B
Jared was my regular hiking, ice-climbing and mountain-biking fellow. We were on an overnight trip, just a single night, and what he’d brought for dinner was this: Rice. Literally nothing else.
This was not a result of him trying to pack as light as possible, nor was it because he was broke. He wasn’t. I tried to convince him to at least put soy sauce (酱油) on it. But no, Jared wasn’t having a bar of it. “I don’t need it,” he said flatly.
Now, if he was talking only about outdoors’ meals, I’d almost get it. When you’re ravenous after a day of burning off calories walking or climbing or backcountry skiing in the mountains, how awesome do things taste! I know what you’re thinking; it’s simply that, as the saying goes, hunger is the best sauce. And I agree. Absolutely.
But there’s more to it than that. Last month, I went down the coast car camping with my family. One morning, my wife made a statement. “I don’t see the point,” she said. “It’s so much work, camping. But the views at home are better. The beds are more comfortable. It’s more peaceful. And at home, the food is better.” I’ll admit she’s right about the first three. But the food? We had a simple pasta one night, snags another, chicken curry the third, but they all tasted good. Better than at home. And it wasn’t simply that we were hungry; it was because we were camping.
The real point I want to get to is that meals largely taste so good when I’m camping because I’m reminded of some things easily forgotten at home, where I can simply go to the cupboard, or the supermarket, and get whatever takes my fancy. Life, when you’re camping, is reduced to its essentials, and I am reminded of how lucky most of us are to be dry and warm and fed. More importantly, I am reminded that sadly, and in fact unforgivably, not all of us are. And I am reminded that we, as a society, should do better for them.
4. Why did Jared bring only rice for dinner on the trip?
A. He didn’t like soy sauce. B. He preferred to travel light.
C. He couldn’t afford a better meal. D. He enjoyed simple outdoor meals.
5. What does the underlined word “ravenous” in the third paragraph mean?
A. Tired. B. Starving. C. Fulfilled. D. Refreshed.
6. What does the author think of camping?
A. It is a test of adaptability. B. It is a chance to enjoy good food.
C. It is a reminder of the good life he has. D. It is a bonding experience for his family.
7. What makes the author sad according to the last paragraph?
A. Some people lack the basic necessities of life.
B. Some people fail to appreciate what they have.
C. People easily forget the beauty of simple things.
D. People easily quit camping due to its discomfort.
D 5. B 6. C 7. A
根据第二段中“This was not a result of him trying to pack as light as possible, nor was it because he was broke. He wasn’t. I tried to convince him to at least put soy sauce on it. But no, Jared wasn’t having a bar of it. ‘I don’t need it,’ he said flatly.
根据划线词所在部分“When you’re ravenous after a day of burning off calories walking or climbing or backcountry skiing in the mountains, how awesome do things taste! I know what you’re thinking; it’s simply that, as the saying goes, hunger is the best sauce. (当你在山里徒步、爬山或野外滑雪消耗了一天的卡路里后感到ravenous时,食物尝起来是多么美味啊!我知道你在想什么;俗话说,饥饿是最好的调味品)”中“after a day of burning off calories”和“hunger is the best sauce”可推知,经过一天的卡路里消耗后,会感到饥饿,食物会变得美味。
根据最后一段中“The real point I want to get to is that meals largely taste so good when I’m camping because I’m reminded of some things easily forgotten at home, where I can simply go to the cupboard, or the supermarket, and get whatever takes my fancy. Life, when you’re camping, is reduced to its essentials, and I am reminded of how lucky most of us are to be dry and warm and fed. (我真正想说的是,当我在露营时,食物的味道很大程度上是如此的好,因为我想起了一些在家里很容易忘记的东西,在家里我可以简单地去橱柜或超市,买到我喜欢的任何东西。当你在露营时,生活只剩下最基本的东西,我想起我们大多数人都是多么幸运,能保持干燥、温暖和吃饱)”可知,作者认为露营能让他想起在家里很容易忘记的东西,想起自己所拥有的美好生活。故选C项。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Life, when you’re camping, is reduced to its essentials, and I am reminded of how lucky most of us are to be dry and warm and fed. More importantly, I am reminded that sadly, and in fact unforgivably, not all of us are. And I am reminded that we, as a society, should do better for them. (当你在露营时,生活只剩下最基本的东西,我想起我们大多数人都是多么幸运,能保持干燥、温暖和吃饱。更重要的是,我想起了可悲的、事实上不可原谅的是,并非所有人都如此。我想起作为一个社会,我们应该为他们做得更好)”可知,作者想到并非所有人都能保持干燥、温暖和吃饱,作者因为想到一些人缺乏基本生活必需品而感到难过。故选A项。
C
Bacteria (细菌) know how to rough it out all over the earth. Ask most of them where they’d truly prefer to settle through, and a kitchen sponge (海绵) would probably top the list. Yes, it turns out that the very tool we use to clean our plates, which is warm, damp, and full of nutritious food pieces, is packed of tiny life.
