Teachers say the digital (数字的) age has had a good and a not-so-good influence (影响) on the American teenagers. More than 2,000 high school teachers took an online survey.
40 percent of the teachers said the Internet and digital search tools have had a “mostly good” use for their students’ research habits and skills. But 35 percent agreed that these technologies “make the students not have enough attention.” And 25 percent said the technologies “do little to help them in courses.”
Judy Buchanan is a director of the National Writing Project. Ms. Buchanan says digital research tools are helping students learn more, and learn faster. Teachers really like these tools, because they are ways to make some of learning exciting. Young people enjoy using these tools. And the goal is to help them become creative students of meaningful work, and not just that kind of copyright.
But one problem the survey found is that many students don’t have a good understanding of how to use the digital knowledge well. In other words, they trust too much of the information. Judy Buchanan says these students have not developed the skills they need to tell whether the online information is good or bad.
Another problem the survey found is something that might not seem like a problem at all: being able to quickly find information online. Teachers say the capacity of their students to work hard to find answers is becoming weaker. They say students depend too much on search engines (引擎) and do not make enough use of printed books or research librarians.
Besides, many teachers are also worried about the problem that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others, instead of using their own abilities.

Zhao Shengliang, the head of the Dunhuang Research Center, gave a talk at Shenzhen Book City CBD Store on December 1, 2024. The talk was about how digital technology (数字技术) can help protect traditional culture.
“Dunhuang connects the Eastern and Western cultures,” Zhao said, “It shows how different cultures exchange ideas. Making the relics (文物) digital is very important because it can keep the old things from Dunhuang safe for always.”
Zhao showed how digital technology is used in Dunhuang’s art projects. For example, in the Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟) Digital Tour Center, tourists can explore the Mogao Grottoes through virtual (虚拟的) tours, where tourists can “travel back” to the caves in ancient times.
According to Zhao, working with Huawei has made the visitor experience at Dunhuang much better. They have brought in an AR map. This map can provide AI-guided tours as well as interesting activities like taking pictures with a virtual (虚拟的) deer.

Livestreaming (直播) is very popular these days, but have you watched livestreaming shows given by virtual hosts (虚拟主播)? They look like real people, but in fact, they’re just digital characters created by AI companies.
Xmov is such an AI company in China. Set up in 2018, it has created lots of great digital humans. People talked about the company when it presented its latest high-technology products to more than 300 guests at a launch event in Shanghai last year.
The company is the first in China to create the virtual social media star named Ling, who is always seen in a traditional Chinese costume. In August 2023, the company also used a 3D AI host to show their new products to more than 300 guests at an event, which caused a heated discussion among people.
Now, many companies are using virtual hosts to sell their products through livestreaming. For one thing, it costs much less than building a traditional livestreaming room and team. For another, virtual hosts can work 24 hours a day. And tests have shown that they can do the job as well as human workers.
Virtual characters are expected to be used in more industries. In the near future, we may see them act as teachers, salespeople, guides and so on. It will not only reshapes (重塑) many industries, but also allow human workers to put more energy into creative work instead of doing ______ tasks.

What do you think of a “talking kitchen”? A French Digital Kitchen has been developed at Newcastle University in the UK. It teaches students how to cook French food and speak French at the same time. For the first time, students can learn a language by following cooking steps.
All grammar and vocabulary have been carefully chosen to make sure the users have a good understanding of French. After learning for some time, the users can test themselves by doing a short test on the computer.
The kitchen project was started by Professor Paul Seedhouse. He became interested in the idea after he visited another kind of talking kitchen. He said, “The purpose of the French Digital Kitchen is to make learning a language more interesting and more educational.”
How does the kitchen work? There is a computer in the kitchen. With this computer, the users can first choose a French recipe that they want to follow. The computer then starts to guide the users how to make a French dish. If you follow the instructions on the computer, it moves on to the next. If you go wrong, the program goes back and repeats the recipe or instructions. At any time, the users can also ask the kitchen to repeat the recipe or any step.
The new kitchen can be used in schools, universities and even people’s homes. The researchers will also be developing the European Digital Kitchen, for the next three years.

