With over 40 years of experience, he taps the overgrown ground with a wooden stick, warning wild animals for safety. He lives in Shixia village near the 8.6-kilometer part. Shixia villagers have a deep love for the wall. Mei remembers when he ran and played hide-and-seek with his friends on the large building as a child. However in 1979, when he returned to Shixia after working outside for years, he was shocked by the terrible situation of the old wall. “Some villagers even took stones from it to build their houses,” Mei says. To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter. In 1984, a Great Wall protection program started, with Mei’s effort encouraging many, and it was quickly picked up by villagers in Shixia. Realizing the importance of protection, more and more of them returned the stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection organisation, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. His niece, Liu Hongyan, encouraged by him, also became a guardian in 2019. “When I was a child, my uncle always told me his patrol stories and talked about the history of the Great Wall,” Liu says. “It is my duty and responsibility to protect the Great Wall.” Mei’s hard work has made a difference. From 2015 to 2023, 289 protection projects were allowed and thousands of guardians joined. Even though there is progress, the Shixiaguan part still remains closed to the public. “My biggest wish,” Mei says, “is to see the Great Wall well-protected and open for all to visit, encouraging more people to join us in protecting it.” 4. What made Mei Jingtian decide to protect the Great Wall? A. The dream of being a hero. B. The influence of his friends. C. Poor condition of the Great Wall. D. Encouragement from the villagers. 5. What do the underlined words “picked up” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Recognised. B. Finished. C. Managed. D. Developed. 6. Which of the following best describes Mei Jingtian? A. Careful and confident. B. Kind-hearted and humorous. C. Creative and curious. D. Responsible and strong-willed. 7 What does the text mainly talk about? A. A lifelong guardian of the Great Wall. B. Villagers’ deep love for the Great Wall. C. The progress in protecting the Great Wall. D. A practical Great Wall protection program. C 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第二段中“However in 1979, when he returned to Shixia after working outside for years, he was shocked by the terrible situation of the old wall. “Some villagers even took stones from it to build their houses,” Mei says. To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter. (然而,1979年,当他在外面工作多年后回到石峡时,他被老城墙的可怕状况震惊了。梅说:“一些村民甚至用石头盖房子。”为了保护这一奇迹,梅自愿成为一名守护者,每天巡逻20公里,防止人们拿石头、在墙上写字或乱扔垃圾)”可知,残破的长城使梅景田决定保护长城。故选C项。 【5题详解】 词句猜测题。根据画线部分的下文“Realizing the importance of protection, more and more of them returned the stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. (意识到保护的重要性,越来越多的人归还了他们带走的石头,加入了梅的巡逻)”可知,当地村民意识到要保护长城,开始着手进行保护计划。由此可知,长城保护计划得到了这里的村民的认可,画线部分意思应该与Recognised“认可,承认”一致。故选A项。 根据第一段中“Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. (即使在80岁的时候,梅景田仍然在石峡关长城巡逻)”、第二段中“To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter. (为了保护这一奇迹,梅自愿成为一名守护者,每天巡逻20公里,防止人们拿石头、在墙上写字或乱扔垃圾)”和第三段中“In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection organisation, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. (2006年,作为村长,梅成立了一个志愿者保护组织,100名村民中约有80人作为守护人加入)”可知,梅景田志愿做长城的守护者,每天巡逻,防止长城被破坏,成立志愿者保护组织,80岁还在坚守这一使命。这些展现了他的责任感和坚强意志。故选D项。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. (即使在80岁的时候,梅景田仍然在石峡关长城巡逻)”可知,文章围绕梅景田毕生致力于保护长城的事迹展开,他最初决定志愿成为长城守护者,后来他努力组织和鼓励他人加入保护长城的行列,即文章主要是关于长城的终身守护者。故选A项。 