You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine the two singing opera (歌剧) in English rather than speaking poetic Chinese?
Jia and Lin are two characters from the Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions (《红楼 梦》), written by Cao Xueqin (1715—1763). Now the book has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, the US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan in 2017.
Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and playwrights (剧作家). Their understanding of both cultures helped them change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds of characters. But opera writer David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Hwang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a tragedy (悲剧) that everyone would understand.
The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters by using costumes (服装) and stage decorations. He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin showed up on stage, there was usually water around her on the stage.
The creators considered the work of introducing a Chinese classic to Western audience was worth doing. Hwang told China Daily he was happy to “have made a contribution (贡献) to the land where my parents were born”.
24.What do we know about A Dream of Red Mansions from Paragraph 4?
A.It is mainly about the rise and greatness of the Jia family.
B.It tells a love story between Jia and Lin with a happy ending.
C.The book is very long and there are many different characters.
D.The book has always been made into an English-language opera.
25.Why did Timmy Yip compare Lin to water?
A.Because of her dressing style. B.Because of her character.
C.Because of her appearance. D.Because of her life habits.
26.What can we infer from the text?
A.A Dream of Red Mansions is written by Cao Xueqin.
B.Hwang’s parents were born in United States of America.
C.The English-language opera was shown in four cities in China.
D.Timmy Yip knows a lot about Chinese and American cultures.
27.What do the creators of the opera think of their job?
A.Difficult and unbelievable. B.Stressful and difficult.
C.Satisfying and meaningful. D.Painful and challenging.

①We can see circles, squares and triangles everywhere in our daily life. Have you thought about their meanings in films? Much like colors, different shapes can show different features of characters in the scenes.
② Circles represent things that are soft and natural. The round shape reminds us of things that appear in nature, like the sun, raindrops and so on. We can also connect circles with beautiful eyes, babies’ round faces… All these things make us feel happy and warm. This is why so many cartoon characters’ bodies—heroes, good people—are round in shape, because circles represent goodness, happiness and friendliness.
③ Squares show things that are unnatural or man-made, or things that are boring or old-fashioned. In the cartoon film Up, Carl has a square face and wears square glasses, while Russell, an 8-year-old boy with a round face, always wears round medals. These shapes show the characters’ personalities. Carl is stubborn (固执的) and lonely, while Russell is lovely and full of energy.
④ The angriest shape is the triangle. Every kid who draws a monster with sharp teeth draws a row of triangles, don’t they? That’s because the shape represents fear, distrust and doubt in some way. Look at the bad guys in cartoons—they are all drawn with plenty of points and triangles, like Shengongbao in Ne Zha. And triangles are stable (稳固的) and don’t easily fall down. In films, this feature makes bad people difficult to deal with.
⑤ Not only in cartoons, but also in other kinds of films, different shapes are used for the same purpose. So, try to find the hidden shapes and you will know what the characters are like.
28.How does the writer explain the relationship between squares and characters’ personalities?
A.By telling a story. B.By listing numbers.
C.By raising a question. D.By giving an example.
29.Which picture does the underlined word “triangle” refer to?
A. B. C. D.
30.Which of the following is the structure of the article?(①=Para 1,②=Para 2……)
A.B. C. D.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.Why different shapes represent different things.
B.What makes kids fascinated by heroes in films.
C.What different shapes represent in different films.
D.How cartoons make different colors and shapes
【答案】28.D 29.A 30.A 31.C
【知识点】电影与戏剧、说明文
【解析】本文主要讲述了在电影中不同形状的含义。
28.细节理解题。根据第三段“In the cartoon film Up, Carl has a square face and wears square glasses...Carl is stubborn (固执的) and lonely, while Russell is lovely and full of energy.”可知,作者解释卡通人物的个性与方形的关系是靠举例子。故选D。
29.词义猜测题。根据“Every kid who draws a monster with sharp teeth draws a row of triangles, don’t they? That’s because the shape represents fear, distrust and doubt in some way.”及“And triangles are stable (稳固的) and don’t easily fall down. In films, this feature makes bad people difficult to deal with.”可推知,此处意为最愤怒的形状是三角形。故选A。
30.篇章结构题。根据第一段“We can see circles, squares and triangles everywhere in our daily life...different shapes can show different features of characters in the scenes.”可知,第一段提出文章话题,第二、三、四段,分别介绍圆形、正方形和三角形与人物的联系,第五段进行总结,所以A项符合文章结构。故选A。
31.主旨大意题。根据第一段“We can see circles, squares and triangles everywhere in our daily life...different shapes can show different features of characters in the scenes.”及全文可知,这篇短文主要讲述了在电影中不同形状的含义。故选C。