Life for the old is changing quickly because of technology. While some find joy in these changes, others face difficulties.
Many seniors are discovering fun ways to use technology. Free online classes let them learn painting, gardening, or even how to use smartphones. For example, 72-year-old Grandma Zhang recently learned to make digital (数字的) birthday cards for her grandchildren. Video apps like WeChat help families stay connected. “I see my grandson’s face every day though he studies abroad,” said Mr. Li, 68, with a smile. Smartwatches are also popular—they check heart rates and remind users to take medicine. Some hospitals even let patients talk to doctors online, saving time for those who have trouble walking.
However, not everything is easy. About 40% of people over 65 say technology changes too fast. Many have a hard time with small phone text, forget passwords, or worry about online tricks. “I once lost 500 yuan on my phone. Now I’m scared to use my phone,” shared Auntie Wang.
To help, communities are taking action. Young volunteers teach seniors how to use phones safely every weekend. In Beijing, a 16-year-old boy named Xiaoming became a “tech-teacher” for his neighbors. “Mr. Chen learned to send emojis (表情)! He sends me a thumbs-up after each lesson,” Xiaoming said proudly. The government also opened special “tech-cafes” with large-screen computers and friendly guides.
As 5G networks reach more places, even villages are joining the digital age. The key is to make technology kind to people of all ages. After all, today’s young “phone experts” will one day be seniors (较年长者) too. By working together, every age can enjoy the benefits of a connected world. Digital life not only brings us joy but also prepares us for future jobs. Many jobs today require computer and internet skills. So, let’s enjoy digital life wisely, stay safe, and keep a balance. This way, we can make the most of it and be ready for the future.

AI Brings Textbook Characters to Life: A New Chapter in Learning
Imagine opening your history textbook and seeing Confucius, Leonardo da Vinci, or Marie Curie step out of the pages to talk to you! Thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), this dream is becoming reality in classrooms around the world.
In Wuhan Gangcheng No. 4 Middle School, students ask questions to a 3D-animated Confucius (孔子). One student once asked, “Does ‘ren’ (kindness) still matter in a world full of competition?” The digital Confucius smiled and explained how kindness helps people live together peacefully. This isn’t magic—it’s AI! Using tools like Jimeng (即梦AI) and Keling (可灵AI), teachers can turn flat textbook pictures into lively characters. These AI tools add details to old paintings, make the characters move, and even let them speak. For example, Aristotle can now explain logic with hand gestures, and Li Qingzhao (李清照) can recite her poems with gentle expressions.
AI isn’t just fun, it’s changing how we study. In Nanjing’s Stone Shadow Art Museum, AI turns ancient Chinese paintings into modern art styles. When visitors use a special flashlight, ink-and-wash mountains become colorful impressionist scenes. This mix of old and new helps us understand culture better. In classrooms, AI helps students learn at their own pace. A smart system can give students different learning materials based on their questions. An AI wrong-answer notebook (“AI 错题本”) finds mistakes and makes practice plans. In a history class about the Maya civilization (玛雅文明), students explore how climate change affected cities through AI-made videos. “History isn’t just dates anymore,” says student Wu Boyu. “It’s like touching the past.”
However, there are problems. Some people use AI to change history characters in bad ways. We need rules to stop this. Also, while AI helps us learn, teachers remind us not to forget the human side of learning—like sharing ideas face-to-face. Looking ahead, AI will do more. Students might use AI to understand art or create digital exhibitions. As one teacher says, “Technology isn’t the goal. It’s a way to help every student shine.”
From old books to smart screens, learning is always evolving. With AI, textbook characters aren’t just words anymore—they’re friends who guide us through the amazing journey of knowledge.

There are some machines on the car. They can make the car follow the rules of the road and keep a safe space from other cars. This would make the road safer. You can even take a short rest when the car drives itself. In the future, self-driving cars would be used by many people.
Digital Money (数字货币)
Now we can use Wechat Pay or Alipay to shop. That means we are already using digital money. People only need to take a phone wherever they go. Using these ways is much easier than looking for money in our pockets. However, some people don’t like using it. They think it is not safe enough. In fact, it is not true at all. ▲ .
Virtual friends (虚拟朋友)
Virtual friends can be a life-size copy of your best friend. It will be possible to talk to a life-sized hologram (全息图) of friends. A projector (投影仪) will create a picture of your friend sitting next to you. It will be just like they are there, except you can’t have a touch on them.

