Maya Lin, designer and sculptor, has created some of the most iconic works and spaces with the belief that art can address important issues. Her latest projects are no different, from museums to sculptures for Presidential centers.
Lin, 62, grew up in Ohio, the daughter of college professors who were Chinese immigrants. As a 21-year-old student at Yale University, she gained national fame when her entry won a design competition for the new Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. Her winning design — two black granite (花岗岩) walls carved with the names of US service members who died in the Vietnam War (1954 -1975) or remain missing — is considered one of the most influential in modern architecture.
Lin went on to design the 1989 Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, and dozens of other projects globally, all with social and environmental justice in mind. She told The Wall Street Journal she uses facts in her art. She said, “I am going to present you with what the story is, but I am not going to draw the conclusion for you.” Currently underway is Lin’s plan for the new Museum of Chinese in America in New York City. Lin said she wants it to be a celebration of Chinese American stories and contributions to the country.
Lin is also designing a sculpture to honor former President Barack Obama’s mother, who died in 1995, at the Obama Presidential Center in Illinois. When Obama awarded Lin the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016, he called her work “physical acts of poetry, each reminding us that the most important element in art or architecture is human emotion.”
1. What is Maya Lin’s principle to make her creation?
A. Art is to lead to reputation. B. Art is a physical act of poetry.
C. Art can be a way to address affairs. D. Art is to create something distinguished.
2. What is expressed in her work for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial?
A. The influence of the Vietnam War on America.
B. US soldiers’ sacrifice in the Vietnam War.
C. The bloody and cruel scenes of the Vietnam War.
D. Vietnamese soldiers’ fearless fight in the Vietnam War.
3. Where will the sculpture of Barack Obama’s mother be housed?
A. Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. B. Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama.
C. Obama Presidential Center in Illinois. D. Museum of Chinese in America in New York City.
根据第一段中“Maya Lin, designer and sculptor, has created some of the most iconic works and spaces with the belief that art can address important issues.(林璎,设计师和雕塑家,带着艺术可以解决重要问题的理念创造了一些最具标志性的作品和空间。她最近的项目也不例外,从博物馆到总统中心的雕塑)”可知,Maya Lin所创作的作品一直践行着艺术可以解决重要问题的理念;由此可知,林璎创作的原则是艺术可以是解决重要事情的一个方法。故选C。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“As a 21-year-old student at Yale University, she gained national fame when her entry won a design competition for the new Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. Her winning design — two black granite (花岗岩) walls carved with the names of US service members who died in the Vietnam War (1954 -1975) or remain missing — is considered one of the most influential in modern architecture.(21岁时,她还是耶鲁大学的一名学生,凭借为华盛顿特区新越南战争纪念碑设计的方案赢得设计大赛,从此声名鹊起。她的获奖设计是两面黑色花岗岩墙体,上面刻有1954至1975年越南战争中阵亡或失踪的美国军人姓名,这一设计被视作现代建筑领域最具影响力的作品之一。)”可知,她的获奖设计越战退伍军人纪念碑上刻有在越南战争中阵亡或失踪的美国军人的名字;由此可知,她所设计的作品越战退伍军人纪念碑表达了美国士兵在越南战争中的牺牲。故选B。
【3题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Lin is also designing a sculpture to honor former President Barack Obama’s mother, who died in 1995, at the Obama Presidential Center in Illinois.(林还正在设计一座雕塑,以纪念前总统巴拉克·奥巴马的母亲。这位母亲于1995年去世,该雕塑将矗立在伊利诺伊州的奥巴马总统中心内)”可知,奥巴马母亲的雕塑将被安置在伊利诺伊州的奥巴马总统中心。故选C。

We’ve all been there: those times you need to argue your point of view to someone who you know disagrees with you. You immediately go to your keyboard and start to type out that 280-character tweet, the Facebook reply, or a paragraphs-long email. Surely the reason, logic, and strong power of your written words will convince whoever it is who disagrees with you to see your point of view. But new research suggests a different idea.
