Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Dishonesty often helps them manage to live in nature.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. A bird called the plover sometimes pretends (假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When an enemy gets close to its nest, the plover pretends to have a broken wing. The enemy follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries (埋) its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays also steal food. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when others are watching them. So they get back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimpanzee will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimpanzee puts out its hand, too, the chimpanzees are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimpanzee take the winner’s hand and start fighting again. When chimpanzees find food, they will cry out. Then other chimpanzees come running. But some clever chimpanzees learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimpanzees don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share the food.
26. Why does the plover pretend to be hurt?
A. To catch the enemy. B. To show its helplessness.
C. To save its young. D. To leave the babies.
27. When others are watching them, the scrub jay will ________.
A. watch the food all the time B. stop burying the food
C. fly away immediately D. bury the food twice
28. Which picture can we find a sneaky animal?
A. B. C. D.
29. Why do many animals behave dishonestly?
A. Because they want to have fun. B. Because they need to do that for living on.
C. Because they want to share food with others. D. Because they often fight with their enemies.
30. What can the best title for the passage?
A. How do animals protect lives? B. Does Mother Nature agree?
C. Do animals tell a lie? D. Honesty or dishonesty?
【答案】26. C 27. D 28. B 29. B 30. C

That way, other chimpanzees don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share the food.”

根据下文B的回答“I have been like this since yesterday afternoon.”可知,B回答了“这样的状况持续多久了”,因此上文A的提问应是询问持续时间,用“How long”引导,时态为现在完成时,故填How long have you been like this。

A To catch the enemy. B. To show its helplessness.
C. To save its young. D. To leave the babies.
27. When others are watching them, the scrub jay will ________.

C. fly away immediately D. bury the food twice
28. Which picture can we find a sneaky animal?

29. Why do many animals behave dishonestly?

C. Because they want to share food with others. D. Because they often fight with their enemies.
30. What can the best title for the passage?
A. How do animals protect lives? B. Does Mother Nature agree?
C Do animals tell a lie? D. Honesty or dishonesty?
