I was born in a small town in Pakistan called Quetta in 1980. When I was a little boy of about ten years old, I developed an interest in calligraphy. Back then we only had a TV channel with limited programs. One of the programs was about learning calligraphy. I was engaged and spent several years learning different calligraphy scripts (笔迹) in the Urdu language.
After graduation, I came to Dubai, UAE, falling in love with the architecture and high-rise buildings. I wanted to shoot the amazing beauty from different angles. So I bought a camera and learned photography, joined photography groups and attended workshops. After a few years, I got bored of photographing landscapes and cityscapes.
Seven years ago, while going through the photography blogs and looking through others’ works, I read the term called “light painting”, a photography technique that allows you to draw in space. I started experimenting with that and soon it hit me: why not bring back my passion for calligraphy using light painting technique? Since that day, I’ve been drawing light calligraphy. To achieve the best results, I decided to build the lights myself. The best part about my work is that they are not photoshopped. I prefer to get the results straight out of the camera. I don’t even turn over the images. To achieve that, I have to write in reverse (倒置) and that took a lot of practice to get it right.
Currently, I’m working on the idea of bringing abandoned places back to life, including buildings which have lost their charm and are hidden in darkness. Through my photography, I try to employ light calligraphy by writing a word that attaches a deep meaning to those places and telling stories behind them. In this way, I hope people will revisit these places and appreciate the real reason for their construction.
4. What can be implied from the author’s experience in Quetta?
A. He had access to plenty art resources. B. He was fond of calligraphy channels.
C. He grasped scripts of many languages. D. He was willing to dig into calligraphy.
5. What made the author interested in taking pictures in Dubai?
A. Visual impacts of structures. B. Remarkable urban planning.
C. Mysterious building stories. D. Odd angles of architecture.
6. How did the author enhance the effects of light calligraphy?
A. By learning from others. B. By sticking to originality.
C. By beautifying his photos. D. By drawing in open space.
7. What is the author's role in practicing his current idea?
A. A calligrapher recording meanings. B. An artist regenerating forgotten sites.
C. A photographer revealing beauty. D. A historian looking for ignored areas.
D 5. A 6. B 7. B

A major reason why plastic bags and yogurt containers aren’t recycled is that it’s much more frugal to make these products from the ground up than to recycle them. However, a new recycling technique promises a cost-effective way to turn these common plastic waste items into high-quality liquid fuels.
What makes plastics useful, namely their strength and resistance to high temperatures, becomes an annoyance when it comes to recycling the materials. The strong carbon-carbon bonds in these plastics requires very high temperatures to break, making the process energy-consuming. Once the bonds break, the smaller molecules (分子) quickly form new bonds, resulting in unwanted chemicals. These byproducts then have to be broken down again, adding time and complexity.
Researchers developed a way to transform these plastics into useful fuels at temperatures below 100℃, without creating any side products. They conduct the chemical reaction in the presence of a new type of catalyst (催化剂) in a special acidic solution. In these reaction conditions, as soon as the carbon bonds in the plastic break apart, new bonds form in a controlled way, giving off the chemicals called alkanes. The alkanes can be used either as a fuel or as raw material for new plastics. The entire reaction takes place in a single reaction container. It takes only three hours and occurs at 70℃. By comparison, existing recycling techniques typically require two stages, take much more time, and need temperatures of over 200°C.
Up to now, this catalyst has been used in some factories. But it will take more research to know whether the technique can be translated to more occasions. If so, such a low-cost method to turn single-use plastics into high-value materials could go a long way in making the plastic economy sustainable.
8. What does the underlined word “frugal” mean in paragraph 1?
A. typical. B. expensive. C. inexpensive. D. reasonable.
9. What can we know about plastics from paragraph 2?
A. They stretch easily and quickly. B. They are productive in poisonous gases.
C. They fail to resist heat perfectly. D. They are stable in chemical properties.
10. What does the new way of recycling plastics feature?
A. Keeping new bonds from forming. B. Controlling acidity of the solution.
C. Stressing cleanliness and speed. D. Extending functions of plastics.
11. What is researchers’ attitude toward the technique’s wide application?
A. Cautious. B. Hopeless. C. Critical. D. Optimistic.

Have you ever been asked a question that you know the answer to, but found yourself incapable of thinking of the correct vocabulary? It’s called the “tip-of-the-tongue” phenomenon or lethologica. When we think of something, the brain selects words to represent these abstract ideas, and we then speak what is on our minds. But because this process is so complex, all kinds of things can go wrong, including the tip-of-the-tongue moments.
This phenomenon can be frustrating. People globally report experiencing moments where certain words seem momentarily inaccessible. In fact, there are quite some factors behind it. While young adults might experience tip-of-the-tongue moments once a week, older adults generally experience these moments almost daily. Additionally, tip-of-the-tongue events are more likely to happen when people are tired. Other features of memory, like how well the information was stored and the presence of disturbing memories, can also have an impact.
Metacognitive (元认知的) explanations for the phenomenon suggest that tip-of-the-tongue states serve as a sort of alarm. Like a warning signal in a car, they can remind us of a potential problem that needs to be addressed. According to such explanations, tip-of-the-tongue moments are not a problem in themselves. Rather, they serve to tell us that there is something going wrong with the retrieval (检索) system and allow us to correct the issue.
The most common solution for the failure to think of the accurate vocabulary is to not think about it, so that the word can suddenly emerge out of nowhere. If tip-of-the-tongue moments happen frequently or are bothersome, it’s important to talk to a care provider such as a physician or mental health professional. They can do testing to determine whether a cognitive issue may exist or if it’s just a matter of having one of these common moments.
12. What happens to people experiencing lethologica?
A. They become slightly absent-minded. B. They make some grammatical errors.
C. They struggle to locate specific words. D. They fail to grasp speakers’ directions.
13. Which group of people has the highest frequency of lethologica?
A. An elder with little education. B. A worker without much sleep.
C. A young lady doing physical labor. D. A senior tired from a long trip.
14. What can be inferred from explanations in Paragraph 3?
A. Lethologica leads to mental disorder. B. The retrieval system is repairable.
C Lethologica shows no negative effects. D. The retrieval system is unreliable.
15. What can be the best title for this passage?
A. When Words Fail: Understanding Lethologica.
B. Aging and Memory: How Brain Function Declines.
C. Metacognition: The Key to Repairing Your Memory.
D. The Dangers of Lethologica: A Guide to Mental Health.
C 13. D 14. B 15. A

