I think they have a bad influence (影响) on her, and she only spends time with them because they are “cool”. Could you tell me if I should bring the matter up to her, or if it would be better for me to keep quiet? I don’t want to lose her as a friend. —Linda “I won’t help you cheat.” My closest friend, Kim, has lost interest in school and studying. He says he’s bored with all the things, so he often asks me whether I’ll let him copy my homework. By now I’ve said no, but he keeps asking. I told him, “I think we’ll get into trouble.” But he just laughed and told me not to worry. I don’t want to put my grades at risk, but I’m afraid to face my friend about this, so I just keep avoiding (回避) the topic. How can I get him to stop asking? I am wondering if you could give me some suggestions for dealing with my problem. —Mike “No, I CAN’T do that for you!” Anna is my best friend. We get along with each other well, but she is asking me to do things for her all the time. “Could you help me pick out some new clothes? Would you mind if I borrow your bike? Can you look after my apartment while I’m away?” And these are just a few examples. I’ve said yes so many times that now I’m afraid I’ll hurt her feelings if I say no. Any ideas? —Amy 1.What does the underlined part “I should bring the matter up to her” mean? A.I should stay away from her. B.I should make friends with them. The institute compared costs using different countries’ GDP per person. GDP per person is the total value (价值) of all the work done and goods produced in a country in one year, divided by the number of people who live there. And the report said the average cost of raising a child in South Korea to the age of 18 is 7.8 times the country’s GDP per person. In China, the average cost of raising a child is about $75,000, which is more than 6.3 times the GDP per person. It’s even more expensive to raise a child in Chinese cities, with an average cost of almost $94,000.    South Korea and China both have very low birth rates (比率). South Korea’s is the lowest in the world — and with those costs, it might be easy to see why. Japan also has a low birth rate, but it costs about 4.3 times the GDP per person to raise a child there. It’s 4.1 times in the USA, and 2.1 times in Australia. But it’s not only money that parents have to spend—it’s time too. And this is another reason young people are choosing not to have children, according to the institute. For example, the report showed that in China, between 2010 and 2018, the amount of time parents spent helping their children with their homework increased from less than four hours to almost six hours per week. 1.What’s the average cost of raising a child to the age of 18 in China? A.About $47,250. B.About $75,000. C.About $94,000. 2.Which country has the lowest birth rate in the world? A.Japan. B.China. C.South Korea. 3.What would the writer go on talking about next? A.Parents have less time to make money. B.The time parents spent with children increased. C.Children nowadays have too much pressure in China and South Korea. 4.What’s the best title for this text? A.Raising a Child Costs the Most B.The Economy (经济) in China and South Korea C.Young People are Choosing Not to Have Children 【答案】1.B 2.C 3.B 4.A 【导语】本文主要讲述了中国及韩国的出生率低的相关原因,并比较了不同国家抚养孩子的成本高低。 1. 细节理解题。根据“In China, the average cost of raising a child is about $75,000,”可知,在中国,抚养一个孩子的平均成本约为7.5万美元,故选B。 2. 细节理解题。根据“South Korea’s is the lowest in the world”可知,韩国的出生率是世界上最低的,故选C。 3.推理判断题。根据“For example, the report showed that in China, between 2010 and 2018, the amount of time parents spent helping their children with their homework increased from less than four hours to almost six hours per week.”可知,文章接下来应该是介绍父母花费更多的时间帮助他们的孩子,故选B。 4.最佳标题题。根据“The cost of raising a child is the highest in South Korea and China,”以及整个文章的理解可知,本文主要是介绍出生率低背后的原因,主要是抚养孩子的成本太高,故选A。 C Getting in touch with friends is difficult after people change schools or move house. They don’t know how to start the conversation again if they don’t talk with their friends for a long time. Many people want to get in touch with old friends, but they are afraid to do so. Psychologists (心理学家) from colleges did a study about how people feel about getting in touch with old friends. The study shows over 90% of the people don’t call their old friends. 