My First Bus Trip to School
Last month, I started my new life as a vocational school student. My home is not near the school, so I can’t walk there. My parents suggested I take the bus every day. I was a little nervous at first because I had never taken a bus alone before.
On the first day, my mom woke me up early. We walked to the bus stop together. There were already a few people waiting there. Ten minutes later, the No. 15 bus came. It was not very crowded. I said goodbye to my mom and got on the bus. The driver smiled at me and told me to find a seat.
I sat next to a girl who looked friendly. She told me she was also a student at my school. We talked about our new classes and teachers on the way. The bus stopped at four stops before reaching our school. When I got off the bus, I felt happy. Taking the bus was easier than I thought! Now, I enjoy my bus trips to school every day.

Different Ways to Go to Work
People in different places use different ways to go to work. This depends on where they live and how far their workplaces are.
In big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, many people take the subway. The subway is fast and it never gets stuck in traffic. So people can get to work on time easily. Some people who live near their offices ride bikes. Riding a bike is good for health and it doesn’t cost any money.
In small towns, there are not many subways. Most people drive cars or take buses to work. Some people even walk if their workplaces are only five or ten minutes away.
In some villages, people have other ways. For example, in some places near rivers, people take small boats to cross the river to work. In mountain areas, some people walk or ride horses because the roads are not good for cars.
No matter which way people choose, the most important thing is to get to work safely.
6. What makes people choose different ways to go to work?
A. Their favorite colors
B. The distance of their workplaces and living places
C. The size of their houses
D. Their favorite food
7. Why do many people in big cities take the subway?
A. Because it’s cheap
B. Because it’s fast and not stuck in traffic
C. Because it’s very comfortable
D. Because it can carry many people
8. What do people in small towns usually do if they live near their offices?
A. Take the subway
B. Ride horses
C. Walk
D. Take a boat
9. How do people near rivers sometimes go to work?
A. By small boat
B. By car
C. By subway
D. By bike
10. What is the most important thing for people to go to work?
A. To be fast
B. To be cheap
C. To be safe
D. To be comfortable
答案:6. B 7.B 8.C 9.A 10.C
6.解析:原文明确提到“This depends on where they live and how far their workplaces are.”,即人们选择不同通勤方式的依据是居住地点和工作地点的距离,故选B。
7. 解析:根据文中“The subway is fast and it never gets stuck in traffic.”可知,大城市很多人选择地铁,核心原因是地铁速度快且不会堵车,故选B。
8. 解析:原文指出“In small towns... Some people even walk if their workplaces are only five or ten minutes away.”,说明小镇上若工作地点距离近(步行5到10分钟),人们通常会选择步行,故选C。
9. 解析:文中提到“in some places near rivers, people take small boats to cross the river to work.”,可见河边的人有时会乘坐小船去上班,故选A。
10. 解析:文章最后一句“No matter which way people choose, the most important thing is to get to work safely.”直接表明,人们上班时最重要的是保证安全,故选C。

Dear Peter,
I’m glad to receive your email. You asked about the common ways people go to work or school in my city. Let me tell you about it.
The two most popular ways here are taking the subway and riding bikes. The subway is really fast—even during rush hours, it never gets stuck in traffic, so people can get to their destinations on time. As for bikes, they are cheap and good for health. Riding a bike also helps protect the environment by reducing air pollution.
My favorite way is riding a bike. My home is not too far from my school, and I can enjoy the fresh air and beautiful street views on the way. It’s also a great way to exercise before starting a busy school day.
What about the commuting ways in your city? Please write back and tell me.
Yours,
Li Hua