Xiao is one of the oldest musical instruments in China. It’s a kind of wind instrument. It has a long history. The music of the bamboo flute or Xiao reminds people of a lonely moon hanging in the sky of a cool autumn night. The sound of it is the sound of nature. The material is soft and elegant (典雅的).
①________
The earliest Xiao appeared during the Han Dynasty, and it was then called Qiangdi, which was popular among the Qiang people in Sichuan and Gansu. In the 1st century BC, it became popular in the Yellow River area. Later, it was developed into an instrument with six holes and today’s Xiao has developed into eight holes.
②________
Its structure is quite simple, very much like the flute, but only longer. It is usually made of bamboo. The top is sealed by bamboo which is quite different from the flute. Inside a flute, your sight can travel through from the top to the other side and then outside, but as for Xiao, you can’t. There is a mouth on the top and five sound holes on the front side and one hole at the back. Besides, there are other holes that are made to adjust (调整) the tunes (曲调), smooth the tones, and raise the volume (音量). Xiao sounds soft and beautiful.
③________
The performance levels are closely the same as those of the flute, but less flexible (灵活的), For that reason, it is only suitable to play slow and peaceful melodies (旋律), which carry people’s feelings in this situation and draw a beautiful picture of nature. People may play the Xiao alone, in a group, or in a concert, as well as folk music and together with local dramas.
32.What does the underlined word “sealed” in Paragraph 3 mean?

e. Performance levels of Xiao

C.①—c, ②—e, ③—d D.①—d, ②—b, ③—a
35.What would be the best structure of the passage?
A.①/②③④ B.①/②③/④ C.①②/③/④ D.①②③/④
【答案】32.B 33.C 34.B 35.A
【知识点】中华文化、说明文
【解析】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了中国古老的吹奏乐器 —— 箫,包括其历史发展、结构特点以及演奏水平等相关内容。
32.词句猜测题。根据后文“Inside a flute, your sight can travel through from the top to the other side and then outside, but as for Xiao, you can’t.”可知,笛子内部从顶部到另一端是通透的,而箫则不能,由此可推测箫的顶部是“封闭的”。sealed在此处表示“封闭的”,与“Closed”含义一致。故选B。
33.细节理解题。根据“The earliest Xiao appeared during the Han Dynasty, and it was then called Qiangdi, which was popular among the Qiang people in Sichuan and Gansu.”可知,最早的箫在汉朝出现时被称为“羌笛”,这是其最早使用者对它的命名。Xiao是现在的名称。故选C。
34.主旨大意题。①:根据“The earliest Xiao appeared during the Han Dynasty ... In the 1st century BC ... Later ... today’s Xiao ...”可知,该段按时间顺序介绍了箫从汉朝到现在的发展过程,核心是 “箫的发展”,对应标题c。②:根据“Its structure is quite simple ... It is usually made of bamboo ... There is a mouth on the top and five sound holes on the front side and one hole at the back ...”可知,该段详细描述了箫的材质、外观构造及孔洞作用,核心是“箫的结构”,对应标题b。③:根据“The performance levels are closely the same as those of the flute ... it is only suitable to play slow and peaceful melodies ... People may play the Xiao alone, in a group ...”
故选A。

I think it’s important not to start learning new knowledge. Instead, I’ll review the key points and formulas (公式) I’ve already learned. A relaxed state of mind can help me perform better in the exam.

I plan to do some light exercise in the morning of the last weekend, like jogging. It can help me relieve stress. Then, I’ll go through my notebooks to refresh my memory of important grammar points in English and historical events in history. I won’t do a lot of difficult exercises, just some simple ones to keep my mind active.

Students should avoid doing overly difficult or new-type questions in the last weekend. They should focus on their own weaknesses based on previous exams. If a student is weak in math, they can do some simple math exercises. Also, it’s necessary to have a proper schedule, not staying up late or being too lazy to keep a good mindset (心态).