That research was conducted by Juliana Schroeder, assistant professor of University of California, Berkeley, and her colleagues. In Schroeder’s study of almost 300 people, participants were asked to watch, listen, and read arguments about subjects they agreed or disagreed with. They were asked to judge the character of the communicator and the quality of the argument. Schroeder’s team found that the participants who watched or listened to the communicator were less dismissive (抵触的) of their claims than when they read that communicator’s same argument.
The idea for her study came from a newspaper article about a politician. One of us read a speech that was printed in a newspaper from a politician with whom he strongly disagreed. The next week, he heard the exact same speech playing on a radio station. He was shocked by how different his reaction was toward the politician when he read the speech compared to when he heard it. When he read the statement, the politician seemed idiotic, but when he heard it spoken, the politician actually sounded reasonable.
So in the workplace, speaking to someone in person often involves nothing more than walking a few doors down to their office. And that’s exactly what you should do if you need to convince that boss or colleague of why your blueprint for the company or project is the right one.
Only as a last way should you try to communicate with someone who you disagree with over social media. Twitter’s limited text allowance and social media users’ short attention make arguing your point an uphill battle.
4. What’s the result of the research?
A. People prefer to communicate with key board.
B. Written words are more logical and reasonable.
C. Oral, not written, communication works better.
D. When reading an argument, the participants were less dismissive than hearing it.
5. Why is the politician mentioned in paragraph3?
A. To introduce the politician’s speech.
B. To introduce the topic for discussion.
C. To summarize the previous paragraphs.
D. To explain why Schroeder conducted the research.
6. What does the underlined word “idiotic’’ in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Wise. B. Practical. C. Silly. D. Special.
7. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. Communicating with others over social media is encouraged.
B. Arguing over social media is more convenient than speaking in person.
C. It’s difficult to fully explain your points due to social media’s limitation.
D. To persuade your boss, you need to walk to his office and leave a message.
C 5. D 6. C 7. C
根据第二段“Schroeder’s team found that the participants who watched or listened to the communicator were less dismissive (抵触的)of their claims than when they read that communicator’s same argument. (Schroeder的研究小组发现,观看或聆听沟通者讲话的参与者对沟通者的观点不像阅读沟通者同样的观点时那么不屑一顾)”可知,研究发现是口头沟通而不是书面沟通效果更好。故选C。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The idea for her study came from a newspaper article about a politician.(她的研究灵感来自报纸上一篇关于一位政治家的文章)”可知,第三段提到政治家就是为了解释为什么Schroeder开展这项研究,故选D。
根据最后一段“Twitter’s limited text allowance and social media users’ short attention make arguing your point an uphill battle. (推特有限的文字限制和社交媒体注意力的短暂,使得争论你的观点成为一场艰苦的战斗)”可知,社交媒体的局限性使你很难解释你的观点,故选C。
C
Some people often wonder whether they are fighting a battle with their genes to maintain a healthy weight. In fact, researchers have provided plenty of evidence that people are born with tendencies to be lighter or heavier. For example, studies of identical twins have revealed great similarity in their overall weight. Part of this similarity may be explained by the finding that some people are born to burn a lot of calories just through ordinary day-to-day activities while others are not. Those who are not are more at risk for weight gain.
Researchers have discovered some of the actual genetic mechanisms (机制) that may make some individuals more likely to be obese. For example, a gene has been found that appears to control signals to the brain that enough fat has been stored in the body in the course of a meal — so the individual should stop eating. The gene influences the production of leptin (瘦蛋白), which keeps appetite under control. If leptin doesn’t work well, it is likely that individuals will continue to eat. Thus the gene that controls leptin appears to have a critical influence on the potential for obesity.
The confirmation that leptin plays a role in weight control has encouraged researchers to identify and understand other weight-related genes. Recent attention has focused on a gene called GAD2. GAD2 helps control the amount of the neurotransmitter (神经递质) GABA.In general, when more GABA is available, appetite is increased. For that reason, people who have a form of GAD2 that allows more GABA to be available may be at risk for overeating. You can see that GAD2 is not directly an obesity gene. Rather it has an indirect influence on obesity through its direct influence on GABA.