根据第一段中的“Have you ever been asked a question that you know the answer to, but found yourself incapable of thinking of the correct vocabulary? It’s called the “tip-of-the-tongue” phenomenon or lethologica. (你是否曾遇到过这样的情况:知道问题的答案,却想不起对应的正确词汇?这被称为“舌尖现象”,即lethologica)”可知,经历lethologica的人会难以找到特定的词汇。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“While young adults might experience tip-of-the-tongue moments once a week, older adults generally experience these moments almost daily. Additionally, tip-of-the-tongue events are more likely to happen when people are tired. (年轻人可能一周经历一次舌尖现象,而老年人通常几乎每天都会经历。此外,人们疲劳时更容易出现舌尖现象)”可知,老年人且处于疲劳状态时,出现lethologica的频率最高。D项“一位因长途旅行而疲惫的老年人”同时符合“老年人”和“疲劳”两个关键条件,频率应最高。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“According to such explanations, tip-of-the-tongue moments are not a problem in themselves. Rather, they serve to tell us that there is something going wrong with the retrieval(检索) system and allow us to correct the issue.
故选A项。

They are responsible for their actions, learn from mistakes, and accept feedback objectively. C选项“Hence, they do not respond by attacking back.
根据后文“Emotionally mature people understand their emotional needs. It is important to take care of others’ feelings but it does not mean they should totally abandon their own feelings. The key is to stay balanced and to attend to own emotional needs when it is necessary. If a person does not respect his own feelings, it is easy for him to be influenced by others and become miserable. (情绪成熟的人了解自己的情感需求。关心他人的感受固然重要,但这并不意味着他们应该完全忽视自己的感受。关键在于保持平衡,并在必要时关注自身的情感需求。如果一个人不尊重自己的感受,就很容易受到他人的影响,进而陷入痛苦之中)”可知,本段核心是“关注并尊重自身的情感需求,而非完全忽略自我”。B选项“Respect your own feelings and needs. (尊重自己的感受和需求。)”为祈使句,精准概括了本段主题,适合作小标题。故选B项。
19题详解】
本段小标题为“Don’t play victim. (不要扮演受害者)”以及后文提到“Whenever they get setbacks in life, they view it as their own responsibility to improve themselves. (无论何时在生活中遇到挫折,他们都认为提升自己是自己的责任。)”可知,进一步说明情绪成熟的人对自身生活的责任意识。G选项“Emotionally mature people take full responsibility for their own lives. (情绪成熟的人对自己的生活负完全责任。)”直接呼应小标题“不扮演受害者”,且为后文“视挫折为自我提升的责任”提供了观点支撑,符合语境。故选G项。
【20题详解】
本段围绕“Define and set boundaries. (明确并设定边界)”展开,前文提到“Emotionally mature people understand their standpoint. They know what they want in life and they also made a conscious decision on the things that they do not want. When things beyond their boundaries happen, they can detect it right away, deal with it accordingly and won’t let it destroy their self-esteem.. (情绪成熟的人清楚自己的立场。他们知道自己在生活中想要什么,也会清醒地决定自己不想要什么。当发生超出自身边界的事情时,他们能立刻察觉,并采取相应的方式处理,不会让这些事损害自己的自尊。)”可知,空处应总结“设定边界”带来的积极作用。D选项“This gives them huge power over emotional control. (这赋予他们强大的情绪控制能力。)”中的“This”指代前文“明确立场、设定并处理边界”的行为,符合语境。故选D项。

Thank you!
Good afternoon, everyone! It’s my great honor to share ideas about smart homes at this salon. Smart homes have truly changed our lives. For example, when we’re on the way back, we can turn on the air conditioner via our phones, so we can enjoy a comfortable temperature as soon as we get home. Smart lights also automatically adjust brightness based on the natural light, saving electricity.
Looking ahead, I hope future smart homes will be even more intelligent. Maybe they can predict our needs—like preparing hot water before we want to take a bath. They could also connect better with medical devices to keep an eye on the elderly’s health. Let’s look forward to a brighter future with smarter homes!
Thank you!

C
A. Cautious. B. Hopeless. C. Critical. D. Optimistic.
D
A They become slightly absent-minded.
C. Lethologica shows no negative effects.
