A group of Canadian kids are already spreading a bit of Christmas spirit in Halifax,Nova Scotia, by wrapping warm clothing around lamp poles for the city’s homeless to pick up and use. The sight of warmly dressed poles caught recently the attention of locals, who stopped to click pictures to share on social media.
Every year, Tara Atkins collects warm clothing from her community, in order to give to the less fortunate. This year, she took to Facebook to call for donations and the response was strong—their front porch (门厅)was filled with bags of clothes. Since the family was traveling to Halifax on November 15 with their daughter Jayda and seven of her friends to celebrate her 8th birthday, Tara decided it was the perfect time to teach the children a valuable life lesson.
The kids spent time handing out coats to any homeless they met on the streets and tied the rest around lamp posts for o thers to pick up. According to Tara, the experience helped the children better understand the difficult situation of homeless people having to confront the severe winter on the s treets.
There is no way to be sure that the coats left hanging on street posts were actually picked up by the homeless, but Tara says she isn’t too worried about that. By next morning, all the jackets and scarves on the posts were gone. Photographs of the inspiring project have been shared about 8,000 times on Facebook, and got over 10,000 likes. Tara, who did something similar in Toronto in December last year, says she’s already planning next year’s coat drive. She’s hoping to spread the word well ahead of time, so more people can contribute. And she also wants to add $ 5 fast food gift cards so the recipients (接受者)can also enjoy a hot meal. “We’ve had help from others when we were in need, and we knew how great it made us feel,” said Zachary Atkins, Tara’s husband.
4. How did locals respond at the sight of the warmly dressed poles?
A. They got confused.
B. They were annoyed.
C They took photos and spread the news.
D. They unwrapped and put on the clothes.
5. Why did Tara Atkins go to Halifax on November 15?
A. To go sightseeing.
B. To celebrate Jayda’s birthday.
C. To collect warm clothing for the homeless.
D. To spend the holiday with family.
6. What does the underlined word “confront” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Face. B. Discuss.
C. Enjoy. D. Describe.
7. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Tara is sure that the coats will be picked up by the homeless.
B. People responded warmly to the photographs on Facebook.
C. Tara is appealing to the government to donate.
D. Zachary Atkins is against what Tara has done.
C 5. B 6. A 7. B
The sight of warmly dressed poles caught recently the attention of locals, who stopped to click pictures to share on social media.
Since the family was traveling to Halifax on November 15 with their daughter Jayda and seven of her friends to celebrate her 8th birthday可知,她去那里是为了庆祝女儿的生日。
根据前面语境“the experience helped the children better understand the difficult situation of homeless people”判断后面的意思是“在大街上要面对寒冬”,故选A。
Photographs of the inspiring project have been shared about 8,000 times on Facebook, and got over 10,000 likes. Tara, who did something similar in Toronto in December last year可知,在脸谱网上很多人关注和点赞,由此可推断出,人们对这些照片反应热烈。
如文中常用refer to,be called或that’s to say,such as等。②逻辑猜词可以根据同义词、反义词、因果关系词等猜测词义,例如,similarly,the same as,but,however,while,on the other hand, since ,because等,所猜词与这些提示词前/后面部分的含义一样、相反或是前因后果。
C
“YEARS ago when I was at the Grand Canyon, I remember someone coming up to the canyon’s edge, taking a shot with their camera and then walking away, like ‘got it done’, barely even glancing at the magnificent scene sprawling(展开) in front of them,” Linda Henkel, a scientist at Fairfield University, US told Live Science.
Henkel was surprised by how obsessed people are with taking pictures these days —before dinner, during friends’ birthday parties, on museum tours and so on. You know people just like that, don’t you?
They keep taking pictures because they think that it helps record the moment, but as Henkel’s latest study has just found out, this obsession may prevent their brains from remembering what actually happened, reported The Guardian.
In her study, Henkel led a group of college students around a museum and asked them to simply observe 15 objects and to photograph 15 others. The next day the students’ memory of the tour was tested, and the results showed that they were less accurate in recognizing the objects and they remembered fewer details about them if they photographed them.