As they use digital technology too much, they are losing their ability to do simple things. They can’t make toys themselves with hands or help Mum cook dinner. And worst of all, they seem to be losing interest in communicating with others.
“I have talked with a number of teachers. They care about the increasing numbers of young pupils who can play with computers or smartphones, but have few or no skills to make things.” said a teacher. “Many pupils can’t communicate with other pupils but their parents talk proudly of their ability to use a computer or a smartphone.”

On Chinese social media network Wechat a common comment on the disaster is: “What a pity that we cannot see the damaged parts of the wonder anymore.”
But the good news is that there is at least one way of seeing them, namely via a video game called Assassin’s Creed: Unity. In this game, the player can travel to one city after another and enter the buildings exactly like what they are in reality, and see Notre Dame as it was before the fire. Further, with virtual reality technology, which is already quite nature, one can even look around the undamaged Notre Dame as if it is still there. Maybe digital technology could help to better protect architectural cultural heritage.
The idea of digitizing ancient buildings, making digital models of them so their data can be saved, dates back to the 1990s and the necessary technology has continued to advance since then. By scanning the ancient buildings with lasers, building 3D models with multiple images, as well as measuring everything precisely, engineers can make a copy as accurate as the real one.
As computers and smartphones are hugely popular, the digital replica (复制品) has great use value. First, it allows tourists to feel the cultural relics without touching them, which helps protect them. The virtual tour of Dunhuang Grottoes in Gansu Province is a good example of this as tourists can view the paintings without standing near them. Furthermore, it can make the digitized cultural relics more famous by spreading awareness about them via the Internet. In 2000, a virtual tour of the Great Wall became very popular at the Hannover World Expo, which increased the number of foreign tourists visiting the site in the following years. Above all, it preserves all the information of the cultural relics. Even if the original ones are damaged one day, people can still know what they were like and can build a replica if desired.
Of course, however precise a model is, it is not the original. Time is the biggest threat to a country’s architectural heritage, which will always become ruins with the passing of the time. Maybe we will have better technologies in the future, but the digital technology offers a practical way to preserve architectural heritage at the moment.

You might think math and art are very different. However, they have many surprising relations. Understanding these links can help students learn better by mixing different subjects.
First, let’s talk about the golden ratio (比例), a special number in math. It’s about 1.618 and appears in many artworks. For example, artists use it to create balanced and beautiful paintings. Take Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa as an example. The way Mona Lisa is placed in the picture follows the golden ratio. When you learn about this ratio in math class and then see it in art, you understand both subjects more deeply.
Geometry (几何学), another area of math, is also important in art. Shapes and angles help artists draw things that look real. In Leonardo da Vinci’s drawing Vitruvian Man, circles and squares show how math can measure (测量) the human body. By studying geometry in art, students learn to notice shapes more carefully. Besides, modern buildings also use geometric shapes creatively, like the spiral (螺旋形) design of the Guggenheim Museum.
* Scientists use numbers to describe different colors. The RGB color model uses numbers for red, green, and blue. Artists use this to mix the right colors for their paintings. When students learn about color models in science and apply them in art, they become more creative. They can even use simple rules to pick colors for digital art, connecting technology, math, and art.
Studying math and art together not only improves their skills in both subjects but also helps them to think in new ways. Next time you draw a picture or solve a math problem, remember: math and art are like two sides of one coin.

A.However, artists never use math in choosing colors.
B.Math even plays a role in the world of colors.
C.Students should learn more about colors in art class.
D.Scientists and artists always work together.
4.What does the underlined word “apply” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Use. B.Change. C.Forget. D.Teach.
5.Which would be the best theme (主题) picture of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

1.What tools do teachers use to make textbook pictures lively?

The Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院) fire has been put out, but its spire and a large portion of its wooden roof have been damaged. The terrible destruction causes a sudden sharp pain to people around the world.
1.What can we see about Notre Dame in the game?
A.The damaged parts. B.The big fire. C.Its wooden shape. D.Its original look.

1.According to the passage, what can the golden ratio help artists do?
A.Take beautiful photos. B.Create balanced paintings.
C.Choose right colors. D.Measure the human body.
2.What is the main purpose of Paragraph 3?
A.To show the history of geometry. B.To introduce Leonardo da Vinci’s works.
C.To explain how geometry helps in art. D.To compare different art styles.
3.Which of the following can be put in * .
A. B. C. D.
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.B 4.A 5.D