C Danelien van Aalst at the University of Groningen and her co-workers have done research on how relative age (相对年龄) affects popularity among 14 to 15-year-olds. Researchers surveyed more than 13,000 teenagers in England, Sweden and the Netherlands on who they thought was the most popular in their class. Then the researchers gave each student in their classroom a popularity score linked to their birth month as well as their age position in their class. They discovered this: the older the student was, the more likely he or she was to be considered popular. “A child enters school before or after a certain cut-off date and that determines how old or young you are relative to your year group,” says van Aalst. “We found that if you’re born right after the cut-off date, which makes you one of the oldest members of your class, you’re going to be popular.” They found that the same effect also applied at the year-group level. Here, it was the children who were the oldest relative to all of their peers in the year group-rather than just those in their own class-that were the most popular. All three countries showed roughly the same pattern (模式). However, at the classroom level, it was in the Netherlands that the pattern was the strongest. This is partly because the country has a system of grade retention - when students don’t meet their academic requirements, their teachers will hold them back a year, which means they then become the oldest in their class and often the most popular. This relative age effect has also been shown in other areas. “Relative age has earlier been proved to affect school performance-relatively older children do better in school,” says Herman van de Werfhorst at the University of Amsterdam. Similarly, previous research has shown that older children tend to be better at sports than younger students in the same year group. 8. How did the researchers know who the popular students were? A. By recording students’ performance. B. By studying earlier research results. C. By collecting answers from students. D. By comparing the ages of students. 9. What does the underlined word “that” refer to in paragraph 3? A. Popularity. B. Relative age. C. The survey data. D. The cut-off date. 10. What might happen to students held back a year in Netherlands? A. Their teachers would be happy to have them in the class. B. It would be difficult for them to pass the exams in Netherlands. C. They might gain more popularity than others in the same year group. D. They might be the most popular among the peers of the three countries. 11. What does the passage mainly tell us? A. The older a child gets, the wiser he or she will be. B. Many students want to be held back to be popular. C. Older children are likely to perform better in school. D. Older children are often more popular than their younger peers. C 9. D 10. C 11. 根据第二段“Researchers surveyed more than 13,000 teenagers in England, Sweden and the Netherlands on who they thought was the most popular in their class. Then the researchers gave each student in their classroom a popularity score linked to their birth month as well as their age position in their class. (研究人员对英国、瑞典和荷兰的1.3万多名青少年进行了调查,询问他们认为谁是班上最受欢迎的人。然后,研究人员给他们班上的每个学生一个受欢迎程度的分数,这个分数与他们的出生月份以及他们在班上的年龄位置有关)”可知,研究人员通过收集学生的答案来知道谁是受欢迎的学生。故选C项。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据上文“A child enters school before or after a certain cut-off date (一个孩子在某个截止日期之前或之后入学)”可知,that为代词,代指前文提到的事物,此处应是代指“cut-off date”。 根据倒数第二段“This is partly because the country has a system of grade retention - when students don’t meet their academic requirements, their teachers will hold them back a year, which means they then become the oldest in their class and often the most popular. (这在一定程度上是因为这个国家的成绩保留制度——当学生没有达到学业要求时,他们的老师会让他们留级一年,这意味着他们成为班里年龄最大的,而且往往是最受欢迎的)”可知,在荷兰滞留一年的学生他们成为班里年龄最大的,可能会比同一年的其他人更受欢迎。故选C项。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Danelien van Aalst at the University of Groningen and her co-workers have done research on how relative age (相对年龄) affects popularity among 14 to 15-year-olds. (格罗宁根大学的Danelien van Aalst和她的同事们对相对年龄如何影响14至15岁青少年的受欢迎程度进行了研究)”以及第二段“They discovered this: the older the student was, the more likely he or she was to be considered popular.(他们发现:学生年龄越大,他或她越可能被认为是受欢迎的)”可知,本文主要讲述了荷兰罗宁根大学的Danelien van Aalst和她的同事调查发现年龄越大的学生越有可能被认为是受欢迎的,所以D项“Older children are often more popular than their younger peers. (年龄较大的孩子通常比年幼的孩子更受欢迎)”是本文大意。故选D项。 