“When people rely on technology to remember for them-counting on the camera to record the event and thus not needing to attend to it fully themselves, it can have a negative effect on how well they remember their experiences,” Henkel explained.
But there is also an exception: if students zoomed in to photograph part of an object, their memory actually improved, and those who focused the lens(镜头)on a specific area could even recall parts that weren’t in the frame.
So basically, this study is saying that constantly taking pictures can harm your memory. But shouldn’t reviewing pictures we have taken help wake up our memories? This is true, but only if we spend enough time doing it.
“In order to remember, we have to access and interact with the photos, rather than just amassing them,” Henkel told The Telegraph. However, previous research has shown that most people never take the time to look over their digital pictures simply because there are too many of them and they aren’t usually very organized on their computers.
8. The author mentioned Henkel’s trip to the Grand Canyon at the beginning to ______.
A. complain about some tourists’ bad habits B. give suggestions on how to enjoy one’s tour
C. describe the great view of the Grand Canyon D. point out people’s obsession with taking pictures
9. What can we learn about Henkel’s study from the passage?
A. Reviewing pictures always helps people bring back memories.
B. Taking pictures in a museum tour helps students recognize objects better.
C. Pictures that focus on the details of objects are likely to improve people’s memories.
D. People should spend more time studying real objects than taking pictures of them.
10. The underlined word “amassing” in the last paragraph probably means ______.
A. Displaying B. Collecting C. introducing D. remembering
11. What is the article mainly about?
A. Some skills to learn for taking pictures.
B. People’s obsession with taking pictures and its influence.
C. How pictures remind us of our past.
D. How to deal with pictures after taking trips.
D 9. C 10. B 11. B
根据第一段““YEARS ago when I was at the Grand Canyon, I remember someone coming up to the canyon’s edge, taking a shot with their camera and then walking away, like ‘got it-done’, barely even glancing at the magnificent scene sprawling in front of them,” Linda Henkel, a scientist at Fairfield University, US told Live Science.(“多年前我在大峡谷时,记得有人走到峡谷边缘,用相机拍了张照,然后就走开了,那神情仿佛在说‘搞定了’,几乎没多看一眼在眼前铺展开的壮丽景色。” 美国费尔菲尔德大学的科学家琳达・亨克尔在接受《生活科学》采访时这样说道)”以及第二段“Henkel was surprised by how obsessed people are with taking pictures these days (亨克尔对如今人们过度沉迷拍照感到惊讶)”可知,作者开篇提及亨克尔的大峡谷之旅,目的是通过具体场景引出“人们沉迷拍照”这一核心现象。故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段“if students zoomed in to photograph part of an object, their memory actually improved, and those who focused the lens on a specific area could even recall parts that weren’t in the frame (如果学生放大拍摄物体的一部分,他们的记忆力实际上会提高,那些将镜头对准特定区域的学生甚至能回忆起不在取景框内的部分)”可知,聚焦物体细节的拍照方式可能提升记忆力。
D
After a long and busy day at school or work, all we want to do is return to a clean and comfortable home. Smart technology can turn any home into a nicer place to live. You can now turn your thermostat (恒温器) up, lock your doors and play your music with a simple voice command.
In fact, smart homes have actually been around for some time. Scottish company Pico Electronics invented a communication protocol (协议) called X10 back in 1975. With radio waves, this protocol allowed users to communicate with various devices in their homes, such as lights and alarms, according to AVSystemsMag, a magazine dedicated to the AV and automation industry.
Of course, 4G-and now 5G-wireless technology makes smart homes much more sophisticated (复杂的) and powerful than X10 devices. Perhaps the most widespread smart home technology is the voice-activated assistant. Google Home and Amazon’s Alexa allow users to interact with nearly any device in their homes simply by speaking a few words. This is especially convenient for children and people with physical disabilities, as they can accomplish tasks that would normally be too complicated or difficult, according to How To Geek magazine.
Common household appliances can become “smart” as well. For example, a smart trash bin can monitor the things you’ve thrown away and place an online order for replacement items, while smart refrigerators can create dinner recipes based on the ingredients that were kept inside, according to How stuff works website. 5G-powered sensors and cameras can monitor almost every aspect of household life.
