The report has a lot of statistics about population numbers. Should we use that? M: Well, I’m worried those statistics might be confusing. Mr. Lee said we have to show that we’ve done some research, and that’s important for our grades. W: OK. Maybe we could just put some of the statistics in a diagram. M: Let’s do that. There are twenty-three students in my math class, including a few exchange students who come from different nations. Chemistry is a bit boring, and there are twenty students in that class. The teacher likes to wear formal clothes and he looks nice. My English class is small. Our English teacher always gives great lectures and I think it’s fun to speak English. Science is the biggest class. There are thirty students in that class — twenty male students and ten female students. Science is very hard, though. Each class, we have a test. I don’t like that! The first class in the afternoon is physics and I like it best. The last class of the day is music, and we are active in that class. A Yellowstone National Park offers a variety of ranger programs throughout the park, and throughout the year. I was forced to leave the familiarity with The St. Paul’s Schools and became “the new kid” at another school — a one-hallway school with no gym, where the other kids in my class had been together since kindergarten. I struggled to break into the crowd and spent lunchtime playing alone. One school day, when I headed to the kitchen table, I heard the radio, “It’s a sad day in the music world. Mr Roy Orbison has died.” “Oh no, how sad! Roy Orbison has died. Wait... Who is Roy Orbison?” I thought. I didn’t have a chance to ask. I had to get to the classroom before the bell. It was Mr Hutchison’s class. Every day, he would ask if there was anyone we wanted to pray for. That day, Johnny prayed for his sick grandfather, and Emily prayed for her grandmother who had surgery. This was my chance! Before I had time to fully think it through, my hand shot into the air. “I’d like to pray for Roy Orbison!” Silence fell over the room. The other kids looked confused, but Mr Hutchison could see the eagerness in my eyes. No one else had ever been so excited to pray for anyone in his class. “OK, Roy Orbison has been added to the prayer list” he winked I did it! This must be another way we kids make new friends: you just pray for someone. I had never met Roy Orbison, and nor had I had his album. But because of Roy, a little girl named Christine came up to me and said, “I’m really sorry for your loss. If you’re not busy with the funeral (葬礼), maybe you can come over and play after school.” Thanks to Roy and Christine, I wasn’t lonely any more. 24. Why did I pray for Roy Orbison? A. I was a true fan of him. B. I felt sorry for his death. C. I needed a reason to be noticed. D. I wanted to impress Mr Hutchison. 25. What happened after I prayed for Roy Orbison? A The whole class felt sad as I did. B. I made new friends at the new school. C. Christine offered to enjoy Roy’s music with me. D. Mr Hutchison turned a blind eye to my prayer. 26. What is the tone of the text? A. Humorous. B. Serious. C. Ironic. D. Critical. 27. Which of the following can best describe the text? A. Chances favor a prepared mind. B. Life is full of unexpected wonders. C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Where there is a will, there is a way. C 25. B 26. A 27. 根据第一段中“I was forced to leave the familiarity with The St. Paul’s Schools and became “the new kid” at another school — a one-hallway school with no gym, where the other kids in my class had been together since kindergarten. I struggled to break into the crowd and spent lunchtime playing alone.(我被迫离开熟悉的圣保罗学校,成为另一所学校的“新生”——一所只有一条走廊的学校,没有健身房,我们班的其他孩子从幼儿园起就在一起了。我挣扎着挤进人群,在午餐时间独自玩耍)”以及第三段“This was my chance! Before I had time to fully think it through, my hand shot into the air. “I’d like to pray for Roy Orbison!” Silence fell over the room. The other kids looked confused, but Mr Hutchison could see the eagerness in my eyes.(这是我的机会!我还没来得及想清楚,我的手一下子举到了空中。“我想为罗伊·奥比森祈祷!”房间里一片寂静。其他孩子看起来很困惑,但哈奇森先生能看出我眼中的热切)”可推知,作者到了新学校后很孤独,他想通过这个祈祷活动,让自己融入到同学中,即他需要一个引人注目的理由。故选C。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“I did it! This must be another way we kids make new friends: you just pray for someone.(我做到了! 这一定是我们孩子交新朋友的另一种方式:你只是为某人祈祷)”可知,作者通过这个活动,成功地交到了朋友,让自己变得不再孤独。故选B。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。结合文章内容可知,作者偶然从收音机中听到的一位逝者的讣告,名字为Roy Orbison,所以在课堂上的祈祷活动中,作者说他想为Roy Orbison祈祷,通过这次活动,作者最后交到了朋友,根据倒数第二段“I had never met Roy Orbison, and nor had I had his album. But because of Roy, a little girl named Christine came up to me and said, “I’m really sorry for your loss. If you’re not busy with the funeral (葬礼) , maybe you can come over and play after school.”