Lingchong You, a biologist at Duke University, along with his team, used computers to model the complex environment of a sponge for a 2022 study. He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something that really matters for promoting bacterial growth. This holds significance as certain bacteria tend to grow independently while others demand the companionship of others. Within a sponge filled with holes and pockets, there exist such an abundance of diverse structures that everyone attains a state of satisfaction.
Nevertheless, it does not necessarily follow that these tools present a health risk to us as well. Bacteria exist everywhere and not all are harmful; in fact, many perform vital jobs. The important question is, therefore, are the bacteria found in sponges even worth worrying about?
In 2017, Jennifer Quinlan, a professor of food safety, and her colleagues, collected kitchen sponges from 100 homes, finding that only 1 – 2% of those sponges contained bacteria linked to food poisoning in humans and the ones that did contained only small amounts of harmful bacteria. “The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause illness, and they’re just going to make them smell.” says Quinlan. “Having said that, there is a possibility that if you use a sponge to wipe up raw meat that you could have some of those disease-causing bacteria on there, and studies have found that those bacteria can be separated from kitchen sponges.”
This is not the whole story yet. If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case.
8. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Sponges are perfect tools in the kitchen.
B. Bacteria prefer to live in dry environment.
C. Kitchen sponges are good home for bacteria.
D. Bacteria affect kitchen sponges’ performance.
9. What did Lingchong You find in his study?
A. How sponges are exactly structured. B. What encourages bacterial growth.
C. How bacteria react to the environment. D. Why bacteria keep company with each other.
10. What does Quinlan think of bacteria on sponges?
A. Relatively harmless. B. Poorly adaptive,
C. Surprisingly unpleasant. D. Widely distributed.
11. What will be probably discussed in the following paragraph?
A. Proofs of bacterial threat. B. The classification of bacteria.
C. Methods to control bacterial growth. D. Research into applications of bacteria.
C 9. B 10. A 11. A
根据文章第一段“Bacteria (细菌) know how to rough it out all over the earth. Ask most of them where they’d truly prefer to settle though, and a kitchen sponge (海绵) would probably top the list. Yes, it turns out that the very tool we use to clean our plates, which is warm, damp, and full of nutritious food pieces, is packed of tiny life.(细菌知道如何在地球上的各个地方顽强生存。
根据文章第二段“He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something that really matters for promoting bacterial growth.(他发现,海绵上那些大小各异的孔隙对于促进细菌生长至关重要。)”
根据文章第四段“In 2017, Jennifer Quinlan, a professor of food safety, and her colleagues, collected kitchen sponges from 100 homes, finding that only 1 – 2% of those sponges contained bacteria linked to food poisoning in humans and the ones that did contained only small amounts of harmful bacteria. “The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause illness, and they’re just going to make them smell.” says Quinlan.(2017年,食品安全领域的教授Jennifer Quinlan和她的同事们从100个家庭中收集了厨房海绵,发现这些海绵中只有1%到2%含有与人类食物中毒相关的细菌,而且确实含有有害细菌的海绵中,有害细菌的含量也很少。Quinlan说:“海绵上绝大多数细菌不会致病,它们只是会让海绵产生异味。)”可知,Quinlan 认为海绵上绝大多数细菌不会引发疾病,只有极少数海绵含有与人类食物中毒有关的细菌,而且这些细菌的含量也很少,所以她认为海绵上的细菌相对无害。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“This is not the whole story yet. If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case.(事情还不止如此。如果危险的细菌碰巧来到了海绵上,海绵特殊的构造会使它成为这些细菌生长和繁殖的理想场所。而且有证据表明情况确实如此。)”可知,由于最后一段提到有证据表明危险细菌会在海绵上生长繁殖,所以接下来很可能会讨论细菌威胁的证据具体是什么。故选A。
