We first have to understand what leaves are and what they do. Leaves are the world’s food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots and take carbon dioxide and oxygen from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose (葡萄糖), a kind of sugar. Plants use it as food for energy. A chemical called “chlorophyll” in the leaves gives plants their green colour. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter, and trees “know” they need to get ready for the winter. During the winter, there is not enough sunlight or water. Trees rest during this time and live on the food they store during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. As the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves, we begin to see yellow and orange leaves. The bright reds and purples (紫色) we see in leaves are made mostly in autumn. In some trees, like maples (枫树), sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn the glucose in the leaves into a red color. And we can enjoy the beautiful red leaves during the autumn. 39. Which word should be in the following box? A. Water. B. Air. C. Wind. D. Sugar. 40. What does the underlined word “chlorophyll” probably mean in Chinese? A. 蛋白质 B. 淀粉 C. 脂肪 D. 叶绿素 41. Why do the leaves turn yellow? A Because they are short of sunlight and water. B. Because they are short of water and CO2. C. Because they are short of sunlight and CO2. D. Because they are short of glucose and energy. 42. What’s the passage mainly about? A. The importance of trees. B. The importance of leaves. C. Why leaves change color. D. Why tree leaves are green. 【答案】39. A 40. D 41. A 42. C 【解析】 【导语】本文解释了树叶变色的原因及过程。 【39题详解】 细节理解题。文章第二段提到“Plants use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose (葡萄糖), a kind of sugar.”,所以光合作用的原料是水(Water)和二氧化碳(CO₂),在阳光下生成葡萄糖(Glucose)。故选A。 【40题详解】 词句猜测题。文中提到“A chemical called ‘chlorophyll’ in the leaves gives plants their green color.”,即这种化学物质让植物呈现绿色,结合常识,叶绿素是让植物变绿的物质。故选D。 【41题详解】 细节理解题。第四段开头说“During the winter, there is not enough sunlight or water.”,树停止制造食物,叶绿素消失,叶子变黄。所以原因是缺少阳光和水。故选A。 【42题详解】 主旨大意题。文章第一段直接提问“Do you want to know how and why a fallen leaf changes colour?”,后面的内容都是在解释叶子变色的原因,所以主旨是叶子为什么会变色。故选C。 C People who are about the same age as you are your peers (同辈). Peers include your friends and your classmates. They have a strong influence on your actions. Your peers influence how you think, how you act, and even how you dress. Your peers also influence your self-confidence (自信心). Peer pressure is the influence that people of the same age have on each other. Sometimes your peers influence you in a helpful and positive way. A friend may tell you some helpful ways of learning. He might invite you to join a study group. He might show you how to solve a particular kind of problem during the lunch. Such actions are helpful. But sometimes your peers influence you in a negative (负面的) and unhealthy way. A friend might offer you a cigarette (香烟). Cigarettes are harmful to your health. This bad influence is negative peer pressure. Your peers may not always realise they are influencing you in a negative way. For example, a friend invites you to the movies. You would love to go, but you have chores to complete. In situations like this, you must make a proper decision. People with low self-confidence are easily affected by peer pressure. That’s because they don’t think highly of themselves. As a result, they have a need for conformity (一致). They want to think or act as others do. They believe that their peers will like them more if they go along with the crowd. 43. What can we learn about peers from Paragraph 1? A. They include your sisters and your brothers. B. They have little influence on your actions. C. They can influence your self-confidence. D. They can’t influence how you think. 44. The tool is an AI chat robot system that OpenAI, a company, invented in 2022 to show and test what a very large, powerful AI system can achieve. ChatGPT remembers the key information of your dialogue, using earlier questions and answers to form its next reply quickly. It gets its answers from plenty of information on the Internet. You can ask ChatGPT anything, like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and getting programming (编程) help. Perhaps it’s not smart enough to replace all humans yet, but it can be creative, and its answers can sound pretty excellent. A few days after its use, more than one million people were trying out ChatGPT. The analyst Lloyd Walmsley said that ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly users in February 2023, and did so in just two months, while TikTok spent about nine months and Instagram needed two and a half years. ChatGPT is free to use at the moment because it is still in its research period. But when too many people use the server (服务器), it can’t process your request. It just means you should try visiting the website at a later time