Among the many poets in history, who is called the “immortal poet
(诗仙)”? Yes, he is Li Bai. Many people think his poems are romantic
(浪漫的) and free, just like an immortal. However, in the Chinese cartoon
movie Chang’an(《长安三万里》) we see a different Li Bai.
In the movie, Li drinks a lot. He likes to have parties. Sometimes he
doesn’t keep promises to his friend Gao Shi. He also goes after money. Li
dreams to become an officer(官员), but he can’t take keju(科举) because

his family run a business. Businessmen couldn’t become officers at that time. So
he tries to get to know the important people in Chang’an. But he makes a
mistake and leaves Chang’an in the end.
Xie Junwei, the movie’s director said, “Li Bai is not all good but that is
more real.” Li Bai might not be as perfect as we think, but his poems are here
with us. His poems gives us inspiration and confidence, especially when we are
in hard times. He is always the “immortal” in our hearts.

You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and
Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine Jia and Lin singing operas in English instead of
speaking poetic (有诗意的) Chinese?
Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel The Story of
the Stone (《红楼梦》), written by Cao Xueqin (1715-1763). Now the
book has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in
San Francisco, US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan
in 2017.

Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and
American cultures, including the director and playwrights. Their understanding of
both cultures helped them change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign
people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings. He compared
Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin showed up on stage,
there was usually water around her on the stage.
The creators considered it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese
classic to Western audiences. Hwang told China Daily he was happy to “have
made a contribution to the land where my parents were born. ”