(我从没见过 Roy Orbison,也没有他的专辑。但是因为罗伊,一个叫克里斯汀的小女孩走过来对我说,“我对你的损失深表遗憾。如果你不忙葬礼的话,也许你可以放学后过来玩。”)”可推知,文章使用了幽默的语气。故选A。 根据倒数第二段“I had never met Roy Orbison, and nor had I had his album. But because of Roy, a little girl named Christine came up to me and said, “I’m really sorry for your loss. If you’re not busy with the funeral (葬礼) , maybe you can come over and play after school.”(我从没见过Roy Orbison也没有他的专辑。但是因为罗伊,一个叫克里斯汀的小女孩走过来对我说,“我对你的损失深表遗憾。如果你不忙葬礼的话,也许你可以放学后过来玩。”)”可知,作者在课堂上为他偶然听到的名字祈祷,最后成功地交到了一个朋友,表明生活中充满着意想不到的奇迹,故选B。 C Doctors at the University of California, San Francisco, in the US, have developed a piece of software that can read minds. The project, supported by Facebook, hopes to help people who, because of medical conditions, are unable to communicate with others. Until now, technologies that have helped speech-impaired (语言障碍) people communicate have been too slow to allow a natural conversation. People find these things upsetting to use. This new way uses brain signals to change a person’s thoughts into text. When we want to speak, the brain sends signals to make the lips, jaw and tongue move in the right way to make an understandable sound. By discovering these brain signals, the new software is able to predict what a person want to say quickly enough to hold a conversation. The brain-reading software was tested on three volunteers who could all speak like healthy people. They were being treated for epilepsy (癫痫). As part of their treatment for epilepsy, each patient had electrodes(电极) placed on to their brain. Edward Chang, whole d the study, used these electrodes to record the signals in the patients’ brains while they listened to a list of questions and answered them. Chang and his team then built a computer program that learned to match the patients’ brain signals to the words the patients heard and the words the patients spoke. For the questions, the software matched the correct words 76%of the time. For the answers, it matched the correct words 61%of the time. Now, the mind-reading software works only for the limited set of sentences on which it was trained. Scientists hope that this early system will help them develop a more powerful one that could understand thoughts in real time to give people their voices back. Chang said, “We as scientists should try our best to help people to bring that most important and basic human ability back.” 28. What is the disadvantage of previous technologies? A. They couldn’t read people’s minds correctly. B. They couldn’t make communication understandable. C. They couldn’t serve the purpose of natural conversation. D. They couldn’t let medical conditions change for the better. 29. How does the software help people? A. By changing people’s mind into text. B. By sending signals to their lips. C. By organizing conversations for them. D. By training them how to speak. 30. What can we know about the mind-reading software according to the last paragraph? A. It has been used on a wide scale. B. It has restored the basic human ability. C. It still has plenty of room for improvement. D. It has enhanced human real-time conversation. 31. What is the attitude of the author towards the mind-reading software? A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Intolerant. D. Doubtful. C 29. A 30. C 31. 根据第二段中的“Until now, technologies that have helped speech-impaired people communicate have been too slow to allow a natural conversation.(到目前为止,帮助有语言障碍的人交流的技术速度太慢,无法进行自然的对话)”可知,以前的技术的缺点是它们不能达到自然对话的目的。 故选A。 根据最后一段中的“Now, the mind-reading software works only for the limited set of sentences on which it was trained. Scientists hope that this early system will help them develop a more powerful one that could understand thoughts in real time to give people their voices back.(现在,这种读心术软件只能对训练它的有限的句子起作用。科学家们希望这个早期的系统能帮助他们开发出一个更强大的系统,可以实时理解人们的想法,让人们重新发声)”可推断,此软件仍有很大的改进空间。故选C。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据全文可知,文章主要介绍了可以“读懂”人类思想的软件,以及软件测试的过程和改善的空间。由此推知,作者对待软件的态度是客观的。故选B。 