Genetic research holds out the promise of innovative solutions to obesity. Researchers hope that an understanding of the link between genes and weight control will enable them to provide new drug treatments. However, even the most optimistic researchers provide a warning: “Innovative drugs will be effective only when they are used along with lifestyle changes.”
8. How does the author develop Paragraph 1?
A. By giving an example. B. By asking questions.
C. By making an assumption. D. By reasoning and analyzing.
9. What do researchers suggest doing in the last paragraph?
A. Taking new drugs. B. Trying to adjust GAD2.
C. Keeping a healthy lifestyle. D. Understanding genetic effects.
10. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Reason Why You Become Too Heavy
B. How Does Genetics Contribute to Obesity?
C. The Sorts of Genes Helping You Keep Thin
D. What Influence Does Food Have on Weight?
根据第一段内容“Some people often wonder whether they are fighting a battle with their genes to maintain a healthy weight. Those who are not are more at risk for weight gain.(有些人常常想知道,自己是否是在与自身的基因抗争,以保持健康的体重。实际上,研究人员已经提供了大量证据表明,人们生来就具有体重较轻或较重的倾向。例如,对同卵双胞胎的研究显示,他们的总体体重具有很大的相似性。这种相似性部分可以由以下发现来解释:有些人天生在日常活动中就会消耗大量卡路里,而另一些人则不会。那些不会消耗大量卡路里的人更容易体重增加。)”可知,在第一段,作者通过举例解释胖或瘦与基因有关。故选A。
根据最后一段“However, even the most optimistic researchers provide a warning: “Innovative drugs will be effective only when they are used along with lifestyle changes.”(然而,即便是最为乐观的研究人员也发出警告:“创新药物只有与生活方式的改变相结合使用时,才会有效果。”)”
根据第二段“Researchers have discovered some of the actual genetic mechanisms (机制) that may make some individuals more likely to be obese. (研究人员已经发现了某些具体的遗传机制,这些机制可能使得某些人更容易肥胖。)”并通读全文可知,文章主要讲的是某些具体的遗传机制可能会使某些人更容易肥胖的。因此推断B选项“基因是如何导致肥胖的?”最符合文章标题。故选B。
第二节 语句排序(共5小题; 每小题2分,满分10分)
11. 将下列几个部分(A、B、C、D 和 E)按题号排序,构成一个符合逻辑的完整语篇。
A. On social media sites, people tend to post only positive updates that make them appear happy and friendly. But smiling photos can hide real problems. Remember the saying: on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog. A young person could be old; a woman could be a man; we could even be sharing our information with criminals.
B. But this doesn’t mean that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater. Although technology has changed the way we acquire friends, the meaning of friendship and our longing for friends remain the same. As Aristotle said, no one would choose to live without friends, even if he had all other goods.
C. Nowadays, we can move around the world and still stay in touch with the people that we want to remain friends with. Social media tools let us see what our friends are up to and maintain friendships. All you need is a wi-fi connection.
D. It depends. If people always exchange true personal information online, then yes, these friendships can be real and meaningful. But we need to keep in mind that what we see on social media is often not the whole truth about a person.
E. The digital age also enables us to find people who share our interests, such as collecting model cars or playing an unusual instrument. Whatever our hobbies, the Internet can connect us with others who also enjoy doing them, even if they live on the other side of the world. But when you “friend” people online, does this mean that they really are your friends?
________ ________ ________ ________ ________
C ②. E ③. D ④. A ⑤. B
D 以 “It depends.” A 的细节(如 “smiling photos can hide real problems”)例证 D 中的 “not the whole truth”,强化风险提示。

B
D. When reading an argument the participants were less dismissive than hearing it.
A. On social media sites people tend to post only positive updates that make them appear happy and friendly. But smiling photos can hide real problems. Remember the saying: on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog. A young person could be old; a woman could be a man; we could even be sharing our information with criminals.
B. But this doesn’t mean that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater.