when fewer people are trying to use it. Because of it, OpenAI has a new plan, ChatGPT Plus, which allows users to have better experiences even during the busiest time. This service does come at a cost of $19.99/month. Again and again he kept throwing things into the ocean. As I walked even closer, I noticed that the man was picking up starfish (海星) that had been washed up onto the beach and, one at a time, he was throwing them back into the sea. I was puzzled. You see, it’s low tide (潮汐) right now and all of these starfish have been washed up onto the beach. If I don’t throw them back into the sea, they’ll die up here from lack of oxygen (缺氧).” “I understand” I replied, “but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach. You can’t possibly get to all of them. There are simply too many. And don’t you realise this is probably happening on hundreds of beaches? A. Because they are short of sunlight and water. C People who are about the same age as you are your peers (同辈). C They can influence your self-confidence. D. They can’t influence how you think. 44. Which of the following actions from your friends can lead to the negative peer pressure? A. Inviting you to join a study group. B. Offering you a cigarette. C. Showing you how to solve a particular kind of problem. D. Telling you some useful ways of learning. 45. How does the writer develop the third paragraph? A. By telling stories. B. By giving examples. C. By asking questions. D. By giving some advice. 46. Why are the people with low-confidence easily affected by the peer pressure? A. Because they want to learn more from others. B. Because they don’t have the skills they need. C. Because they don’t think highly of themselves. D. Because they want to get along well with others. D There’s an AI robot: ChatGPT, and you’d better pay attention to it, even if you aren’t into artificial intelligence (人工智能). You can ask ChatGPT anything like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and getting programming (编程) help. However, ________ ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence robot that provides ways to solve your questions, but Google is a search engine in which you can search for as much information as possible, ChatGPT has limited knowledge because of its programming, but Google has unlimited knowledge which is updated (更新) every day. 47. Have you ever complained about not having good friends in your life? In order to get along with others, the first thing you need to do is to make friends with yourself. Listen to your inner voice. Remember that inner voice keeps whispering to you about what you really want and need as well as what you do not really want and need. It is time you start listening to it. In order to get to know yourself well, it is important to learn and accept what you want and what you do not want. Learn to enjoy your own company. You will be surprised to find out how many things you can do by yourself and actually have fun in the process. Reading romantic novels, poetry or science fiction is only one of the things that you can do by yourself, which not only can offer you hours of enjoyment, but also the chance to get to know yourself better. Satisfy yourself. Pay special attention to your personal hygiene (个人卫生). Do your hair and nails often and try new styles. Follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly to stay in good shape. No matter how busy you are, always find at least an hour per day for yourself to relax either by doing absolutely nothing or doing something that you enjoy. Learn to respect your own boundaries (界限). Find out what your boundaries are and learn to respect them. You are the only one who knows what you can and what you cannot accept. As I walked along, I saw a local man in the distance. As I walked nearer, I noticed that the man kept leaning (弯腰) down, picking something up and throwing it into the sea. Again and again he kept throwing things into the ocean. As I walked even closer, I noticed that the man was picking up starfish (海星) that had been washed up onto the beach and, one at a time, he was throwing them back into the sea. I was puzzled. I said to the man, “Good evening, friend. I was wondering what you are doing.” “I’m throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see, it’s low tide (潮汐) right now and all of these starfish have been washed up onto the beach. If I don’t throw them back into the sea, they’ll die up here from lack of oxygen (缺氧).” “I understand,” I replied, “but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach. You can’t possibly get to all of them. There are simply too many. And don’t you realise this is probably happening on hundreds of beaches? Can’t you see that you can’t possibly make a big difference?” The man smiled, bent (弯腰) down and picked up another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea, he replied, “Make a difference to that one!” 53.