D Workplaces once had both official and unofficial uniforms. In traditional offices, those at the top of the pyramid would always be found in a suit; dressing for the job you wanted meant following this style. The rise of the tech world changed this stereotype Picture Silicon Valley’s most successful leaders, and the clothes that come to mind are jeans, hoodies and black turtlenecks. In the tech world, success has a different kind of uniform one much more casual (随意的) than the suits of the past. This trend towards informality has spread to other fields. Then in 2020 the widespread turn to “work from home” upended work dress codes (着装标准) altogether. During the pandemic, people mostly saw co-workers from the shoulders up on video calls-if they saw them at all. From home, people could easily perform a major role in a meeting in a collared shirt, sweatpants and slippers (拖鞋). If cameras were off, they could even be in pajamas (睡衣), working under a blanket. Now, as workers come back into offices, few companies are asking a return to formal wear. So, what does this mean for dressing for success? With so many different dress codes across companies, is it still possible to 'dress for the job you want’? It is no easy to dress for success. Getting the balance wrong by overdressing can send a negative message. About 79% of workplaces in the US now have a casual dress code. Turning up in a suit to show their desire for success could actually have a bad influence on others’ views on you. The effect of your dressing style depends on who you are. For example, wearing jeans, your boss may seem easy-going while you seemingly careless. Still, dressing can help position you for success-and the key to getting it right is careful observation. The proper dressing might look very different in different workplaces. So understanding the unspoken rules of the dress code could give you an advantage. 12. Which might be the uniform of success in the tech world? A. Slippers. B. Pajamas. C. A formal suit. D. Casual jeans. 13. Which has the closet meaning to the underlined word “upended” in paragraph 3? A. Improve. B. Change. C. Require. D. Challenge. 14. What do we know about dress codes? A. Different companies have different dress codes. B. The trend of dress codes would return to formal wear. C. People follow the same dress code to achieve success. D. Dress codes are clearly written and understood by people. 15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A. Dress as you like. B. Let's dress like a boss. C. Ready for the new dressing style? D. Does “dressing for success” still matter? D 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第二段“The rise of the tech world changed this stereotype (刻板印象). Picture Silicon Valley’s most successful leaders, and the clothes that come to mind are jeans, hoodies and black turtlenecks.(科技世界的兴起改变了这种刻板印象。想象一下硅谷最成功的领导人,脑海中浮现的衣服是牛仔裤、连帽衫和黑色高领毛衣)”可知,在科技界,牛仔裤是成功的制服。故选D项。 【13题详解】 词句猜测题。根据后文“During the pandemic, people mostly saw co-workers from the shoulders up on video calls-if they saw them at all. From home, people could easily perform a major role in a meeting in a collared shirt, sweatpants and slippers (拖鞋). If cameras were off, they could even be in pajamas (睡衣), working under a blanket.(在疫情期间,人们在视频通话中大多是从肩膀以上看到同事——如果他们能看到他们的话。在家里,人们可以穿着有领衬衫、运动裤和拖鞋,轻松地在会议中扮演重要角色。如果没有摄像头,他们甚至可以穿着睡衣,盖着毯子工作)”可知,因为疫情,人们在家工作,制服变得休闲,所以推知upended应是“改变”之意,和B项Change意思相近。故选B项。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“With so many different dress codes across companies, is it still possible to 'dress for the job you want’?(不同的公司有如此多不同的着装要求,是否还有可能“为你想要的工作而着装”?)” 故选A项。 根据第一段“Workplaces once had both official and unofficial uniforms. In traditional offices, those at the top of the pyramid would always be found in a suit; dressing for the job you wanted meant following this style.(Workplaces once had both official and unofficial uniforms. In traditional offices, those at the top of the pyramid would always be found in a suit; dressing for the job you wanted meant following this style.(工作场所曾经有官方和非官方制服。在传统的办公室里,金字塔顶端的人总是穿着西装;为你想要的工作着装意味着要遵循这种风格)”以及最后一段“The effect of your dressing style depends on who you are. For example, wearing jeans, your boss may seem easy-going while you seemingly careless. Still, dressing can help position you for success-and the key to getting it right is careful observation. The proper dressing might look very different in different workplaces. So understanding the unspoken rules of the dress code could give you an advantage.