Teens Newspaper invites you to write a true story.
The story would be something that either happened to you or someone who inspired you in the past.
Get Ready for Writing
Good afternoon, class! Welcome to our English writing workshop! Today, we are not just learners; we are going to be storytellers! Look at the screen. The Teens Newspaper is inviting you to write a true story. So, are you ready to share your inspiring moments?
Let's begin our journey of writing a true story!
An imaginary story
A true story
Get Ready for Writing
First, let's clarify our task. We are going to write a true story. So, what's the difference between a true story and an imaginary one? For example, Harry Potter and a news report about the Brownlee brothers—which is which?
Student (S): Harry Potter is imaginary. The news report is true.
You are going to write a true story to share with readers.
Think about the questions before writing.

1. Who is your story about?
2. Why do you want to write this story?
Get Ready for Writing
Exactly! A true story is based on real events. Now, before we start writing, we need to think about two key questions: 1. Who is your story about? 2. Why do you want to write this story?
Think-Pair-Share time! Please turn to your partner and talk about these two questions for one minute. You can think about a family member, a friend, or even a famous person whose story inspired you. Go!
T: Time's up! Who would like to share your idea? How about you, Lisa?
(Lisa): I want to write about my grandmother. Because she taught me how to be strong.
T: A wonderful choice! Family stories are always full of love. Any other ideas? Tony?
(Tony): I want to write about a famous basketball player. Because his spirit encourages me.
T: Great! Sports stars often have inspiring stories. Now, we have our ideas. But how can we write a good story? Let's learn from a master example.
The Final Sprint

公路越野赛

T: Please look at the title of our example story—"The Final Sprint". What does "sprint" mean? Look at the picture!
Ss: 冲刺!

1. Where and when did it happen?
2. Who were the main characters?
3. How did the story develop?
4. What was the result?

Writing a story is like climbing a mountain!
T: Now, we've deconstructed a great story. Writing a story is just like climbing a mountain! Let's look at the Mountain Diagram.
T: At the bottom, we set the scene: Setting and Characters. Then, we start climbing: the Development of the story. When we reach the top, that's the Climax—the most intense moment! After that, we go down: the Ending. And at the foot of the mountain, we add our Comments—what we learned from the journey.

Focus on Structure
T: Now, it's your turn to plan your own mountain! Please open your worksheet or take out a piece of paper. Draw your own mountain diagram and fill in the outline for "My Story" based on the idea you discussed with your partner.
1. It was the final sprint of the Santa Barbara XV Grand
Prix cycle-cross race in Spain.
Sentence Structure
Attribute
Focus on Language
T: A good story needs not only a good structure but also good language. Let's learn some sentence structures from the text to make our writing more vivid.
T: Look at this sentence: "It was the final sprint of the Santa Barbara XV Grand Prix cyclo-cross race in Spain." The part "final" is an Attribute(定语). It makes the setting more specific.
2. Just a few seconds later, fourth-placed Navarro caught up
with him.
Sentence Structure
Adverbial (time)
Focus on Language
T: Another example: "Just a few seconds later, fourth-placed Navarro caught up with him." "Just a few seconds later" is an Adverbial (time) (时间状语). It makes the sequence of events clear.
3. Navarro let Esteban run ahead of him.
Sentence Structure
Verb
Object
Object Complement
Focus on Language
T: And this one: "Navarro let Esteban run ahead of him." Here, "let" is the verb, "Esteban" is the object, and "run ahead of him" is the Object Complement(宾语补足语). This structure is very useful in storytelling.
Attribute
Adverbial (time, place, way, reason...)
Verb+Object+Object Complement
Details
Focus on Language
T: So, when you write, remember to use Attributes to add details, Adverbials to show time/place/way, and rich verb patterns to describe actions.

Teens Newspaper invites you to write a true story.

Writing Time
T: You can also refer to the second example, "Just a Brother", if you need more inspiration. You have 10-12 minutes to write your first draft. Let's begin!
It was the final part of the 2016 World Triathlon Series in Mexico. With just 700 metres to go, Alistair Brownlee was in third place and his younger brother, Jonny, was in the lead.

JUST A BROTHER—Setting+Characters
Alistair pushed himself towards the finishing line in the burning heat, but as he came round the corner, he saw his brother about to fall onto the track. Alistair had to choose—brotherly love, or a chance to win the race?
JUST A BROTHER—Development
For Alistair, the choice was clear. His brother was in trouble. He had to help. Alistair ran towards Jonny, caught him and started pulling him towards the finish line. Alistair then pushed his brother over the line.

JUST A BROTHER—Climax
The move put Jonny in second place and Alistair himself in third. It was an unexpected end to the race, but Alistair did not want to discuss it with the media. He just wanted to see his younger brother, who had been rushed to the medical area.
JUST A BROTHER—Ending
Watched by millions, the ending to the race has divided opinions: should the brothers have been disqualified or highly praised for their actions? But for Alistair, at that moment, he was no longer an athlete aiming for a medal—he was just a brother.