The appeal of all of this convenience has paid off for realtors, who are seeing sales of smart homes skyrocket. You can ask Dave Garland, a realtor with Second Century Ventures.
“There’s a new narrative when it comes to what ‘home’ means,” he said in an NPR report. “It means a personalized environment where technology responds to your every need.”
But it’s not just about convenience. Smart homes are also good for the environment. By monitoring your energy use and automatically turning off lights and other devices that you are not using, smart homes can lower how much electricity you use overall. Using less energy means that we use fewer resources such as coal and gas, which is ultimately good for the environment-and our wallets. Well, not everyone is excited about smart home.
12. Where is this passage most probably from?
A. A book report. B. A science magazine. C. A research paper. D. A guidebook.
13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Household devices designed for the disabled. B. All types of smart household appliances.
C. Further development of smart home technology. D. Difference between X10 and 5G network.
14. How does smart home technology influence our life?
A. Smart trash bins help us find cheap but nice things online.
B. Smart fridges can create proper recipes and cook tasty food.
C. Smart homes will help us save energy and reduce pollution.
D. Smart homes make us stay at home instead of working out.
15. The author may introduce the ______ of smart homes in the next paragraph.
A. application B. development C. regulation D. drawback
B 13. C 14. C 15. D

Our school holds an annual book fair each January, where new and used books are available for students to purchase. Our librarian, Mr. Egan, is the school sponsor (主办者) for it. Traditionally, the tenth-grade students are responsible for the planning, set-up, and selling at the fair. I am sure that Mr. Egan consulted our teacher, Ms. Cates, for suggestions as to who would be the student directors, and I was pleasantly surprised when he approached me to be one of the students in charge. I was even more surprised when he told me that the student I would be working with was Charlie and we have known each other since kindergarten but have never been close. Ever since we were partners for the science project last year, there is very little we choose to say to each other. Needless to say, the science project fell short of our expectations. In light of that event, I was shocked that Mr. Egan and Ms. Cates found us a suitable match.
At the meeting with Mr. Egan, we divided the responsibilities between us. I would be in charge of setting up the room and getting the volunteers to work the sale for all three days. Charlie would be in charge of all the books. We were both quite satisfied with our jobs, and even more satisfied that there would be little contact between us.
With only two weeks to plan, I knew I could not waste time. I asked John and Rachel to help me with the set-up and twelve other classmates to work at the fair. I figured that, between Mr. Egan, the friends who volunteered to help, and me, we would be just fine.
Meanwhile, I tried on two separate occasions to start a conversation with Charlie about making the progress but each time his response was, “Everything’s cool”.
On the day of the set-up, my friends and I arrived, only to find Charlie with his head in his hands, surrounded by a million boxes of books. I asked him, Charlie, what’s wrong?
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
He responded in despair, “There are a lot more books here than I expected.”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After the book fair was over, I couldn’t stop wondering why Mr. Egan put us together.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
He responded in despair, “There are a lot more books here than I expected.” My initial impulse was to say, “This is your mess. Figure it out yourself.” But instead I said, “Let me see if I can get some help.” Charlie nodded, appreciating the support. Then, we, together with other helpers, rolled up our sleeves and started sorting them by genre. Hours passed by as we worked side by side. Slowly but surely, the chaos began to transform into a perfect fair, and our avoidance of contact into smooth communication. I was surprised that the book fair was a success and even more surprised that we could actually work well together.
After the book fair was over, I couldn’t stop wondering why Mr. Egan put us together. I approached him, eager to figure out his intention of this unlikely pairing. However, his reply was quite simple, “I knew that this would be a great experience for both of you. It wasn’t so much about running the book fair as it was a lesson in how important it is to communicate and to work alongside others when necessary.” Hearing what he said and thinking of what happened between Charlie and me, I couldn’t help but smile. Sometimes, the most valuable lessons are learned amidst the challenges we face and the people we least expect to be our allies.

C. They took photos and spread the news.

C How pictures remind us of our past.
D. How to deal with pictures after taking trips.

A. application B. development C. regulation D. drawback