Recently, the Palace Museum showed an old painting called A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains. This amazing classical painting attracted a huge number of people. Many of them patiently waited in line for hours just to have a look at it. Among them was Gui Haowen, a16-year-old high school student.
Gui said, “I took pictures with my phone, but they didn’t show how truly beautiful the painting was.” This made her decide to start learning about photographing cultural relics (文物) seriously. Instead, she learned to use what was around her in creative ways. For example, when she was at the Guangzhou Thirteen Hongs Museum, she wanted to photograph a silver bowl. She carefully adjusted (调整) the focus of her camera. To get a perfect picture, Gui took over 200 photos from different angles (角度).
Up to now, Gui has visited about 60 museums and taken countless wonderful photos. Every time she goes to a new city, the first thing she wants to do is to visit the local museum. She has a big dream. She hopes to use her camera to take pictures of Chinese relics that are now in other countries.
“Many of these relics are extremely beautiful and valuable, but most people in China don’t know much about them,” she said. “I wish I could show their beauty to more people. 【答案】例文
A Conflict with My Best Friend
Last month, I had a conflict with my best friend, Lily. We were planning a class presentation together, but we had different opinions on the topic. I wanted to focus on environmental protection, while she preferred discussing space exploration. Our arguments grew heated, and we stopped talking for days.
One evening, I realized silence was hurting our friendship. I decided to calm down and listen to her perspective. The next day, I asked her to talk privately. I apologized first and shared why the environment mattered to me. To my surprise, she opened up about her passion for space and how it inspired her. We took turns listening carefully without interrupting, then tried to stand in each other’s shoes. Finally, we merged our ideas: a presentation on using space technology to solve environmental issues.
This conflict taught me that differences aren’t bad—they can spark creativity. By learning to control anger, communicate honestly, and respect each other’s views, we not only resolved the problem but also strengthened our friendship. Sometimes, conflicts are like gifts in disguise. They show us how to grow through understanding and compromise.

A.Peeled. B.Closed. C.Colored. D.Repeated.
33.What did the earliest users name the instrument?
A.Xiao. B.The lyric. C.Qiangdi. D.The flute.
34.Match the title with each part.
a. Types of Xiao
b. The structure of Xiao
c. The development of Xiao
d. The processing of Xiao
e. Performance levels of Xiao

C.①—c, ②—e, ③—d D.①—d, ②—b, ③—a
35.What would be the best structure of the passage?

I think it’s important not to start learning new knowledge. Instead, I’ll review the key points and formulas (公式) I’ve already learned. For example, in math, I’ll go over the types of questions I often made mistakes in. Also, I’ll make sure to get enough sleep and keep a good mood.

—Ms. Wang, a math teacher
In the last weekend, students can read some excellent model essays to get a sense of writing styles. But don’t try to focus on some new and difficult points. Review the basic Chinese characters, words, and the ancient poems and texts that must be memorized. And they should also ensure they have a peaceful state of mind, not being too nervous.

A.Why different shapes represent different things.

C.What different shapes represent in different films.
D.How cartoons make different colors and shapes

Xiao is one of the oldest musical instruments in China. It’s a kind of wind instrument. It has a long history. The earliest Xiao appeared during the Han Dynasty, and it was then called Qiangdi, which was popular among the Qiang people in Sichuan and Gansu.

As the high school entrance examination is coming soon, you might feel a bit worried or nervous. These feelings may make you stressed out and fail to focus on your studies. In the last weekend, what can you do to help yourself get full-prepared? Here are some students’ and teachers’ opinions.
I think it’s important not to start learning new knowledge. Instead, I’ll review the key points and formulas (公式) I’ve already learned. For example, in math, I’ll go over the types of questions I often made mistakes in. Also, I’ll make sure to get enough sleep and keep a good mood.

However, she quickly found that taking photos in museums was not easy at all. Museums have strict rules to protect the relics. They don’t allow people to use flash or tripods (三脚架), and most exhibits are shown in dim (昏暗的) light.
“It was really hard to take a photo that was bright enough and clear. And trying to make it look artistic was even more difficult,” Gui remembered. But she didn’t give up.
I want to be like their eyes, letting everyone see how amazing these relics are.” Gui’s story tells us that if we have a love for something and don’t give up, we can turn our dreams into reality. And through her photos, more people can learn about and love our cultural heritage (遗产).

A relaxed state of mind can help me perform better in the exam.
— Zhang Ming, a 15-year-old student
I plan to do some light exercise in the morning of the last weekend, like jogging. It can help me relieve stress. Then, I’ll go through my notebooks to refresh my memory of important grammar points in English and historical events in history. I won’t do a lot of difficult exercises, just some simple ones to keep my mind active.
— Li Hua, a 16-year-old student
Students should avoid doing overly difficult or new-type questions in the last weekend. They should focus on their own weaknesses based on previous exams. If a student is weak in math, they can do some simple math exercises. Also, it’s necessary to have a proper schedule, not staying up late or being too lazy to keep a good mindset (心态).

I want to be like their eyes, letting everyone see how amazing these relics are.” Gui’s story tells us that if we have a love for something and don’t give up, we can turn our dreams into reality. And through her photos, more people can learn about and love our cultural heritage (遗产).

【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了中国古老的吹奏乐器 —— 箫,包括其历史发展、结构特点以及演奏水平等相关内容。
32.词句猜测题。根据后文“Inside a flute, your sight can travel through from the top to the other side and then outside, but as for Xiao, you can’t.”可知,笛子内部从顶部到另一端是通透的,而箫则不能,由此可推测箫的顶部是“封闭的”。sealed在此处表示“封闭的”,与“Closed”含义一致。故选B。