70% of them don’t want to call their friends first, because they worry that their old friends won’t want to hear from them and maybe their old friends are too busy to talk with them. Some people even think getting in touch with their old friends is as hard as talking to strange people. It plays an important role in our life. People used gasoline (汽油) cars for many years before electric (电的) cars. With more and more electric cars coming out, it offers a good choice to lower the pressure of energy. Car companies are now making cars that are fully powered by electricity. Are electric cars as good as gasoline cars? Electric and gasoline cars look the same on the outside but they still have very different parts inside. Electric cars have one main moving part: the motor. But gas cars have hundreds of parts, often needing frequent maintenance (保养). Having fewer parts makes the electric car cheaper to keep and seem to have fewer mechanical (机械的) problems.. Electric cars are energy-saving, also making them cheaper to run. It costs about $1.00 to travel 43 miles in an electric car, which costs about $1.25 to go 18 miles in a gas car. Actually, an electric car can go twice or more as far as a gas car for the same price. Electric cars have less pollution, making them more friendly to the environment. An electric car has to stop more often to get charged (充电). So, you would choose a gas car if you have to drive far. There are plenty of gas stations, but not many charging stations for electric cars. And as soon as an electric car reaches a charging station, it may take long time to charge. There are certainly advantages to both electric cars and gasoline cars. It’s good to know which is more important to you. With the development of electric cars, people wonder if electric cars can work 1 the traditional gasoline cars. ↑ Facts ↑ The idea of comparing electric cars with gasoline cars. 2 ↓ Differences ↓ ●Electric cars and gasoline cars have 3 on the outside. ●They both have motors. Electric ears ●Having fewer parts lowers the cost of their maintenance and the frequency of having mechanical problems. ●They are more energy-saving, making them cheaper to run. Let’s enjoy two friendship poems from Chinese and Western writers. To Wang Lun By Li BaiI, Li Bai, sit in a boat about to go, When suddenly on shore your farewell songs overflow. However deep the Lake of Peach Blossoms may be, It is not so deep, Wang Lun! As your love for me. A Time to Talk By Robert Frost When a friend calls to me from the road And slows his horse to a meaning walk, I don’t stand still and look around On all the hills I haven’t hoed, And shout from where I am, what is it? No, not as there is a time to talk. I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground, Blade-end up and five feet tall, And plod: I go up to the stone wall For a friendly visit. Both poems are famous in their cultures, but they tell different stories. Li Bai described the scene of his friend seeing him off. US poet Robert Frost wrote about a friend’s visit when he was working. Li made a comparison His poem shows the friendship between him and his friend is deeper than the deep water. Frost’s poem, on the other hand, tells the readers that we should stop what we are doing to talk with our friends. It tells us that nothing stops spending time with friends. The language is simple but sincere. 1.Why do we say “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”? 2.What story does Li Bai tell us in To Wang Lun? 3.What do you think of the friendship between Li Bai and Wang Lun? 4.What does Robert Fret want to tell us in his poem? 5.Do you think friends are necessary all the time in our life? Why? 【答案】 1.Because friends help us get through hard times. 2.Li Bai described the scene of his friend Wang Lun seeing him off. 3.The friendship between Li Bai and Wang Lun is very deep. 4.Robert Frost wants to tell us that we should stop what we are doing to talk with our friends. 5.Yes, friends are necessary all the time in our life. B The cost of raising a child is the highest in South Korea and China, according to a new report by Beijing’s YuWa Population Research Institute. A.Raising a Child Costs the Most B.The Economy (经济) in China and South Korea C.Young People are Choosing Not to Have Children C Getting in touch with friends is difficult after people change schools or move house. Lara Aknin, one of the psychologists, said, “Most people are worried that they have different lifestyles and interests now. But these differences can be helpful for people to get close to each other. After sharing something new and interesting, they won’t feel embarrassed (尴尬的) at all. Instead, they know each other better.” In fact, if you get in touch with an old friend, you will be surprised to find that he or she is also looking forward to hearing from you. A.It’s hard to get in touch with old friends. B.We can’t share our things with old friends. C.Differences may help people get close to old friends. D.Most people might have different lifestyles and interests. 4.What does the writer want to tell us? A.It’s important to have some good friends. B.Be brave to get in touch with your old friends. Gasoline cars ●Gas cars can cover a longer distance. ●Gas cars are 4 to get gasoline than electric cars to get charged. Conclusion Both electric cars and gasoline cars have their advantages. People should 5 according to their needs. B Friends are important to us. Friends help us get through hard times. So we all agree with the saying “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” Friends also make a difference to us a lot. “A true friend reaches for your hand and touche year heart.” This Chinese idea has the same idea as the English saying.