D
Killer whales hunt fish with sounds as clicks and buzzes — they choose and chase their prey with sound waves. But a common feature of modern ocean life may be like a salmon’s invisible cloak (隐形斗篷), making the whales’ favorite meal harder to find. What is to blame? Boat traffic noise.
Ocean noise has been increasing over the years, and an international research team recently reported in Global Change Biology that when the water got too noisy, whales spent more time looking for food but caught fewer fish. The study tracked every move and sound that individual killer whales made, as well as the sound reaching those whales. This is the first time scientists have linked noise reaching a given killer whale to their foraging (觅食) success, says lead author Jennifer Tennessen.
The noise problem is one that Tennessen views as chronic, yet possibly more straightforward to fix than declining fish populations or pollution — ships could simply slow down to make less noise. Fortunately, with the guidance of both governmental and nongovernmental groups, some ship operators are slowing down.
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority in Canada reported in 2023 that 87 percent of ships slowed or moved over for southern resident whales in critical habitat, which led to a decrease of 4.2 decibels (分贝) compared to 2019, before slowdowns began. Washington ports and other local authorities join in a program of voluntary slowdowns in Washington waters called Quiet Sound, which offers information on killer whale locations. About 70 percent of ships follow Quiet Sound’s guidelines and voluntarily slow down in killer whale critical habitat.
The talk about innovations in propeller (螺旋桨) technology is also positive. A propeller, for example, is based on a design for a quieter drone propeller. If claims of a more efficient and quieter boat propeller are true, that’s good news for both reducing fuel use and quieting traffic.
Tennessen says increasing ship noise is a problem in oceans around the world. “We’re finally able to measure the impacts that it’s having on wildlife,” she says, “and we’re finding that the impacts are numerous.”
12. Why does the author mention a salmon’s invisible cloak?
A. To introduce the feature of sound waves.
B. To describe the environment in whales’ hunting.
C. To emphasize the invisibility of salmons’ cloak.
D. To demonstrate the characteristic of whales’ hunting.
13. What do the statistics indicate in paragraph 4?
A. Noise reduction is ineffective.
B. Ship operators ignore guidelines.
C. Quiet Sound prioritizes noise monitoring.
D. Voluntary slowdowns lead to noise reduction.
14. What is the significance of propeller technology innovations?
A. To address noise issues.
B. To reduce fuel efficiency.
C. To follow Quiet Sound’s guidelines.
D. To help measure influences on wildlife.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Ships Slow Down for Whales.
B. Boat Noise Clouds Whale Foraging.
C. Killer Whales Battle Noise Pollution.
D. Technology Innovations Silence Propellers.
B 13. D 14. A 15. B
根据第一段中的“But a common feature of modern ocean life may be like a salmon’s invisible cloak (隐形斗篷), making the whales’ favorite meal harder to find. What is to blame?
