大学研究者探究人们选未知选项的原因,实验发现信息来源(他人经验更促探索)和已知金额有影响,还指出研究对鼓励他人探索有实际意义。

People think we are all just Peter Pans refusing to be “adults”.(我们在逃避责任、挑战,最终逃避成熟本身。
E选项“I’m running away from people’s fixed idea of the “real” world.(我在逃避人们对“真实”世界的固有观念)”承接上文,明确说明自己是在逃避“真实”世界的固有观念,同时引出下文“I’m running away from office life, commutes (通勤), weekend duties, and the strict path society has laid out as “normal”.(我正在逃离办公室生活、通勤压力、周末加班,以及社会设定好的所谓“正常”人生轨迹)”对固有观念的具体说明,上下文语意连贯。故选E项。

Champa loves singing more than anything else in the whole wide world. She sings in the bathroom. And on the roof. She sings to the hills. And to the moon. She sings through rain. And through heat. When Champa sings, she is filled with the most marvellous feeling in the world.
One day, when Champa sings, Basant’s eyes light up. “I have an amazing idea!” he says. Basant is Champa’s best friend and he is always bursting with ideas. “You should sing on Annual Day!” says Basant. “What a terrible idea!” says Champa. “Why not! You love to sing.”
Champa hasn’t told Basant about the only time she got on stage and nearly fainted with fear. “I...I can’t sing in front of so many people. I don’t even sing in front of Ma and Pa!” “You do sing around me! All you need is a little practice, Champa.” “Should I?” “Yes! Yes! Yes!” “What if people laugh at me?” “If they do, it just makes them silly and mean. You’re an amazing singer.” The very thought of singing in front of a crowd fills her stomach with butterflies. Champa is excited and terrified at the same time. But she loves singing so much! She decides to give it a try. Champa practises long and hard. She rolls out of bed with a soft hum. She sings while multiplying and dividing. She makes her voice go up and down and down and up while taking a bath.
Everyone at home is excited about Champa’s big day. They give her advice. “Take long and deep breaths before you sing.” “Give the audience your widest smile. Just be yourself.” “Drinking enough water and avoiding spicy and acidic food are essential for protecting your throat.”
The day before her performance, Champa holds a special rehearsal (排练). It is a roaring success! Finally, it’s Annual Day. Champa is wearing the sweater that her grandfather knit specially for the show.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When it was her turn to sing, she seemed to get tongue-tied. The bright stage lights blinded her for a moment, and the sea of faces in the audience kept her heart pounding. Her palms grew sweaty, and the lyrics she had practiced so hard suddenly slipped her mind. An awkward silence filled the hall as she stood frozen, her throat tight with fear. Whispers rippling through the crowd, Champa felt her cheeks burning with embarrassment. She clenched her fists, willing herself to remember the melody — but only her heartbeat answered. She was at a loss what to do next.
That was when she saw Basant, waving wildly at her. His encouraging smile and exaggerated thumbs-up were like a lifeline. Taking a deep breath, Champa closed her eyes and imagined singing alone on the roof. Slowly, the familiar tune returned to her. She started softly, then her voice grew louder, clearer and stronger, filling the auditorium. The audience fell silent, then burst into applause when she finished the last tune. Basant jumped to his feet, cheering the loudest. At that moment, Champa realized that singing wasn’t about perfection — it was about sharing the love for music.

A Matching fine horses to events.

Not surprisingly the amount revealed also had an effect: participants were more willing to choose a different card — to explore, so to speak — when the known amount was low and less willing when it was high, no matter the source of the information.
13 At which known amount might the participants hesitate most?
A. 5 cents. B. 10 cents. C. 20 cents. D. 35 cents.
