I . 阅读理解。
Our memories are important in shaping our sense of self. we first have a sense of self early in life , perhaps as young as18 months. Throughout childhood and puberty ,we start to develop a set of views about our identity , including our appearances, personalities, and so on. These views shape our life stories, which gradually become a part of our sense of self.
Of all our memories, the most important are the “ self-defining memories” . They are remembered most clearly ,and they are the ones that help us build our overall sense of self. By recognizing our self-defining memories, we can have a deeper understanding to ourselves. But how can we recognize them? The easiest way is to think about the events in your life. However ,as we get older and experience more events, self-defining memories are always changing.
返回目录
Interestingly ,older adults always find ways to change memories of troubling events into positive stories. In this way ,they can make peace with their past adversities. However , for younger adults, troubling events may cause them to experience more pain when they think of them. As scientists have discovered , your happiness comes from what you think about the events, not the events themselves.
Discovering your self-defining memories is an important step in dealing with your life experiences. By thinking about past events, your identity can continue to grow and improve how you see yourself.
【主旨大意】本文主要讲述的是自我定义记忆的重要 性及其对个人自我认知的影响。

How to improve your self-control
“ It doesn , t always feel like it ,but we all have willpower ,”says scientist Erie schulze. He explains that it ,s like a muscle (肌肉) because the more you use it , the stronger it becomes. The best way to strengthen self-control is getting plenty of sleep and feeding your brain with healthy food. Try focusing on small goals so you don ,t use up all your energy in one go.“ As the day goes on , that willpower muscle becomes smaller and it , s harder to resist temptation (拒绝诱惑) ,”schulze says. when this happens he suggests exercising as this helps you reduce stress and gives energy to the brain.