(你的穿衣风格的效果取决于你是谁。 所以D项“Does “dressing for success” still matter?(“成功的着装”仍有关系吗?)” Maybe one day, scientists will invent a way for us to download dictionaries straight into our brains. Until then: here are three vocabulary-building tips for those learning English. ___16___: very important point of leaning words is to learn in context(语境)! ___17___ For example, when taking journeys by train or bus, many native English speakers, in practice, use the verb “to catch”. It is common to hear sentences like this one: I catch the bus at 7:30 every weekday. If you learned the verb “to catch” as a single word, you might describe it as “to receive and hold”. This definition (定义) is correct! But learning this and nothing else would make a such common sentence sound strange to you. Look up new words. If you keep hearing a word and aren’t sure what it means, try to look it up as soon as you can. We asked an expert, Bob the Canadian: what is the best way to look up new words? Bob said, “___18___ My second choice would be to use an English-to-your-native-language dictionary.” According to Bob, “Your native language can be your enemy when learning a new language. ___19___ Keep a notebook handy. Every time you are exposed to English you will come across new words that you don’t understand. Each time you notice a new word, it’s a great opportunity! ___20___ This is an effective study method because each one of your notebook words has something to do with your own memory, giving you a more significant reason to remember them. A. Try learning example sentences. B. Don’t take dictionary meaning seriously. C. Sometimes words are used completely differently in practice. D. My preferred way is to look up the word in an English dictionary. E. So sometimes if you can keep it at a distance, you will learn faster. F. Perhaps you think putting something down on paper takes much time. G. Get a notebook and write down each new word that you think is interesting. 【答案】16. A 17. C 18. D 19. E 20. G 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了学习一门新语言的方法。 【16题详解】 根据下文“very important point of leaning words is to learn in context(语境)! (学习单词非常重要的一点是在上下文中学习)”可知,此处说的是在语境中学习,与A项“Try learning example sentences.(尝试学习例句)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选A项。 【17题详解】 根据下文“For example, when taking journeys by train or bus, many native English speakers, in practice, use the verb “to catch”.(例如,当乘火车或公共汽车旅行时,许多以英语为母语的人实际上使用动词“to catch”)”可知,此处说的是书面语言和实际上使用的有时会不一样,与C项“Sometimes words are used completely differently in practice.(有时,单词在实践中的用法完全不同。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选C项。 【18题详解】 根据上文“Look up new words. If you keep hearing a word and aren’t sure what it means, try to look it up as soon as you can. (查找新单词。如果你一直听到一个单词,但不确定它的意思,请尽快查找。)”可知,此处说的是听到了不会的单词要尽快查找。与D项“My preferred way is to look up the word in an English dictionary.(我最喜欢的方法是在英语字典里查这个词。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选D项。 【19题详解】 根据上文“According to Bob, “Your native language can be your enemy when learning a new language. (根据鲍勃的说法,“学习一门新语言时,你的母语可能会成为你的敌人。”)”可知,此处说的是学习新的语言时,你的母语可能会阻碍你。与E项“So sometimes if you can keep it at a distance, you will learn faster.(所以有时候如果你能保持距离,你会学得更快。)”与上下文一致,符合文意,故选E项。 【20题详解】 根据上文“Keep a notebook handy. Every time you are exposed to English you will come across new words that you don’t understand. Each time you notice a new word, it’s a great opportunity! (随身携带笔记本。每次接触英语,你都会遇到你不懂的新词。每次你注意到一个新单词,都是一个绝佳的机会!)”可知,此处说的是拿一本笔记本,这样你就可以记下你不会的单词。与G项“Get a notebook and write down each new word that you think is interesting. (拿一个笔记本,记下你觉得有趣的每个生词。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选G项。 