根据第四段中的“The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority in Canada reported in 2023 that 87 percent of ships slowed or moved over for southern resident whales in critical habitat, which led to a decrease of 4.2 decibels (分贝) compared to 2019, before slowdowns began.(加拿大温哥华弗雷泽港务局在2023年报告说,在关键栖息地内,87%的船只为南部常驻鲸类减速或避让,这导致与2019年开始减速前相比,噪音水平降低了4.2分贝。)”
根据倒数第二段中的“A propeller, for example, is based on a design for a quieter drone propeller. If claims of a more efficient and quieter boat propeller are true, that’s good news for both reducing fuel use and quieting traffic.(例如,一种基于更安静无人机螺旋桨设计的螺旋桨。如果更加高效且更安静的船用螺旋桨的说法属实,这对于减少燃料使用和降低交通噪音都是好消息。)”可知,螺旋桨技术的创新旨在制造更加安静和高效的船用螺旋桨,有助于解决噪音问题,由此可知,螺旋桨技术创新的意义是解决噪音问题。故选A项。
根据首段中的“But a common feature of modern ocean life may be like a salmon’s invisible cloak (隐形斗篷), making the whales’ favorite meal harder to find. What is to blame?

Diana stepped into her college dormitory, her heart pounding with a mix of excitement and nervousness. The room was small but bright, with two beds, two desks, and a bookshelf. Her roommate, Lily, was already there, unpacking a box filled with colorful pillows and a huge teddy bear. “Glad to see you I’m Lily,” she greeted with a broad smile, extending her hand. Diana smiled back shyly, “I’m Diana.”
At first, everything went smooth. They chatted about their high schools, favorite movies, and dreams for college. But soon, Diana noticed some differences. Lily was an early riser, always getting up at 6:00 and humming (哼唱) softly while getting dressed. Diana, however, loved sleeping in and often felt annoyed by the early morning noise. Lily also had a habit of leaving her things everywhere, with her shoes by the door, her books on Diana’s desk, and her snacks on the windowsill (窗台).
One evening, Diana came back to find her favorite notebook missing. She searched for it everywhere but couldn’t find it. “Have you seen my notebook, Lily?” she asked, trying to keep her voice calm. “Oh, yeah,” Lily replied casually, “I used it to take some notes in my math class. Is that okay?” Diana felt her face turned red with anger. “No, it’s not okay” she screamed. “You should ask for my permission before using my items” Lily looked astonished and a little hurt. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you,” she said guiltily.
After that, the atmosphere in the room became tense. They seldom talked, and when they did, their words were cold. Lily felt lonely and missed her old friends. She thought about talking to her mom on the phone, but she didn’t want to disturb her. One night, as Diana lay in bed, she heard Lily crying softly. “Should I hold a friendly attitude and talk with her patiently?” Diana hesitated for a moment and thought to herself.

From that day on, the relationship between Diana and Lily changed.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Diana decided to apologize. She arose before Lily and wrote a note with care. “Dear Lily, I regret my anger deeply. Though we differ, I long for us to get on well again,” it read. She placed the note on Lily’s pillow and headed to the cafeteria for hand-made cookies. Returning, she found Lily smiling over the note. “Diana, this is so thoughtful,” she said. “I wish to apologize too. Shall we make room rules together?” Diana nodded eagerly, and they spent the whole morning drafting guidelines like “ask before using others’ items” and “remain tidy” so that they would live in harmony with each other.
From that day on, the relationship between Diana and Lily changed. They obeyed the rules they fashioned and respected each other’s different habits. When Lily wanted to stay up late studying, she would use a small portable lamp instead of turning on the main light. When Diana needed to sleep in, Lily would tiptoe around the room. They also started sharing hobbies and worked out together. One weekend, they even decorated their room with pictures and posters. Looking around at the comfortable room, Diana felt content. She had learned that mutual understanding and communication contributed to a harmonious relationship.

Now if he was talking only about outdoors’ meals, I’d almost get it.
Nevertheless it does not necessarily follow that these tools present a health risk to us as well.
If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The next morning, Diana decided to apologize.
