In life, each of us is on a journey to discover who we truly are. It’s a long journey that starts when we’re young and keeps going as we grow.
For middle school students, this journey has just begun. As for me, it started when I first joined the school art club. When I painted, I realised I loved using colours to express my feelings, and this discovery surprised me. From then on, I began to pay attention to understanding myself.
Firstly, understanding our likes and dislikes can help us find the right goals. It’s like a map that guides us. For example, when faced with different choices, if we know our own preferences (偏爱), the choices we make will be different. And every choice we make brings us one step closer to achieving our goals.
Secondly, understanding ourselves helps us get along better with others. If we know our own strengths and weaknesses (优缺点), we can work better as a team. For example, if I know I’m good at listening, I can help my classmates who need to talk about their problems.
In short, the journey of discovering ourselves is long and full of surprises. It helps us grow into our best selves and live a happy, meaningful life. So, let’s keep exploring and enjoying this journey. I’m sure you’ll find some surprises.

Moo Deng is a baby pygmy hippo (河马). It is similar to a large hippo. But a pygmy hippo is much smaller. Moo Deng lives at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. She was born in July. Her name means “bouncy pork”. Her cheeks are pink. Her belly jiggles as she runs around her pen (圈;栏;棚). She nibbles on people’s knees. She is also an Internet superstar. Every move she makes is closely watched—whether she’s being sprayed with water, being carried by zookeepers, or simply lying on the ground.
Why is Moo Deng so well-loved? Scientists say it is because humans are born to like cute babies, even baby hippos! Many baby animals usually have specific looks. They have big eyes and large foreheads. They have chubby bodies. These things make baby animals look innocent. That makes people want to protect them.
Konrad Lorenz was a zoologist from Austria. He was the first one to think of this idea. He talked about it in 1943. He explained that cuteness makes babies hard to ignore.
This is important for babies. They cannot live on their own. They need adults to look after them. Cuteness touches people’s hearts. When we see a cute baby, we want to cuddle (搂抱) it. We want to take care of it. This is how people feel when they see Moo Deng.
Pygmy hippos are in trouble. People hunt them, and the forests they live in are being cut down. Today, there are only about 2,000 pygmy hippos living in the wild. They might disappear forever. But Moo Deng’s fame might help. People love Moo Deng. Hopefully they will learn to care about all pygmy hippos.

【答案】例文:
Frogs Are Good for Us
We can see frogs everywhere in summer. Though they don’t look nice, they are good for us.
Frogs are interesting animals. They can live not only on land but also in water. The smallest frogs are about the size of a pea, while the larger ones can grow as big as a human hand.
What do they eat? They usually eat insects which are bad for plants. For this reason, we believe that frogs help to protect plants, especially crops that we live on. How great they are!
However, to our disappointment, the number of frogs is becoming fewer and fewer. They need our help. Let’s love them and do something together to save as many frogs as possible!
