八、阅读理解
(A)
Parents often believe that they have good relationship with their children. But last summer Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son. Suddenly he seemed to talk far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always shut,” Joanna noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. “She used to cuddle up (蜷缩着) against me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark. “Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is understanding which time is which.”
Before the age of 11, children like to tell their parents what's on their mind. “In fact parents are the first on the list,” said Michael Riera. “This completely changes during the teen years,” Riera explained. “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”
To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental (心理的) break. For children, they also need freedom, though they are young. Students these days often have a lot of worries. Sometimes they have problems with their schoolwork, and sometimes with their friends. Some people think the worst thing is to do nothing. Laura Mills, a teenager from Washington, agrees. “Problems and worries are normal in life,” says Laura. “But I think talking to someone helps a lot. If we don’t talk to someone, we’ll certainly feel worse.”
Laura once lost her purse, and worried for days. She was afraid to tell her parents about it. She even walked three miles to school each day because she didn’t have any money. She just kept thinking. “If I tell my parents, they’ll be angry!” But in the end, she talked to her parents and they were really understanding. Her dad said he sometimes made careless mistakes himself. They got her a new purse and asked her to be more careful. “I will always remember to share my problems in the future!” Laura says.
Robert Hunt advises students about common problems. He feels the same way as Laura. “It is best not to avoid our problems. We should always try to solve (解决) them.” He thinks that you can first find someone to talk to. This person doesn’t need to be an expert (专家) like himself. Students often forget that their parents have more experience than them, and are always there to help them.
In English, we say that sharing a problem is like cutting it in half. So you’re halfway to solving a problem if you talk to someone about it!

Everyone needs friends, and if you fail to make friends, you should examine yourself and see if there is something wrong with your personality. Maybe you have social faults which drive away your new acquaintances(相识的人). Whatever your social faults may be, look at them honestly, and make a real effort to correct them. By doing this, things can be better. Besides, to be friendly, you must feel friendly. Cheerfulness is the basis of friendliness. A cheerful person smiles. A smile is a magnet which draws people. Smile at someone and you are almost sure to get a smile in return.
When communicating with each other, a friendly person does his best to make a stranger feel at home, wherever he happens to be. Put yourself in the other person's place and make him feel welcome. And try to remember names. It makes your new acquaintances feel happy when you call them by their names. It gives them the feeling that they have made an impression on you and that must mean something to them because you remember them.
Sometimes, if you do not agree with other people on a certain matter, you should try to be as friendly as possible. Do not argue, but discuss. You always lose friends if you argue too much. If you want to be a friendly person, remember to think of others, and do not insist on (坚持) your own "rights". People who refuse to consider others have few friends.

八、阅读理解
(A)
Parents often believe that they have good relationship with their children.
Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with your children is a better way to know them.