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 I had this girl in my class and I always considered her to be really foolish. Only five more minutes before school let out. “On Friday,” said Mrs. Griswell, “be prepared to share your favorite hobby with the class. And please bring samples (样品) to show everyone!” Chris sighed. “No way am I going to talk about my favorite hobby,” he thought. His older brother, Wes, laughed at him about it enough. A boy loving clothes and accessories (饰品) designing? Crazy. After school, Chris’s friend Nick sat next to him on the bus. “So what’re you going to do for that hobby thing?” “Uh, I guess I can show my baseball cards,” Chris mumbled (嘟哝). No one except his family knew about his real hobby. “Cool,” said Nick. “I’ll bring in some of my movie posters.” Later at home, Chris pulled out his boxes of baseball cards. He liked baseball — even played some. But that was not what he liked most. Looking through his cards, Chris began choosing some of the best ones. Yet he didn’t feel right about what he had decided. Tuesday passed. Chris gathered his baseball supplies and put them in a grocery bag marked “My Favorite Hobby.” He was ready for Friday, but he still felt something was wrong. He walked out of his room, leaving the sketchbook (画画本) on his desk. Wednesday. After school Chris sat at the kitchen table with a sandwich and a glass of milk, but he wasn’t hungry. “What’s up?” Chris’s brother Wes asked, bursting through the door from soccer practice. “Nothing,” Chris muttered (嘀咕). Chris wanted to be true to himself, but he wasn’t brave enough to face the misunderstanding and laughter. However, Grandma, who was a fashion designer once proudly told him he had talent, admiring his work. And he felt really good about that. “Just be yourself, my boy.” Grandma’s words rang in his ears. On Thursday night, looking at the grocery bag, he finally made a decision. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It was Friday morning and soon came Chris’s turn. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 On Thursday night, looking at the grocery bag, he finally made a decision. Chris emptied the bag of all its contents and started filling it with his sketchbook and some of his designs. He did not care what others thought anymore. It was time to embrace his individuality and show the world his creativity. “I am going to be myself,” Chris said, smiling. It was Friday morning and soon came Chris’s turn. He walked up to the front of the classroom, carrying his grocery bag. Still, he started. “I...I’m a fashion designer.” Yep! There they were — the giggles. He continued to bring out his sketchbook and showed his designs for jackets, pants and shirts. Then Chris pulled a cap from his bag and put it on and the class became quiet. “This is one of my designs.” “I love it!” exclaimed a girl. Then the whole class exploded with excitement. Chris grinned. B Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. A. Villagers’ deep love for the Great Wall. C. The progress in protecting the Great Wall. D. A practical Great Wall protection program. C Danelien van Aalst at the University of Groningen and her co-workers have done research on how relative age (相对年龄) affects popularity among 14 to 15-year-olds. B Many students want to be held back to be popular. C. Older children are likely to perform better in school. D. Older children are often more popular than their younger peers. D Workplaces once had both official and unofficial uniforms. In traditional offices, those at the top of the pyramid would always be found in a suit; dressing for the job you wanted meant following this style. The rise of the tech world changed this stereotype (刻板印象). Picture Silicon Valley’s most successful leaders, and the clothes that come to mind are jeans, hoodies and black turtlenecks. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Maybe one day, scientists will invent a way for us to download dictionaries straight into our brains. Until then: here are three vocabulary-building tips for those learning English. ___16___: very important point of leaning words is to learn in context(语境)! ___17___ For example when taking journeys by train or bus, many native English speakers, in practice, use the verb “to catch”. It is common to hear sentences like this one: I catch the bus at 7:30 every weekday. If you learned the verb “to catch” as a single word, you might describe it as “to receive and hold”.