D Given the astonishing potential of AI to transform our lives, we all need to take action to deal with our AI-powered future, and this is where AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence comes in. This absorbing new book by Catriona Campbell is a practical roadmap addressing the challenges posed by the forthcoming AI revolution (变革). In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code (代码) that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a business person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will make you feel almost as smart as AI. As we soon come to learn from AI by Design, AI is already super-smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generation of “narrow-AI” to Artificial General Intelligence. From there, Campbell says, will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is why Campbell has set out to raise awareness of AI and its future now — several decades before these developments are expected to take place. She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse. Campbell’s point is to wake up those responsible for AI—the technology companies and world leaders—so they are on the same page as all the experts currently developing it. She explains we are at a “tipping point” in history and must act now to prevent an extinction-level event for humanity. We need to consider how we want our future with AI to pan out. Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall. AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it. 32. What does the phrase “In the wrong hands” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. If read by someone poorly educated. B. If reviewed by someone ill-intentioned. C. If written by someone less competent. D. If translated by someone unacademic. 33. What is a feature of AI by Design according to the text? A. It is packed with complex codes. B. It adopts a down-to-earth writing style. C. It provides step-by-step instructions. D. It is intended for AI professionals. 34. What does Campbell urge people to do regarding AI development? A. Observe existing regulations on it. B. Reconsider expert opinions about it. C. Make joint efforts to keep it under control. D. Learn from prior experience to slow it down. 35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To recommend a book on AI. B. To give a brief account of AI history. C. To clarify the definition of AI. D. To honor an outstanding AI expert. C 33. B 34. C 35. AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence一书。 根据文章第二段“such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code (代码) that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades' professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a business person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will make you feel almost as smart as AI. 根据文章第二段“thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a business person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will make you feel almost as smart as AI.(值得庆幸的是,坎贝尔有20多年的专业经验,可以将令人兴奋的内容转化为可理解的内容。她从商业人士的实际角度而不是学者的角度出发,撰写了一本非常通俗易懂、内容丰富的指南,读完后会让你觉得自己几乎和人工智能一样聪明)”可知,坎贝尔在书中将令人兴奋的内容转化为可理解的内容,这本书的特点是通俗易懂,推测它采用了接地气的写作风格。故选B项。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章倒数第三段“She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse. (她说,我们必须保持对人工智能的控制,否则就有被边缘化甚至更糟的风险)”和文章倒数第二段“We need to consider how we want our future with AI to pan out. Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall. (我们需要考虑我们希望人工智能的未来如何发展。这种结构化的思维,加上全球监管,将使我们走向伟大,而不是走向衰败)”可知,坎贝尔敦促人们保持对人工智能的控制,考虑人工智能的未来应如何发展,所以关于人工智能的发展,坎贝尔敦促人们共同努力将其控制住。故选C项。 【35题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Given the astonishing potential of AI to transform our lives, we all need to take action to deal with our AI-powered future, and this is where AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence comes in. Maybe the storm has blown two of the little ones out of the nest. They are too young to fly, ” said the second student, whose name was Hardin. “What a pity! They'll die down there in the grass,” said the third student Martin. “Oh, well! We still need to hurry to school. “OK, Roy Orbison has been added to the prayer list” he winked (眨眼示意). I did it! This must be another way we kids make new friends: you just pray for someone. I had never met Roy Orbison and nor had I had his album. A. The whole class felt sad as I did. C Doctors at the University of California, San Francisco, in the US, have developed a piece of software that can read minds. A. Favorable. B. Objective. C Intolerant. D. Doubtful. D Given the astonishing potential of AI to transform our lives, we all need to take action to deal with our AI-powered future, and this is where AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence comes in. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Become a Good Student Student life is the most important time period for the development of career.___36___ You have to closely follow your teacher’s advice and tips to become a good student. Let's make that clear so people understand why we all need bees. Now, i've found a report that says a lot of bees are dying right now. The report has a lot of statistics about population numbers. Should we use that? Well, I worry those statistics might be confusing, mister lee said. We have to show that we've done some research that's important for our grades.
